PKGBUILDs: Compiz-0.9 (compiz++)

Compiz 0.9 is the first release of compiz after the C++ rewrite, so don't expect it to be very stable.
Since this is a development release, don't expect it to be in [extra].
Here are PKGBUILDs for compiz-0.9 that don't affect you current installation.
compiz-core-09
compiz-plugins-main-09
compiz-plugins-extra-09
compiz-plugins-unsupported-09
libcompizconfig-09
compizconfig-python-09
ccsm-09
Configure compiz using ccsm-09 (a wrapper script for ccsm)
Run compiz using 'compiz-09 --replace ccp'
Start a decorator with '(gtk/kde4)-window-decorator-09 --replace'
If you have a problem, try running 'compiz-09 --replace move decor composite resize place opengl'
Ask about any bugs or regressions on #compiz-dev on irc.freenode.net
Here are compiz-git PKGBUILDs. For the running compiz, ccsm, and the window decorators, add a -git suffix to the command. (eg. compiz-git --replace ccp)
compiz-core++
compiz-plugins-main++
compiz-plugins-extra++
compiz-plugins-unsupported++
libcompizconfig++
compizconfig-python++
ccsm++
NOTE: Emerald has been discontinued since compiz 0.5 so I am no longer packaging it.

  • [done] Alternative to compiz (unusual "tiling compiz" setup)

    Compiz isn't doing so well...hasn't been for a while... and I wonder what I'm going to do when it will get too hard to keep working on my machine... guess my way of working with compiz is rather far away from the standard... is there another window manager around that can be set up to work (almost) like what I'm used to?
    Most important feature for me include but are not limited to:
    - The grid plugin. I mostly use compiz as a tiling window manager, without window decorations. The easy & fast "num pad / 3 available sizes toggle, 9 center points" is ideal for me.
    - Desktop Plane / Expo on a mouse button: I use this to drag windows around. Also to drag them to the desktop I want them on. Also to get a quick overview of what's happening on the other desktops... like keeping an eye on resync while I watch a video fullscreen.
    - Fish Eye / Magnifier / mousewheel on top screen edge: If have this set up to work with screen edge instead of keyboard keys, because usually when I need it I don't have my keyboard with me. I tend to walk around with my mouse a lot and that's when I want quick & easy access to the magnifier / fish eye.
    - Setting rules for windows. Mostly for window decorations: I only want those on "temporary / floating / popup" sort of windows... the rest is tiled neatly anyway.
    - Scale plugin on a mouse button. So I can easily switch between windows that are on different desktops. Also as I don't have window decoration for most programs, I use it to close programs.
    - widget layer: I like conky. And I like a panel (when I don't have my keyboard with me). Just don't want to see it always.
    So... if you use a (sort of) similar setup / "workflow" but another window manager - let me know which one please, thanks!

    DE Base... like: compiz + xfce4session + a little bit of lxde = does everything I want. Has been great for years... just it's starting to look like it won't be working much longer. Compiz is hardest to replace I guess, the rest that's missin whould be easy once I found something that has the freatures described above.
    Hard to describe that fish-eye-thing better than in the first post... hmm....  if I have some sort of fish eye where I can bind the mouse wheel at screen edges to zoom in + zoom out... then I can... more easily do anything I can do without a keyboard from afar? Read, click buttons, change desktop, drag files into windows... with a quick mousewheel stroke that zooms into "fisheye mode" it's a lot easier than with a normal magnifier to do things from afar, especially with a smooth / pseydo-steppless zoom. Haven't looked at gnome + kde for too long, but what I saw available there looked like just a normal magnifier which has to be started and then it's always open with a square "window".
    Also there I saw no way to specify which windows are supposed to have decorations and which ones not.
    ( And I don't have to tile windows without a keyboard, because I only very rarely need new ones - everything stays open and I can easily switch around with scale or expo plugin.)

  • Cube atlantis compiz plugin with compiz 0.9?

