Performance - Fast on one machine slow as molassis on another

I downloaded Safari for Windows beta on my laptop and desktop, both XP pro. On the desktop perfornance is amazing and on the laptop (core Duo with 1GB Memory) performance is a dog. Any ideas?

have you checked you are on a clear wireless channel and your wireless cards drivers are up to date also are you set to wireless b/g/n also check your lap top is connecting to the hub SSID and not BTWiFi /FON

  • 10.6.8 introduces several problem with mail, on one machine doesn't start on another it can't be seen from Safari, is that normal?

    I don't what's going on with 10.6.8
    Mail is suffering several problems.
first of all, I made all the standard routines... permissions, etc.
    1) on one machine it starts, the dock icon is bouncing endless, and even forcing the index rebuilt, doesn't help.
    2) on another machine, mail is not recognized by Safari, it is not there it says (My fear is that is Safari the problem? Strange)...
Do you have any other issue with Mail?

I have reinstalled the combo update, last night... The Mail app works ok on one mac, but is isolated, so no other app can send to Mail.app any email content.
    Here you have the snapshots.
    and this is the info.
I don't know what to do more... Shall I fill a bug report?

  • 2 identical macbook pro with mountain lion osx 10.8.1...one is fast and one is slow

    Helllo.
I am a new user with mac, and i have purchased two macbook pro and both of them have the same application and programs! the one is fast like a rocket, and the other one is very slow! Even when i want to open finder, i have to wait 5-10 seconds to open! Every time that i want to open anything from a simple file up to a simple program or application i have to wait for the spining wheel to stop...each time takes up to 5-10 seconds!
The only difference between the two, is that the slow macbook pro has the mackeeper application installed!! I find it very strange and have in mind that the two macs, where bought 2 months ago!!! Should i be worried?

Call me crazy, or call me stupid....but how on earth is backing up data is going to speed up my mac????
ok, i can backup my files in order not to lose anything!!! How is saving my data going to make my mac work faster?
I apologise if i sound a bit like an idiot, but i dont think that backing up my files is going to help me....i dont care if data is lost because the mac is not going to be used in work areas....i just need it to change gear and speed the f...k up again
My acer laptop that was bought 2 years ago is a lot faster than the mac, and the first performance problems related with speed, started a few months ago!!!! This mac after 2 months too slow!!!! i must wait for 5-10 seconds in order to open anything from a simple file up to a simple application....is it better if i get it back from the place i got it, and ask them to see if anything is wrong? only 80GB of hard disk is used and i still have 670 GB free! Do not overuse it or nothing! I just cant understand it!!!! Sorry for being so paranoid!!!

  • Running HTML DB apps on one machine with the database on another

I first want to apologize for this question being asked AGAIN.
I have spent the better part of the day reading through a lot posts regarding this issue (and there are a lot). My boss sent me this requirement on a new project that Oracle Forms and Reports run on one server and connect back to the database on another server for security. HTML DB needs to do the same thing.
    The question:
I have found out that the DAD file needs to be modified to allow this type of set up to work and the HTTP server needs to be running on that server. He is asking what in the DAD file needs to be changed to allow this to work. Would someone provide me with an example of what would need to be changed?
Also, I'm confused on the implementation of this. Currently all the applications I've created are for "in-house" users. This project is the first (that I've done) that is going to be open to users outside the company. I'm confused on the link that will be supplied to the users. After I import my application into the production database, I run it to get the link and send that to our users. If the application is going to be run from a different server from the database, how is/will the link to run the application be built? I hope I'm describing this well.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Joe,
You wouldn't have the database server "open to the outside world". All you'd need to have open would be the port for HTTP traffic.
    There are two scenarios -
    1) Having them both (DB & Apache) on the same machine
You would still only have the HTTP port open. The "fear" is that if the Apache server is compromised then they have access to the database machine.
    2) Having them on separate machines.
In this case if the Apache server is compromised then, since by definition, you have a route from the Apache server to the DB server then they can still reach the DB machine from the Apache server machine.
The thing to do here is to ensure your Apache server is patched and secure, regardless of whether it's running on the same machine as the DB or not.
I'd be interested to see what others think.

