PL/SQL-Function or Procedure

Hi!
I need to create a PL/SQL-Function or procedure that checks the database (10g) for (all) connections for a flight route. The function or procedure should be designed to get the outbound and return flights and store the information in a new table (maybe temporary table). Or course, there are several flights for a given route, depending on date and price. But let's use this sample data for now:
Flight_availability
conn_id      carrier_id      flight_no     origin     departure     destination     arrival     flight_date
1     BA     235     LHR     07:10     JFK     9:00     20-Jul-07
2     UA     712     JFK     12:00     LAX     18:00     20-Jul-07
3     UA     710     LAX     08:00     JFK     14:00     08-AUG-07
4     BA     237     JFK     16:30     LHR     06:30     09-AUG-07
Flight_route
route_id      route_description
1     London-Heathrow (LHR) to Los Angeles (LAX)
2     Los Angeles (LAX) to London-Heathrow
Flight_segment
route_id      segment_id      conn_id
1     1     1
1     2     2
2     1     3
2     2     4
Would appreciate any help! Sorry for the formatting!
Thank you!

From the information you've given, the most we can do is to join the details together.

SQL>So what are your requirements exactly? What do you mean by "check" the datatbase for all connections for a flight route. i.e. what is the process of "checking" and what are the results of that "check"? What information needs storing in the new or temporary table?
You need to expand on your explanation of requirements a little more.

    I need a suggestion in publishing a Pl SQL Function or Procedure as a webservice:
    I want to return a SQL Resultset. What would be e prefered way:
    using sys_refcursor or plsql array as return parameter?
    What are the advantages and disadvantages?
    Thank you in advice!

    Hi Frank,
    thank you for the quick response.
    The publishing woorks fine. I've created a function which return a sys_refcursor.
    But when do the cursor get closed, how to handle that?
    To avoid the problem with closing cursor, would it be better to deal with pl sql arrays as return types?
    Thank you!

  • Calling Oracle Functions and Procedures in Java

    I've looked online for a blurb on using Oracle SQL functions and
    procedures in Java, but I haven't found anything. Can someone
    either give me a quick crash course on this, or point me to the
    best source of information for this?

    From the SQLJ FAQ.
    http://otn.oracle.com/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/faq.html#sqljplsql
    Within your SQLJ statements, you can use PL/SQL anonymous blocks
    and call PL/SQL stored procedures and stored functions, as in the
    following examples: Anonymous
    block:
    #sql {
    DECLARE
    n NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    n := 1;
    WHILE n <= 100 LOOP
    INSERT INTO emp (empno) VALUES(2000 +
    n);
    n := n + 1;
    END LOOP;
    END
    Stored procedure call (returns the maximum
    deadline as an output parameter into an output host expression):
    #sql { CALL MAX_DEADLINE(:out maxDeadline) };
    Stored function call (returns the maximum
    deadline as a function return into a result expression):
    #sql maxDeadline = { VALUES(GET_MAX_DEADLINE)
    Of course, you can also use JDBC code to achieve the same - the
    standard JDBC escape sequences for stored function and procedure
    calls are supported, using for example:
    "{? = CALL GET_MAX_DEADLINE}"
    or:
    "{call MAX_DEADLINE(?)}"
    and for the rest of the details, get that JDBC crash course...

  • Calling pl/sql function from JSP to get data

    Hi,
    Ideally I want to pass the results of a PL/SQL function or procedure to my JSP page as a resultset or an array.
    I've manage to pass all the data as a string like this:
    // this works for a function that returns a string
    String str;
         CallableStatement cstmt = conn.prepareCall("begin ?:= temp_package.pass_string(); end;");
         cstmt.registerOutParameter(1,Types.VARCHAR);
         cstmt.execute();
         str = cstmt.getString(1);
    but if I try to pass a collection or Varray or Ref Cursor like this:
    // LETS TRY A PROCEDURE THAT ALTERS THE CONTENTS OF AN ARRAY
         CallableStatement cstmt = conn.prepareCall(" begin ?:= temp_package.pass_varray(); end;");
         cstmt.registerOutParameter(1,Types.ARRAY);
         cstmt.execute();
    or this:
    CallableStatement cstmt = conn.prepareCall(" begin ?:= temp_package.pass_cursor(); end;");
         cstmt.registerOutParameter(1,Types.CURSOR);
         cstmt.execute();
    or this:
    CallableStatement cstmt = conn.prepareCall(" begin ?:= temp_package.pass_cursor(); end;");
         cstmt.registerOutParameter(1,OracleTypes.CURSOR);
         cstmt.execute();
    I get an error saying that the type cant be translated or something similar. It seems happy with VARCHAR but not with ARRAY,VARRAY or CURSOR.
    Can anyone help please as this has driven me crazy for hours surfing google and various forums. Thanks.