    Hi all,
    Does anyone know if/how the cube atlantis plugin (the one that gives you fish swimming around in the desktop cube) can be used with the 0.9 version of compiz? I know it's available in the AUR for the 0.8 release version of compiz, but I get various other problems when using the old compiz. I'm currently using compiz-manjaro from the AUR which is excellent, however the empty desktop cube is making me sad...

    cqz wrote:
    Well after some searching I found that the latest version of the atlantis plugin is 0.9.5.0, and can be found at git://anongit.compiz.org/compiz/plugins/atlantis. Unfortunately compiling it failed, it seems incompatable with the compiz versions in the AUR. However by looking at the output:
    /usr/include/compiz/cube/cube.h:132:46: note: candidate expects 5 arguments, 4 provided
    WRAPABLE_HND (4, CubeScreenInterface, void, cubePaintInside,
    I looked for where it expected an extra argument, and added an empty variable in just to see what would happen . And it *sort of* worked!
    It now compiles successfully, and actually displays the water with waves, no fishes though (worth a try).
    I may attempt to fix this despite having no C++ experience (don't hold your breath lol), so if any code wizards out there could give this an eyeball and speculate how difficult it would be to make this work I'd appreciate it!
    I'm pretty sure this package worked for me. It builds a few plugins including the atlantis plugin if I remember rightly.

    If it works, I believe you can add 'gtk-window-decorator' in the settings of the decorator plugin using compiz-settings, and then it will be started automatically.

  • Kde-window-decorator in compiz

    Hi,
    Where is the package for kde-window-decorator?
    The wiki just says to type it into ccsm: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … Decoration
    Ive tried installing compiz, the kde deps, rebuilding compiz after deps were installed, tried to locate kde-window-decorator using pkgfile, and looked at the pkgbuild/build options for compiz. It's almost as if this is not an option, as there is a total lack of documentation on kde-window-decorator.
    Am I totally missing something obvious or does this binary not exist?

    From the wiki: "The GTK Window Decorator and the KDE Window Decorator are included in the Compiz source and can be optionally compiled whilst building Compiz. Emerald, on the other hand, is a separate, standalone decorator."
    You didn't say which package you were using. But for compiz or compiz-bzr change:
    -DBUILD_KDE4=Off \
    to
    -DBUILD_KDE4=On \
    Then rebuild. Then you can specify the command in the decoration plugin as per the wiki. It's not documentated because it goes pretty much unused these days. After all, it relys on Kwin (provided by kdebase-workspace, not the Kwin for Plasma 5) and as Kwin has all of the effects Compiz has, why bother with Compiz?

  • [Request] Compiz-bzr from Launchpad

    I've been using compiz-git from the AUR, but recently Sam Spilsbury has said that he will henceforth only use launchpad for Compiz development and that the launchpad branch is already more updated than the git branch.
    But I know nothing about bzr.
    If I do
    bzr checkout lp:compiz
    I get a bunch of files, but I don't know how to build it after that! There are no makefiles...

