Photoshop 10 general guidance on captions/comments

I have been using Photfunstudio for storing phots on my PC.  However I have just bought a new PC (windows 7) and on copying over all my pictures I found I lost all the 'captions' to the photos.  The photofunstudio help line said 'yes that would happen and there's nothing you can do about it'. Well thanks for that!  I now have the fun task of manually copying the captions from the old PC to the new one.  Obviously I dont want to use Photofun studioand have to do this all again in X years when I change PC. So I am now looking for decent software that will
a. Be capable of storing comments/captions for each photo (not ON the photo, but as a comment so I can read where the picture was taken e.g. I can write and store 'Malham gorge from the north')
b. Be capable of being backed up and transferred to another PC without losing the link between the comment and photo.
c. Be capable of importing existing photos into some understandable directory tree format e.g. month/year, so I don't have to reorganise all existing photos again
Thats all I need and want.  Can some kind person inform me if Photoshop 10 would do this (seems a basic task?). Many thanks.

I concur with the other posters:
1. You are asking in the wrong place. While most of us wh odeal wit hInDesign to have to manage photos in some way, you are much better off asking in a forum devoted to photos or photo management, like one of the Photoshop forums.
2. From your description, Photofunstudio is horribly broken (I am not familiar with it). The industry standard method for maintaining captioning information is in the metadata of the photos, be it XMP metadata or IPTC metadata, and that stores the caption data either in the same file as the photo (usually), or in a seperate "sidecar" .xmp file right next to the original file (sometimes). Either way, copying the files copies the metadata. While some systems may store the metadata in an internal database, any reasonable system permits exporting that data to one of the aforementioned formats.
3. Adobe's products that deal with image metadata are Bridge, and Lightroom. They are very different kinds of tools,
so check them both out.

  • Interface builder NSSplitView general guidance

    Hi all,
Just working on an OSX Cocoa Document Based Core Data app. I'm trying to decide how I should be working with IB - i.e. the extent to which I setup the layout in there, as opposed to driving it from XCode.
At a high level the basic screen layout isn't far away from iTunes. At the moment I have two split views - one horizontal with the lower locked down to provide a footer control bar for my app. In the upper half of the split view, I've then added another (this time vertical) split view to provide for the custom outline view I've built on the left and the main event on the right hand side. Not sure why, but it just feels like I'm doing this wrong. For instance, have I just layered another split view over the lower split view (it certainly doesn't seem to be nested) - should I just build a custom view at the bottom to facilitate the bottom toolbar etc? The main event is likely to require a horizontal split and various custom views within it so the main question is...from an IB POV should it just be insanely simple ie a vertical split view in the top 90% of the screen and a single view across the bottom with all of the nitty gritty then populated by work in xcode?
Sorry if this question is inane or garbled - thanks for taking the time to read it. I come from the world of windows and for me the whole Cocoa thing feels like being an 8 yr old in a sweet shop with a pocket full of money.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Any time someone surfaces with questions about 'general guidance' in terms of layouts, especially when they're coming over from a Windows environment, I'm reminded of the right way/right thing method of heuristics.
The bottom line is that this is all centered on the user...not the datasource, not the designer, not the tools, not the OS.
Put the user first and the rest will fall in place. If you haven't done so already, it will be time well spent to review Apple's HIGs.

  • Is photoshop general discussion forum dysfunctional

Does anybody know a reason why the Photoshop General Forum may not be fully functional (since 13 hours ago it seems from the time of the last post)?

    Noel,
Have not been to Photoshop <whatever> yet this AM, but saw similar in the Premiere Pro Forum.
    Some new structure.
Guess that it's time to redo a bunch of bookmarks, or at least learn what to expect.
I believe that this is being done to both simplify the forums' structure, and to provide uniformity among them.

  • Photoshop Elements 5.0 captions

Q1:  How can I copy "captions" to hard drive photo file "properties".  Just copy and paste one-at-a-time?
Q2:  How can I copy photos from Elements to a disc WITH the captions?  Is the only way a slide show?

