Poor 2D-Performance in Angband with X11 and radeon [SOLVED]

Hello,
I switched from catalyst to the open source radeon driver with kernel 3.11 the first time, having an HD 6950. When I tryed to play Angband (which I really like) the performance was very poor and laggy. So I edited my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf just like it says in the wiki using glamor:
Section "Module"
Load "dri2"
Load "glamor-egl"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Radeon"
Driver "radeon"
Option "AccelMethod" "glamor"
EndSection
That did the trick. But now that I did a fresh install of Arch it's not working anymore. Even with the glamor settings the game is slow and laggy. I've also tried EXA making it look like this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Radeon"
Driver "radeon"
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Option "EXAVSync" "on"
EndSection
Using EXA doesn't change anything either. The game runs fine in text-mode but with X11 it's laggy.
What I've tried however is this (without any luck):
- mesa-git 10.1 from AUR
- glamor-egl-git from AUR
Am I missing something here? I'd really appreciate it if you have an idea as to why these settings don't seem to take an effect on Angband anymore.

Hi,
it looks like there has been a change in the naming convention. In order to have the glamor module loaded correctly you must not write:
Load "glamor-egl"
but
Load "glamoregl"
The Wiki entry has been changed accordingly. Now it's happily playing Angband for me :-)

  • Poor keynote performance when presenting with an MBP 2.16

    Hi,
I've been using Keynote extensively to make scientific presentations ever since it came out, first on a Powerbook G4 and then recently on an MBP 2.16. One of the reasons I got a new MacBook Pro was in fact to improve (= speed up, smooth) animations when presenting: This was acceptable on the Powerbook, but choppy on occasions, and I like my presentations to be perfect. I naturally expected a considerable improvement on the MBP.
To my dismay, it's just the reverse: Performance is in fact absolutely horrible when presenting (that is, with the computer connected via the DVI-to-VGA connector to a projector; using the projector as a second screen): Quicktime movies embedded in the presentation are choppy, slide transitions that playted fine before now often exhibit hiccups (e.g., page flip systematically hiccups), several somewhat complex animations (such as "spinning" a large image") totally fail (instead of the cool spinning, I now get a long pause followed by the all-at-once appearance of the image!) ; it sometimes takes ages (4-5 seconds) long to "build" the next slide, leading to confusion as to whether you have requested the next slide to be displayed or not and the ensuing chaos as you make additional keypresses &c.
Why is this? I've considered possibilites such as I am running Keynote in Rosetta (not the case), I don't have the correct OpenGL drivers after a recent upgrade snafu (the drivers are the correct version), &c. &c. Keep in mind too that this is a 1G trouble-free 2 months old machine with 10.4.7 and nothing too exotic on it. How can a faster machine with loads more VRAM run Keynote so poorly, and disappointgly much less well than my two-year-old PB G4???
    Any tips or insights appreciated.
    -- axel c.

Thanks for your message. I've never had any trouble working with Keynote and testing out presentations on the MBP's own screen; only when projecting and displaying the presentation itself on a secondary screen. I've just ordered an extra G of RAM hoping this would perhaps help alleviate the issues, but your experience (with your 2G machine) suggests it won't change much.
Unfortunately I deleted the demo version right away, but the fact that it works properly suggests some issue with preferences, caches or the like perhaps?
We're not progressing much on this problem.

  • Poor Battery Performance on MacBook With Snow Leopard

Upon installing Snow on my MacBook Unibody, my battery performance has degraded from approximately 5 hours on a full charge to now less than 2.5 hours. Has anyone else experienced such? I am set up for maximum power saving in battery mode and mainly surf the web and use Pages on occasion while on battery mode. Upon allowing the battery to drain, it indeed lasted only 2.5 hours with just web surfing. I tried a few startups and repaired disk permissions, yet the menu continued to show 2.5 hours on a full charge. Advice anyone?

