Performance for 8i and 9i

Dear all
What is the performance difference between 8i and 9i on the same hardware and resources.
Thank you!!
Kwan

We did some benchmark on our platform (Unix Tru64 5.1A) and we got some very very bad surprises !
Some jobs took twice the time to run in 9i than they did in 8i. We had to ajust the parameter "filesystemio_options=ASYNCH" to have better performance, but we still have some problem with the CPU Usage.
With 9i we saw an increase from 20% to 45% in CPU usage for some of our jobs. We opened a TAR on May 12 2003 and a BUG was filled on May 14.
Since May 14 we invested a lot of time to help Oracle reproduce the problem and now this BUG is a priority 1 but we still have no solution.
From what I have heard the problem is limited to 64 b. platform.
Good luck !

  • Help! Need a good laptop for school and editing. Budget is around $800 (Canadian).

I'm looking for a laptop for around $800 Canadian, I'm starting a science and technology program in high school so I will need decent graphics performance for editing and 3D modelling. My budget is a bit flexible but only by around $100 for a significantly better product. I've had my eye on the Lenovo y40-80 but some people say it's great and other call it a dissapointment. I was thinking about either ASUS, Lenovo, or MSI.  Any suggestions would be helpful, Thanks.

I own an ASUS and a MSI laptop.  A little advice for you.... Visit the store and see if you can play a YouTube video.one laptop display appears dimmer and not so brightthe other laptop does a very poor job of rendering colors (especially with skin)Can't say this is a problem with today's newer machines.  But it was something that has troubled me.

Does anyone know how well the Intel Iris Pro installed on new 15" MacBook Pros performs using Photoshop and Lightroom?  I have seen some differing opinions out there, and I would rather not shell out the extra cash for the Nvidia if I don't have to. I mostly do photo editing for business and personal use. I have not used the 3D function in Photoshop, but I would like to know that I could.

  • Oracle performance, slow for larger and more complex results.

    Hello Oracle forum,
At the moment i have a Oracle database running and i'm specifically interested in the efficiency spatial extension for webmaps and GIS.
I've been testing the database with large shape files (400mb - 1gigabyte) loaded them into the database with shp2sdo->sql*loader.
Using Benchmark factory i've test the speed of transactions an these drop relatively quickly. I've started with a simple query:
SELECT id FROM map WHERE id = 3 when I increase the amount of id's to 3-10000 the performance decreases drastically.
    so :
SELECT id FROM map WHERE id >=3 and id <= 10000
The explain plan shows the second query , both query's use the index.
    | Id | Operation | Name | Rows | Bytes | Cost (%CPU)| Time |
    | 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 9828 | 49140 | 22 (0)| 00:00:01 |
    |* 1 | INDEX RANGE SCAN| SYS_C009650 | 9828 | 49140 | 22 (0)| 00:00:01 |
    Statistics
    0 recursive calls
    0 db block gets
    675 consistent gets
    0 physical reads
    0 redo size
134248 bytes sent via SQL*Net to client
7599 bytes received via SQL*Net from client
    655 SQL*Net roundtrips to/from client
    0 sorts (memory)
    0 sorts (disk)
    9796 rows processed
The statistics does not show very weird stuff, but maybe i'm wrong. Nothing changed in the explain plan except for the range scan instead of a unique scan.
The query returns lots of results and this is I think the reason why my measured time of the query is large. The time it takes returning large amount of rows increases quickly for more rows.
. Can this be solved? The table has been analyzed before starting the query.
The parameters of the database are not really changed from standard, I increased the amount of memory used by Oracle 11g to 1+ gigabyte.
and let the database itself decide how it uses this memory.
The system specs are and db_parameters are:
    Oracle 11G
Memory Processor # of CPUs OS OS Version OS B
    1.99 gb Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz 2 Microsoft WindowsXP 5.2600
0=Oracle decides which value will be given
    cursor_sharing EXACT
    cursor_space_for_time FALSE
    db_block_size 8192
    db_recovery_file_dest_size 2147483648
    diagnostic_dest C:\DBBENCHMARK\ORACLE
    dispatchers (PROTOCOL=TCP) (SERVICE=gistestXDB)
    hash_area_size 131072
    log_buffer 5656576
    memory_max_target 1115684864
    memory_target 1048576000
    open_cursors 300
    parallel_max_servers 20
    pga_aggregate_target 0
    processes 150
    resumable_timeout 2162688
    sort_area_size 65536
    Sga=632mb
    PGA=368mb
    javapool=16mb
    largepool=8mb
    other=8mb
So I indexed and analyzed the data what did i forget? I can speed it up with soft parsing, but the problem remains . Hopefully this enough information for some analysis, does anyone experienced the same problems ? I tested with SQLdeveloper the speed and is shows the same speed as Benchmark factory. What could be wrong with the parameters?
    Thanks,
    Jan Martijn

