Playing ProRes Clips with Quicktime

Is there a Quicktime plugin/update that will allow me to play ProRes clips in QT player? (I have not upgraded to FCS2 yet; waiting for new Mac Pro)
AND will I need FSC2 to convert a ProRes clip to H.264 for web in Compressor?
Thanks.

You could probably use SnapzPro X2 ( http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/ ) to capture the clips as they play on your desktop.

  • Ingested videos not playing in stereo with Quicktime or after exporting with compressor

Why does it seem like every time I try to do something just mildly complex I'm stymied by some bug or problem with the software?
    Here's the deal:
    0) I have footage was shot with a stereo camcorder, a JVC GR-DV3000 (circa 2003), with built-in stereo mics.
    1) I ingest the footage from the Mini DV tape and save it to a camera archive using Final Cut Pro X (latest version).
    2) I use Final Cut Pro to pull the events out of archive.
    3) When the events are played from within Final Cut Pro X, I hear strereo and audio meters indicate the audio is in stereo (left and right channels have different volume levels).
    4) When the events are played with the open source software, VLC, I hear stereo, too.
    5) When I export the files for playing on an Apple device using Final Cut Pro, the audio is in stereo as you would expect.
    BUT:
    5) When I play the event clips with QuickTime from my hard drive after step 2 above, I get no audio from the right channel. Weird, right?
    But most annoying of all:
    6) When I use Compressor 4 (instead of Final Cut) to output the event clips to "SD for Apple Devices" using the default audio settings, I get no audio from the right channel, either.
    7) I've got hundreds, if not thousands, of clips. I'm not about to save each clip manually with FCPX. I need to batch convert these files with Compressor.
    8) I've tried various combinations of the audio import settings ("Analyze and fix audio problems," "Separate mono and group stereo audio," and "Remove silent channels." These options have not solved the issue for me. The clips still play in mono in QuickTime.
When I look at the properties of the file in QuickTime, here's what it shows:
    DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480 (640 x 480)
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Left
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Why it's telling me the other 3 channels are unused, I have no idea. As I mentioned, the footage was shot in stereo and even Final Cut plays it in stereo.
Here's what VLC says about the very same file:
    Stream 0:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: Mono
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bits per sample: 16
    Stream 1:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: 1
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bitrate: 512 kb/s
    Stream 2:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: 1
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bitrate: 512 kb/s
    Stream 3:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: 1
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bitrate: 512 kb/s
    Stream 4:
    Type: Video
    Codec: (DV Video (dvc)
    Resolution: 720 x 480
    Frame Rate: 29.970030
    Decoded Format: Planar 4:1:1 YUV
If anyone can point in the right direction, I'd much appreciate it.

I ended up just using iMovie to capture video from the camera. The clips now play in stereo in QuickTime perfectly.
It's interesting to note that iMovie saves the clips as .dv file types, not .mov file types like FCPX does.
And it turns out the iMovie capture is *much* smoother. It actually "just works." Ingesting tapes with FCPX, I had to cross my fingers, spin on my head and pray three times to a statue of Steve Jobs before it would work (and even then it would do weird stuff).
The only downside of using iMovie is that it doesn't have the camera archive feature.
I really don't understand why, with $120 billion in the bank, Apple seems to be churning out software as an afterthought. No, software is not where they make their money, but they are ruining their reputation. Ah, well, first world problems.

Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

  • Playing .asf Files with Quicktime?

I have downloaded some video files, but they are .asf files, which are played with Microsoft Windows Media Player. Is there a way I can play these and possibly convert them with Quicktime? I am using QT Pro 7.0.3. I am currently using Flip4mac to open wmv files with Quicktime, but it doesn't work for asf files. Can anyone help?

  • Trimming a clip with quicktime 7

I have been working with a feature on quicktime x call "trim" which will trim a clip in quicktime which results in a smaller clip size. I am now on another computer which uses tiger and quicktime 7 pro. I found the same feature however when I trim and save a clip, the size remains the same. Is this correct? Does this feature work differently in older versions?

QuickTime Player Pro's "Trim to Selection" is a non destructive edit. It can be "undone" via the Edit menu.
A regular "Save" doesn't remove the trimmed portion from the file so the file size remains the same as the source. "Save As" will remove the edited portion from the file.
Want a smaller file size? Use Save As.

  • How to play .VOB files with QuickTime?

I get an "Error opening file" message trying to play a VTS014.VOB file. This is a file of home movies scanned to the above file. I use Pro (QuickTime™ Version 7.1.6, Player Version 7.1.6) with the mpeg-2 addition and went through the process identifying QuickTime as the default player in "Get Info".
I can watch with iDVD and something else called VLC Media Player. I want to be able to pull off segments for other applications like making an DVD with just parts of the full file.
    Thanks for your help.

