PDF generation highly CPU expensive

Hi,
We are experiencing heavy CPU activity (100%) when Form Server is generating pdfs.
The Adobe LiveCycle version is 8.2 and its running on a WebLogic 9.2. The pdf genereration involves a render service and an assembler service, the latter used for flattening. The forms are pre-populated, with sometimes, quite large xml files. The server itself is very powerful (it more than meets standard requirements for Adobe LC) and uses automatic thread optimization so were quite surprised to see the CPU reach 100% when Adobe generates forms.
Is it normal that this much CPU power is needed when Form Server is rendering forms (pre-populating)?
Are there any server tweaks which can address this issue?
Kind regards
Lars

Based on the description of your orchestration, this is "normal".
Can you use CPU-Z and report the type of CPUs the server has?

  • Since 10.4.6 Update: "ATSServer" with high CPU-usage when opening PDFs

Since I've updated to 10.4.6 my system is very slow when I open PDFs (in "Preview" or "Acrobat").
This is caused by the process "ATSServer" which goes through every file in "~/Library/Fonts" (I have over 4.800 files there - but just a view are activated by "FontBook") and so it takes very high CPU-usage.
I didn't have this problem bevore the update and I didn't make any changes on my font settings.
I've cleaned the font cache, but it doesn't help.
    Any ideas?

I haven't noticed any change myself, Dan, but I have the 2 GHz model.
One thing I HAVE noticed though after OS updates is that they can often result in a fair amount of file and free space fragmentation immediately after installation. OSX's routines will deal with fragmentation of small files , but not of large ones (over 20 Meg), and it won't deal very effectively with free space fragmentation. If your HD is getting full this can cause significant slowdowns, especially where video is involved.
You should also run DiskUtility and check for any directory and permissions issues.

Well that's 20 identical instances and I got 99% CPU usage lasting about 10 seconds. For a bigger pdf, it shurely last much more time so that I generally have to kill dolphin but ghostscript instance are not killed and I have to kill them next!
Here are the version of kdebase (containing dolphin) and ghostscript:
    pacman -Q|grep kdeb
    kdebase 4.1.3-1
    kdebase-runtime 4.1.3-1
    kdebase-workspace 4.1.3-1
    [09:50][manu@compal:~/PDF ]$ pacman -Q|grep ghost
    ghostscript 8.63-3
I think (not 100% shure) it was not not happening some times ago with an older dolphin version.
Am I the only one expriencing this problem?
By the way My CPU is a pentium dothan 1.5 GHz