    select count(id) , resulted in 3669015 counted id's.
The database counted 18,345,075 rows per second without binded variables , which is ten times slower as your result. This can be possible because of hardware but my question is specifically about the number of rows returned thus large amount of results. The idea was not to compare the speed of "+select count(*)+" statements - but to illustrate that even when dealing with a huge number of rows, one can decrease the amount of I/O that needs to be performed to deal with that number of rows.
Select id from map where id <= 1
4000 rows per second are selected, Rows/sec is a meaningless measurement - due to physical I/O (PIO) versus logical I/O (LIO). You can select a 100 rows and these require PIO. Resulting in an elapsed time of 1 sec. You can select a 1000 rows that require only LIO. With an an elapsed time of 0.5 sec.
Is the 2nd method better or faster? No. It simply needed less time to be spend on I/O as the data blocks were in the buffer cache (memory) and did not require very slow and expensive disk access.
Another database i testes returns 6 times 25425 rows back per second for the same query (100 ids). What could be a parameter that limits the output speed of multiple rows in a query?.Every single row that needs to be read/processed by a SQL statement has a cost associated with it. This cost is not consistent! It differs depending on how that row can reached - what I/O paths are available to find that rows? Does the full table need to be scanned? Does an index need to be scanned? Is there a unique index that can be used? Is the table partitioned and can partitioning pruning be applied and local partition indexes used? Are there are user functions that need to be applied to the row's data? Etc. Etc.
All these together determine how fast the client gets a row from the cursor executing that SQL.
The more rows you want to process, the bigger the increase in the cost/expense - specifically more I/O. As I/O is the biggest expense (slowest ito elapsed time).
So you want to do as little I/O as possible and read as little data as possible. For example, instead of a full table scan, a fast full index scan. For example, instead of reading the complete contents of a 10GB table, reading the complete contents of a 12MB index for that table.
I suggest that you read the Oracle Performance Guide to familiarise yourself with basic performance concepts. Use http://tahiti.oracle.com for finding the the guide for your applicable Oracle version.

  • Required account rights for Alert and Performance/Topology collection and operations SDK

    Hi,
My question is with regards to required user role privileges for performing certain operations using Operations Manager 2007 R2 SDK.
    - Registering an internal connector to MS SCOM for alert subscription:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb437580.aspx
    - Collection and acknowledging (or closing) of alerts
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb424130.aspx
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh327168.aspx
Based on experience and this article (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212758.aspx) on how to configure a product connector subscription I'm guessing
that user account needs to have Operations Manager Administrators user role privileges, however I was unable to find this documented in context of SDK.
Are requirements the same for GetMonitoringPerformanceData and GetConfigurationGroups methods?

    Thank you and kind regards,

    Hi,
As far as I know, to close an alert the user should be at least an Operator role. Please refer to the below article to get more information about SCOM user role profiles:

    Hi,
You can use Performance Monitor and add the required counters.
Check the below Technet article on Performance Monitor.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749249.aspx
Below are the steps to monitor the process in Performance Monitor.
    - Go to the Performance Monitor.
    - Right-click on the graph and select "Add Counters".
    - In the "Available counters" list, open the "Process" section by clicking on the down arrow next to it. Select "% Processor Time" (and any other counter you want).
    - In the "Instances of selected object" list, select the process you want to track. Then click on "Add >>" button. Click on OK.

  • Performance upgrade for Lightroom and Photoshop on a MacPro Quad Xeon

I have a MacPro Quad Xeon 2.26(on OSX 10.5.8) with an internal 1tb RAID 0 for a PS scratch. It has 8gb of RAM and I run my apps off the main (boot) drive. My LR cache resides on this boot drive as well. I have dual ACD 23's each running off a GeForce GT 120.
I'm looking for opinions and options to make my life faster.
    1. upgrade to 10.6?
    2. RAM up to 16gb?
    3. OWC Mercury Pro SSD 115gb for my boot and a second for my user files?
I have been reading Diglloyd's stuff but I'm looking for other opinions on cheap speed.
    thanks in advance
    R

Have you ever cracked open activity monitor? Unless your CPU's regularly peak out, they aren't your weak link.
Congratulations - they are also the most expensive to replace since you basically have to buy a new computer! I'd start with the hard drives - absolutely the slowest link in any modern computer. Start off with an SSD for the system/Applications. Then try moving files you are working on to the SSD to see if that makes a difference as well. I don't know about LightRoom, but with Aperture, once the database files in the Aperture library fragment it's performance drops off dramatically. Changing my Aperture library to be on an SSD and referencing my masters on my internal RAID made a dramatic difference. It feels like I have a new computer!
If you have lots of scratch activity you could be low on memory. Or you could be dealing with photoshop wonkiness like this:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshopCS5-Warmup.html
Throwing hardware at software coding errors like the above won't get you anywhere.
Start with activity monitor. If you aren't routinely maxing out your CPU's focus on disk drives and then memory.

