Points cheating at the Playground forum

hi,
this might sound really silly, but, i just noticed that you could actually connive with someone and give each other points in the Playground forum.
while i know that it would be very easy to trace, and correct, and not that points are of any relevance here at this point in time, i'd like to think that this option shouldn't be available in the first place.
of course i could be wrong, in the sense that maybe this problem has already been noted and is being worked on, but i just wanted to say it out in the open all the same. =)
ryan.

Hi,
Actually one can do this in all forums, so I don't see how this can be prevented.
I think that SDN people are mature enough and 'play' it fair. The points aren't the main goal of this community to my feeling, but (trying) to help people and share information and knwoledge.

EP forum is the worst forum when it comes to people rewarding points. I wish somebody could moderate the EP forums.

    Hello Prakash,
You have company. I do not know the exact statistics, but the ABAP Programming Forum is not far behind. Of late I find a lot of newbies in there and most of them don't even return back to look at what answers they've got, forget about rewarding points. If they do return, I keep trying to coax them into doing so :-).
But there's always a trade-off between having the satisfaction of having cracked a tough problem and helping someone out and the disappointment of not getting the points for those answers which you have really spent effort trying to solve.
There's one thing that you might want to do -
    1. Since you're a seasoned user here, you will be knowing about the trend of the points. For example, there are some users who always reward points. you can have a Watch for the posts made by them and the chances are you'll get the points you deserve. You'll even strike a rapport with some of them, as I have in the ABAP Forum.
    2. There will be certain questions which you simply can't let go, because they are so ineresting. You may have never thought about a particular possibility which someone else is trying to explore. but since you do have the basics very string, you can really set off and come up with a good answer. In such cases, you may not really bother about the points - because the idea might prod you to write a whole weblog on that, which will give you the points anyways. But, such questions are rare to come by - at least from my experience with the ABAP Forum.
    3. And lastly there are a few questions (actually there are several in the ABAP Forum) which have been asked several times in the past and answered. The person asking the question is either too lazy to do a search / is very new around here. If you want to, then you can remind that user to first do a search. These questions do not add value to the content on SDN. So <i>ideally</i>, we shouldn't be expecting to get any points for them. If the user remembers to give you the points, then it's okay, otherwise, I don't think it's a good idea to insist the user to give the points (this is of course, my personal opinion).
    4. Anyways, thanks to the increasing awareness about SDN among the developer community, there are more and more people who are getting conversant with new stuff. And these users will be able to solve questions which an experienced guy might consider very trivial - the reason, this guy had also learnt that answer very recently and answering the questions reinforces the concept. And he wouldn't mind the points too much :-). Hopefully, there'll always be such users  - which will ensure that every question gets answered regardless of whether the user asking the question is the kind who rewards points or not.
Hmmm... That was a bit too long, wasn't it ? I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone :-). Let me know what you think.
    Regards,
    Anand Mandalika.

  • My user points in the GB forum dropped from 970 to 735?

I was listed in the GB forums "Top Users In Category" with 930 points. Then today suddenly it dropped to 735 points. What happened to my hard earned points?

Nobody wants you to leave. I have noticed that the harder I work in a thread the less likely I am to get any points out of it. My motivation is helping where I can and investigating something if I don't know it so I can learn more myself.
I don't think the Top Users is really a good place to look at. I don't know how those numbers work. I noticed that you have some old posts that are no longer online. I think that is where those points went. I think it calculates the number of points you have online and if your posts get moved offline (for whatever reason, however that works) you lose category points. That would be a good thing as old users stop participating and new people come on. If someone hasn't logged on for 2 years, why should they keep their top ranking?
Another problem with "Top Users" is that it is where you are essentially competing with others. No matter how hard you work, there could be someone who you could never reach. I used to be #1 in Software Development but got knocked down by RayNewbie. At least he has 4000 points till to earn before he gets level 4. Of course, at his rate of point accumulation, he'll be there in 18 months. (No - I'm not kidding)
My suggestion is to expand out from Garageband a bit into some other forums where you feel comfortable. If you see a question with an easy answer, fire it off. The points alone isn't a good reason to participate. You need to find something else to get out of it for yourself.