    I can give you a *rough* very manual howto for compiz from bzr, but i don't half time to really maintain pkgbuilds for compiz-bzr, but i have built compiz 0.9.7 recently.
    You basically have a few bzr branches your going to have to check out;
    Compiz-core  (this is the master branch in bzr)
    bzr branch lp:compiz-core
    Compiz-plugins-main
    bzr branch lp:compiz-plugins-main
    Compiz-plugins-extra
    bzr branch lp:compiz-plugins-extra
    Compiz-libcompizconfig
    bzr branch lp:compiz-libcompizconfig
    Compiz-libcompizconfig-python
    bzr branch lp:compiz-compizconfig-python
    Compiz-ccsm
    bzr branch lp:compiz-ccsm
    ...and i think that is it.
    You build each component (roughly in the above order). simply cd into the directory and;
    mkdir build
    cd build
    cmake .. (installs to /usr/local) or cmake .. -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr (or whatever prefix you like)
    make
    sudo make install
    NOTE: 2 exceptions to this are Compiz-ccsm && Compiz-libcompizconfig-python ~ this is because they both use python in the build process, and therefore need to be told to use python2 rather than python (which is obviously python3 in Arch).
    in both cases, you just just edit the CMakeLists.txt included *before* running 'cmake ..' from within the build directory
    The original will look something like this;
    add_custom_target (python ALL
    COMMAND python setup.py build
    WORKING_DIRECTORY ${CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR}
    COMMENT "Generating Python Bytecode")
    But for Archlinux, it should read;
    add_custom_target (python ALL
    COMMAND python2 setup.py build
    WORKING_DIRECTORY ${CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR}
    COMMENT "Generating Python Bytecode")
    Note: You could use the sed command in your package build
    I hope this helps
    Oh, and i would actually go to lp:compiz-core and take a look around, i know Sam had been changing some stuff around. ie: not too long ago, the majority of plugins each had their own bzr branch, but now that GIT isn't being used they were merged into 'main' and 'extra' plugins. However, the last time i built compiz (like a week ago, 0.9.7 - this method worked fine).

  • Metacity/compiz, can't figure out what to do.

    Sooo, I just installed arch linux again to play around, starting at a fresh install I installed an xserver and got it running right, then I started installing some WMs and installed lightdm and lightdm-gtk3-greeter.
    So far so good, when I do try to login all WMs show up except metacity/compiz, that's not really a problem so I decide to add the entries manually
    both are in /usr/share/xsessions
    [Desktop Entry]
    Version=1.0
    Encoding=UTF-8
    Name=metacity
    Name[en_US]=metacity
    Terminal=false
    Exec=metacity
    TryExec=metacity
    Name[en_US.UTF-8]=metacity
    Type=Application
    [Window Manager]
    SessionManaged=true
    and
    [Desktop Entry]
    Version=1.0
    Encoding=UTF-8
    Name=Compiz
    Name[en_US]=Compiz
    Terminal=false
    Exec=compiz ccp
    TryExec=compiz ccp
    Name[en_US.UTF-8]=compiz
    Type=Application
    [Window Manager]
    SessionManaged=true
    From what I can tell the entries are right, they don't throw any errors and I get to a desktop and I have a cursor (no menus of any type though)
    The issue is that I have no clue how to proceed, I configured compiz with ccsm but can't figure out how to add menus, my goal is to make it look like GNOME2 without all the bloat (all I should need is metacity and compiz, true?), another thing I want is a fancy floaty dock and conky, conky is installed and I'll configure it once my desktop looks decent, the dock I chose is cairo-dock because it looks nice (does it auto-hide? Auto hiding is absolutely critical.)
    Anyway, I did my research, I read the compiz-article on the wiki (I installed 0.9.x if it matters) but I do not know how to get the config running, the syntax for .xinitrc is rather different from a .desktop file, Google didn't help nor did the forums search function.
    Did I mention what I want it to look like? I don't think so... anyway, I want it to look like gnome2 with the applications menu and places menu (have a look at debian 6.x if you don't know what it looks like) but I am rather lost ^^;
    Sorry for being so uneducated, I hope I don't cause someone too much pain with my silly questions.