  • High CPU usage after 10g to 11g Migration

    Hello,
    I have migrated some database instances via import/export from 10g 10.0.3.0 to 11g 11.2.0.2
I found that below SQL Statements mainly cause the high CPU load
    select * from (select null table_qualifier, o1.owner table_owner, o1.object_name table_name, decode(o1.owner, :"SYS_B_00", decode(o1.object_type, :"SYS_B_01", :"SYS_B_02", :"SYS_B_03", :"SYS_B_04", o1.object_type), :"SYS_B_05", decode(o1.object_type, :"SYS_B_06", :"SYS_B_07", :"SYS_B_08", :"SYS_B_09 ", o1.object_type), o1.object_type) table_type, null remarks from all_objects o1 where o1.object_type in (:"SYS_B_10", :"SYS_B_11") union select null table_qualifier, s.owner table_owner, s.synonym_name table_name, :"SYS_B_12" table_type, null remarks from all_objects o3, all_synonyms s where o3.object_type in (:"SYS_B_13", :"SYS_B_14") and s.table_owner= o3.owner and s.table_name = o3.object_name union select null table_qualifier, s1.owner table_owner, s1.synonym_name table_name, :"SYS_B_15" table_type, null remarks from all_synonyms s1 where s1.db_link is not null ) tables WHERE :"SYS_B_16"=:"SYS_B_17" AND TABLE_NAME=:"SYS_B_18" ORDER BY :"SYS_B_19", :"SYS_B_20", :"SYS_B_21"
    (SELECT :"SYS_B_00", T.owner, T.table_name, TO_NUMBER(NULL), :"SYS_B_01", :"SYS_B_02", :"SYS_B_03", TO_NUMBER(NULL), :"SYS_B_04", :"SYS_B_05", num_rows, blocks, NULL FROM ALL_TABLES T WHERE table_name=:"SYS_B_06" UNION SELECT :"SYS_B_07", a.table_owner, a.table_name, decode(a.uniqueness, :"SYS_B_08", :"SYS_B_09", :"SYS_B_10"), a.owner, a.index_name, :"SYS_B_11&q uot;, b.column_position, b.column_name, :"SYS_B_12", a.distinct_keys, a.leaf_blocks, NULL FROM ALL_INDEXES a, ALL_IND_COLUMNS b WHERE a.owner = b.index_owner AND a.index_name = b.index_name AND a.table_owner=:"SYS_B_13" AND a.table_name=:"SYS_B_14" UNION SELECT :"SYS_B_15", c.owner, c.synonym_name, decode(a.uniqueness, :"SYS_B_16", :"SYS_B_17", :"SYS_B_18"), a.owner, a.index_name, :"SYS_B_19", b.colu mn_position, b.column_name, :"SYS_B_20", a.distinct_keys, a.leaf_blocks, NULL FROM ALL_INDEXES a, ALL_IND_COLUMNS b, ALL_SYNONYMS c WHERE c.synonym_name=:"SYS_B_21" AND c.owner=:"SYS_B_22" AND c.table_name = a.table_name AND c.table_name = b.table_name AND c.table_owner= a.table_owner AND c.table_owner= b.table_owner AND a.owner = b.index_owner AND a.index_name = b.index_name ) ORDER BY :"SYS_B_23", :"SYS_B_24", :"SYS_B_25", : "SYS_B_26"
Does anyone know why it is so??
I have gathered System Statistics and data dictionary statistics also, but had same performance issue.
    Thanks,
    Raj

    We have a similar issue:
    SELECT '', T.owner, T.table_name, TO_NUMBER(NULL), '', '', 0, TO_NUMBER(NULL), '', '', num_rows, blocks, NULL FROM ALL_TABLES...
It appears this kind of statement is being generated from MS Access 2007 as part of a translation to Oracle SQL. I suspect Access 2007 doesn't know about the 11gR2 system catalog changes.
The Oracle SQL Advisor indicates the following on the SQL statement comming from Acess 2007:
Restructure SQL An expensive cartesian product operation was found at line ID 5 of the execution plan. Consider removing the disconnected table or view from this statement or add a join condition which refers to it. A cartesian product should be avoided whenever possible because it is an expensive operation and might produce a large amount of data.
Restructure SQL An expensive "UNION" operation was found at line ID 1 of the execution plan. Consider using "UNION ALL" instead of "UNION", if duplicates are allowed or uniqueness is guaranteed. "UNION" is an expensive and blocking operation because it requires elimination of duplicate rows. "UNION ALL" is a cheaper alternative, assuming that duplicates are allowed or uniqueness is guaranteed.
I think application needs to upgrade to Access 2010 or Access 2007 needs a service pack.
There is also supposed to be a way to remove the system & sys catalog calls from Access 2007 on the PC this is coming from.