  • Exporting video from one machine and then importing into another not working...

    Here is my situation:
I wanted to import some videoes into iMovie on my Mac (OSX Lion) that my wife shot on her iPhone 4S (ios 5.x). I first synched her photos and video with iTunes/iPhoto on her machine (OSX Snow Leopard), then exported them from iPhoto onto a thumb drive. Then I imported them into iPhoto on my machine.
The pics are fine. But the videos are not playing. iPhoto sees they are videos, but each one is like a still: there is no duration to the video when you hit the play arrow. They also will not play by clicking on them directly in a Finder window from the thumb drive. The are showing up (for example) as IMG_0133.mov, with the proper "Quicktime movie" in the "Kind" column, but each one is 1 to 1.5 MB or less, so something is up.
Anyone know what has happened? Perhaps they don't export correctly?

Yes, I do, and I will do that when I re-do the process tonight.
Do I need to (or is it advisable) to export the .mov files separately?
I admit I was in a hurry and never having done this before, I did not look closely at the options.

  • Can I create a system disk on one machine, and swap it into another?

I just reinstalled the Win 7 Pro operating system, using lenovo install disks, on my 3820/K1000m W530.  I may end up getting a 3840QM/K2000M W530, and wanted to know if I can just swap the disk I just made into the new machine, this avoiding the issue of re-creating the disk.  I have Windows Office 2013 on the thing. I was hoping to
    1) Deactivate Windows 2013 (and adobe creative suite) on the source machine from the source disk.
    2) Physically Install a clean Samsung 850 Pro 500 into the new target machine.
    3) Put the source disk in a usb-based disk case and attach it to the target machine.
    4) Boot to a diskcopy program from the optical drive on the target machine.
    5) Copy the system disk, with all my ancillary programs and such, onto the target machine
    6) Restore the source disk to the source machine.
    7) Boot the target machine and (here's what I'm hoping) have the target machine validate/activate windows 7
    8) reactivate office on the target machine, and reinstall the Adobe license
    9) reactivate office on the source machine
I would then have two functional machines, a main (target) and a spare.
Will this work?  Or must I install win 7 from scratch?
IF this is not possible, do the W530 Bioses have a windows s/n that is version specific? In other words, if I can dig up Windows Ultimate (I'd like to get bitlocker), can I install that instead of pro?
    Thanks!

I have to disagree with you, DSperber.  First of all Microsoft doesn't care if you install Windows, as long as you have a valid COA and your version matches that COA.    You can actually download the Windows 7 ISOs for the Windows version you need!  I understand that they legally require a COA on each Win machine sold, to allow folks to rebuild blown systems.  This is discussed on the microsoft Windows 7 forum:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/where-can-i-download-wind...
You can download the ISO, load it, and then use the COA key to validate.  Apparently while Microsoft requires this printed COA, they prefer it to be used only in extreme cases, as when the oem SLP does not work.  I take this to mean that Microsoft WANTS you to install the OEM software, rather than bother them.  Because if you use the printed COA activation key, you have to contact MS to validate it.
Some more information is here:  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/what-is-different-between...
The point is, the COA sticker on the computer vouches that you are entitled to have a valid Windows license on that computer.  It may be that Lenovo doesn't want you to use the recovery disks from another computer.  If so, your note would seem to imply that Lenovo is actually more restrictive about their software than Microsoft!
I understand that using the recovery disks from another computer may seem to deprive Lenovo of the 50 bucks they get when you order them.  I wish I could have saved that money several times.  But hey, these disks aren't customized.  You call in with your model number and serial number, and Lenovo sends out recovery disks with the approprate version of windows originally sold with the machine (sorry, Vista customers!), with the OEM SLP.  So its not a licensing issue, it's a (very small) revenue issue.  And every time someone is able to resurrect their Lenovo machine without a hassle and without that $50, it's worth far, far more in terms of good will.  Perhaps saving that 50 bucks is what pushes me over the edge to buy a new W541 or W550!