    Hi,
I have had bt broadband opt3 for almost 3 months now and have always had a healthy 9mb+ connection, however have noticed it being very slow in the evening when I come home from work, I checked the speed last nite as iplayer was constantly freezing and was getting 1mb . A bit upset by this as I got bt broadband to play my ps3 online and to get faster speeds on my laptop, and I use these services mostly at nite.
I checked my speed this morning and was getting 11mb, is this normal or am I being capped I cant believe Id be going over my download limit. Can someone from bt get back to me on this?
    Thanks
    John

Yes Alison, I think I can see that now. I wouldnt mind if broadband was a bit slower at peak times, I know thats normal, but when I'm only getting 1mb when my max is 14mb, I just dont feel I'm getting what I pay for. And when it gets to the point where I cant watch iplayer without it stuttering everywhere and online games lagging on the ps3, this is certainly not what I'm paying for.
I was hoping one of the mods here would help me and check my line and see if there is any cap on the line and get it removed.
I really dont wanna phone India, I deal with them 5 days a week as is...
Think I will just send one of the mods an email to check my line and see if it is being capped or if somethings wrong.

You will never get decent speeds on Iplayer,
BT limit it because they want you to subscribe to their precious BT Vision service.
The only way you are guaranteed to get decent speeds on BT is to subscibe to BT Vision and also unlimited broadband.
Then you will get priority when you stream TV at your exchange unlike fighting it out with all the other broadband users as you currently are for the available bandwith.the more over subscribed your local exchange the worse it is

    Hi John,
I can take a look at the network side of things for you, to see if there is anything I can do to help improve your speed during peak periods. Please could you drop me an email with your BT account details? Please also include a link to this thread. It would also be very helpful if you could run a few speed tests using www.speedtester.bt.com when you feel your Broadband is running slow. I can then check those results from here.
    Thanks

Well John i'll tell you what it is...
First of all welcome to BT and I hope you'll enjoy 18months of pain and suffer.
    OK here it goes....
If you look at your contract, find a rule that says Fair Usage Policy.
Basically it states that BT will cap anyone that is abusing their lines.
However, it does not say what are the limits after which you are going to be capped for how long and at what times. (I'll come back to this later and explain)
If you ring 08007076044 I'm sure that someone will confirm my theory. As constant 1MBit between 6PM till 11/12 PM is actually FUP applied on to your account.
Ok time to explain my frustration about FUP.
Since I signed my contract with "lovely" BT for constant 4 months I had similar issue but it took me even longer to find out what is going on and how to deal with this problem (thanks to google).
FUP team states that if you exceed 100GB in a month (everyone will admit that these days 100GB is nothing when a single game for PS3/XBox360/PC sometimes is more than 5GB and 1080p film is about 12GB) will cap you for a month at peak times to outstanding and superfast 1Mbit (about 130-150KB/s).
I'be been watching my download and for few months never exceeded that 100GB in a month. Been ringing FUP team to verify when suddenly they told me that from (cant remember exactly) March FUP will apply only to accounts that are using Torrents and other P2P.
you won't believe how happy I was hearing that.... So i've started to download and next month guess what.... 1Mbit connection.
Really mad rang FUP team and asked them what on earth is going on. They confirmed that its only P2P and I've explained them that I only use Youtube, BBC iPlayer, Rapidshare, Steam and XBox Live, Beatport (just don't understand how ppl can use torrents and other P2P as they are just way to slow). So they were happy to take the cap off my broadband connection.
Next month same issue solved exactly the same way.
After that for consecutive few months I had no problem whatsoever until September where FUP Team said that there is no such thing and FUP applies to everyone.
So just want to say that BT is rubbish that can't keep their word.
I went to one of the sales advisor in the shopping centre and asked him how FUP works as it does not say in the contract "how, when, who and what".
So he said that policy is applied based on amount of files downloaded within that 100GB. So if I download e.g. 3x 50GB (although its 150GB altogether) files I wont be affected but 100x 1GB will put a cap on me.
I've been so curious if what he said was right and started to download 2x 60GB and guess what... Got frigging FUP placed on my account!!!.
    I've got 2months left with them and will be extremely happy to cancel my contract, moreover, I will do everything in my power to sue them under EU Consumer Rights Law (that states that contract should be clear and fair to both sides) as Fair Usage Policy is one of those things that allows BT to do anything they want to their customers;
    1. No clear explanation of what FUP is.
    2. Does not states the amount of downloaded data required to have cap on the acount
    3. Does not states for how long it will be applied
    4. Does not states when it will be applied
If you look at e.g. Virgin Broadband everything is clearly written in nice and understandable way. It warns you at what times FUP will be applied under what circumstances and for how long. Isn't it what we all want to know??