  • High CPU Usage in Word 2013

    Hi everyone,
I'm having an issue with Word 2013 and I'm hoping someone can help. Seen as I got fleeced for my TechNet subscription this year (the price given on the invoice doubled when I called up to pay!) I’d very much like to see a speedy fix from the Microsofties
    please! :D
Recently, I've found that Word will consistently exhibit high CPU utilisation, ~50% on a dual core second generation Core i5.
This continues, even when I’m not providing any input to or interacting with the Word window and even when the Word window is covered by other windows. Minimising Word causes its CPU usage to drop back down to zero.
The strange thing is that, so far, I’ve only observed this with a single document. I started writing this document at the start of this week and it’s been authored exclusively on Word 2013. In fact I’m the only one who’s editing it and I’ve only used a single
computer (and this one single install of Word 2013) to do so…
There’s nothing particularly unusual about this document, and a different but similar document which uses the same themes and features (in fact the theme for the second document was created from the first one) doesn’t appear to cause the same issues. Both
these documents are stored on SkyDrive, and are being edited directly from there.
Initially I tried the much recommended tweaks of disabling hardware graphics acceleration and sub-pixel positioning, however neither of these has had any effect.
I investigated a bit further using Sysinternals Process Monitor, and found that while Word is using a lot of CPU it’s actually looping very, very quickly polling for the existence of the registry key “HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics”.
This key doesn’t exist on my system, and a quick test I conducted where I created it just lead to Word looping polling for more non-existent registry keys.
My system is a HP Folio 13 running Windows 8 Pro x64 with Office 2013 (RTM, not Beta) 32 bit. Both Windows and Office are fully patched, as is everything else on the system.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
    Chris

    Hello again,
After working on my problematic document some more, I believe I’ve found the cause of the issue.
@Microsofties – I think this one is either a bug or a dodgy OOTB template…
I noticed that the high CPU usage only seemed to occur when the document’s footer was displayed. Experimenting with some careful scrolling and zooming to hide footer (without actually using the “hide white-space” option) seemed to confirm this so I investigated
    the footer a bit more.
My document was using the standard Word “Facet (Odd Page)” footer template with a couple of fields added to suit my needs, namely “Publish Date” and a page number.
The template seems to be structured such that the content of the footer is inside two nested text boxes (one inside the other). I also noticed previously that this footer template also appears to “jump” up each page and back down again as I scrolled.
So I deleted the footer and its text boxes, and recreated the same content, in the same position (using the standard paragraph alignment tools) by hand without the nested text boxes. This has, so far, fixed the issue!
I also noticed that the CPU usage dropped right down to idle the moment I deleted the nested text boxes.
Altogether, this leads me to conclude that the “Facet (Odd Page)” footer template in Word 2013 is the source of my issue. Specifically, I believe that the use of nested text boxes in this template causes Word’s interactions with the .Net 4.5 WPF to go a
bit nuts, as evidenced by the infinite loop of request for the non-existent “Avalon.Graphics” WPF registry key I mentioned previously.
It would be nice to see some feedback on this one, Microsoft people, if only to know if this is actually a general issue or is specific to my document!
    Thanks, Chris

  • High CPU usage with Coherence 3.5.0 cluster node

We're noticing sustained high CPU usage on one of our Coherence nodes - this happens after running a job that pretty intensively interacts with the cache. The jobs complete, however we still see the Coherence process using approximately the equivalent of one core's worth of CPU. I took a couple of thread dumps about fifteen minutes apart, and the only noticeable differences are within the PacketListener1 and PacketListenerN threads - they're holding locks on different DatagramPacket instances, which suggests to be that this may be the piece of code that is looping.
There are two other cache nodes in this particular cluster - both of them on a different machine - and neither of them are exhibiting the same CPU utilization.

    Charlie, Cameron,
Thanks for following up. To answer Cameron's question - yes, running top shows that it is this process using a significant amount of the CPU. I captured a JRA this morning setting nativesamples=true.
I see the following when I look at the Hot Methods - let me know if there is something else that would shed some more light on this issue.

