Performance evaluation for file storage.

If I were working in C/C++ I would know what should be an appropriate record size so it could be stored in one cache line, and processed therein; precisely how many pointer transitions will be required to fetch a record, and how microprocessor registers will be used.
This gives an idea about the level of optimization I want to achieve. Can you please point me towards literature that gives a detailed description of how Java Card handles its variable and object references at the lowest level? This becomes a more pertinent issue in case of Java Cards.
While I understand that individual card vendors have specific JVM and JCRE implementations, what is the lowest level I can go to while I'm working with Java card development kit? As of now I plan to use the SimpleFile and Record classes availalbe with kit samples.
Thank you for your help.

    My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
    The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
    Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
    The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
    Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
    Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
    eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
    Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
    Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
    Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
    There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
    Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
    The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.

  • Looking for file storage site from where I could stream my vidos

    Hello guys,
    I have a .mov file from time to time, which I would like to store/post on the internet and send people it's URL so people can click on that link and watch that video.
    I have tried few sites, including mobileMe. They do provide storage for files but the only way people can watch them is that they have to download them first. When I send people link to that file, it does not stream, but it downloads to their computer first. So I am wondering, is there any site where I could store my video files for streaming?
    Thanks for any tips or advise.

    Hi Kirk,
    thanks a lot for your support. This is what I did:
    I have wrote a simple html using Taco. Here is the code:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 TRANSITIONAL//EN">
    <html>
    <head>
    <title></title>
    </head>
    <body bgcolor ="000000">
    <table width="1920" height="720" align="center">
    <tr>
    <td><embed src="BGI.mov" height="720" width="1280" align="middle"></td>
    </tr>
    </table>
    </body>
    </html>
    I have uploaded this html file onto iDisk Public Folder, just beside BGI.mov video file.
    Then I clicked Sharing options. iDisk generated this link:
    files.me.com/iceberger/qwg8qk
    When I copy this link and paste it into my browser window, my browser still downloads this html to my desktop. But when I open it, there is a question mark and no video is playing.
    What I do wrong?
    Thank you so much again for your help and for your patience.

  • Best option for file storage

    I want to archive some of my CAD files and other files on a 'by year' basis. Is a flash drive a good option? They seem neat but then again they are a bit small & could get lost. Any ideas on the best option these days?

    A 2.5" external hard drive will hold MUCH more and still fit in a shirt pocket should you choose. Lots of storage for a reasonable price. Remember to make backups of whatever meda you choose. You don't want your files to be in just one place.

  • Can I use the time capsule internal hard drive for file storage?

    Can I configure the Time Capsule internal HD to function as a network file server as well as handling time machine backups?
    Can the internal HD be partitioned?

    This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
    The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.

  • MDM plus DMS for file storage

    Hello folks
    We are planning to implement MDM for rich product catalogue for a customer; the latter already has SAP DMS (Document Management System from SAP ERP) where the product image files are stored on a SAP Content Server.
    Can we leave the images stored on the DMS Content Server and just use the link in MDM ??? Has anyone achived this already ?
    I suppose the url must be generated by DMS as it is only from this component that SAP ERP knows the file is in the Content Server...
    Any hint/help on this is most welcome !
    Thanks
    /Sooriya

    Hello,
    I´m consultant from SAP Germany with experiences in MDM and in DMS systems too.
    SAP Content Server is a simple DMS system which is able to store documents and provide them later on demand. For using this CS it is required to have an SAP basis component SAP Archive link version http 4.5 or higher available. This interface is not delivered as an MDM component. But it can be integrated.
    I implemented into a PoC such a solution. The major challenge will be to store an image into that content server.
    The display of such documents should be able directly from a content server by using Data Managers WEB-pane or onto portal by accessing the content from the WEB-Service.
    I wrote a document with a description of such an example.
    I´m not sure whether it will be possible to add a document into this forum. But i will provide this document as seperatre mail on demand to everyone who´s interested in..