Thank you very much for helping!  I'm afraid I don't understand something basic which is getting in the way.    When Paige says "select the photo in the Organizer", here's what I have been doing.  I think there are 3 ways I can add a caption, and I haven't seen any difference between them.  One is to right-click and select "Add caption" from the pop-up list.  Another is to double-left-click on the photo to open it and to click on the caption bar to enter info.  The third is to go up to the second bar from the top and select Edit then "Add Caption".   No matter which option I choose, the caption is added.  The problem is that I only seem to be able to see the caption when I am in Elements.  When I try to copy the photo to a disc or paste it into an e-mail, the photo does not carry the caption with it.  I was hoping that it would somehow be saved in the photo file on my hard drive, just like other Photoshop edits are.  In direct answer to your suggestion, I see the File>Write Tags and Properties Info to photo" and click on it, but the Tags and Captions do not appear in the photo file on my hard drive.     My computer has Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and Windows XP Version 2002.  I save photos in Documents and Settings/My Pictures.  From there if I right-click on a photo, the bottom option on a pop-up list is "Properties".  As far as I know this is the only place where information is stored for that image.  It has places called Title, Subject, Keywords, and Comments.  There is no place called "Captions" but I was hoping the caption would somehow be saved there somewhere.  If it is not saved there, where is it saved such that someone will see it if I send it in an e-mail or on a disc?  Perhaps I should just ask what is the proper way to send a photo from Elements to a friend by e-mail and disc so that it includes the caption?  - Op111

  • Captions/comments ON photo - not in "info" windo

Can't find the "how-to" in iPhoto Help or the tutorial. I would like to place captions at center bottom of photo. Or, better yet, as thought balloons above our "goofy" expressions. How do I move the comments onto the photo rather than left in the "info" windo? Thanx, ~Newbie~

Another very good application is Photoshop Elements. If you think you might get into a lot of advanced editing then I suggest PSE as the application to get. I has about 80% of Photoshop's capabilities at 1/7 the price. It even comes bundled with most Canon scanners if your in the market for a scanner.

  • How do I import caption comments from ZoomBrowser into LR?

    Hi There,
I have been using Canon Zoombrowser EX until now, but just got Adobe Lightroom.
I have started importing photos from my hard drive, but noticed that Lightroom is not importing the comments (captions) recorded in Zoombrowser.
How do I get it to do this? Is there a way, or do I manually have to go into every single photo and copy & paste the captions into Lightroom?
    Regards,
    David

    Hi Bill,
I just tried what you suggested, but it didn't work.
It removed the Lightroom Metadata (including keywords) and replaced it with the original metadata, but did not bring out the comments/caption. It must be in there somewhere, but Lightroom can't seem to find it.
    Regards

  • Photoshop & general CS4 funkiness in XP that started a few months ago

This is a multi-part pain in the butt.
Part one: Sporadically, PShop CS4 decides it will not open a file. I can try and open it through the Open Dialog... No Luck. I can go and find the file in XP's file manager and choose "Open With" select Photoshop CS4... No Luck. I can even go into Bridge, find the file and ask Bridge to open the file in Photoshop, and you guessed it... No luck.
I have to physically reboot my computer and even then that solution isn't 100%. It's a pain, but something I've JUST been dealing with. It got on the other side of frustration today when I had two clients over my shoulder and couldn't open their files (or any other files for that matter). So we had to reschedule our meeting and HOPEFULLY I can get this resolved with your help.
The other issue, and this is CS4 wide, the key commands no longer work right. It's not just Photoshop, but all of the programs in CS4. If I choose CTRL + H to hide elements the layer I have active gets deleted. If I click on any tool, for example the Pick Tool I get the Hand tool. I then have to hit the SPACE BAR to activate the chosen tool.
Again, this is systemic [at least] across CS4 Ilustrator, InDesign, Photoshop (the main set of tools I use).
Please help. It's becoming a major buzzkill!
    Thanks.
    Mark

    What version of XP?
64 bit? PS CS4 is not supported on XP 64 bit and has acted weird on a lot of systems in past postings.
    32 bit? XP SP3, correct?
Since things are acting weird I would back up all your needed files.
First thing to do is, or what I do is, run the command sfc /scannow.exe in a elevated command prompt. This is a system file checker and it will verify system files are correct and not damaged.
    Also try MicroSoft Fix it.

Also look in Windows XP Event Manager to see if any hits are listed. Post the results here if you find any.