The mpeg2playbackcomponent will not play mpeg2 files that are in transport stream format, as the VTS in the file name you cite suggests. There is, however, a freeware that can use the playback component and read transport streams. It also will do some simple editing of vob files and save them without re-encoding, or export them to non-mpeg form such as DVStream for use in apps like iMovie.

  • Playing DVD clips with Keynote

    Greetings,
I'm trying to figure out a way to have movie clips play from within Keynote '08 without having to leave and use an outside program like DVD Player. Is this possible? Thanks.

Hi. I have been putting together a KN presentation with quite a few movie clips (see my other current posts). My process is to use QTPro to make a selection and save that to a folder (called Movie Edits) in .mov format.
Putting them into KN is simple: you can just drag them into a place holder on any slide as you would an image file. The issue I am experimenting with at the moment is whether to have all the movies embedded in the KN file or to leave them all 'outside'. Be warned: you have to make this decision right at the start of creating your presentation. Create a new presentation and do "save as..." with with relevant box unchecked. Once you've started saving the project with movies embedded, you can't get them out and your KN document may bloat unacceptably.
The advantage of leaving them outside is you get a smaller KN file which is quicker on Open and Saves. The disadvantage is that the presentation is stuck on your computer and you can't move the movie edit files around or rename them. On the other hand you can always do another 'Save as...' when the project is complete and this time elect to embed all media files.

  • Unable to play AVI files with Quicktime

I installed Perian and the xvid codec but still cannot play all AVI videos in QT. Not really a problem since I have VLC. However it would be nice to be able to play AVI files in QT as well

AVI container can accept a real mess of codecs, not all of which are provided in Perian.  Use a utility such as
Media Info - http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net - to get details of codecs used in multimedia
to see which video codec is used and compare it with the list on Perian's web site.

  • Problems rendering HD clips with MP2, and Quicktime with DVC50 compression.

I am using After Effects CS3 on Mac 10.5.8
Ok, so we got this fancy new Grass Vally clip player that takes a very small number of formats. I am trying to render HD clips that are between 10 and 14 seconds long with audio embedded.
One of the formats suggested is MP2.  When I try rendering an MP2 file the file extension comes out as .m2v
Also, the audio file is rendered as a separate .wav file.  The video looks fine and is of a very small file size, but I can't play it back with Quicktime Pro. I'm not sure if the clip player will play an m2v file but I know that the audio has to be embedded in the same clip. I've looked through all of the audio settings and I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.
One of the other formats it will take is Quicktime with DVCPRO50 codec.  I was able to render out some HD (1920 x 1080) files but the resolution looks like it is only about half what it should be. I've been through all of the settings that I can think of and can't see what is causing it.
I am pretty much at the end of my rope. I even called Grass Valley support and told them my problems. I just assumed that most of their customers would be creating animations with After Effects. The tech support guy wasn't even familiar with After Effects so I come to you guys for support.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Thanks, I will try the MPEG Streamclip.
I don't mean to imply that the tech support guy hadn't heard of After Effects but he had no real experience with it. I'm certain that this isn't the first time an After Effects user has called Grass Valley with this issue. I think their standard issue answer is "It's not our problem, call Adobe."  I've worked at four different television stations and at each one we have used AE to render movies to our clip player. I have no doubt that it's the industry standard for this kind of work so it kind of baffles me that Grass Valley has no idea how to make it work with their product.
When the Grass Valley installer came the first question I asked him was "What kind of file formats does it take?" He said he didn't know and to just start trying different things to see if they work. I pretty much told him that I didn't have time for trial and error and that it should be on page one of the manual. We eventually found the spec sheet buried somewhere in the appendix. When I called GV tech support he just rerferred me back to that sheet. Basically he's getting paid to read the manual to me but doesn't have any idea about how it actually applies to their product.

  • IMoviemobile export to Camera Roll will not play with quicktime on PC (video plays but with black screen, audio ok)

Videos created in iMovie on the new ipad will not play on PC with Quicktime after being exported to the Camera Roll and copied to the PC. Movie will play but with a black screen only. Audio ok. Was able to do before ios 6 but not now.

I'm having the same problem. All of the movies I export out of iMovie since upgrading to the latest version show up with no video, only audio, in Quicktime. Ironically the video place just fine in Windows Media Player and also in iTunes.

  • I deleted a clip with "-v" in Capture Scratch- now what

I had to move some clips from one disk to another. I noticed that I had 2 clips with similar name (1) clipname.mov (2)clipname-v.mov. I could play the first with quicktime, I could not play the other so I deleted it.
Now whenever I open the project it looks for "clipname-v.mov". It takes forever the stop looking for this. How can I delete whatever it is that is trying to pull this up?

Any filters and plugins you put on the clip in the timeline will remain. When you recapture the clip, it'll just fall into place.
The issue here is that the drive you captured your media to was formatted FAT32, which has a 4GB file limit. Your video was broken up into small chunks, all tied to the first clip. The -av files aren't openable on their own. If you format your hard drive Mac OS Extended, then your captured clips will appear as one file per clip.