  • AcroRd32.exe Goes to High CPU After Reader is Closed

When I close Acrobat reader, the process AcroRd32.exe jumps up to high CPU usage, about 25% and stays there.  If there are several adobe reader windows open, this occurs upon closing the last reader window.  If I open reader again, then close, I get another stale AcroRd32.exe process and another +25% CPU usage, etc.  I have to kill the processes in Win7 task manager.
I've tried downgrading from version 11 to version 10, with no success.  I've tried suggestions from this forum and other sites, such as
edit->preferences->general, uncheck "show me messages...", check "don't show me messages..."
edit->preferences->internet, uncheck "allow fast web viewing", uncheck "allow speculative downloading..."
    But no luck.  Still happening.
It hasn't always been this way.  I suspect some interaction with a windows or browser update within the past month or so.
This is really broken and really annoying.  Thank you!

I have a customer with the same issue.  I've done all the standard fixes, like disable protected mode, stop messages, etc.  This is on a Citrix XenApp 6.5 server and the particular workstation is shared by many people using a common log on.  The users are all using Reader XI to view AutoCAD 2004 and SolidWorks 2014 drawings that have been printed to PDF.
Anybody have any ideas because I'm out.

  • Query to find adhoc queries taking high cpu on server

    Hi,
I want to find all the adhoc and other queries consuming high cpu on sql server. sys.dm_exec_cahched_plan will only have cached queries and not the currently running ones.

    Hi Preetha7,
According to your description, if you want to identify the most expensive SQL Server queries based on the cumulative CPU cost, you can use the DMVs of the sys.dm_exec_sql_text , the sys.dm_exec_query_plan and sys.dm_exec_query_stats. For example, you can
refer to the following T-SQL statement.
    SELECT TOP 20
    qs.sql_handle,
    qs.execution_count,
    qs.total_worker_time AS Total_CPU,
    total_CPU_inSeconds = --Converted from microseconds
    qs.total_worker_time/1000000,
    average_CPU_inSeconds = --Converted from microseconds
    (qs.total_worker_time/1000000) / qs.execution_count,
    qs.total_elapsed_time,
    total_elapsed_time_inSeconds = --Converted from microseconds
    qs.total_elapsed_time/1000000,
    st.text,
    qp.query_plan
    FROM
    sys.dm_exec_query_stats AS qs
    CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(qs.sql_handle) AS st
CROSS apply sys.dm_exec_query_plan (qs.plan_handle) AS qp
    ORDER BY qs.total_worker_time DESC
Or you can run the "Performance - Top Queries By Total CPU Time" report in SSMS. In addition, you can use SQL Server Extended Events session for troubleshooting the high consumed of CPU time. For more information about finding currently session that is costing
    high CPU.

  • Adobe 10.1.7 will not close in task manager after you exit the program. High cpu

    Hello,
Updated to 10.1.7 and noticed that when you close the program an instance of acrobat stays open in task manager with high 50%+ cpu usage. Will not close at all unless you end task. if you open adobe again a new instance opens again consuming more cpu and cripples the machine with high cpu. This is on win 8 64bit machine. Had the previous release 10.1.6 working for some time on the same machine with no issues.
    Thank you in advance

Identical issue with Acrobat XI Pro on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. After viewing PDF file, upon closing Acrobat, a new Background Process starts called Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) uses 18% of cpu.  I have left run for three to four hours and does not close.  If I open another PDF file and then close, a second Background Process of Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) start, also using 18% of cpu.  I was able to open a third PDF file and upon closing a third Background Process of Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) start, also using 18% of cpu.  I did not try more.  All three consume over 50% of processor and after an hour does not close.  Fan and cpu begin to run hot so I manual End Task.  I tried Repair Acrobat Installation command, did not fix.  After searching forum used the Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool (http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html) to uninstall.  Then downloaded Acrobat XI Pro from My Adobe account login.  Reinstalled software.  Issue gone, could not replicate even after several hours of trying.  Then Checked for Updates. After updates installed, loaded and brought to version 11.0.3, problem returned as before. I have PDF files on both local drive and NAS, been able to recreate issue on both.  In a PDF intensive environment, I was having to leave the task manager up and occasionally stop Background Process of Adobe Acrobat (32 bit) so as to keep processor usage and fan speed down, thanks to Goateye01 for the suggestion, I now leave Acrobat open and close the files, this way the background process hang does not occur.  Additional Note, only able to create issue with standalone application, issue does not occur when in IE10 and viewing PDF files.   Hopefully a fix or helpful guidance coming soon?