  • Raw to Photoshop general use querry

    Hi,
I'm quite new to Aperture and I'm discovering it.
As far as i understand well, Aperture can help editing a picture in photoshop by creating a duplicate (the format being user defined in the option-right?) and then dealing with it.
    (Right?)
Also, you can work directly in Aperture to work with RAW and other editing.
I was wondering, what about if I want to use PS CS3 to edit my raw pictures, while still using Aperture to sort and keep them?
-Should I adjust the raw first in Aperture then deal with the photoshop editing in a 2nd part?
-Can I use the raw directly from Aperture, using something similar to the "Go to original" option available in iPhoto (where in my case my originals where RAW)?
Thanks if anyone can light me a bit on this subject!

    1. Does Aperture create a "tiff" file and send it to Bridge when you click "open in Bridge"?. Does Bridge open and show the "tiff" file? None of this will work if you send the file to Bridge as a "psd" file.
2.. If Bridge opens and shows the file, do you get a pop-up menu when you "rt. click" (command click) on the image.
    3. Does the pop-up menu have a line down the list a bit that reads "open in camera raw"?
    4. Click on that line. What happens?
    5. You cannot just click "open" from the drop-down menu from the menu bar, or use "command-O" or "double click" to open the file. You must use the pop-up menu that appears when you (command-click) or (RT-click) the image.
If none of this works let me know and we'll try again.

  • Jive mobile  - url for photoshop general discussion

IPhone has an app jive that i could hopefully use to access this very forum from my mobile devices if i can learn what the URL is for this forum.
Anyone have suggestion what is link i am suppose to use to set this app for use of photoshop forum

I happened to have a web view still open in Safari on my retired iPhone 3G and it refreshed into the Jive Mobile view upon establishing a connection to wifi...
The Photoshop Windows forum took a loooong time to come up, and interacting with the thing remained very slow.  Unusably slow.  It even takes a large fraction of a second to scroll the screen, or to turn if one turns the iPhone sideways, and at least 10 seconds to display a thread one clicks on.  Jive surely does make some inefficient software!
Other than that threads seem readable enough, but I agree - it sure would be nice to force it to a normal desktop view.  At least that's interactive!

  • Precise Placement of text and Browser variation - General Guidance

I want to be able to put text on a web site so that the text forms the silhouette of an object.  This is a rough example - it' s the first thing I could think of.  You can see I'm a Creative!
               A
             horse
          is a friend for life
and if you treat it well
it will serve you and be a constant
companion to you.  These letters and
words are put together in the shape
of a horses head.  It's quite straight
    forward isn't
    it.  This does
    not really look
    like a horse.
I would like some ideas to help me achieve this.  My first thought was to make the shapes into image files but that would not be ideal because of accessibility and SEO objectives.  Also, I would like the web-site owner to be able to be able to upload content.  The main problem I can see is if viewers change the text size in the browser.  Because of the need for someone else to add the content, I will need to use an off the peg CMS and would probably opt for Wordpress.
Any advice to help me plan this out and discuss it with the site owner would be really apprecieated.
    Many thanks
    Martin
PS I knw this isn't strictly a DW question but this is really the only place I come for help with web building stuff.  If anyone can recommend a good forum for these kind of design/creative/general questions that has a good sense of community, I'd love to hear of it.

A solution would be to provide pre made image outlines that they could load into 'paint' if they are using windows (mac also has a similar, but better program), then they could use these as a starting point.
No matter what you do, the client  will eventually do something to break the design, (normally 2-6 weeks, in my experience), if they are creating images, etc that you cannot control in some way.
At least you can (or should), be able to re-size any images they upload to the server if you are using/building a cms.

  • Rendering High Quality 3D image with Unlit Texture in Photoshop General Discussion

I have a graphical texture wrapped around a 3D cylindrical shape. Think "Coke bottle". When I select "unlit texture" in the properties panel, the image render is low quality.
See this link for a similar issue.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5093470
As the openGL render was good enough for the person posting the question, I'd like to retain quality from my texture to the final render.
    I'm using PS CS6.
    Thanks in advance.

The long and short version is: Use a 3D program. Blender is free, after all.
1- How can i play with the dimensions of the 3d box with numbers, such as pixel or cm ?
You can't. All units in PS are relativeand normalized to the scene.
2- How can i create 3d box and add different textures to different part of the box? I found CUBE MESH PRESET in the forums but no download link, EVEN IN THE DISCCUSION itself
That's what 3D-programs and UV layout tools are for. Creating an unfolded cube UV set is a 10 second thing. Here's one: http://www.mylenium.de/_temp/uv_box.zip.
Where i can modify the render quality or such a thing if it exists?
Select the Scene root to change the render mode and quality and also check the 3D section in the prefs.

