Playing smart playlist by release date on Shuffle

I cannot get this to work. I'm trying to listen to podcasts by release date but for some reason it's not. I have the smart playlist setup to include "Most recently added". Is there some other way to do this?

Create a playlist and add the podcasts you want to
it. The order you add them to the list will be the
order they play in. If you mix this order up, just
click on the far left bar above the track numbers to
restore it to the original order.
Since the podcasts under the podcast icon are sorted
in order by release date, if you drag a group of
podcasts into your playlist they will stay in that
order.
Hope this answers your question.
Yeap, I've been meaning to reply. This workaround does work for me. It's not perfect, but it's easy enought to create a new playlist called 'podcasts" and dragging and dropping the latest podcasts in it, and then manually syncing it to the ipod.
Of course I have to do the same for videos too.
BTW, most interesting we have the same computer. Except mine is the 500mhz version of the 1st gen tibook.

  • Recently played Smart Playlist not working

I read here that this was a problem back in 2005, but I'm only encountering it now with the latest iTunes upgrade. I noticed today that my Recently Played smart playlist did not update for all the songs I played today. It shows only 1 song played today, which I think I played through the computer/iTunes. All of the songs played on my ipod today are not being recognized as "recently played". This is affecting the majority of my other smart playlists because they mostly work on a "least recently played" or "least often played" idea.
Is this happening to anyone else and does anyone have a fix?
    Thanks -

  • 10.2.1 Recently Played smart playlist (bug)

Like most users, I often skip around from song to song before the song is finished. These songs used to be added automatically to the "Recently Played" smart playlist (set to Last played in the last 30 days, live updating).
I have noticed since 10.2.1 update, that a song must be fully played before being added to said playlist.
It is very time consuming to scrub through the entire song of each song you play to get it added to the recently played smart playlist.
    Has anyone else noticed this?

  • SMART PLAYLISTS: ORGANIZING BY DATE ADDED & KEEPING ALBUM TRKS IN ORD

    Dear Knowledgeable Users of iPod:
I would like to create a Smart Playlist that will do the 2 following things when I listen to music in my iPod:
    1) Play albums in the order of date added
    (I solved this one)
    2) Play the songs in the order they come on the album
    (Couldn't solve this...)
Summary: playing music in the order it was added to the library AND maintaing the original track order of the albums...
Is this to much to ask, it seems pretty practical-
In an attempt to accomplish this, I made a Smart Playist & selected:
Date Added: In the last 24 months
-This solved the 1st problem beautifuly
But now the albums play backwards- (as you know, iTunes rips album's songs in their original order, so when your sort by 'Recently Added', each album plays backwards ! -last song first, first song last and so on- This is problem I want to solve-
    To summerize:
How can listen to my most recently added albums while the songs in their original order?
The point of all this is for listening to music on my iPod-
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated-
    Thanks in advance!

There are some issues to with live updating & smart playlists on iTunes 9, and also those containing mixed content, e.g. Podcasts & Music, though I'm not sure that is the problem here. You should be able to sort the playlist on any heading you like and then use *Copy to Play Order* to control the order that will be synced.

  • Itunes is not sorting my podcast playlist by 'Release Date'?

I have a Macbook running Mac OS 10.5.8.  In iTunes 10.5.2 [11], I set up a playlist of my  podcasts sorted by 'Release Date' & have everything automatically sync to my 4th Generation iPod Touch which is running ios 5.0.1 [9A405].
On my Macbook in iTunes with my iPod Touch attached by the iPod Touch cable, I see that my iPod touch is sorted by 'Release Date'.  But, when I look on my iPod Touch is not sorted by 'Release Date', but sorted by random?
On my macbook itunes does sort by 'Release Date', but not on my iPod Touch
When I was running ios 4, I didnt have this problem, could it be a bug in ios 5.0.1?
    Harold

    Hi Harold,
I have a similar problem with my ipod nano, though the podcasts do not play in a random order when they get to the ipod; whererever I start to play the podcast, once that is finished, it automatically plays the previous episode instead of the next episode. Very annoying.

  • "now playing" smart playlist

There's a feature in Windows Media Player that I would like to mimic in itunes.
There is a "now playing" window in WMP that I can simply drag songs into. It's sort of like a temporary playlist. This way if you want to listen to say these two albums, or start listening to something and want to add what you're listening to, you don't have to make a brand new playlist, you can simply add to what is now playing.
Is there anyway to do this in itunes? Set up a smart playlist that just has what you're now playing and then when you're finished listening it automatically deletes it? Or am I stuck making and deleting thousands of playlists all the time?

Yes, but if I use the party shuffle, then the songs are still there the next time I turn on itunes and pretty soon I have every song I've listened to in my party shuffle and have to delete them in order to get the desired effect I'm looking for.......perhaps windows media player just has better options.....

