Permissions problem copying folders from Leopard to Lion

I just got a new iMac (running Lion) to replace my old G4, running Leopard (10.5.8).
I'm trying to copy entire folders (with many items inside) from the old G4 to the new iMac.
I get a message saying something to the effect that "One or more items can't be copied because you don't have permission to read them" ...
I'm the only one using the machines so it's not a question of ownership or user accounts.
Is there any way (I guess with Terminal or Unix commands) to change the permissions en masse for all the items in a folder at once? I can certainly get info on any individual item or folder and change the ownership that way, but that'll take a long time for folders with many items.
Thanks, in advance, for any help you can provide.

Hello, easiest way is with BatchMod, it's much better/easier than the Finder for recursive Permission changes...

Use the Apply to enclosed items checkbox after dropping a Folder on BatchMod.

  • Software Installer and wireless internet problems after upgrade from Leopard to Lion.

Last weekend I upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro from Leopard to Snow Leopard, and then from Snow Leopard to Lion. I'm having a couple of problems.
First, I cannot get the wireless internet to work. My internet connection is fine, I can plug the ethernet cord in and all is well. But I cannot get wireless signals to work. Have tried both my Airport Express and an old linksys router, and neither seem to work. They both worked just fine before the update. I had very fast wireless internet, and now nothing.  With the Airport Express, when I plug it in iti'll just continuously blink orange, and the Airport Utility refuses to recognize it. The linksys router seems to work, because it puts off a signal and my iPhone connects to it. My computer recognizes the signal, but it won't open any internet pages, says I'm not connected.
Today I tried to install Apple's Migration Assistant software to help with my first problem.  But a funny thing happened.  The software installer says I don't have enough space. But I have plenty- I have almost 200 GB, and I only need 5 MB for the program.  I've never seen this happen before, it's so odd.  Any suggestions?
    I really appreciate any assistance/suggestions!
    Thanks,
    Ellen

You can't purchase Snow Leopard from the Mac App Store.  Or "download" it.  That will be possible for Lion.
For the Apple Online store, why can't you just look for yourself?

  • How can I change my OS from Leopard to Lion?, How can I change my OS from Leopard to Lion?

Now, with the IOS6 fro iPhone, I have got problems to sync my phone with my computer. It says that I am not using a compatible version of OS or something alike.
I am using Leopard and everytime I select "update sofware" it says I have already got the most updated. Same happens when I do for iTunes versions.
I just realized that I can't use "app store" in my compueter neither. Everytime I try to download it, it says I haven't got the version compatible.
I guess it's time to change from Leopard to Lion, but as I haven't got the app store istalled in my computer I don't know what to do or if there is another solution to do it.
    Anyone can help?
    Cheers

You have to upgrade to 10.6.8 to be able to download  10.7 Lion. The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion is part of the 10.6.6 update.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • Copying software between Leopard and Lion

    Hi,
Recent Mac convert here, I downloaded a student copy of Form-Z modelling software and while I know for a fact the programme itself is compatible with Lion, the installer uses Rosetta, so won't install on my macbook pro. I still have the Leopard disks for the home Imac, so it's my understanding that I can reinstall Leopard on the Imac, install the software on Leopard, then copy it across to Lion on the macbook, bypassing the installer.
But how do I copy the installed software from leopard to lion on the macbook? Do I just copy the icon onto my portable hard drive?
Apologies if this has an obvious answer, but after a decade of using windows, I'm basically starting over again.

Don't use it, but you should inquire at the developer's site: http://www.formz.com/products/formz/formzDocumentation.html

  • Problem copying text from word to dreamweaver

    Howdy..
had a problem copying text from a word doc (07) to
dreamweaver, for some strange reason it missed a complete section
in the middle, 2 paragraphs gone... no errors... no blank spaces,
just would not copy and paste the section, everything b4 and after
was fine, the only way to correct this was to copy to
textpad/notepad first and then recopy and paste..
    anybody have any ideas ?
    anyone seen this happen b4?
    cheers
    Pythagonal

nope, there didnt seem to be any special formatting in the
word doc, just a straight forward press release, two of them
actually and they both had sections that didn't copy and paste.
what was very strange was it was sections in the middle of
the docs, and wasnt the same in both, was 2 different areas in
each, just when u copy'd and pasted it gave nothing..
and ive never seen anything like it b4,
ive just upgraded to CS4 a few weeks back and this is the
first time ive noticed it, ill keep my eye out and see if its
somethng to do with the way word is formatting stuff..

I want to give an iPad to my wife to use for work, but her employer won't let her upgrade her Macbook from Leopard to Lion.  It's pointless if she can't use iCloud.  Is there a workaround?

So far Apple has not upgraded the other Mac OS X versions to iCloud.  She can manually enter information to be synced in the cloud but that is really tedious.

  • Is there a step by step guide on upgrading from leopard to lion inlcuding data backup and migration?

is there a step by step guide on upgrading from leopard to lion inlcuding data backup and migration?