  • MacBook shuts down on battery power at high cpu usage

I have a black MacBook core 2 duo (MacBook 2,1) that has always worked perfectly, but about 2 weeks ago it started to shut down without any notification.
When I am doing CPU intensive tasks I can hear a click and immediately after the computer turns off. This happens with different applications and even running Windows trough Boot Camp.
My first thought was that the computer shuts down itself to prevent overheating but since I only get the problem when running on battery power I rejected that theory.
In the other side my battery is working well, because it has only 183 charge cycles and the full capacity is 4169 mAh, meaning 82% of the capacity of a new one. With airport and bluetooth turned off and low brightness on the screen I can still read PDFs for more than 5 hours.
Another suspicious behavior is that last week, several minutes before the computer shut down, it couldn’t make any sound. I rebooted it and sound started working again. Maybe this is an independent problem but since they started together it can be related to the high CPU shut down one.
Has anybody seen this kind of behavior? Any idea about what is producing the problem?
    Thanks in advance

    yes it is the 5.1

  • Cause of high CPU consumption

I created the following test setting:
    CREATE TABLE test_p (
            id           NUMBER
          , rand         NUMBER
          , id_pad         VARCHAR2(100)

         , rpad(rownum, 100)
         , rpad('x', 50)
    FROM dual

    CREATE INDEX idx_p_p1 ON test_p (id);
ALTER TABLE test_p ADD CONSTRAINT pk_p PRIMARY KEY (id) USING INDEX idx_p_p1;Now I executed the following statement on several servers (10.2.0.4; most of the servers Solaris 10)
    SELECT count(p.rand)
FROM test_p p;One server showed an execution time of 16sec with 13sec "CPU used by this session" and 10sec "db file scattered read". Several retests showed about the same pattern: high CPU usage though there was a low load on the system (24 CPUs and run queue of around 10). I ran the same test on other systems (with less CPUs if this does matter) - the percentage of CPU time / execution time was muuuuch lower on all other systems.
What can be the cause of the high percentage of CPU time?
    - because the CPUs are slower on the system with 24CPUs???
    - because there might be swaping / Paging???
    - because context switches might be more expensive on systems with more CPUs???

  • Creative Cloud Applet crazy high CPU

The CC menu app takes a really high CPU persentage when idle. Sometimes up to 40% or more. The scenario seems to be the same, as far as I can tell—
Activity monitor shows really high CPU % from CC applet
I select the CC menu app, and the home screen only shows the spinner, nothing loading.
I need to select preferences / view your updates
This screen displays no updates, and I select 'go back'
The home screen now says my feed is empty, and shows the buttons to install adobe apps and link to behance.
At this point, CPU% dives down to .3% or so.
THis seems to work every time, but is a pain.
I did try the fix mentioend on this forum...to delete a preference and resinatall CC. This has not worked.
    2010 MacBook Pro 15, 2.66, Intel Core i7
    OS X 10.8.4
Here is a screen from Activity Monitor:
    http://cloud.acquazzone.net/image/3v1f3r1c1p0W