  • CR produces modern SQL joining on one machine and old style on another

    Hi.
I have a configuration related question that I hope someone here could help me with. The background is that we are two project members that have very similar setup, but where one crusial outcome differs between the environments and this difference is a real obstacle to the project. I assume that there is a way to fix it but I cannot find out how.
So, what actually differs is that when I use the Crystal Designer to build up a report query (using the Database expert, Data and Links), the SQL that is produced by the CR Designer uses the modern approach to table joining with the join conditions in the FROM clause (i.e. by jusing "INNER JOIN" and "OUTER JOIN" statements) wheras my collegue's CR Designer produces old style table joining with the join conditions in the where clause and using the join operator to achieve outer joins. Now, the problem arises when we both make changes in the same rpt file and when there is a need to use outer joins in a way that is not allowed with the old style joining.
So, my question is where (in what component) this behaviour is configured. We are both using CR2008 (different builds but I did not find this issue looking at the changelog) and Oracle db connection using the JDBC provider.
I am grateful for any help.
    Kind regards,
    Mikael

    Thanks for your anwer Don.
I had hoped that there was a more "user friendly" approach to getting the configurations correct. Neither of us have experience in the tools you mentioned and the same goes for making registry changes etc in general. For now, it seems that we can live with the problem. Maybe we will dig into it again at a later stage.
    Kind regards.

  • Can I use aperture library on more than one machine

    My situation is thus:
I have a Macbook Pro on which my Aperture Library resides, in wherever Aperture decided to put it when I bought the software.
I now have a iMac, which obviously will be better than the Macbook for photo editing.
But I want to be able to take my Aperture Library with me when I take the Macbook out and about, and if necesary still edit on the Macbook.
Is there any way to share the Aperture Library, so that I can edit on the iMac, but leave the library on the Macbook, and then edit on the Macbook if I wish.
I am the only user, and will only be using Aperture on one machine at any one time.
I have searched archives but not managed to find the answer.

Is it possible to simply share the directory that contains the necessary file(s).
If your Library is in the location that aperture picks by default, then it will be in your "Pictures" folder - look for a file with a name like "Aperture Library. aplibrary".
What you will need to share depends on your import strategy for the master images. If you use managed masters, and all your master images reside inside the Aperture library, then you simply need to make this library file accessible  or copy it to an external disk.
If on the other hand your masters are referenced, then I would recommend to consolidate them into the library before you share the library and then share the consolidated library.
If you will share your library over the network or just by moving it to an external device is really up to you, but you might consider  the following pros and cons:
    - If you want to profit from the faster CPU on your iMac, then you should keep the library on the fastes volume that is available, and a network volume might be much slower than a directly connected volume.
    - if the network fails during a critical operation your library might get corrupted, if it resides on a network volume - there have been quite a few problems reported in this forum.
That is why I suggested to use your Macbook as directly mounted external volume, that leaves the library in its place on the Macbook Pro - no need to copy - and you have a very quick and stable connection,  but the decision is yours to make. You will have to be comfortable with the workflow you choose.

  • Have multiple iTunes libraries on one machine?

    Hi,
I want to have multiple iTunes libraries on one machine (with two different hard drives, internal fore mp3s and external for AAC files). One library is composed of mp3s for an iPod, I want the other library to have AAC audio files for burning CDs. I would rather the libraries not be mixed.
I have read the article (#301748) for migrating an iTunes library and am preparing to migrate one of the libraries on to a external hard drive.
I have read about using Libra to maintain two different libraries on one machine. I was wondering if anyone does this and if they have encountered any problems? Is there a better solution?
    Thank you,
    TPK