  • Most Played Smart playlist problem

i have a smart playlist that has my 500 most played songs. when i have my ipod hooked up to my computer, it has the playlist in the correct order but when i am using my ipod the playlist shows it in the order that i originally started the playlist in. for example, when i made the list my top five songs went: brand new, jojo, forever in fall, brand new, weezer. and it still shows it in that order on my ipod. but it should now read: brand new, jojo, jojo, weezer, mae.
now here is the weird thing, if i play a song enough it will get added to that playlist. so i can play songs enough to get them on the playlist but it cant get it in the correct order it seems.
any help? BTW i manually update my ipod.

    ok. trying now.
ok, that kinda worked. this is what i did.
    unplugged ipod.
    went to most played.
picked a lower song and just played it over and over.
it still stayed in the same place.
i hooked it up to the computer and the most played playlist said that it was the number one most played song.
i then hit copy to play order and sync then unplugged ipod.
looked at playlist and it was right.
BUT, isnt there a way for the playlist to be updated without having to hook it up the my computer and having to do the copy play order and sync?

  • Podcasts Sorting by Release-Date in Smart Playlist

    Hi, all
I keep all episodes of prefered podcast programs (like business week's cover stories), i sort all episodes of each program by release date, which i believe is the most accurate sorting method.
When i create a smart playlist of one particular program, i find the order of episodes in that program's playlist are all wrong, and there is no way to sort them in right order, which is, by release date. Unless i manually ordering them.
The "sort-by-release-date" option does come out while organising the entire podcasts library, but it dissapears in playlist or smart playlist, can I get it back?
Athlon 64, 1024MB, WD Raptor 74GB   Windows XP

You are correct- when creating a Smart Playlist, you are not allowed to sort the playlist by "Release Date".
I find I am able to right click on the current column headers and choose to view "Date Modified" or "Date Created".
By sorting by these columns, I find I can usually sort by the most recently released or downloaded episodes.

  • Smart Playlists with Date Criteria

It seems any smart playlist with a date criteria (ie: Date Added) will not show up on any device that access the iTunes Match Service. I have several smart playlists with a date criteria and they show up blank on my iphone and ipad. Yet, if I delete the date criteria, the playlist populates on the device. I tried creating a smart playlist with just the date criteria and then in a new smart playlist referencing the date criteria smart playlist and the new playlist will not upload to icloud because an icloud smart playlist can not reference another smart playlist

So I went through technical support because I had this exactly some problem.  Smart playlist shows up in iTunes on my iMAC, as well as via Apple TV (both via iCloud and Home Sharing options.)  It also fully populates those smart playlists.
For my pre-existing Smart Playlists (that only have criteria for the GROUPING field) show up, have songs, but are quite a few songs short.  I then created a brand new play list with brand new tracks... and its empty on iPhone 4S and iPAD2.  Apple TV and IMAC are fine.
So technical support provided me with this response:  For smart playlists to work on iOS devices, the songs must be downloaded to the device.
My feedback was this: So this is chicken and the egg.  You create the playlist to easily locate and download those songs to your device, but you cant because they have to be on your device before they will show in the playlist.
I suppose the only work around is to create the smart playlist w/ your filters.  THEN create a regular playlist and copy everything in the SMART Playlist into the regular playlist.
I have not used Apple products for very long... approaching 2 years.  I moved everything to Apple.  Computers, laptops, portable devices, etc... I have been VERY impressed.  HOWEVER, this makes the point of Smart Playlists completely manual when it comes to your iOS device.
I will for sure be launching a compliant to www.apple.com/feedback.

  • Smart Playlists w/"Date modified" not syncing to iPhone/iPad

I'm posting this to the iTunes forum, because after a few months there's been no answer in the iPhone forum. User "kylerrs" found this first:
    kylerrs wrote:
Okay, so I normally have a custom made smart playlist which I name "Recently Modified" so I can see the list of songs which I have recently updated in quality or changed the artwork etc., but since updating to iOS5, this playlist still works fine on iTunes but appears blank on my iPhone 4 while all other playlists work fine. Any reason why this might be?
I have the exact same problem. After using a smart playlist based on "Date modified" — like kylerrs — for years, it stopped working. Very frustrating. The playlist works fine in iTunes, but the corresponding playlist on my iPhone and my iPad is always empty.
The sad thing is, this feels like Windows — something mysteriously stops working, you can't figure it out, and you give up — figuring, "Oh well, I just can't do that anymore..."
The original thread, with screenshots, is here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18678228#18678228

I revive this old thread, because I had the very same problem.   After searching for other reports of problems with playlists, I tested a trick that worked for another problem.  And it worked!
Simply add a second rule to the smart playlist, one that has no effect on the results if you set to "match all": -- Playlist is 'Music' --
Sync your playlist again on the iPhone, and magically the contents looks now the same than in iTunes.

