Place Word table and apply defined formats in ID

Hi,
I have a Word file that contains text as well as tables. These tables are defined as table format in the Word file and I also have defined table formats in ID. Now I would like to place this Word file in ID and the table should automatically be formatted in ID according to my defined table formats. I know how this works with Excel files but I don't get it with the Word file. Any help is appreciated.

InDesign doesn't automatically format imported text, it just imports it as good as it can. It does not format text, nor tables.
Perhaps you were thinking of Table Styles? You can define as much as you like, but you have to apply them yourself, just like Paragraph Styles.

    I'm a total beginner when it comes to scripting, but I would like to create a script that finds the paragraph style "resultsUL" within a large table and applies the cell style "female". Sure wish the find/replace was able to account for cell styles as well as paragraph and character styles. Is anyone willing to help me with this? Thank you!

    I do it quickly defining a simple research on the "resultsUL" para style and using a loop with QuicKeys as:
    Cmd-0 is a shortcut associated to the "female" cell style.
    So, What I do: search the para style (Cmd-option-F) and apply the cell style, then search again…
    As easy to do with QuicKeys, I think that can be easily done with a [JS] (faster process!).

    Is it possible to capture from two tables (master and child table) and apply in one table?
    For example,
    1. DEPT and EMP tables in source database with relation
    DEPT table structure is like DEPT_ID, DEPT_NAME, LOC_NAME
    EMP table structure is like EMP_ID, EMP_NAME, EMP_DOJ, EMP_SAL, DEPT_ID
    2. EMP_DEPT_STAGING in destination database
    EMP_DEPT_STAGING table structure is like EMP_ID, EMP_NAME, EMP_DOJ, EMP_SAL, DEPT_ID. DEPT_NAME, LOC_NAME
    if there is any update in DEPT table, EMP_DEPT_STAGING should get populated with Department and its employee details. Similarly, if there is any update in EMP table EMP_DEPT_STAGING table should get populated with Employee details and along with department detail.
    Is it possible to accomplish this? If yes, could you please provide me some examples?

  • Place Excel file and keep accurate formatting

    In my organization, InDesign is used for creating several rather comprehensive price lists (500 pages and more ...).
    Needless to say, each price list contains a lot of tables. Currently we
    create tables in Excel,
    save it as pdf file and
    place the pdf in InDesign
    Of course, that's cumbersome (no Edit Original command --> each modification in the original table restarts the above mentioned process) - that gives us a hard time dealing with hundreds of tables... 
    It would be ideal to place Excel files directly - but after hours of trial & error I'm still not able to insert a table AND keep the accurate Excel-formatting. There are always some smaller or bigger deviations (unexpected line breaks, overset content, wrong line-styles, colors etc.)
    What I did:
    Enabled "Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files" in the File Handling Preferences
    Enabled "Import Options" when placing the Excel file
    Choosed "Formatted Table"
    It seems that some older xls files are more likely to raise problems. Newly-created xlsx files are fine most of the time (saving xls to xlsx doesn't make a difference though).
    What are your experiences on importing excel files? Thanks for any hint!

    The reason why we currently place our tables as PDF is, that we want to avoid any additional setup in InDesign. In fact we use InDesign "merely" to place & arrange all objects like tables, images, text etc. properly. There is no editing or formatting of content done in InDesign (Excel-spreadsheets are well-designed anyway) - I think otherwise our loads of price lists for different countries wouldn't be manageable at the moment ...
    I'm just looking for a way to keep the advantage of placing PDFs (retain accurate form) and eliminate the disadvantages (additional step of saving each spreadsheet as PDF and lack of the "Edit Original" option).
    Any ideas are appreciated!

    are you trying to use oracle lite just as a database? it is normally used as part of a data synchronisation from a server, replicating snapshots to create the database and tables on the client.
    PL/SQL format triggers are not supported in the oracle lite client. Java stored procedures are, but you would need to build the table interactions

    Hi, back in the day if you created a text box and pasted a table from word, it would format to text, if you did not have a text box it would paste as an image.
    I really just want to paste a word table straight into indesign, is this still doable?

    I'm very new to scripting. I want to learn the basics like creating a table, creating anchored frames, textframes, etc.
    Now, I want to create/find tables in a document and I would like to apply styles. I saw a script to do this. When I paste the script in Extendscript CS4, than the program crash.
    The program crash in part 1. When I create another script with only part 2 (see //part 2) then there is no problem.
    What do i wrong? And can anyone tell me what part 1 of the script do?

    Part 1 expects the text cursor to be anywhere inside a table -- either in the regular text, or with a cell, row, column, or the entire table selected.
    It walks "up" using its parent until it arrives at the table object itself.
    This will only work if the text cursor actually is anywhere inside a table. It does nothing when you are somewhere else, and it only works with the "current" table.

    If you want the script to create character styles: Bold , Italic, Bold Italic, etc, and replace local formatting with these styles, use scripts in post #3.
    But if you want find and change words, or/and replace local formatting with styles defined by you, use FindChangeByList script.
    If the latter, I recommend you to download and install Record Find Change script (written by Martin Fisher).
    Then choose settings you need in Find-Change dialog – make sure they work as expected – and run Record Find Change script. A Notepad/TextEdit file will pop up with a line containing the recorded setting. Copy it, open FindChangeList.txt, delete the contents of this file and paste the line you just copied (or add it to the bottom of the file).
    Repeat the process for all find-change operations you need.
    Finally run FindChangeByList.jsx to make all changes in one go.
    However, while using Record Find Change script, you may encounter a problem: it doesn’t record paragraph and character styles placed inside a group. But you can write references to such styles like so:

    Also, the code you showed is too verbose. You can combine declarations and and instantiation in one place and have 5 lines instead of 10:

    I like to know how to position at a word table and send data from a forms module using ole. I have done something similar before using bookmarks.It's easy and it works. My requirement now is to send data from a forms module to a word document, but this time, the word document will have bookmarks and a word table needs to be filled from data from the database. Just don't know how to get , access, reference the word table from forms.
    I'm still using forms6i in C/S mode.