    Ok, I made the changes, but I'm now getting the following error:
    Error code = 1403
    Error message = ORA-01403: no data found
    ORA-06512: at "IOBOARD.GETSTATUS", line 6
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    The ora-01403 I don't understand because there is data for the name Kelly.Brace.
    ora-06512 error: at string line string.
    Here's what the code looks like after I made the changes:
    String sql = "{?=call ioboard.GetStatus(?)}";
          // create a Statement object
          myStatement = myConnection.prepareCall( sql );
          myStatement.setString( 1, "Kelly.Brace" );
          myStatement.registerOutParameter(2, java.sql.Types.LONGVARCHAR );
          // create a ResultSet object, and populate it with the
          // result of a SELECT statement
          ResultSet myResultSet = myStatement.executeQuery();
          // retrieve the row from the ResultSet using the
          // next() method
          myResultSet.next();
          // retrieve the user from the row in the ResultSet using the
          // getString() method
          String status = myResultSet.getString(1);
          System.out.println("Hello Kelly, your status is: " + status);
          // close this ResultSet object using the close() method
          myResultSet.close();Here's what the function looks like:
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION GetStatus( user_name in varchar2)
    RETURN VARCHAR2
    is
    v_status varchar2(10);
    BEGIN
    select iob_location into v_status
    from ioboard.iob_user
    where iob_username = user_name;
      RETURN( v_status);
    END;This works perfectly in the SQL Window:
    select iob_location
    from ioboard.iob_user
    where iob_username = 'Kelly.Brace';

  • Need to pass value from check box to the pl/sql function in process

    My requirement is to use single value check box and pass the flag value to the pl/sql function.
    The function need to interpret the flag and execute accordingly.
    In this case checkbox name is P1_DELETE and it returns Delete, if checked.
    Anonymous block with in the process looks as follows:
    declare
    l_result VARCHAR2(1024);
    begin
    l_result := test_function(:P1_DELETE);
    end;

    Hi Visu,
    checkboxes in APEX are handled as arrays, namely APEX_APPLICATION_GLOBAL.VC_ARR2. To pass and process the checked values of checkboxes in a pl/sql function or procedure you could use the following way, assuming you have a checkbox named P1_DELETE with a single return value of "Delete"
    DECLARE
        l_checkbox_values apex_application_global.vc_arr2;
    BEGIN
        l_checkbox := :P1_DELETE;
        -- calling function test_function processing the value
        test_function(NVL(l_checkbox(1), 'SOME_OTHER_VALUE'));
    END;If the checkbox is not checked then the array at position 1 is null and you have to process that as you like.
    If your checkbox would be a group than the array would be colon separated such as 1:2:3:4 etc. and you would have to loop the array like:
        FOR idx IN 1..l_checkbox.COUNT LOOP
            test_function(l_checkbox(idx));
        END LOOP;Hope that helps.

  • Function and procedure call overhead in PL/SQL

    ( I come from a programming background - java/c++ etc and not much PL/SQL )
    Im trying to get a feel of how much extra cycles are spent if something is wrapped inside a function or procedure. I mean will it become considerably inefficient if the logic is within a function as opposed to be directly inline ?

    I did some timings a few years ago and found procedure calls to be slightly more efficient than function calls, presumably due to the fact that functions must pass values back through the function invocation and procedures don't. This may have changed in more recent releases but you can check it yourself.
    Set up a function and a procedure and use dbms_utility to get a starting and ending time marker (this will be the number of seconds from an arbitrary start point as microseconds; you will have to convert). Get a start time, loop through the calls a lot of times, get and end time, and subtract the end time from the start time.
    The prevailing though is that use functions to return values and procedures to perform actions. You can use functions in SQL if written correctly but not procedures.

  • Running SQL Server Function and Procedures from Oracle

    I am trying to run SQL Server 2005 functions and/or procedures from a SQL statement in Oracle. I have gone throught the hetergeneous services and have connected to the SQL Server database successfully. I can also do a query to a table in SQL Server successfully; but I have not been able to execute a procedure or a function.

    Have you tried Oracle syntax? It seems to me that you have only tried T-SQL syntax, e.g. execute proc.
    Wrap it in a begin..end tag like you would a normal PL/SQL function or proc call. Assumption is that as Oracle makes the remote database (via the dblink) look like an Oracle database, you should also play along and pretend it is one and treat it as such.
    E.g.declare
      r integer;
    begin
      -- execute remote proc
      procFoo@dblink( 'ABC' );
      -- call a remote function
      r := funcFoo@dblink( 123 );
    end;

  • Can SQL Developer control versioning of stored functions and procedures?

    Hi all. I have a problem with my project, for developing Oracle functions and procedures. My team want to control versioning of that.
    I found that Oracle SQL Developer support versioning features with CVS and Subversion. But I think it just about the files not functions and procedures.
    We don't want to control version of files and copy it to stored somethings..
    Do you have any idea?
    Thanks for reading this post.

    Since K asked :)
    Both SQL Navigator and Toad for Oracle support controlling PL/SQL at the FILE and DATABASE level.

    Hi,
    You can very well use DBMS_SQL Package supplied by Oracle for doing this.
    Search for DBMS_SQL in OTN. You will get all info regarding this.