  • Can I use one 2tb external hard drive for time capsule and file storage?

    I would like to use time capsule, but also keep the hard drive on my desktop for file storage. Can I do this?

    Apple advises against doing that.
    Any data stored on the disk that Time Machine is backing up to can not be backed up.
    Plus the data outside of the Time Machine backup database cause problems when Time Machine starts cleaned up old backups to recover space for new backups.
    For these reason it is advised that the Time Capsule disk be used for one or the other but not both.

  • Best practices for performance on io and storage.

    I'm building / buying a new server was planning on going virtual.
    Dual xeon 2620 v3 with 64 GB ram we have about 15 users and 14 remote users.
    Main server 2008 / 2012 SQL
    2nd Server 2008 / 2012 File storage
    3rd Server / Terminal Services / Citrix (may not be needed still evaluating)
    Here is my concern.
    HyperV server installed on a mirror dive 120 GB SAS Raid 0 (i've been informed that this is unnecessary as hyper V doesn't require much space and that having it on an SSD would only improve on the boot up speed for the actual hyper V server, hypervisor,
    there fore even if I put this on a slow 5400 RPM drive this would only affect the initial boot up of hyperV (which I don't' plan on rebooting often)  is this true, would the page file be an issue?
    I was then planning on having 600 sas 15K (x4) raid 10, I would use this for the datastores of the 3 server on these drives.
    I've been informed that the I/O on these drives will affect performance and that each server should be on it's own  separate physical drives (raid volume).
    Is this common? Should I be using separate HD's for each virtual machine?

    Do not create "silos" or "islands" of storage as it both a) hell of a management and b) effective way to steal IOPS from your config. OBR10 (One Big RAID10) is a way to go. See:

  • Perform VENDOR EVALUATION for MORE THAN ONE VENDORS at a time

    Hello all,
    Please guide for any process where i can perform Vendor Evaluation for MORE THAN ONE vendors AT A TIME.
    At my location there are around thousand vendors, which are to be evaluated, and difficult to perform the evaluation process one-by-one.
    (ME61/ME62/ME63)
    Detailed replies with various possibilities would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Joy Ghosh

    The vendor evaluation for some thousand vendors at the same time has already been in SAP long before they developed LSMW. The purpose of LSMW is to load data from a legacy system, of course you can (mis-)use it for a lot other things.
    But you should not always use LSMW if you are to lazy to go thru the SAP standard menu to find a transaction like ME6G
    There you define a job that runs RM06LBAT report.
    You first have to define a selection variant for this report. this can be done in SE38 by entering the report name, select variant, clicking display, then entering a name for the variant and clicking Create.

    Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • Using an External HD with USB 1.1 for Media (Movie files) storage?

    Many thanks for your attention.
    For a Media Storage (mostly movies) HD, I ordered a Maxtor OneTouch II with Firewire and the company mistakenly sent me one with USB 1.1 instead.
    I remember reading that for Media Storage, only the Firwire connection will work (for Macs). Or that there are a lot of problems with USB.
    Before sending this HD back to company, just checking to see if this is so.
    Also (when I get the correct Drive), I've heard that in order to store a Movie File, (a movie on Final Cut Pro or iMovie, etc.), the External Hard Drive MUST be formatted as a "Mac Extended (Journaled)" Hard Drive.
    Posting here for people's thoughts, opinions (hopefully not contradictory).
    - Ross

    Send it back.
    Even USB 2.0 isn't good for media. Fast transfer rate, but not a sustained one.
    USB 1 won't work AT ALL.

