Plasma and Dolphin file manager

Hi,
I'm missing the Dolphin file manager for KDE Plasma 5.2 desktop environment. The one that I find is 'kdebase-dolphin', but when I try to install it, it reports a conflict 'kdebase-runtime and khelpcenter is in conflict', and I assume that 'kdebase-dolphin' is KDE 4. I don't want to erase khelpcenter to install kdebase-dolphin. Is there a dolphin file manager ready for plasma yet?
Kind regards

I use dolphin-git (from AUR) wich is build against of KF5. I haven't any problems with it.

  • [solved] dolphin file manager losing all custom places entries

    Hi all,
I am getting phantom problem with dolphin file manager, i added custom place entries there but suddenly they diappear from dolphin.
There is no any pattern in disappearance. They appear for few days without any problem, even after shutdown/reboot. But suddenly some day they disappear and i have to add them again.
I want to find cause of this problem then fix it.
Or at least find config file where dolphin store configuration about custom places that i can backup and restore to get back entries.
I checked ~/.kde4/share/config/dolphinrc but couldn't find there anything about custom places.
I am using KDE 4.14.5 and Dolphin 14.11.97

    Hi samtech09,
dolphin stores the configuration of the custom places in ~/.local/share/user-places.xbel.
The problem you described has already been reported upstream: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=343735

  • Fluxbox and a File Manager

I recently installed fluxbox, and how great it is. X11 configured very easily (better than in gentoo) and flux installed in about 5 sec.
    But ...
I need (want) a file manager. I discovered that gnome-mplayer has one when I click 'File -> Open'. But I can't figure how to open it outside of gnome-mplayer.
Is that a built in file manager, or can I get at it (and configure it)?
If I need a different one (I would use Thunar), would gnome-mplayer use the new installed one, or just the built in?

PCManFM is great, but I rather use Thunar for some reason I don't know..
You could use virtually any file manager, stretching from dolphin to terminals using cd/dir/cp/rm.
Try some, and find the right one for your own needs. The average archers goes for PCManFM, as it's lightweight and easy, but still does everything it needs to do.

  • How to disable CD-DRIVE checking, while using a Dolphin file manager

    Hello.
I  would like ask for a help. I have one problem that's quite annoying. It is related to checking cd-drive when using a dolphin file menager. It always cheecks it when Dolphin is launched from K or launcher on taskbar for the first time, again it happens when i close it and open again.
Is there a way to disable checking of cd-drive in Dolphin? This behaviour occurs on KDE with all linux system that i checked: Slackware, Arch, Kubuntu. Look at this:
Disabling CD-DRIVE checking, while using a file manager
I would like to disable it in order to speed up opening Dolphin, launching it.

Udisks2 is what dolphin uses to handle external drives of all kinds (USB, optical, etc).  Udisks is an automounting tool that allows normal users to mount disks.  The permission handling before was handled with consolekit and has now been replaced by systemd-logind (which is much better anyway).  So what I am suggesting is that it might be that dolphin is using udisks2 as the tool that polls for the existence of a disc in your optical drive.
Unfortunately, it is a bit more confusing than that because udisks2 is the replacement for the original udisks.  It is totally different and not compatible.  So I remember seeing a way to turn off optical drive polling, but I cannot remember if it was udisks or udisks2.  But it was done with a udev rule.
So I think if you tried to google for "udisks optical (or cd or dvd) polling" or something like that, you might be able to figure out how this is done.
Edit: unfortunately, I do not use dolphin or udisks2.  But I do have the original udisks installed.
Edit2: It seems that the method I remembered is for the original udisks.

  • Dolphin file manager flickers when viewing certain folders

Like the title said: when viewing certain folders (my home folder and /) Dolphin flickers. When viewing any other folder there is no flicker at all. I found a post on the Ubuntu forums which claimed this is a qt3 problem, but if that is the case Dolphin should flicker when viewing any folder, right? The same holds for my video driver (fglrx 8.3).
    Anyone got any suggestions?

We once had a patch for qt3 applied to our packages, which prevented the flickering in konqueror by creating a small buffer for the icons... It was exactly the same scenario you are describing here...
However, this patch does not work properly anymore (it does apply, but there are some small rendering issues, especially when moving icons on the desktop), but if you are a programmer you could take a look at it
    Here is the patch: http://www.kdemod.ath.cx/svn/branches/k … view.patch

  • [SOLVED]Iced Tea Fails to Launch Webmin File Manager

Last night I started receiving an exception error when trying to launch Webmin File Manager from my laptop. I googled combinations of Webmin File Manager and Java and found posts dating back to 2009, 2010 stating webmin didn't work well with Iced Tea but did work with Sun's Java. Fortunately the Arch Java wiki indicated jre existed in the AUR. So a simple,
    sudo pacman -Rs icedtea-web-java7
    followed by,
    sudo packer -S jre
and Webmin File Manager is accessible again.
My thanks to AUR maintainer Det.
Edit: After converting to jre I was able to access webmin filemanager but unable to access webmin ssh2. I reverted back to icedtea and went to the security console. i added https://serverip:10000/ to the exceptions and now both ssh2 and filemenager work.