    I am working on Designer ( SAP BO XI3.1)
    In my universe, I have 6 Contexts , I have one main table in each context and I want to apply row level restriction on a column from each table involved in the context.
    When I am doing this only I am able to add the restriction on only one table from a context. and the rest other contexts are missing.
    here I want to apply the restrictions on all 6 tables in a single restriction to the group.
    Please help me on this....

    I think if you are applying row level restrictions on each tables that are being used in universe then u must be adding all the context in your webi reports.
    So I think you need to add tables and apply where condition on each tables and your restriction will work.
    I will create one demo universe and try to apply the same and revert you asap.

  • Help! Word Tables are Coming into FrameMaker as Text Boxes

    Help! I am converting a Word file into FrameMaker (FM) the same way for the past 10 years---now all of a sudden the Word tables are converting to text boxes, ahh! I open the Word file in FM, apply all my formatting & page layouts from my template, and then I go through and apply styles, format, etc.---this is the 2nd time in 2 weeks where ALL tables convert into text boxes in FM, help! I need to get these docs out ASAP! Thank you so much.

    Hi Arnis, it's happened with both FM8 & 10, and Word 2010. It's also happened when I save a PDF as an RTF---always worked in the past w/o any issues at all, but I just saved a 70-page doc from PDF to RTF, and ALL tables came in within text boxes...?
    I just saved the Word file as an RTF, brought it into FM, & it worked, thank God! Thank you so much for your help----what do you suggest about the PDF to RTF tables-in-text boxes issue? THANKS!!!

    Hi, I'm new here...  Well, the title says it all: I need to use (basically unchanged) nearly 100 tables from a book made recently with Word... Can I import them?
    It wouldn't be a problem making one new one (lines, etc...) with InDesign and then fill with text, but...  why repeat 100 different tables (that's my case) already done I can use without changes...  There must be a way to at least place a Word table into an ID document...  Thanks for all kinds of comments!

    OK, this looks like great news for me... So I understand ID places the Word table, and once inside ID, indeed ID sees it as a table you can vary... Is there any basic menu to vary one imported table, or is it a graphic (mouse) thing?  I really appreciate your advice, Bob...  I don't have much experience with tables in ID...  For example, how can I make the whole table smaller? Only by varying the placing of the lines one by one, or can I make it smaller in the way we make a jpg smaller?

    I've been reading a comments about style sheets, importing Word docs and formatting issues (in regards to importing Word docs and pre-determined styles/bullets/numbering).  I also saw that someone was trying to create a css outside of RH and was having issues.  This leads me to a couple of questions.
    1.  When importing Word docs, does RH create a separate css for each doc, or is there an option to not have this occur when performing the import process?
    2.  If I am understanding css', you should only have one per project, if you want all of html pages to appear identical, correct?
    3.  What do you do if you've made the mistake of having several different css' out there, making everything appear funky?  Can you create a new project and import the documents without the css and apply a new css (created in the new project) to all of the html files?  Will this assist in correcting a lot of the spacing, bullet and numbering problems?
    4.  Can I view the default css and edit it?
    I think I have a big problem on my hands.  I was trying to make things easier for SMEs who were designated to write procedures in Word by creating the pre-defined formats.  After reading PG's pages, I sunk into my chair.  I was having the problems he mentioned.  I tried to edit some of the pages in the html editor and appear to have made them worse.  I was trying to simplify the code a little (with what knowledge I currently have with html, which is minimal).  I am fortunate that I only have about 200 documents that could be impacted.  Any comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    That's the way it is, no option.

    With the "if you want them identical" proviso, you would only have one CSS but you don't have to have them all identical. That is your call.

    It's not a mistake but if you want to get out of that situation, you need to do some cleaning up. The first step will be to create a CSS that contains all your existing style names, note I say names. Each of your CSS files will have a variety of styles but let's make it easy for this explanation. One has H1, H2, P and P.Note (a class) while another has One has H1, H2, P and P.Warning (a class). Now let's say you have just two topics, one has CSS_1 and one has CSS_2. The H1, H2 and P styles may be the same or different but assuming they are different, you now want them to be the same so what you want is a CSS with H1, H2, P, P.Note and P.Warning. You could then apply that to both topics and all the content would be displayed as defined in CSS_3. Obviously the real task is bigger but the principals are the same.
    The way I would tackle it is to create a new CSS and copy in the styles from the biggest of your existing CSS files. Then I would look at the others and copy in any styles that are not already in. That gives you all the style names, albeit with the wrong appearance. Then you start working through the styles to get them right. It is not as bad as it sounds. I recommend using Top Style from http://www.bradsoft.com. There's a free version that only opens one CSS at a time but you can see what you are doing with it. The others can be open in Notepad.
    4.  Can I view the default css and edit it?

    Next time you need input from the SMEs, output to one Word template from RH so that they all have the same appearance. Their job is provide content so the styles are irrelevant to them.