    Chazza wrote:The .xinitrc file is only useful if you are using startx. It is not going to make any difference to how you start sessions from lightdm. Quite frankly though, why not use .xinitrc and startx? It's by far the easiest way to autostart programs with a session. Compiz was not designed to be used as a standalone window manager and, as such, does not have an autostart utility of its own. Like I said earlier, you can put all the startup commands for the programs you want to autostart in your .xinitrc file and start the session with startx. No xsession files are required for that, of course. If you must use a Display Manager you may be able to parse startup commands through it using an xprofile file. There is a little information on that here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xprofile. As for your Metacity xsession file, I have no idea why you wrote that. There is no need for it. As has been pointed out earlier, Metacity is a window manager completely seperate from Compiz which is also a window manager. Metacity cannot be used alongside Compiz and is not required by Compiz itself in any way.
    Obviously, I thought you'd realize I knew that .xinitrc wasn't relevant since I added the "I thought it was only used when startx is called or am I mistaken?" but I digress; I'm not sure why you keep questioning my motives though, if I want to use lightdm then I don't want to use startx, whatever my reasons may be are rather irrelevant.
    Anyway, thanks for the link, at least it gives me something to work with (I'm sure I can figure out the syntax based on the xfce4 file)
    Oh and I know compiz wasn't designed to be used standalone but I am not going to be stopped by that, for the metacity xsession file I wrote that as a test. If I recall GNOME2 uses metacity as the window manager and compiz as the compositor (which I know is a working setup, however it was merely a test), so yes. They can be used alongside each other since compiz has a quite capable compositor.
    Chazza wrote:Ok. Fine. But you said you were after the educational experience so I was trying to suggest WM's that would be more suitable for a standalone session.
    Well yes, they may be a tad more user friendly but I have a similar philosophy with system building as playing games; Always play on the hardest difficulty.
    Chazza wrote:Why are you talking about gtk themes? They are not relevant. They are for desktop applications, they are not for window managers. When you are talking about a window manager theme you are talking about what the window border looks like and nothing else besides. What you need to understand about Compiz is that it is a window manager that does not come with its own decorator (the decorator being the progam that provides windows with borders.) As such, there are three decorators that can be used with Compiz: compiz-decorator-gtk, kde-window-decorator and emerald. The first is dependent on Metacity and uses Metacity themes. It is what is installed with the compiz-dev and compiz-bzr packages (I assume you installed Compiz with one of these packages as you said you were using the 0.9 version.) The second is dependent on Kwin and uses Kwin themes. The third is not dependent on any window manager and has its own themes. Why is there a setup like this? Because it was expected that you would use Compiz with either GNOME or KDE so it made sense to have decorators that could use the themes already available for the desktop environment's native window manager.
    Ah, a keen observation there! But if you would've paid attention I was also talking about compiz themes, you see the compiz theme I use also comes with a matching GTK theme, the GTK theme looks silly without the compiz theme and the compiz theme looks silly with other gtk themes. (that I have tried).
    Further I am aware that compiz uses three different decorators (based on choice), my theme has an emerald theme and a metacity theme included, I can pick either (isn't it nice?) and indeed I am using the compiz-dev package.
    Chazza wrote:Compiz is not a window decorator, it is a window manager, just like Metacity or Kwin or Xfwm or Mutter or Openbox etc etc. As I said above, the difference is that Metacity, Xfwm, Kwin etc all come with their own native window decorators. Compiz does not. Compiz has some decorators that can utilise the themes of aformentioned window managers.
    ah yes, I started rambling towards the end it seems, I didn't mean window decorator I meant compositor, sorry about that.

    Downloaded latest update 7-27 and all I can say is it is the most pitiful piece of feces I have ever seen. Letters are blue with black background and you can't read **** because of the contrast . What was wrong with the white letters and black background, nothing except some idiot has to justify his miserable existence by making changes on a system that was just fine. Contacts are another issue now that it takes anywhere from 3 to 5 steps to get there. Unlocking the phone is another one , why should I have to unlock it just to have another screen to ask me where to go. I have been on the phone with Verizon as well as going to the store for help in deciphering this new pitiful update. The answers from the help at the stores is to email Google or Verizon about these issues .I purchased the original droid in dec. of 2009 and was happy with it. then upgraded to the razr jan 2012 and have been pleased with it till this latest update and now If I could get anything else  I would, another thing is I would NOT recommend the droid to anyone for purchase.I have even tought about getting the iphone at this point because I am so dissatisfied . when I decided to post this I tried the user name of irked , it was taken as well as ******, so apparently I'm not the only disgusted user.