  • What's a good lightweight file manager for fluxbox?

I just installed arch and it's flippin awesome. I installed fluxbox because I prefer a light window manager with lots of functionality. When I used fluxbox with ubuntu I used thunar. But this time around since I'm using arch I want to use a file manager less dependent on less libraries and other share resources. So whats a good functional and maintained file manager that would be good for fluxbox?

I tried both thunar and pcmanfm, uninstalled them and stick with tuxcmd. The only little problem you might come into, is to manually add the buttons to mount cds and usbs (pmount helps here), unless you put them on fstab and they automatically appear there.
Well, just give it a try
    $ pacman -S tuxcmd
note: if you ever tried total commander on windows, you'll fit in this one like a glove
I just checked this out and it's pretty nice. The only thing is that it does everything by file extension and not by mime type, which is counter-intuitive for a Linux desktop IMO.
Altho you can put name+extension as 'name'(so you can see the file 'as one'), yes, you'll have to manually had the programs you want to open each file type/extension.
    Thanks for spotting that out

  • Changing icons in dolphon file manager

I am a little lost.  I recently installed the oxyfaenza icon theme on my kde desktop.  It is looking great except for the fact that the split view in dolphin file manager stays the same as with the oxygen icon theme.  I have tried changing the icon via configure toolbars dialog in doplhin but the icon reverts back to the oxygen icon after one use.  Does anyone know of a solution, any help would be appreciated.

Was you able to resolve above issue , if yes please let me know. I am experiencing the similar problem of loosing connection frequently with the network connection.

  • [SOLVED] A File Manager That Can Group Folders and Files like Fences

I want to create a custom desktop environment in Arch Linux and I'm looking for a file manager that is similar to Windows Explorer in terms of features and functionality and can group files and folders into fences like Stardock Fences does for the desktop in Windows.
If such a feature isn't available then I, at least, want to group both files and folders into individual groups based on custom parameters and not just Date or Size.
Is there any File Manager in Linux that can fulfill my requirements? If not, is there any file manager which can be extended (by scripting or programming) easily to include the features that I'm looking for?

ANOKNUSA wrote:The important thing to keep in mind here is that Windows Explorer is the foundation for the entire Windows interface. If you've ever seen the exploere.exe process die for any reason, you know what I mean. That's the reason it's able to utilize functionality like Fences. In order to get the same kind of functionality in Linux, you'd need a very similar setup. KDE + Konqueror are what come closest from my experience, since the Plasma interface actually has widgets built in that do what you want, but if you use KDE then you use KDE. Full stop. KDE is highly customizable, but only if you use its environment and parts.
Nah. I don't wanna use KDE. I've heard that it's the most resource hungry DE out there.
OK, maybe not something like fences in a file manager but I, at least, want to be able to group files AND folders (within a folder or a directory) under a single parameter and that parameter can be custom and not just pre defined like Date and Size.
Huh. I'm down to Konquerer, like you suggested, and Dolphin. Can I use either as a stand alone file manager in a custom DE in Arch without using KDE?

  • How do I... (1) "play" a ppt; (2) "see" my sub-folders and their files in "Docs To Go" or "File Manager"?

This is written for the Playbook blog writer in the hope that he will see it here and post a blog answer. However, a reply from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks.
[2 questions about PPBB OS 2.0+]
Hi. Thanks for your very informative blog. I would appreciate it if you would consider writing blog tips to answer the following:
    1) Why can't I organize my files in "Documents" or "File Manager" to "see" them in their sub-folders?
BBPB allows me to create SUB folders in the Documents folder, through my pc's access to the "Documents" folder in the Playbook. However, then I cannot "see" these created sub-folders on my BBPB after I disconnect my BBPB from my PC.
All the files I downloaded into these "sub" folders end up all together in the file list in "DOCS TO GO", either in "Documents" or "Music" or "Video" or "Pictures" ---- but these files are NOT separated into the sub-folders I created. The same thing happens in "FILE MANAGER" i.e. all files on the Playbook are in ONE place only.
Is the Playbook OS ever going to allow one to view sub-folders and what is in them, other than using the pc to do it? For example, it would be desirable to put all my ppt files into one folder.
    2) How do I "play" a PPT file in the BBPB?
The BBPB "User Guide" says that I can "view, edit, or play" Powerpoint Presentations. However, although it describes how to "view" or "edit" individual slides, it does not say how to "play" ("run") a slideshow. How do you "play" a self-running slideshow?
For example, in Windows, you can click "play.bat" (in a saved "presentation cd" folder on a cd or USB stick) to run the ppt with sound and pictures saved in that folder (you don't need the Powerpoint program itself for this, since you are using the "pptview.exe" file in the same folder to "play" it). However, after downloading all the files in this "presentation cd" folder to the Playbook, I could only see one of them, the ppt file itself ---- and there is no icon in the Playbook to "play" the slideshow, it seems. Help?!
     Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

First, I use an app called "File Browser" to view those subfolders.
As for running a powerpoint, I can open a ppt file and it runs in Documents to go. Next to the "Close" button there are three icons. The third one runs the ppt file as a slideshow.
    1. Please thank those who help you by clicking the "Like" button at the bottom of the post that helped you.
    2. If your issue has been solved, please resolve it by marking the post "Solution?" which solved it for you!

