Peformance - IO and virtual file stats
I was looking at this article :

under the 'Virtual File Statistics', the author makes several points which I found difficult to understand. appreciate any clarification :

I/O subsystem.
how do we define what is 'acceptable for the specific workload'?
is there any prior/historical statistics that we can avail of for the above?
also does "the workload has outgrown the disk I/O subsystem" mean the disk space available or disk controllers/spindles etc?
also would not a comparison of data/log files in terms of read, writes, stall etc - point to bad performing individual disks? ie if disk 1 stalled for 10 seconds for 1000 reads and 1000 writes and disk 2 stalled for 30 seconds for the same work load,
then would disk 2 be considered poor performing?
appreciate the insights.
If the disks are spread over the SAN (many instances) it is pretty difficult to diagnose the problem.

I am trying to get my files from my old iPhone 5s onto my new iPhone 6 Plus. I am currently and have been using iCloud to backup my files/state. However, I believe the antenna on the iPhone 5s went kaput a few months ago, because the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, both, do not work at all, meaning, I have tried all solutions including, resetting network settings, restarting the phone, etc. This is problematic because, as far as I know the iPhone 5s needs to be connected to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to a Wi-Fi Hotspot in order to ask the internet, in order to upload current information/state to iCloud. Herein lies my problem.
I have used iCloud already, to download my current files/state to my iPhone 6, with a caveat, these are only the files/state from before the antenna supposedly went kaput. That means, that all of my files/state since that time, while still being on my iPhone 5s, is not uploaded to iCloud, which then means I do not have it on my iPhone 6 which was updated to the most current files/state that was available at the time.
What do I do?
I have iTunes installed on a Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Computer, and I have made a backup on there. However, I have to admit, I find iTunes very counter-intuitive and very difficult to use/understand. And I'm mostly referring to the syncing/backing-up features. I know you have to have safe guards to protect software usage, but with this high-minded philosophy of minimalism, couldn't it be as easy as drag and drop? Even software syncing? USB syncing with iCloud, etc?Thank you for the information. I checked out the section and read it through. From what I can gather, you can start your new iPhone from an itunes backup (Set Up Iphone > Restore from iTunes Backup), but, in my situation I need to add the Files/State from the old iPhone backup to the new iPhone that was started from scratch and has it's own unique Files/State, without subtracting from either. The problem is, that I don't want to subtract anything, and from what I understand about Syncing, if I am Syncing a new iPhone that's been started up, edited, has it's own suite of apps, etc. to an old backup of a previous iPhone, I am going to lose everything new I've done, as it will sync with the previous Files/State.

iTunes auto-update dowloaded and installed on 28/01/2014. iTunes now won't launch and error message states file MSVCR80.dll is missing. Tried unistalling and downloading/installing again to no avail. Any clues?
Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

VFM (Virtual File Manager): End of life and replacement products
In our organization, we are heavy users of VFM (Virtual File Manager) for DFS management and file replication. Unfortunately VFM is going end of life in Nov 2012 and we have not been able to find suitable product(s) to replace its functionality.We have looked at many alternate products, including Autovirt and ScriptLogic SecureCopy for DFS management and file migration/replication and have not found a suitable replacement so-far. The products we have seen so-far do not scale well for larger environments and do not provide the ability to import or batch create tasks. For the DFS management functionality, it looks like Netapp may be able to create a custom tool for us, but we have not found anything suitable from the replication/migration side of things. We are looking for suggestions for replacement products for the functionality of VFM. Has anyone identified a successor for VFM that would still work within larger environments? Any suggestions would be appreciated.You can get the same functionality that was provided by this product if you take a slightly different approach by using symlinks or CIFS widelinks. I've been using a script I wrote which effectively replaced what we were doing in Netapp VFM. I create symlinks in the main share that I consider to be the primary tier of storage. The symlinks are to the folders residing on secondary SATA tiers of storage. This script parses through the secondary tier, then adds said symlink into the main tier. To enable this you basically change the options in your share to allow external shares to be traversed (though, it's on the same storage system itself). Create a hidden clone share for the primary tier and change the option on that share to not follow external links/only allow internal. That share will then show the secondary tier folders as 0 byte files that are the shortcuts, you can literally manage those by deleting those files, or using the remove-nafile command in the PowerShell toolkit. This is 7-mode still, but you could do this approach all the same w/ cifs widelinks. This script itself only parses and creates the symlinks that point to secondary tiers of storage, it isn't doing any data migration. You could very easily integrate it into a data migration workflow where you scanned your main tier for folders that have files that haven't been modified in say a year, then auto move those to the SATA tier, then run this script. You could go one step further and auto move them back to primary if you detect your SATA share were in use again, just delete the symlink shortcut and migrate back to primary by doing a standard copy from the one share to other. In addition, this in my opinion is better than using a DFS shortcut for reach folder on each tier of storage whereever it was (like NetApp/Brocade VFM did). Essentially the client was handling linking the shortcuts. This moves the responsibility to the server building and presenting the share and the client knows no different. On a Mac system, this makes a HUGE difference as it is only seeing one DFS pointer in this approach. I can confirm that VFS does not work on NCP volumes. In fact an admin volume
is not created without NSS.
I'm using the X-plat APIs to manage trustees on NCP volumes.