It's one thing to want two music libraries on one machine and another to want two music libraries on one user account. For the latter, here's what I've done.
I created folders in my iTunes folder called, say, Main Library Folder and Second Library Folder. (These could be anywhere you find convenient.) I dragged my regular iTunes Library file into the Main Library Folder. Then I opened iTunes and created my second music library. When I finished that, I closed iTunes and dragged the just-created iTunes Library file into the Second Library Folder.
If I want to use my main iTunes library, before opening iTunes I drag an alias (Cmmd-Option-drag) of the iTunes Library file from the Main Library Folder into the iTunes folder. Then, when I open iTunes, iTunes reads my main library file. And of course, it works the same way for the second library.
Of course, you could just shuffle the actual library files into position in the iTunes folder from their holding areas, but I strongly preferred to get myself into the habit of relying on aliases, so I could leave the actual library file alone in their respective folders. You most definitely would not want to accidentally overwrite one of your iTunes Library files.
I'm sure one of the shareware products would do a more elegant job, but this just shows you that it's not a difficult process.
The alternative is to set up separate user accounts to access different libraries on the same machine. This has real benefits and, to me, should be the first option one considers. It's easier on the brain, as it sticks to iTunes' one-user-one-library model, and there's absolutely no risk of getting libraries confused. Fast User Switching on the Mac makes going back and forth between accounts easy. But if you really want to avoid using different accounts, and it's only you that has to keep things straight, the approach of jumping back and forth between different libraries in the same user account should be OK.

  • How to copy/move Portal database from one machine to another?

I am receiving a ORA-22973 error (size of object identifier exceeds maxmum size allowed) on the wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table when attempting to import my entire "portal30" schema from one database to another on different Windows NT Servers.
Background: I had Portal 3.0.9.8 installed, configured, and running with the following setup:
    Machine 1: Windows NT 4.0 SP 6, Oracle 9iAS 1.0.2.2, Oracle Portal 3.0.9.8
    Machine 2: Windows NT 4.0 SP 6, Oracle 8i Database 8.1.7.0.0
We no longer have use of Machine 2 and needed to move the database over to Machine 1.
    I performed the following steps:
    1. Installed Oracle 8i database 8.1.7.0.0 on Machine 1.
    2. Set up the tablespaces in the database on Machine 1 to match the same names and sizes of the tablespaces in the database on Machine 2.
    3. Used the Oracle "exp" command to export the entire database that resided on Machine 2.
    4. Copied the ".dmp" file to Machine 1.
    5. Used the Oracle "imp" command to import the entire database on Machine 1.
    6. The import completed successfully with warnings. But I had received the ORA-22973 error during the import process.
    7. After it completed I compared the list of tables and packages in the "portal30" schema between the two databases. The wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table is missing.
    8. I tried to export and import only the wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table between the two databases, but continue to receive the ORA-22973 error.
Without the table being created, access to the portal cannot be achieved.
    Here are my questions:
    1. Is there anyway to create the wwsec_enabler_config_info$ table without receiving the noted error?
    2. Is there any other workable way to get the portal database from Machine 2 to Machine 1?
I am aware of the portal import/export utilities but that would require me to run through the 2 hour install of Portal 3.0.9.8 on the database on Machine 1 and then individually export and import all the portal components (security, pages, applications, content library, etc). I merely wanted to transfer the entire database from one machine to another, so I felt the Oracle exp/imp utilities would be quicker and less work.

    Hi,
I've been hitting problems with Portal 3.0.9.8.1 against 8.1.7.2.1 on NT - i.e., Intermedia not working at all, and have been advised by support to move back to 8.1.7.1.1.
I don't want to lose any of my content in the Portal since the db upgrade and am wondering on what is the best way to do this.
The version of the Portal will be the same so I am hoping I can just use the Portal export and import utilities, as afterall, it is just data and the schema structures are the same between db versions. I'm also hoping that the Portal export doesn't use the standard Oracle EXP tool as it doesn't work anymore on 8.1.7.2.1 on NT!!

    John

  • How many Instances can I install on one machine?