  • Is there any downside to using a reference type library if I use Time Capsule and will do file management only from within Aperture?

Have done a lot of reading to get prepared to convert to Aperture 3 and have this question regarding setting up my library type.
I'm not a professional -just a heavy user hobbyist.
It appears that the major factors in using reference style is to backup the images with Time Capsule and always do moves or deletes from within the Aperture application.
If my architecture matters here's what I have that may be involved in photo management and editing:
iMac (latest 27" high power version with lots of memory)
Internal 2TB HD where the library is stored
External (FireWire) 2TB HD where the images are stored
External (FireWire) 6TB HD backup drive
In the future an iPad for remote work on images (when/if available) and a Mac laptop (for same remote use)
I see major downside issues to letting the library manage my files - such as inaccessibility (or awkward accessibility) to the images for other programs, and performance issues when the library gets large (thousands of images or 100+ gb in size)
The chief complaints I've seen regarding using a reference mode is the broken link issues created if file management is done outside of Aperture (adds, deletes, moves of files) and the inability to use the Vault function for backup.
One feature that I imagine I'd like to have is maximum integration with Final Cut Pro X and that's one area I haven't seen much on and would be interested to hear about if that integration is affected with the choice of managed vs referenced library types. (I like to produce film clips that are combinations of pics and video and want to be set up so that is done in the easiest fashion when working in FCP X)
I'm sure I've not seen all sides of this issue and would like to see some discussion around this question.
    Thanks to everyone contributing!
    Craig

Goody, Goody, you hit a few of my favorite subjects! Herewith some comments, with the usual caveats - true to the best of my knowledge and experience, others may have different results, YMMV, and I could be wrong.
I run Aperture on two machines:
-- 2007 Mac Pro with 2x2.66 GHz Xeon, 21 GB of RAM, a 5770 GPU, and multiple HD. I have about 11,000 images, taking up 150 GB. (Many are 100 MB TIFF, scanned slides)
-- 2006 Mac Book Pro with 1 2.0 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB of RAM and a 240 GB SSD.
    Two very different machines.
-- Aperture Libraries are all the same - Managed or Referenced. If Managed, then the Master image files are inside the Package, if Referenced, they are outside, and you can have any combination you want. Managed is easier, but Referenced is not hard if you are the least bit careful.
-- While the sheer size of an Aperture Library is not a big issue, the location on disk of the different components can have a tremendous impact on performance.
-- Solid State Drives (SSD) read and write faster than regular Hard Disks (HD) and, what is more important, empty HD read and write much faster than full HD.
-- Aperture speed requires a combination of RAM, CPU, graphics processing unit (GPU) speed, and disk speed. The more RAM you have, the less paging you will see. With enough RAM, the next bottle neck is CPU (speed and cores) and GPU speed. But even then you will still have to fetch an image (longer if you pull the full resolution Master, read and rewrite the Version file, and update the Preview and Thumbs.
    So what works?
-- RAM, RAM, and more RAM. 4 GB will work, but you will page a bit. 8 GB is much faster. On my old MacPro the sweet spot was about 16 GB of RAM.
-- Keep your Library on your fastest (usually internal) drive. Keep that disk as unloaded as possible. How do you keep it unloaded? Either buy BIG, 1 TB+ or move your Masters off onto another disk. The good news here is that as Master files are written only once and never rewritten, speed of this disk, as opposed to the disk that holds the Library, is not important. There is a one second pause as the Master is read into memory and, if you have enough RAM, that is it - the Master will never be paged out. If, on the other hand, you do not have enough RAM, and you do a lot of adjusting at full resolution, then the speed of the disk that holds your Masters will become very important due to paging.
-- I found that I picked up a tiny bit of speed by keeping the Masters on a dedicated disk. Thus, in your configuration, if you can dedicate that 2 TB FW HD to your Masters, you should see very nice performance.
Final notes on backups and archives:
-- One conventional wisdom is that you should make an archive copy of every image file before or as you load them into your system. (Aperture in this case.) This archive is then never touched or deleted.
-- An alternative approach is that you do not keep such an archive, but only the images that you have in your Aperture Library. And when you delete from the Library, you no longer keep a copy anywhere.
    I do the following:
-- Card to Aperture. Card is then kept at least 24 hours until all of my backups have run. (I use three - Time Machine, Clone, and off site.)
-- I do not keep archive copies. If I decide to delete a file, my only recourse is to recover it from Time Machine during the six month cycle of my Time Machine backups. Thereafter, it is lost.
There are merits to both approaches.
Hope this is clear, correct, and responsive to your needs.