IBM QMF 9.1 - How to handle hard coded .ini and .xml files

I've been trying to sequence ibm QMF for workstation. The app has 2 gotchas in that there seems to be 2 config files that it uses to execute an eclipse environment.
C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\DB2 Query Management Facility\QMF for Workstation\configuration\config.ini
has a path statement which cannot be resolved
[email protected]/Application Data/IBM/QMF for Workstation/settings
C:\Users\%USERID%\AppData\Roaming\IBM\QMF for Workstation\repositories.xml
has several path statements looking back at the program files directory (note I sequenced on an x86 machine, it doesn't work on x86 either)

I can make the app work by copying in the directories to the PC and then editing the config files and changing the paths to something inside the app-v package.
What methods do folks use to get around this???With hard-coded paths like that, you need to sequence on the same 'bitness' as the client.
If the app is trying to read or write to that location under program files, then it should be redirected to the virtualised paths.
VFS issues can happen if:
The exe queries Windows to ask where it is running from, gets the virtual location, and finds an unexptected mismatch to the location expected in the config file.
The application uses WMI (or some other external service) to query if the folder exists, which then cannot find the folder.
You sequenced to the PVAD, as a result the folder is hidden in the virtual file system, and the app cannot see the install folder.
If you sequenced to the PVAD, I would try again setting a dummy PVAD location - or just sequence it with SP3.
If that does not help, does just creating those empty directories in the real file system do the trick?
If none of the above help, then creating a symbolic link under program files pointing to the virtual location may work.

Plug-ins and Virtual Instruments
Can someone explain to me a little bit about plug-ins and virtual instruments. Namely ones that are compatible with logic express 8. I see the ads for them all the time but don't know much about them. What's good... What's bad... Can I use them in LE8. I was looking at SyntAX. How user friendly are they or should I stick with what I know... Namely Midi Instruments and Loops?
syntAX says it's compatible with Logic... Does that mean it's also compatible with LE8? I'd like to get some feedback before I shell out $199 for the plug-in.

It states it's compatible with logic but doesn't actually state .AU ready. Will I need a wrapper of some sort to use this plug-in? The only plug-ins I really use in LE8 at this point are ESX24 and the FX. I have tons of apple loops but never really looked into using VIs in Logic. I tried using a few that come with LE8 (namely AMGs One) but it doesn't work properly as it can't find certain files.
Any one with advice on some good Logic compatible plugins? -

IF and ABS condition statement in BEX query designer

I would like to ask the best way for me to produce an acceptable result from Excel IF and ABS Condition statement.
The condition statement that I have on my Excel file is

I'm trying multiple times to reproduce this in BEX Query designer, unfortunately I'm getting a bad result or unacceptable formula.

