Please take ALL my dukes but get me started!

Question

It's gotta do with setting the classpath...and yes, i have already been thru google and forums here...pls see all earlier failed attempts to my query on http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=54&thread=331803&tstart=15&trange=15 (Thread Name: wanna assign you ALL my Duke Dollars....)
This is what i do:
- Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced>Environment Variables
- Click on Path in the System Variables section
- Click Edit and add C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_01\bin AFTER %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\System;
- Next I go to DOS and get my C prompt to C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_01\bin
- I type javac helloworld.java and ENTER
- I get "javac is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"
So then I go back to Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced>Environment Variables
- This time I click on New in the "User Variables for Gaurav" section(that's me) - after all i am logged in as Gaurav on my XP machine!
- I type Path in Variable Name and C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_01\bin in Variable Value
- Save
- goto DOS
- type helloworld.java and get "javac is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"
BTW i have installed j2re-1_4_1_01-windows-i586 (only the JRE; no SDK...do i need it?) on a XP machine

hi gaurav!!!!!!!!!!
i've been getting the same error as u (tho my problem relates to some error during installation which prevents me accesening autoexec)
at c:\> (or wherever u have jdk)
check if ur classpath variable is aset or not
type echo %classpath%
it will echo the class path and u can correct it if wrong
i think the following shud solve ur problem tHO it is a very temporary solution
(at compilation)
C:\>SET CLASSPATH=C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_01\bin
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_01\bin>javac helloworld.java
if u use this then at run time)
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_01\bin>java -classpath<C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.1_01\bin\helloworld

(NOTE: U WILL LOOSE ALL THESE SETTING WHEN U CLOSE THE PROMPT WINDOW AND U WILL HAVE TO SET IT ANEW EACH TIME )