  • Really interesting bug with Compiz, not sure how to label it

    Hi forums, I really promise I searched around for this, so if this is a super common bug, I apologize in advance (I really wasn't sure how to even label what was happening). All I know is that when compiz is enabled, I'm getting super weird behavior in programs, mostly with terminal and system menus. The only way I know to show this is by a screenshot:
    http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h248/ … 0c7d62.png
    As you can see from the pic, there are multiple menu objects highlighted (I promise I don't have 3 mouse pointers!). I couldn't capture this via screenshot, but the highlighted elements are actually alternating between this set and another. I could show more instances of this, but I think it would just be redundant. Another (possibly related) issue is the odd behavior in terminal. When I am using terminal to do something, be it accessing the AUR repository or editing a file somewhere, or anything really, the terminal scrolls up and down exactly 1 line, repeatedly (very fast). The only other place I experience significant issues is with compizconfig settings manager (ccsm). When trying to access a different menu, the ccsm window flashes very quickly back and forth to the previous menu screen. All of these things make it incredibly difficult to make selections. My browser (chrome) is fortunately exempt from this dilemma.
    The only thing I know for sure is that this is caused by compiz. Disabling compiz (going back to xfwm or using another window manager) eliminates the issue. I hadn't had this issue until yesterday, but I really hadn't changed anything.
    Things I've tried:
    - Reinstalling compiz
    - Enabling/Disabling Emerald
    - Installing compiz-bzr
    - Fooling with metacity
    - Restarting
    Any advice or words of wisdom on this would be very appreciated

    Thanks for the reply. I'm actually using a slightly older nvidia gpu (480 GTX) with nvida-340xx, which is what nvidia recommends. I've worked with changing video driver parameters, and nothing there has seemed to change this much. I was afraid this was being caused by a mistake of mine, but it seems more and more likely that this is a problem with compiz: to test, I made a virtual machine and installed arch there (same setup as mine, only completely fresh) and I'm having the same issues. I like compiz because of the amazing ability to theme and control the general appearance of my gui. Is there a good alternative that one of you all could recommend?

  • Compiz or compiz-fusion on intel

    I tried to run compiz from [community] then compiz-fusion from [compiz-fusion] on Intel video card, but failed.
    Beryl works correctly, but compiz wants texture from pixmap.
    I have AIGLX and Composize correctly configured.
    Can you run compiz on intel?

    OK, it works, thanks, but how to automate it?
    This is my current .xinitrc:
    export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1
    gtk-window-decorator &
    compiz ccp &
    #unset LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT
    exec xfce4-session
    as you can see "unset" is commented out, without it it doesn't work.
    I also can't use LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT in the same line, because it doesn't work this way in .xinitrc.
    When I use such solution - each other application starts in indirect mode (i.e. without acceleration).
    Solutions:
    1) start compiz manually - unacceptable
    2) use my .xinitrc - problem with new OpenGL applications (I need to unset LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT somewhere else)
    3) ???

  • [closed] Compiz not holding shortcut key designation

    Hi, I installed compiz as standalone and followed directions for compiz-deskmenu then compiz-boxmenu, I also generated menu items using AUR menumaker for compiz. I couldn't get the exact setup working. In compiz when I set <Control>space om "General>Commands>Commandline 0 the Command0 in commands changes <Control>space to <primary>space, I thought maybe just "implemetation no big deal" where the problem starts is that when I close ccsm the reference to <Primary> dissappears and only "space " stays effectively killing my space bar. So I changed it to <Super>z, now I get a menu but not when I middle click mouse but only when I scroll forward, so I had to disable "move prev" mouse binding that was for "view port switcher  move Prev". I do not mind this but why would the <Primary>space (which should be <Control>space change to just "space"? Also last strange bit is that for my saved shortcuts they only work when compiz database is flat file and not Gconf.
    I appreciate any enlightement you may impart,
    thanks again