BalajiIndexes can be visible or invisible. An invisible index is maintained by DML operations and cannot be used by the optimizer. Actually takes space, but is not to be used as part of a potential access path.
AFAIK, a virtual index is created by the tools used in SQL statement access path tuning to provide an alternative for the optimizer to test. It does not take any real space as it is a pure in memory definition. -
How to combine both DAQ AI signal, write and read file in single VI

I have to measure 33 signals ( mostly analog like temp, pressure, etc...) from NI USB 6210 DAQ system and write in master file for future verfication.From real data or from master file back up have to write one more file if only the signal reaches steady state , which will used for analysis and same signals to be read from this file parallely & make a waveform and/or table display format.

note: I have plan to ugrade labVIEW version 2011 shortly, so let me know doing parrel acquistion write and read file for data analysis in same VI in version 7.1......Parallel operations in LabVIEW are very simple. Just code it in parallel and it will work.
Try taking a look at some of the examples in the NI Example Finder (Help > Find Examples). There you will find example for writing to and reading from files, as well as data acquistion in parallel with other operations.
You might need a producer/consumer architecture is you are acquiring data very quickly.

You can certainly use iWork, though I hesitate to recommend it to a seasoned Windows user simply because it would add another level of the unfamiliar with which you would have to gain familiarity. The iWork applications are certainly very competent and in most respects both easy to use and surprisingly powerful. They are not 100% compatible however, though that typically manifests itself in document formatting issues rather than anything more significant.
I have never attempted to import emails from a Windows system into MacOS - other than in Outlook connected to an Exchange server, thus not really an issue at all. I doubt that the Mail app in MacOS can import directly, but of course you could always set the account(s) up on the Mac and then forward emails you want to keep from the PC. Not elegant, but it works. Virtually any Windows document or file, whichever application created it, can be opened or converted for use on a Mac, and using both systems on my desk each day I rarely see any issues switching stuff from one machine to the other. You may stumble over one or two issues, but likely not significant.
In switching platforms there will be some inevitable issues, not so much with being able to import your stuff because there's usually a workaround or a utility that can help, but just with getting familiar with the platform and the differences between Windows and MacOS that can obscure their similarities. From time to time the support community here hears from a user who has found the migration very problematic and regrets it, but for the most part the phrase 'I should have done this years ago...' is rather more prevalent! -
Remote desktop virtualization setup - can't identify virtual desktop state
I'm experimenting with MS's vdi offering and have hit a problem when selecting the Remote Desktop template virtual machine.
The Error (translated from spanish)
'Cannot identify the virtual desktop state. Verify that the remote desktop virtualization host server hypervsrv is available on the network and that the virtual desktop VDIBaseWin7 is closed'
What I've got:
A Windows 2012 R2 with hyper-v
A Windows 2012 Std on which I am trying to configure Remote desktop virtualization
A virtual machine with Windows 7 pro. The machine is basic win 7, patched and has been sysprepped.
How I get there:
From server manager I open Remote Desktop Services > from the wizard área above I click on (3) Create remote desktop collection
This opens the wizard where I choose a name for the collection
I then select 'personal virtual desktop collection' and 'créate and adminístrate virtual desktops automatically'
The wizard then presents me with a list of virtual machines. I then select the sysprepped wind 7 pro machine (which is shut down naturally). I've tried generating the win7 machine as a generation 1 and generation 2 - the result is the same.
The wizard pauses for a few moments and then displays:
'Cannot identify the virtual desktop state. Verify that the remote desktop virtualization host server hypervsrv is available on the network and that the virtual desktop VDIBaseWin7 is closed'
Neither the event log of the hyper-v server, nor the rds server, report anything.
So, my question is, whats failing? Its obvious that its trying to perform some action and is failing. The question is, whats it trying to do. If I knew what it was doing then I could investigate the cause, but the error doesn't say much.
Anyone have any ideas?strange, This question has been moved to the remote desktop forum. I would have thought this forum was more for the traditional terminal server type questions.
Anyway, I found a solution to my own problem. It turns out to be the mix of 2012R2 for hyperv and 2012 std for the broker, etc.
I set up another server with 2012r2 and followed the same sequence to configure it with the rds roles and it worked perfectly. -
i am running vista home premium on desktop and vista basic on laptop. have placed my itunes music with .itl and .xml files onto external drive connected to another desktop running vista and can no longer access music on first two mentioned comps only on the one connected to external drive. always am told that the library cant be read because it was created using a newer version of itunes. have tried to download 10.3 but it always tells me that i have and invalid hard drive j and to try again. any ideas?
Older versions of iTunes cannot read libraries created with newer versions of iTunes. You need to have the same version of iTunes on all your PCs. Is that the case?

If you get to the point where you need the Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, you will need more help as it has been withdrawn by Microsoft. but I am hoping the virtual drive trick will work,