Let me just give you the breakdown:
Snow Leopard (10.6) needs to be purchased. You need Snow Leopard because it has the Mac App StoreAlternatively, you could get the Lion USB drive, but much more expensive
Once you have installed Snow Leopard, open the Mac App Store and find OS X Lion. This downloads OS X Lion Installer. After the download finishes, click on it, follow the steps and the installation begins!
No data will be lost during any of the upgrades
Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • I upgraded from leopard to lion and my epson printer will not work. I get a communication error

I upgraded from leopard to lion and my Epson printer will not work. I get a error message comunication error. What can Ido to fix this I bought a new USB cord and it did no good.

I suddenly had the same thing happen. I've had my new iMac for 3 months and at first my Epson Artisan 50 worked okay then yesterday I started getting the same error message other people on this support site have gotten. I tried ALL the advice given (deleating the Epson files from the library folder, etc. reinstalling older software) and nothing worked. With the newest iMac (and operating system) you cannot pick and choose which version of Epson software you want. You must use the 10.8 version or it simply will not open when you've downloaded it. Finally I found the comment above by den.thed and tried the OS X Mountain Lion: Reset the printing system suggested. As much as I hated to lose all my printing presets that took a lot of expiermentation to set up, I was desperate. I tried it and it worked. Now I just have to consult my old computer and try to recreate all my printing set ups.  So to others with Epson / Apple 10.8 issues this may help when everything else fails. Thanks den.thed for your advice.

  • Looking for copy of snow leopard, hate lion but don't want to pay 100$

I am looking for copy of snow leopard for a reasonable price. I hate lion it will not run any of my power pc software that I've spent $$ on. But don't want to pay 100$+ for a copy when a few months ago you could get it for 29$

It's still $29, unless you want to pay $100 for some opportunists selling it through Amazon or eBay.
To upgrade, you must buy Snow Leopard by calling the phone number in the Apple Online Store: 800-MY-APPLE (in the US).
Snow Leopard is not available for download from any legitimate source.
Make sure your system meets Snow Leopard's requirements:
Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" System Requirements
To install Snow Leopard for the first time, you must have a Mac with:
    An Intel processor
An internal or external DVD drive, or DVD or CD Sharing
At least 1 GB of memory (RAM) (additional RAM is recommended)
A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
At least 5 GB of disk space available, or 7 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools

  • Best way to upgrade from Leopard to Lion?

    Hi,
I am planning to upgrade a number of computers in my household and am trying to figure out the best upgrade path for each one of them.
Specifically, my dad uses an iMac running OS 10.5.8. Due to this fact I obviously cannot upgrade it to Lion from the app store, so I will have to do a clean install - meaning erasing the hard drive.
Since I do not want my dad to reorganize his whole computer environment from scratch, I was wondering if I will be able to use Migration Assistant to restore his user with all his files, preferences and cluttered desktop from his Time Machine backup.
    Thanks

    Things to keep in mind
1: Old Rosetta PPC based programs will NOT work in Lion.
2: A machine using PowerPC processors can't upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion, 10.5 is it.
3: A machine with Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo) processors cannot run Lion.
4: Lion is a RADICAL change, to the UI and everything, Snow Leopard is very less traumatic and offers performance tweaks in the video drivers over Leopard, as well as strips out the PPC code your not using on your Intel Mac's.
5: A machine as old to run 10.5 likely has old software, all that will likely need to be replaced under Lion, but perhaps not so much under Snow Leopard.
6: Lion is somewhat unstable, the 2011 Mac's with EFI 2.2 Firmware are being truckloaded into Apple Repair for new logicboards.
7: Lion has issues on older hardware that likely be last on the list for repairs as they are gathering information now about it's problems.
My advice, perhaps upgrade to Snow Leopard and leave Lion alone for a 2011 Mac or beyond hardware when you replace it.
Lion has got at least another YEAR of repairs ahead of it before I consider it as stable as Snow Leopard.
Everything from the AppStore, EFI firmware changes, Thunderbolt fixes and well as UI fixes, MAJOR security issues I can't disclose as well as all the third party programs requiring their fixes and updates.
Leave Lion alone for the time being, unless your a masochist.
And here's one bad security feature, anyone can hack your Mac with Lion like this.
1: Boot the Mac holding Command R keys and select the Terminal
2: Type  resetpassword  and press enter.
    That's it. No disk needed.

  • Has anyone encountered problems copying photos from iPhone 4 to PC (Windows)?

I have been copying photos from my iPhone to a Windows PC but somewhere along the way, the copying just stops. At first I thought that it was because the phone was Auto-Locking but I set Auto-Locking to Never. I eventually had to manually copy missing photos from the phone to PC. I am using Windows Explorer to see all the files in the phone's internal storage, then copying into a folder onto the PC. Don't know if this is a Windows problem or something on the phone but I have never encountered something like this before.

i run a commercial recording studio since 2009 and purchased a mac pro quad core with os x 10.5.8 and record with protools,   it has now got to the point where i can no longer purchase plugins for protools because the operating system is to old i need at least snow leopard ,i have never upgraded and am concerned about losing any previous protools sessions and plugins ,it has been suggested to me to upgrade just one of the hardrives to snow leopard or lion or the latest system and then just open a protools session on the old osx hardrive and save to the new upgraded hardrive , is this possible? or has anyone any suggestions ,many thanks

You should seriously consider establishing a Boot drive, with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files (including Paging/Swap) on it. User files are moved off to another drive.
This makes maintaining the System and maintaining your User files much easier, and it makes your Mac faster in every way.
