Permissions can't be repaired

I'm having some apparently random kernel panics which I'm trying to track down. Attempts at permissions repair (using both Apple Disk Utility and Diskwarrior) give me a list of the following permissions that "have been modified and will not be repaired":
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /
DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "sbin/umount" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/quota" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/
Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Extensions/webdavfs.kext/Contents/Resources/loadwebdav" has been
modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/pppd" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/vpnd" has been modified and will not be repaired
Also, each permission repair throws up the same vast list of incorrect permissions but with no indication that the permissions were fixed - for example:
"Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/CoreVideo.framework/Versions/A/CodeResources", should be -
rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--"
But it never tells me "owner and group corrected" or "permissions corrected" - is this a change in reporting since Tiger or is Leopard's disk utility just verifying when I tell it to repair? The same long list of issues keeps showing up each time...
I'm DEFINITELY using "REPAIR disk permissions" and not just "verify disk permissions". Have tried repairing using Apple Disk Utility on the MBP, and also by booting from two different firewire drives (one carrying a clone of the MBP system, the other a Time Machine backup with a clone of the installer disk on it). I've also tried repairing permissions using Disk Warrior 4.1 with the same result.
What next?
I have multiple backups of my data and a Time Machine backup - if necessary I can do a clean reinstall of the OS and then restore my account from the Time Machine backup. If this is necessary, would welcome advice on the best strategy (restoring from time machine during OS installation or using Migration assistant after installation is complete).

several of those errors can be safely ignored. Some others of the ones you mention are not listed on that page and I don't know about them. Is your computer behaving strangely?
I'm getting intermittent kernel panics (which I acknowledge may be nothing to do with this issue), apart from that it seems to run fine.
Thus the vast majority of messages reported by users are false positives and can be ignored, but technically, due to the sensitive nature of 'setuid' files "SUID" messages should only be ignored after confirming that they are in fact false positives.
As Pullman points out, the following alerts I'm getting aren't listed in the apple document:
Warning: SUID file "sbin/umount" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/quota" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Extensions/webdavfs.kext/Contents/Resources/loadwebdav" has been
modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/pppd" has been modified and will not be repaired
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/vpnd" has been modified and will not be repaired
Question is, what next? I've taken various other actions in regard to the kernel panics (such as uninstalling potentially problematic software and dumping corrupted prefs files) I'm waiting to see if any of those actions have solved the problem. Should I be worrying about the SUID alerts as a separate problem or just hope the next software update fixes them?

  • The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it. iPhoto can try to repair the permissions.

Hi, I have the following message when opening iPhoto:
The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it. iPhoto can try to repair the permissions.
I select repair, enter my password and I get the following:
The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it.
This happened a few weeks ago and I have been fumbelling around trying to fix it. I have no backup servers or shared access. My iPhone and iPad 'used to' pump pictures via iCloud but this has stopped.
I am adminstrator with open & edit rights.
    I'm using a MacBook Air rinning OX 10.9 (Software  OS X 10.9 (13A603)
    PLEASE HELP!

Similar problem but not quiet the same:
Please bear with me as I am very new to this subject.
1: Using a MacBook Air OSX 10.7.5 and it is WiFi connected to a Time Capsule.
2: Overnight I have done a complete back-up. Checked the data files and all correct.
3: I can open the files on the TC except for the iPhoto Library as I want to check visually that they are there. All 2,388.
4: The iPhone Library on the TC will not allow me to look in.
5: the iPhoto Library on the MBA allows me access and I can view etc all the 2,388.
Q1: So why can I not look into the TC's iPhone Library? Or how do I open that library so I can look in?
Q2: how can I export data back from the TC to the MBA if ever I needed to do that?
Thanks for helping out a virgin in these matters.

  • I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13

After installing iTunes update 11.1, I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13. When I attempt to repair Disk Permissions, there appear dozens of items showing that "Permissions differ on "Applications/iTunes.app....", then it says that it has been repaired. However, when I do a second or third repair immediately afterwards, I see the same thing again.

    Thanks for any help.

  • When I run Verify Disk Permissions I get something that can not be repaired.