  • CCM 2.0 - Files Storage for high volume of files

    Hi all,
    I have seen in one message the following information:
    <i>1. Files storage.
    My point is that I think you've created a virtual folder on the SRM Server in SICF, which means that all your files are stored internally in the database, and not physically on the server.
    The most simple way is to create a physical folder on the server OS, and then create analias in SICF to this folder. You then will be abble to load in mass the pictures on the server using FTP, or network Share.</i>
    I want to upload images in the Catalog (CCM 2.0) and in my case I have high volume of files. Where is the best place to stored this data, in the database or in the server?
    And if it is in the server, how I can create an alias?
    Many thanks!!
    Regards

    Hi ,
    What we had done for image upload for CCM 2.0 was like this:
    1. in SE80 go to MIME repository -> drill down to services -> bc /sap/bsp - >Create a personal folder
    2. Import your image .jpeg in this folder.
    3. Derive an URL with the structue : server name/domain name/services/file name
    4. test this URL in IE browser ,it should open the picture in IE for you.
    5. then paste this URL in the characteristic 'image' of an item in master catalog in CAT
    with this in EBP we could see the photos of the items.

  • X4500 RAID Configuration for best performance for video storage

    Hello all:
    Our company is working with a local university to deploy IP video security cameras. The university has an X4500 Thumper that they would like to use for the storage of the video archives. The video management software (VMS) will run on an Intel based server with Windows 2003 server as the OS and connect to the Thumper via iSCSI. The VMS manages the permissions, schedules and other features of the cameras and records all video on the local drives until the scheduled archive time. When the archive time occurs, the VMS transfers the video to the Thumper for long term storage. It is our understanding that when using iSCSI and Windows OS there is a 2TB limit for the storage space - so we will divide the pool into several 2TB segments.
    The question is: Given this configuration, what RAID level (0, 1, Z or Z2) will provide the highest level of data protection without comprimising performance to a level that would be noticable? We are not writing the video directly to the Thumper, we are transferring it from the drives of the Windows server to the Thumper, and we need that transfer to be very fast - since the VMS stops recording during the archiving and restarts when complete, creating down time for the cameras.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    I'd put as many disks as possible into a RAID 5 (striping) set. This will provide the highest level of performance, with the ability to sustain a single disk failure.
    With striping, some data is written to all the disks in the stripe set. So, if you have 10 disks in the set, then instead of writing data to a single disk, which is slow, 1/10th of the data is written to each disk simultaneously, which is very fast. In effect, the more disks you write to, the faster the operation completes.

  • Performance Gain for IRIX servers if Personal flag is removed from magnus.conf file.

    Performance Gain for IRIX servers if Personal flag is removed from magnus.conf file.
    <p>
    As shipped by SGI, some of the server products have a flag set in the
    magnus.conf file setting a small footprint for the servers, generally
    less than 1 megabyte of memory. This flag is the Personal flag, and
    looks something like:
    <P>
    MaxProcs 1
    MinThreads 1
    MaxThreads 8
    Personal on
    <P>
    For one's own personal use, this is fine. But if CGIs are called, or
    if the site sees more traffic, then the flag may need to be removed,
    to look like:
    <P>
    MaxProcs 1
    MinThreads 1
    MaxThreads 8
    <P>
    A significant performance gain, (and a corresponding increase in
    memory used), would be seen by increasing the MaxThreads, as well.
    <P>
    For more complete tuning recommendations on SGI/IRIX, please see SGI's
    Tuning IRIX 6.2 for a Web Server page

    best storage for filies deleted but used frequently wd drop box flash drive

    Thanks LowLuster!  With that info I have another questions if that's ok.  First, I'm sure it's formatted to fat32.  I have learned I can't transfer movies over 4gb.  I use an external hard drive for those.  The files are ones I've downloaded from YouTube in the mp4 format and are never over 1gb.  They're all mb in size.
    I didn't realize flash drives had limited writes.  Is there any way to confirm I've reached the limit?  Both times I reformatted it I was able to add back the videos I previously had on it.  I would say there were a hundred or so. Both times I left some "growing room" on the flash drive so I could add more files.  And, both times I was able to continuing adding until I had reached the max capacity.  The problem occured after I tried deleting files to free up space.  Does this make sense with "the amount you have used it" theory?  Does it start to become buggy at that point, or does it just make writes to the drive impossible?
    Thanks