  • Comments, Captions, Notes & Descriptions

I am confused regarding how to best utilize the several descriptive capabilites that exist for images.
My primary interest is creating a historical collection of family photos and a facile ability for family members to see and interact with these images/history.  Increasingly, we are realizing that it is the narratives, stories and other bits of information that make the collection compelling for the many dozens (hundreds) of intended users.   These bits of information are currently contained in the tags, captions, comments we have been using.  In 50 - 75 % of the cases... tags would be suffieient if they would only show!
In general... there appears to be minnimal ways of making this information viewable..either online or in printed format... at least I have not found the means.  I need a thorough understanding of options for showing comments (from photoshop.com), notes and captions.... and for that matter tags.
Family members have been using comments to dialogue about images... identifying who, where, when but also frequently giving stories and narratives that are as valuable as the pictures.  Is there any way to get these comments into the pictures meta data... into notes .. or even into captions(not preferred because of length).  I believe that comments are attached to images (because I see comments show up in multiple albums).  As we near completion of the research/tagging phase of our family project... I want to delete the current working albums (which are not useful for viewing) but I desperately need to keep comments..  In general.. I don't really know how comments work in relationship to catalog in PSE 9... and whether there is any way for comments to be viewed/included in PSE itself.
Your insights, experience and advice will be sincerely appreciated,
    GeneMark

Hello All... I have just caught up on all your responses... I truly appreciate both your efforts and your insights.
It occurs to me after ready your insights to provide a bit of explanation of my "use case"... in light of your various responses.
The photos and slides that were scanned are not tightly contained to a specific topic and the originals come from many different containers/boxes/etc... from different physical locations. I have used folder and file names as a means of tracing back to the originals... many of which have writing on them which is often quite valuable.
I am completely relying on tags as the means for organizing the image collection for viewing.  I have enlisted the assistance of cousins.siblings, nephews, nieces, etc to help identify the who, where, when of the images.  We are located across the country (and in my case at the moment in Europe). So utilizing photoshop.com was /is a necessary and good solution.
So I have the entire PSE catalog synched with/between photoshop.com.
I am comfortable with a few of my family co-conspirators entering tags directly but for the most part I am sending albums to be viewed and commented on. The tag hiearchy is critical to having the dynamic capability desired when the process is completed and doing the tagging correctly is the single most important part of the project! One of my greatest disappointments is that tags are not visible in any form when I send out these albums for review.  The process I am using is iterative... I and a few others do enough tagging to be able to create "review Albums" that we send from PSE as photoshop.com albums for review & comment to those who know the family/event/or whatever. Fortunately, captions can be viewable in a couple of the album options.  I have family members enter comments as they clarify the who/when/where/event information... frequently two or three individuals reviewing/commenting on the same image which turns out to be very valuable.  As many of thes images go back to 1910's, 1920's... some even 1900's.. we are in fact recording family history/stories...  that are going far beyond just identification of the picture.  Then, I go thru , read the comments and do the tagging and enter captions... usually in photoshop.com because the comments are only visible there. The trade-off I am constantly faced with is to keep captions short enough to be useful vs not loosing the important information contained in the comments.
Ideally... I would like to write the comments to the images metadata.. but I do not believe this is possible.  next... I would prefer in many cases to record the comments in Notes... but I do not believe I can update notes from photoshop.com.
I could update notes from PSE... but comments are not visible.
Could someone please confirm for me that as long as I am synching the entire catalog I am not in danger of loosing comments... even if I delete the album that someone was reviewing when they entered the comment in PS.com. I am assuming that comments are pointed to the specific file name and will show when ever that filename is included in an album.
Sooo, your comments were all helpful and certainly were in the area of my confusion/need.
    1. Is there any possible way to make tags viewable when albums are viewed?
    2. Any strategy for converting comments to notes so I can store as metadata... ideally an automated process.
    3. or any strategy for making comments viewable from within PSE.
    Thanks all
    GeneMark
If I put all the comments in captions from within photoshop.com.... they will be unusable for many viewing scenarios.
If tags were visible... it would save about 75% of the work... as we are already identifying the who, where, when, what as tags... but as they are not visible... everything is duplicated usually twice... once as comments and again as captions.
I hope this explanation clarifies my delima.