@Mateusz I think I maybe a victim of this outragous stint BT have done. I have 2 XBOX 360's running on XBOX Live, 2 Desktop PCs connected to the web constantly, and 3 laptops, we have a torrent sharing running and World Of Warcraft on one of the PCs. All of this is shared across a 6 person family. How can a family where two members goto to college and university do their college ork, download application such as VB.net do their coursework and revise without the hassle of a **** connection. Seriously BT get your ******* head outta your **** and stop this ********, we are customers, we pay for what we are offered. When I signed up several years ago I could download everything on the net woithout infracions on my line being set in motion. You altered my contract without telling me. You will lose custom from this. Also you have ****** my wireless

You lot are lucky, We wish we could be capped to 1mbit. Our IP profile is capped to 500kbit because BT say the line isn't good enough for anything more. We are paying for option3 up to 8mbit and BT have said we must continue to pay for it for the remainder of the contract, or buy ourselves out of it early, the reason they give.... Up to 8mbit means up to 8mbit. If you dont get 8mbit then TOUGH LUCK SUCKERS!!
The outcome? We feel like we've been turned over by a dodgey second hand car salesman called BT. The internet deal he flogged us was a dog, a ringer, it wasn't cosher and certainly had a false MOT certificate.

    Hi Amanda,
Why have you joined BT Option 3 when you can not get what BT can offer?
No pun intended but you are a bit of a sucker for paying high prices where other suppliers are cheaper and can provide what your line can support.

we moved house last october to this one, the connection was rubbish from the get-go, BT said the router was broken and we needed a new one, we said OK. That "OK" meant that we had entered into a new contract for option 3 same as out old one. The router wasn't broken, the new one didnt fix or improve the problem, we have since asked for a price reduction or compensation and been told "no". we are in contract and can pay to buy ourselves out of it if we like but otherwise we have to pay for option 3 and recieve fixed rate 500kb.

    Hi Amanda,
I think you'll find that the Hold To Term rules have changed. BT are now unable to charge you for the account if you no longer require it. It is against OFCOM's rulings for a company to make more money out of you as a leaving customer than an existing one. However, You will need to pay for the connection charge (if that has not expired it's original differed contract) which is £40. A cancellation fee of £25 if you are simply cancelling and not migrating using a MAC key and for any hardware. The Routers are advertised at £88 and i would suggest that if they believed on to be faulty then that would be replaced under guarantee and not be put on a differed basis. I would check exactly what they say the are charging you and query this through OFCOM. http://www.ofcom.org.uk/

Months of impecable service form BT as an option 3 customer. (I've even recommended BT to people)
    but
For the past 2 weeks peak traffic has murdered my connection.
I can get 14mbit off peak, and it used to drop to about 7-9 at peak times.
Now its down to 1-2mbit at peak times. (no i haven't breached FUP as I check my btinternet inbox for the 80GB warning)
I think its resonable to experience drop off but 90%!!!
BT advertising says fast speeds at peak times. less than 2mbit is not fast. (that the governments minimum standard!!!)
I don't know how to procede because when I'm experiencing these issues if I ring up I will end up waiting so long to speak to someone (because its peak time) the concection wiill be better again.
I can think of no recourse other than to approach trading standards...
Guarnetee me 5mbit at peak times (enough to stream HD iplayer) and I'd be happy
That is what BT vision customers are in essence are getting + what ever their PC is using.
Fair usage? what about Fair Supply.

  • What's wrong with the new forum design.