  • Optimize performance for dedicated email and web use?

Just bought one of the new MBPs. I am now using the G4 as a dedicated workstation with an external monitor exclusively for email and surfing. Email performance is fine, but it takes a long time to load web pages. What can I do to tweak its performance?

Ah, I see you have a lot of catching up, and many questions.
You appear to be running OS10.4.11, which is fine. In the future, upgrades for bugs and security will diminish as Apple phases it out.
OS updates: Have Mac running and connected to the internet. Under the Apple menu, choose "Software Update." This connects to the Apple software servers and determines if you need any Apple software updates on your Mac. Follow instructions and do all updates it tells you about. After doing this, run Software Update again until it says all software is up to date.
Flash and Shockwave are software plug-ins that Adobe makes for your web browser (like Apple's Safari). These plugins are generally used to display animations or video in the browser. They tend to use a lot of CPU power, thus potentially slowing down the computer. You have to go to the Adobe site and check for the latest free versions of these plugins for your computer.
Java and Javascript are programming environments that can work with the OS to display various tricks on web pages, such as drop-down menus. Sometimes they cause security concerns, so the Preferences settings for web browsers allow turning them off or on. When running Safari, under the Safari menu column, choose Preferences..., then in the resulting preferences window, choose the Security tab. There are checkboxes for Web Content for Java, Javascript, plugins and popups. It would be faster and more secure to NOT run these, but you wouldn't see a lot of many web pages. Java is updated from Apple Software Update.
Many other general aspects of your computer affect speed.
-For best speed, you want as much RAM (memory) as the machine can take in your case (probably 2GB on 2 DIMMs IIRC). I run with 1GB however, and fine it adequate for email and web. Under the Apple menu, choose "About this Mac" and the resulting popup tells how much RAM you have.
-You want at least 10% of the space on the hard drive to be free - it's used for virtual memory when real memory runs low. Click once on the icon of the main hard drive, usually named, "Macintosh HD." Then under the FILE menu, choose "Get Info." The resulting popup describes, among other things, the total capacity of the drive, how much is available, and how much has already been used.
-For speed, you should also run from AC power pack. There are some settings in System Preferences/Energy Saver that can reduce CPU speed during battery operation.
-You should avoid running any software that steals CPU power. There should be no need to run tricky software for just email and web, so getting rid of all non-essential software should help. How to check everything is beyond the scope of this post.
-Check the speed of your internet connection. There are several free, online net speed testers. Note, they usually use either Flash or Java/Javascript! one is http://www.speedtest.net Note that the speed will varying depending on time of day, location of test endpoint, and a zillion other factors.
-The Powerbook G4 is getting old and slow compared to the latest machines. I just got the New York Times homepage in about 5 seconds on my Powerbook G4 (ethernet, cleared Safari cache and history first). On a MacPro dual 3GHz Intel Xenon, it's maybe half that time. There are many factors you have no control over. On many web pages, advertising forms a lot of the page, and those ads come from other servers, often slowing down the page. I avoid even trying to play Flash videos on the G4.
You could have other problems, too, hardware or software. Sometimes, it just pays to buy a newer model.

  • How is the performance of Mac Pro if i use it as host for windows and linux virtual machines.

How is the performance of Mac Pro if i use it as host for windows and linux virtual machines.
I am planning to buy a high performance PC to run my Windows and Linux servers as vitrual machines for my testing purposes.
Initially i planned to build my own computer with recommended configurations but considering space constaints and cooling factors i think Mac Pro can be a choice. But need some inputs if Mac pro (Intel Xeon E5, 12 GB RAM) is good for running virtual Machines.

You could even run Windows natively and still run your VM servers.
I have seen reports and such on MacRumors and elsewhere - run Windows natively as well as VMs (can also do testing and run Mavericks in a VM under Mavericks)
The fast internal PCIe-SSD, plus 6 or 8 cores, and 32-64GB RAM. Of course for $5,000 for 8-core, some Thunderbolt storage and 32GB/64GB RAM you can buy some serious hardware.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Or quit the settings app and restart.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