  • Sorting my Podcasts/Smart Playlist

I used to be able to sort my podcasts in a smart playlist, from my highest rating to lowest rating.
I must have done something, but now my podcasts are no longer in the same rated order after syncing to my iPhone.
I know I am doing something wrong cuz I did this before, but cannot figure it out.
    Any help would be appreciated

Smart playlist sorted on Release date still out of order on my touch. How can it not make sense to the Apple people that a serial podcast should be played in order of release date. And multiple related podcasts selected in the same smart playlist should all be played in temporal order. Even filtering on smart lists cannot be based on the release date. IE I want all of the podcasts "RELEASED" in 2008 in a list and I want to play them in temporal order. It is such a no brainer that I cannot believe that I am writing this again for the FOURTH itunes release!! Smart lists?? More like moron lists!!
Seriously regretting recommending apple to friends. WIth this much incompetence they are likely to come out with the latest and greatest new tablet device and forget to put a camera in it.

  • Smart Playlists on iOS

Still not working properly for me. How about anyone else? It's an improvement - I see a few songs in them now, but in some I am only seeing one or two where there should be hundreds.
Haven't been able to check the play count / last played yet but will experiment further with it tomorrow.

iOS 5.1 did not fix all the problems related to smart playlist in the iPad 2 with iTunes Match subscription.
Smart Playlists based on dates are not syncing across all devices and Macs/PCs. For example, Recently Played.
Smart Playlists based on play counts are not syncing across all devices and Macs/PCs.
Sorting of songs in iPad2 is out of whack.  iPad2 music app seems to ignore the sort order in smart playlists. this is very annoying since I have a lot of classical music in my library in which track arrangement is very important. I'm not having this problem with my iPod Touch though, just in the iPad2.
iOS 5.1 did fix one of my problems: the Smart Playlists in the iPad2 that are based on the "Comments" field. My smart playlists are now correctly populated with songs.
These are my observations, so far.

  • Smart playlist isn't being followed

I recently have been using the smart playlist as a way to get around the loss of the shuffle by album feature on my touch. For a while it was working fine and suddenly, the ipod no longer follows the playlist. If I pick a sing off the playlist, it will play the first song and then after that, play a random song instead of the one that the playlist says should be next. I tried turning off the live updating, as well as copying the smart playlist to a dumb one and it still doesn't work.
C'mon Apple, restore the shuffle by album feature to the touch!

Yeah, I had the same problem too with my iPhone 3G trying to sync my smart-playlists. (Specifically, my smart-playlists weren't syncing the correct list of songs from my iTunes. It would show a totally different list of songs on my iPhone, although the list in iTunes was correct.)
I went to the apple store yesterday with the same problem. the apple store genius told me me edit the smart-playlist and uncheck the box that says "live updating" (although this disable's iTunes from automatically updating the playlist according to the rules you set for it, say if I play a song iTunes will add it to my "recently played" smart-playlist, however it WILL update the smart-playist to what you have on your iTunes). To have the playlist update itself automatically again, just go back and click "live updating" to turn it back on.
I know it seems like a pain, but I'm guessing this is a problem with iTunes 9.0.1 Hopefully someone at Apple will recognize this problem and hopefully develop and fix. Good luck!

  • Smart Playlist with certain criteria not syncing

So this is an issue that has haunted me for months now. I thought it may be a problem with my iPhone 4 in particular, but now I have an iPhone 5s with the same issue.
So I have a couple of smart playlists on my iTunes. One of them in particular is for Recently Added Singles. When I add new music to my iTunes, if it is a single or a new individual track, I want these tracks to populate my smart playlist. When the album that the single appears on is finally released and I get it, I don't want these albums, including the tracks that were singles, to populate the recently added singles smart playlist as I instead add the entire album to a different playlist all together. The only way I could figure a way around these full albums populating my singles playlist was to add a disc number of '1' to all tracks in a full album, just leaving singles without a disc number and add a rule to my smart playlist that would only populate tracks with a disc number of less than 1. The playlist appears fine in iTunes, but the playlist is empty on my phone.
When I sync the playlist and you watch it adding tracks on the phone, you can see the tracks being added, but as soon as the sync is finished, the playlist is empty. Experimenting a little further, I changed the rule to populate the smart playlist with tracks with a disc number that is '1' only. iTunes populates and appears correctly, but when I sync the playlist, my phone it appears to ignore the rule completely and just abides by the other rules I have on the smart playlist, which are 'date added in the last 12 weeks' and 'media kind is music,' which includes, as you'd expect, all music added in the last 12 weeks, and not the intended, all music added in the last 12 weeks with a disc number of 1.
So does the iPhone ignore the disc number of tracks? I know that if disc numbers are used, the iPhone doesn't actually display or specifiy where one disc ends and the next begins, like it does on the new iTunes, but is this meta data not actually used by the iphone all together? Or does it handle it differently to iTunes?
It's not a major issue of course, it just bugs me because I sort my music quite particularly. The way I've been getting around it is by creating a smart playlist based on this smart playlist, naming one with 'iTunes,' and the one to sync to my phone with 'iPhone.'
I thought this just should be pointed out and reported so maybe it can be fixed in a update or something. It's quite a particular fault so maybe it hasn't come up before?
Anyways, all and help and advice welcome.

In another thread it was suggested to edit the Smart Playlist in iTunes for podcasts and uncheck Live Updating. This worked for me and my podcasts were again on my iPhone.