Thought I'd kick off the list here.
    1. O.P. can award a correct answer to themselves.
    2. Status stays hidden unless checked, making it hard on both newbies and those trying to help them
    3. No advanced search (that I can find) I've given up even trying to look, and users aren't even aware of it
    4. Difficult to see what you have or haven't replied to
    5. Can't see very far back in the threads
    6. Huge waste of space on useless quote bubbles
    7. Trying to edit your own settings takes you round in circles
    8. Where is the forum how-to and guide?
    9. Absurd to ask users to search without a suggested list to work from, the Pages iPad users are constantly landing in the wrong forum
    10. I hate the default of sending email advisories and Safari messages of answers in the forum. My Mail Inbox is inundated and I am getting constant pop-ups interrupting my work on my Mac.
…many more but I'd like to let others add to the list
BTW I give 2 thumbs up to the improved post formatting options, but that was a long overdue catch up to other forums.

Don't have time to answer all of this, but here's a start...
    1. O.P. can award a correct answer to themselves.
Useful when they've come up with the correct answer themselves. (OPs can't award themselves points, though.)

  • Premiere CS3: How can you encode xml cue point data in the chapter section of a marker for FlashVid?

    Hi there,
I'm a total newb to this forum, so hello adobe premiere community! I'm perplexed by Adobes documentation on Premiere (and I'm sure I'm not the first ) anyway on the live documents page below:
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/3.0/help.html?content=WS9390BED7-9466-46ea-A0E A-3240F1AFC36C.html
    it states that:
“The cue point data in the Chapter field of a sequence marker in Adobe Premiere Pro will be encoded as Flash XML. For the XML protocol required, see Flash Help.”
Which is great…except this information doesn’t exist seemingly in either the Premiere documentation or Flash either for that matter, but as I’m interested in working with the chapter/marker area in Premiere – should I really be told to go off and search the documentation for another application, probably not!  What would have been useful would have been a code snippet saying you do it like this, but of course, that would make things too easy!
Basically, I understand that in After FX you can add Flash marker information specifically for interpretation when exporting to Flash Video (i.e. name, type and parameters etc) and it suggests that you can do the same above in Premiere CS3 using some kind of concatenated string in the chapter area…it just doesn’t tell you how anywhere seemingly – WHY ADOBE!
Currently when I export markers as cue points based on the advice in the page above, anything I put in the chapter section to force Premiere to create a cue point is converted to a string, which becomes the cue point ‘name’.
This cue point name is then automatically appended to the ‘time’ the marker was inserted at and is always encoded as type ‘navigation’, with no obvious means of adding ‘parameters’ into the equation.
So (finally) does anyone know if you can insert this information into the chapter area for correct interpretation by flash (i.e. thus allowing you to choose between either 'navigation' or 'event' types, and pass as many 'parameters' as you wish etc) or are you just limited to supplying a name, and it being automatically set to the navigation type with no parameters?
I’m sorry for this long essay but at least the issue is well defined for you to answer, honestly any help you can provide what so ever would really be most appreciated!
    Best regards,
    Kat
PS – I have utterly no knowledge of XML either just in case you were wondering – and my only interest in XML is getting this basic information encoded into the FLV file from Premiere Pro CS3! Please help, pretty please with daisy’s!!!

    Hi dradeke,
Thanks for your reply, which is indeed useful as clearly Adobe have made this task easier and less obscure in CS4 by adding simple interface functionality, however I'm stuck with using CS3 for the moment.  Its not majorly a problem as the video material in question can be exported uncompressed then setup with cue points using the Flash encoder as an alternative (i.e. or even After FX CS3 also) which both provide the same features as Premiere CS4 seemingly. It is just that it would be much easier to be able to drop in simple markers whilst working with Premiere CS3, as this is what we are going to be using primarily, I just wondered if anyone knew how to invoke this in CS3 - its possible you can't, the documentation is vague at best!
However I really appreciate your response and help, thanks

  • How do I find the MAC address of a CLIENT ACCESS POINT created from the FILE SERVICES ROLE

I have several Client Access Points created within the clustered File Services Role.  The only way I seem to be able to determine the MAC address of each of these, is by visiting the DHCP server.
Does anyone know if there is a way of reporting on this from the server (active node) itself?  I have tried ipconfig all, checked the properties of the CAP in the FCS console etc.