When I run Verify Disk Permissions I get something that can not be repaired. The message I get is
    Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .
When I run a repair disk permissions it does not get rid of this.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

I would recommend that you don't waste your time with "Verify."  Go straight to "Repair Permissions."
The chances are excellent that you will get that one advisory, and at the end it will say "Repair Permissions Completed."
There are lots of those notations that will seem to us everyday users as an "error."  But it's just noted changes.
If after running "Repair" it says "Repair Permissions Could Not be Completed," that's the only time you ned to worry.
And, I totally agree with what Niel said.  Sorry, did not see his reply when I poster.

  • Drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired?

I have had a Lacie 1TB 7200RPM external drive for about  3 years now. In the last two days I got this message when I went into disk utility. "drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired". I was able to back up all the info off of the drive.
Is this a drive problem or a hardware problem. I am using esata and an esata card. Not sure what the card is.
    Any diagnostics.
I ran a verify and repair permissions and was told the drive is OK.

    Do this:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Why did so many permissions need to be repaired after Mavericks?

Here's my story regarding Repairng Permissions; its seems a repair is the only thing keeping my Mac running.
I've a Mac Book Pro 15" Spring 2011, been doing the upgrades etc ever since, but after Mavericks upgrade I was having issues never seen before with my Apple upgrades.  In short after upgrade I was getting gray screen, blue screen etc. Random screen splits with horizontal lines.
Took many tries to reboot, safe reboot, clear pram, etc.  I ran EtreCheck got rid of lots of things. I broke out disk and ran full hardware test - all good.  I have reinstalled OS X, as well as done two clean reinstalls of everything.  Even after that, I would still crash from time to time, with gray and blue screen either after re-awakening or simply opening iPhoto.
Nothing in panic or crash logs except this: 12/29/13 1:49:17.286 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[294]: (com.apple.ReportCrash) Falling back to default Mach exception handler. Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self
Once I finally got in, I went to disk utiloity and ran verify permissions and saw many issues, then ran repair disk permissions.  I wanted to keep the log of all the changes and went to print and save as PDF - it was over 521 pages of permissions fixed! I didn't bother saving that file, I wish I did now.
I've been runing about 2 days without blue, gray crash so I am hoping that fixed it - but if this was a plane, no way would I fly it.
My question:  After the both reinstalls and clean installs, why would so many permissions need to be repaired?

For some reason, after I run repair permissions in Disk Utility, I can run it again, and the same problems are "corrected."
    That's a waste of time.
Is Disk Utility actually doing anything?
Basically, nothing on second or subsequent runs when the function is used repeatedly.
It seems like every time I run repair permissions the same problems are present. Has this happened to anyone else?

My imac G5 isight September 2006 hard drive takes several attempts to mount. When it does it works fine. Is there anything I can do to repair or do I just abandon it and sell it for parts?

It's an Intel iMac the last G5s were built in 2005.
    How to identify iMac models
    1. Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Startup Disk and check to besure the that OS X 10.6 on the Macintosh HD is set as the Startup Disk.
    2. Start up from you Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD, navagate to Utilities > Disk Utility and Repair the Macintosh HD.

  • Disk permissions that cannot be repaired

I have two disk permissions that cannot be repaired and wanted to know if there was anything I can do about them. The are: Warning: SUID file "System/library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool"has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning SUID file "usr/bin/lppasswd" had been modified and will not be repaired
I just uninstalled Skype and reinstalled it than ran repair disk permission when these showed up. I have run repair disk permissions several times afterward and they always show up now. Thanks for any help!

Installing OS X 5.5 combo upgrade will clear the problem. I had exactly the same warning downloaded the combo and install straight over the incremental 5.5 update and everything is now fine. Here is the link

safari will not quit. this seems to be happening a lot lately. any idea why or what i can do to repair this?

    Ok Chris..
Might be a good time to run Disk Utility in case the startup disk needs repairng.
Launch Disk Utility located in /Applications/Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then click First Aid.
Click: Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, click Repair Disk

  • HT202731 SUIT in disc utility says has been modified can not be repaired how can fix

Open disk utility check macintosh had report says SUID has been modified and can't be repaired help

Ignore. It's innocuous and has no impact.
OS X Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore

  • "repair permissions" isn't actually repairing permissions?

it seems that "repair permissions" isn't actually repairing permissions here.
I've just come home, switched the Macbook and thought I'd verify permissions again.
    "Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Versions/A/Frame works/QuartzComposer.framework", should be lrwxr-xr-x , they are drwxr-xr-x ."
    and
    "Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Versions/A/Frame works/ImageKit.framework", should be lrwxr-xr-x , they are drwxr-xr-x ."
.... came up. I repaired, rebooted and re-verified. The same two entries came up again.