    Hi Folks,
Do you know how many oracle instances I can install on my Win OS machine.
I already have three different instances. Typically how many instances Oracle recommends to setup in one machine to ensure performance improvement?
I use Oracle 9 and oracle10g both. In fact, Oracle9 in Solaris and oracle10g on win.
    Regards,
    Amir

In general, it recommends one instance per server
in a production environment, for a variety of
    reasons (maintainability, backup/recovery, easier to
tune, better use of resources). If you have 100 productives databases, it is very probable that you won't be able to have one server per database.
Again, it depends on your number of users, processors and ram... But if you 16G ram and 16 processors, you should well be able to able to have 20 databases with not too much activity.
The number of 20 here means truely nothing. I admit. But recommending one instance per server is not ok.
Many applications require to have a separate database. It is the double administration necessary, but it is better than the troubles generated when 2 software vendors are sharing the same db.
For development, I have some systems with over 50 instances running with 16g ram and 8 cpus.

I have one folder on an XSAN that one machine can not make changes to. Whenever I try to duplicate or copy a file in this folder I get 'The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).'
The permissions are fine, and I have trashed the finder plist and reset the NVRAM.
    Anyone have a answer?
    Thanks

Tips I received so far (thanks to A-Mac via Twitter http://www.a-mac.nl and Remco Kalf http://www.remcokalf.nl/)
    - make sure you have at least 10% of your harddisk in free space (I had only 5%).
    - do a PRAM-reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
    - perform a hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
    - make a complete backup (with for example Carbone Clone Copier, see http://www.bombich.com/)
    - after complete backup: use diskwarrior (boot from Diskwarrior DVD, first perform diagnostics, then perform "Rebuild" which rebuilds your file directory).
So far I only cleared up some space on my HD, and already the problem occurs less.
Still, I will go through the other tips too.
    (will post progress)

  • How to copy OVD configuration from one machine to another?

We have two machines with OVD servers on them. The configurations should be identical from one machine to the other. We suspect there is a problem with the configuration on one of them. We need to know how to copy OVD configuration from one machine to another.
Can you tell us how to do that?

well i have this in mind which may help you.
You would need to have a public ip address to the machine you have consoled to and on internet.
Download the tftp software from below link.
    http://tftpd32.jounin.net/
This software does not only act as the tftp server but also you can select the interface of you ethernet card as tftp server ip address.
For ex if you are connected to a console and have a wireless card which is connected to internet also you connect you eth lan card to the eth or fast eth of the router.
you can select which ever interface you want to act as the tftp server.
you will need to add ip addres for you lan card and also config the router port as same if needed.

  • "This device can perform faster...." - but can it really?

Ok, seems like my iPhone 3G does not really support USB 2.0. Every time I plug it in I get the "This device can perform faster..." message indicating that it is running in USB 1.1 mode - even though the port is USB2.0 and if I plug in a USB2.0 external drive into the same port it works like a charm (at full 2.0 speed).
Give how unstable iPhone's been and how often it requires a full reload, USB1.1 speed is just too painful.
Anyone else run into this? Any suggestions on how to make it run at full speed?
    Thanks.

The funny thing is that most of the content on my iPod was DRM free MP3's - did not matter, they were all inaccessible).
All in all, even if you are, I am not willing to play Russian roulette wondering with each sync if I will be forced to waste hours deleting and restoring my iPhone (and with USB2 broken, it takes hours and hours) and then re-set up all my email, etc - because those settings apparently are not important enough to be saved by a backup - and then deal with loosing app data. Even if majority of the people do not have this issue, enough people did, including myself.
And by the way, when I was running 7.7.1, the USB problem was there just the same - so the only "solution" to it seems to be to sit and wait for apple to fix it.

  • Multiple 8800GT's in one machine

    Hi,
I'm building a machine which will act as a server for image processing. It will use openGL offscreen rendering to answer clients requests.
I was wondering if it is possible to put multiple 8800GT's in one machine to get performance boost?
I know Macs don't support SLI, but I was thinking that if my image processing modules run in 2 instances I could potentially server two clients with no performance loss.
    Can anyone help out here?

No, the Management Console has one WebService page. You would need to install the Management Console a second time for that.