As far as I know there have no original option for query all the CAP MAC address, may you can create a PowerShell command then filter the configuration result, you can ask

  • Is The New Forum Design In Transition?

I've got to say, the forum just feels broken as it is.
And I'm not just talking about little formatting glitches needing cleaning up.  I'm talking about the fairly significant number of features that have gone missing, such as listing who a reply is to, listing the post and points counts, etc.
    More broken than it did.
    My question is this:
Is what we see what we're going to get, or are we in transition to something better?

Thanks, Dave - I guess.  It's the terminology that bothers me I think...  This is not just a "re-skin".
"Skin" implies colors, shapes, sizes - but not functionality.
This recent change is therefore more than a "re-skin" of the old forum.  I have to say, I don't mind the colors and layout - it's usable.  And I understand the need for modernization, though I didn't see a real need to change the look before getting the functionality working better.
We seem to have entered the era of UI simplification.  Not long ago someone somewhere came up with the term "cognitive overload", which always seemed like a backhanded way of saying "most folks are too stupid to deal with a lot of stuff on the screen at once", and so everyone began simplifying their user interfaces.  Hell, Microsoft even stopped making their Windows OS actually do windows.  Kind of a slap in the face to people who yearn for more and bigger monitors just so they can get more stuff up there for use "at a glance".
I urge everyone to think of the derivation of Albert Einstein's immortal comment:
"Make everything as simple as possible, but no simpler."

  • New ATA channel with an exclamation point appear in the device manager at each start (when no new device has been installed)

    Good morning,
My desktop, (Win7 64, AMD cpu/ Gigabyte mother board) , started to generate strange problems such as my laser usb printer not reachable even after disinstal/reinstall.
I took a look in the device manager, and found 2 ATA channel with an exclamation point, "drivers not found'. I also found a USB universal controller with the same exclamation point and the same error.
I changed nothing in terms of Bios since the machine was built (AHCI, Raid not active). The main drive is a SSD on primary SATA port, classic drive on the second port.
I deleted the 3 items, the printer started to work again.  They reappeared after the next reboot.
Weird thing: it looks like the problems appeared after connecting/disconnecting a Nikon camera to one of the usb port (identified as a mass storage device).
I ran multiple scans (root) in case a virus would have generated the problem, negative.
Last point (can't tell if it's related or not), my browsers started crashing randomly.
    Thank you

    Hi,
I'd ask your question in the Windows forums here:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows
Or perhaps over in the Win7 IT Pro forum here, since you seem fairly comfortable:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-us/home?category=w7itpro&filter=alltypes&sort=lastpostdesc
This forum is meant for reporting issues with the forums themselves, not product support.
    Good luck.

Visual Studio 2013 Setup and Installation gets stuck at system restore point. what are the issues?, help me out ASAP

    Hello nitinrathod29,
There are some possible fixes for this issue.
    Please check the following thread:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/47bc6990-00f2-4d85-b3f8-9de03c637f43/visual-studio-2013-update-2rc-stucks-on-creating-system-restore?forum=vssetup

    So here are them:
    1. Check if you have any software which may prevent the installer from running. For example, Windows Defender or any other software which may restrict your permissions.
    2. Just start the computer.
    3. Run the setup as admin.
    4. Check your UAC permissions.
    Best regards,
    Barry

  • Points discussion from the 2006 switchover

Some history in this thread found in the sidebar with this post from mhunter. In the "what else is new" category.
But, it is frustrating to have this current system in place.
Essentially, the new forums feel more like Apple found a way to get people to compete for points and take over their support work.
By jumping through hoops, and competing to answer a post first, we lost the "discussions" aspect, and became an unpaid support staff.

Give it a break.  You're wasting your time and ours with this.  Go out and help somebody.  Or give up.  Bringing this up ad nauseum is useless.  Seriously, this horse has been dead for years.  Now it's a mummy.
I don't think so. It is only a matter of time before someone posts a thread complaining about the current "new site". It is just like MacOS X - the complaints won't stop until there is something new to complain about.
I think having that thread bookmarked is a good idea. Someone should dig up a similar set of threads for Snow Leopard, Leopard, and Tiger. Now those would be handy!