  • Compiz writes Primary modifier instead of Control

    Hello. I am new in Arch. Recently I made a choise of using Compiz as a window manager and AWN as dock/system panel.
    Everything works quiet well, but I can't get my favorite keybindings to work.
    I want to set a command to ctrl+shift+r combination, but when I use “Grab Key Combination” or simply choose ctrl modifier on the key binding screen it turns to <Primary> modifier
    If I agree to set such combination, it saves it at first , but when I leave commands window and return it removes <Primary> modifier .
    I wasn't able to find any solution in google, only that Ctrl is primary modifier in Emacs, but I wasn't replacing my keybindings with Emacs one's.
    I have tried writing <Control> modifier manually and <Ctrl> too, but they were removed on next launch of ccsm.
    I have tried removing compiz with all its dependensies and removing ~/.compiz and ~/.config/compiz from my home directory and installing it agian. The problems remains, so I guess it may be somewhere else.
    Default compiz key bindings with Ctrl, such as Ctrl+Alt+Left to move within the Desktop Wall, are working for me. But I don't want to change the shortcut software, because in this case I may end up unable to modify these default key bindings.
    I have default key bindings with Ctrl working, such as Ctrl+C Ctrl+V Ctrl+A Ctrl+S. All the other modifiers are working well. For example, if I leave compiz settings with the example above, Shift+r will run my application.
    I am sorry, I don't know which configuration files I must provide. I will include my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf file, because it contains some keyboard options http://paste.pocoo.org/show/496413/ . If something else is needed, please tell me.

    I have the same issue - everywhere Ctrl key works as expected (desktop apps, correct output in xev), but ccsm replaces <Ctrl> with <Primary> while grabbing keys.
    Running from terminal and pressing twice <Ctrl> visual button gives and error in console
    Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/ccm/Settings.py", line 1025, in HandleModifierRemoved
    label.set_text (self.GetLabelText (new))
    UnboundLocalError: local variable 'new' referenced before assignment
    So I think this is bug only in ccsm. Version I'm using is 0.8.4. So it's quite old, but most propabably I'll keep it, because I'm too lazy to update .
    If this happens in version higher than the one I'm using - feel free to file a bug to the compiz team.
    But I've discovered workaround that works for me:
    Close ccsm
    Open ${XDG_CONFIG_HOME}/compiz/compizconfig/Default.ini and edit [commands] section manually
    Login/logout could be required, not sure
    Open ccsm, and shortcuts are working as expected
    Example of my config
    [commands]
    as_command0 = gnome-terminal
    as_run_command0_key = <Control><Alt>t
    as_command1 = slimlock
    as_run_command1_key = <Control><Alt>l

  • Compiz can't find manageable screens

    Running "compiz" or "compiz --replace" fails with the following error:
    compiz (core) - Error: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
    compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
    Fusion-icon says there is "No GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap with direct rendering context". I try with "LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1" and still there are no screens found by compiz. Starting compiz from xinitrc also fails.
    The driver in use is the open source one, also, I have no xorg.conf. There is direct rendering.
    The solutions in the wiki for the GLX_EXT problem didn't help.
    Do you have any ideas how to get compiz running?
    (And a small question. If I have no xorg.conf, how do I select a different driver (fglrx)?)
    Thanks for reading.

    Make sure "fglrx" does not exist in your Modules line (or any other config file that you may have put it in: rc.conf, etc)

    Where exactly did you guys get compiz 0.8?
    Even with forcing my mirror to sync it shows:
    [kurt@arch ~]$ pacman -Ss compiz-core
    community/compiz-core 0.7.8-1 (compiz compiz-kde compiz-gtk compiz-fusion)
    Composite manager for Aiglx and Xgl
    So now when i go to do a pacman -Syu I get:
    [kurt@arch ~]$ sudo pacman -Syyu

    error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: libcompizconfig: requires compiz-core>=0.8.0
    It also appears my mirror is synced up to date.  If I search for dssi which the website says is the newest package it shows the newest version:
    [kurt@arch ~]$ pacman -Ss dssi
    testing/dssi 1.0.0-1
    DSSI is an API for audio plugins, with particular application for software
    synthesis plugins with native user interfaces.
    Any ideas?