It doesn't drop to 3-5% when idle. The lowest I've ever seen it go is 7%, which is a lot of power for an app that probably isn't/shouldn't doing anything at all. Obviously this is a huge drain on battery life and makes my fans go higher than they should all the time.
Right now, I'm getting 18% on CEF helper (what is it anyway?) and 12% on Creative Cloud itself (which isn't open or doing anything at all).
Acrobat, PS, AI, ID, Coda, all with lots of documents open, use 0-2% each. Dropbox, which is syncing right now, uses about 10% and normally uses none at all.
Actually, I just figured it out somewhat – whatever the home screen on CC is supposed to do isn't working, and it was burning up 30% cpu to render the spinner icon in the background even with the window closed. Moving to the apps screen drops creative cloud to 0.2% and CEF to 8%, which is still higher than 3-5% (which in itself would be unnaceptable).
To know that people who pirate the adobe software have a much better user experience than all of us who pay a lot to use it makes me feel stupid, I have to say.
FWIW the CS6 version of creative cloud was working really well and I recommended it to other people. I don't see why the new version had to be rushed out without proper testing other than to make money at the expense of delivering a crappy end product to your customers. Congrats on becoming the TWC of software.

  • High CPU usage on X

I use KDE 4.5 and a NVidia card (8400M G) with the official driver.
Sometimes I get high CPU usage on X (around 50% usage) when using the computer, particularly when viewing PDF with Okular making the scroll a bit sluggish. Is this normal behaviour?
My system is up to date.

Try viewing that pdf outside KDE, try the nouveau drivers - this way you can (hopefully) nail down what the problem is. Cairo, poppler, pango - are you using the stock packages or some AUR/modified ones?

  • Permanent high CPU load and timeouts in communication channels

    Dear Colleagues,
we've a strange issue since last week. At first we had an problem with a redirect to the cytrix online booking engine within the travel management application of our SAP NW Portal. There is a redirect.jsp file deployed in our PI system that connects to cytrix and passes the URL with session link and session cookie to our Portal. We fixed that issue by restarting the PI system.
    We have a PI 7.0 stack 23 on HP-UX.
After restarting we found that we've got a very high CPU load (about 75% overall CPU, or 300% at 4 CPUs) probably caused by very frequent (3 per second) minor garbage collection runs (as seen in GC.log).
On friday we had timeouts within one of our communication channels in the PI system.
We changed the heap size from 2GB to 3GB and the new generation from 341MB to 768MB and restarted the PI system. But after a few ours the system uses 75% RAM of the CPU high CPU load and the GC runs are still the same.
This is a short excerpt of our GC.log:

Does anyone know what can cause the high load?
Is the frequency of the GC runs normal?
Can the timeouts be connected to the high CPU load?
The error ony occurs on our productive system.
I'd appriciate your help very much.
    Kind regards,
    Paul

    hi Paul,
I believe an issue like that needs to be done onsite and not via a forum
as it probably requires doing lots of checks/tests
my suggestion would be to get a PI consultant expert with basis experience onsite or do it via OSS with SAP

  • High cpu usage when handling multiple rtmfp direct connections?

I'm writing a realtime multiplayer game with adobe AIR and RTMFP. The game uses a server client architecture in which all players are directly connected to a single computer ( host has one output netstream and one input netstream for each player). The problem is that the cpu usage will increase dramatically with the number of connections. 20 players is enough to bring my cpu down to it's knees.
I've made an experiment replacing RTMFP with TCP sockets ( Using AIR ServerSocket for the host ), with this the game handled 20 connections while using only 2% cpu. Unfortunately TCP sockets create a lot of extra lag because of nagle's algorithm so I can't use them as a replacement of RTMFP, but this experiment almost definitely proves that the bottleneck is in the usage of RTMFP NetStreams.
Is such high cpu requirements expeceted? If so, what makes it so cpu intensive? Is there anything I can do to lower the cpu usage?
Some extra data about my game:
    I'm not using NetGroups.
The host will send about 15 small messages per second to all clients, all messages target the same method called "msg" and use ByteArray as argument. ( myNetStream.send( "msg", msgByteArrayData ); )
A single game with 20 players is too much for my pc, but 3 game instances with 10 players would still run fine ( although still somewhat high cpu usage )
Thanks in advance for any help you could provide.

I just did a couple of net stream connection tests. It appears that the CPU load increase quadratically with the number of connections.
I also attached the summary for all the results in .png format as attaching the pdf format is not supported.