  • Passing parameters to PL/SQL function called in VO

    Hi,
    I am writing a VO that is calling a PL/SQL function. The VO query looks like this.
    select xx_dummy_func (:1,:2) from dual
    Now, how can I assign these two parameter values at run time?
    Generally when we have a query parameters We do xxVO.setwhereclauseparam. But in the above scenario, its not a whereclause but instead a procedure parameter. Please let me know how to do it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards,

    Thats correct, basically, setwherecaluse param api, just replaces bind variables with the index values, whereever they are in the query!

  • PL/SQL function body returning SQL query - ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error

    I'm attempting to dynamically generate a rather large SQL query via the "PL/SQL function body returning SQL query" report region option.  The SQL query generated will possibly be over 32K.  When I execute my page, I sometimes receive the "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error" which points to a larger than 32K query that was generated.  I've seen other posts in the forum related to this dynamic SQL size limitation issue, but they are older (pre-2010) and point to the 32K limit of the DNS (EXECUTE IMMEDIATE) and DBMS_SQL.  I found this post (dynamic sql enhancements in 11g) which discusses 11g no longer having the 32K size limitation for generating dynamic SQL.  Our environment is on 11gR2 and using ApEx 4.2.1.  I do not know which dynamic SQL method -- DNS or DBMS_SQL -- ApEx 4.2.1 is using.  Can someone clarify for me which dynamic SQL method ApEx uses to implement the "PL/SQL function body returning SQL query" option?
    As a test, I created a page on apex.oracle.com with a report region with the following source:
    declare
      l_stub varchar2(25) := 'select * from sys.dual ';
      l_sql  clob := l_stub || 'union all ';
      br     number(3) := 33;
    begin
      while length ( l_sql ) < 34000 loop
        l_sql := l_sql || l_stub || 'union all ';
      end loop;
      l_sql := l_sql || l_stub;
      for i in 1 .. ceil ( length ( l_sql ) / br ) loop
        dbms_output.put_line ( dbms_lob.substr ( l_sql, br, ( ( i - 1 ) * br ) + 1 ) );
      end loop;
      return l_sql;
    end;
    The dbms_output section is there to be able to run this code in SQL*Plus and confirm the size of the SQL is indeed larger than 32K.  When running this in SQL*Plus, the procedure is successful and produces a proper SQL statement which can be executed.  When I put this into the report region on apex.oracle.com, I get the ORA-06502 error.
    I can certainly implement a work-around for my issue by creating a 'Before Header' process on the page which populates an ApEx collection with the data I am returning and then the report can simply select from the collection, but according to documentation, the above 32K limitation should be resolved in 11g.  Thoughts?
    Shane.

    What setting do you use in your report properties - especially in Type and in Region Source?
    If you have Type="SQL Query", then you should have a SELECT statement in the Region Source. Something like: SELECT .... FROM ... WHERE
    According to the ERR-1101 error message, you have probably set Type to "SQL Query (PL/SQL function body returning SQL query)". In this situation APEX expects you to write a body of a PL/SQL function, that will generate the text of a SQL query that APEX should run. So it can be something like:
    declare
    mycond varchar2(4000);
    begin
    if :P1_REPORT_SEARCH is not null THEN
    mycond:='WHERE LAST_NAME like :P1_REPORT_SEARCH ||''%''';
    end if;
    return 'select EMPLOYEE_ID, FIRST_NAME, LAST_NAME from EMPLOYEES ' ||mycond;
    end;
    And for escaping - are you interested in escaping the LIKE wildcards, or the quotes?
    For escaping the wildcards in LIKE function so that when the user enters % you will find a record with % and not all functions, look into the SQL Reference:
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/conditions007.htm
    (You would than need to change the code of your function accordingly).
    If you are interested in escaping the quotes, try to avoid concatenating the values entered by the user into the SQL. If you can, use bind variables instead - as I have in my example above. If you start concatenating the values into the text of SQL, you are open to SQLInjection - user can enter anything, even things that will break your SQL. If you really need to allow users to choose the operator, I would probably give them a separate combo for operators and a textfield for values, than you could check if the operator is one of the allowed ones and create the condition accordingly - and than still use bind variable for inserting the filtering value into the query.

The invoked JCA adapter raised a resource exception. Please examine the above error message carefully to determine a resolution.*
    Also, the fault description was a s follows:
    *JCA Resource Adapter location error. Unable to locate the JCA Resource Adapter via .jca binding file element <connection-factory/> The JCA Binding Component is unable to startup the Resource Adapter specified in the <connection-factory/> element: location='eis/DB/DBConn_215'. The reason for this is most likely that either 1) the Resource Adapters RAR file has not been deployed successfully to the WebLogic Application server or 2) the '<jndi-name>' element in weblogic-ra.xml has not been set to eis/DB/DBConn_215. In the last case you will have to add a new WebLogic JCA connection factory (deploy a RAR). Please correct this and then restart the Application Server.*
    I know, it looks like a JCA adapter error, but when I do a DB to DB table synchronization with this connection factory, no problems happen. Is ther any special procedure I should follow in mapping input data to db schema?