    Where are our Apple gurus?
I can't speak for any gurus, but where I've been is doing other things for the last couple of days because the Apple Discussions software/servers were so seriously messed up that attempting to do anything in AD was quite pointless, and led to having a very bad attitude due to frustration.
As to whether you actually have a problem: as long as everything works, and the real folders are where they are supposed to be, don't worry about it.
    This one:
    System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Versions/A/Framewo rks/QuartzComposer.framework
    Should have the original here:
    "/System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/QuartzCompose r.framework"
It the originals are in place, having extra copies rather than symbolic links doesn't matter. You just have an extra 25MBs of space taken up by duplicate folders.

  • How do I backup to my external hd on 10.6.8 if the disk is damaged and can't be repaired?

Hi! So, I'll get straight to the point. I'm running 10.6.8 on my mac, which is about 5 years old. I attempted to install OSX Mavericks last night, so I could update some of my software. Anyways, the computer restarts and opens up the installer for OSX Mavericks, but after about a minute of installing, it shows that the Mavericks install failed. The upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired.
Could someone tell me (step by step) how to back up all of my data, erase the disk, and install again? I have an external HD by the way.
    Help would be much appreciated!

So, essentially you're saying that I need to download one of these programs to my external hd. But, how do I boot it from my mac if I can't get past the installation screen of Mavericks? I'm running on my other mac right now, if that helps. I've tried to use disk utility to repair, but it's greyed out. I honestly just want to retrieve all of my data, wipe the drive, and then install a new one. I just want to know how to do that.

  • The file is damaged and it can not be repaired (PDF Printing in Z-program)

I am opening this thread on behalf of my colleague Merja regarding a problem while trying to print using the Integrated ITS 6.40.
The problem happens when using webgui directly. Support Package level is 21 and kernel 640 patch 196. Note 771683 regarding printer with access
method 'F' and device type 'PDF1' is already in place. 'Output immediately' opens the preview. Error still exists when using "print preview" button.
The issue occurs when trying to review the Employment Contract within the portal UI. The actual print is finished correctly but the "Print Review" function returns HTTP 500 error, "The file is damaged and it can not be repaired".
When we perform the same activity in system R/3 within the transaction SE38, with our Z-program everything works correctly and no problems occur.
Could you please help solving this issue?
    Thanks and regards,
    Merja

Not sure if the flollowing will be of use, but worth a try?…
Try changing the .ai to .eps or .pdf to see if anything happens to see if it makes a difference to importing or exporting as a pdf?
If you have Indesign, try importing the file into Indesign then saving that file as a pdf or/and export as a Indesign eps file.
Sorry I cannot be of any more assistance.
    Good luck!

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks failed - disk is damaged and can't be repaired.

    Hello,
I'm afraid the answer is exactly what I don't want.  But here is my situation.
I've been trying to download and install Mavericks - I was running Snow Leopard.  My system was working fine - I wanted to upgrade so that I could run a game on it - but it required Mavericks.
Finally, it looked like Mavericks was installing.  Once I restarted my computer, I got the following message:
"Install Failed. OS X could not be installed on your computer (there's a big scary yellow triangle with an exclaimation point in it below this). The OS X upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired. After your computer restarts, back up your data, erase your disk, and try installing again. Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
Every time I restart, I get the same message, I can't back up my data and erase my disk like it wants me to; it won't let me. I can't get back to my normal computer. I've tried restarting in Safe Mode, but it doesn't work - it just keeps restarting over and over again. If my computer is really this determined to not let me have Mavericks, fine, but I at least want my old computer back. As it is now, I can't do anything on it besides restart it.
If I could just get to Finder, I could save some files and just reformat it - if the hard disk can be repaired.  Even if it can't, I just need my documents.  Here is the Installer Log:

Thank you for any help you can give me.

You are never going to have the option to repair a disk if you are booted from the same disk.
I think the place to start is boot off your Snow Leopard DVD install disk by holding down the C key on boot up.
Under Utilities drop down menu  you will have access to Disk Utility.
From  here you will have the option to repair Disk (ie not grayed out.)
option: Either insert and wait for the Mac OS X Install DVD window and double-click the Install icon;  or power down, then start up while holding down the "C" key.  Either way, that takes a few minutes.