Snow Leopard has been a power hog so far. I have the same settings and applications, etc. as with running just Leopard. I went from 5-7 hours on my black MacBook (that's with running videos, etc.) to now just barely 2 hours.
I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro a couple of days ago and it only lasts a few hours. Nowhere near the boost they advertise.
Either my old Black MacBook just had an awesome battery or the new software upgrade ***** juice. I am getting ready to wipe the upgrade. I was satisfied with Leopard and Tiger. I rather have all day performance than having to drag the cord out everywhere like you do with a PC. I expect a PC to suck juice and give me only 45min. battery, but not my MacBook.

  • Trouble with x11 and vpn

I can't say for sure when this started but it was first noticed today. I have OS X setup to launch X11 on startup, and with an export DISPLAY in .profile I have, until now, successfully launched x11 programs from Terminal. I also use gimp.app and that has also worked successfully until now. I can't say when this problem first appeared though because I don't make use of X11 applications on a daily basis.
Anyway, today I started getting this
Xlib: connection to ".0" refused by server
    Xlib: No protocol specified
    X server not responding
    : ".0"
After playing about a bit I discovered the X11 server works fine until I connected to a VPN server previously defined in Internet Connect. Now I'm pretty sure this never caused a problem in the past as I typically spend the working day connected to this VPN server. For some reason though, once I connect via VPN I can no longer launch X11 applications as they can't connect to the X11 server.
Does anybody know what may have caused this?

No longer relevant. Just want it removed from the unresolved list.

  • Poor network performance on wired ethernet port and airport

I'm using Leopard 10.5.1 on a home network comprised of a new, fully up-to-date (firmware wise) D-link wireless router and a couple ethernet hubs. I initially had problems because of old router firmware, but buying the new router and making sure firmware was up-to-date seems to have solved the connection problems. What I now experience is that whichever network cennection I am using, wireless or wired ethernet port, will slow down so slow that it's impossible to get any web content, upload files to my local server, or sent emails with any kind of attachment. Turning off the connection I am using, either wired ethernet or airport, and switching to the other solves the problem for a short time, usually a couple days or so. Then that connection with slow down and I have to switch back - again solving the problem. So to keep my network connection alive, I have to keep switching back and forth between the wired ethernet and the airport connection.
The rest of my network consists of several Windows machines including a Windows 2000 server. None of these devices ever have any problems with network access.
I've tried playing with the advanced settings with no luck. Does anyone know of a specific setting that might be the culprit?

    Hi ,
Maybe you can try to disable checksum offloading and jumbo frames on the Physical NIC (ESX platform) to check result .

  • Video performe horribley both with QT and youtube, beach ball ****.

I have no idea why but since the last update all my QT movies play back about only 4 secs of video, then i hear sound but the picture gets stuck, then on YouTube i get nothing but the beach-ball, i have to force quit firefox etc etc
    Anyone else experiencing this?
I have over 120GB free on my drive, a external 750GB media drive for iPhoto docs and a 320GB Sata to USB 2.5" drive, all worked perfect until the last update.

    i have some problems too.
Expecially for some youtube videos or someother flash/director streaming files.
Actually Director/Shockware plugin works horrible on new Mac intel models.
I try to install also version 10 of this plug in (it's a beta) but nothing new.
For some videos it's possible to watch them but it's not possible to forward the timeline or put it in full screen mode. this occurs very rarely on YouTube but very often on other streaming video sites.
The only remedy if you need to watch them is restarting Safari or Firefox under Rosetta, doing so flash/director plugins are loaded in PPC instead of Intel.
It's not funny but it works.
    only a note:
as i remember , CNN uses Windows Media Video codecs in their streams so it's better you install
WindowsMedia component (it's free) from Microsoft Mac site (www.mactopia.com or microsoft.com/mac)

  • Screen tearing on video playback with mplayer and radeon driver

I use a old Radeon 9200 video card with the open source radeon driver, and after I configured the radeon driver to fix the screen tearing, it still has screen tearing

    Option "RenderAccel" "on"
    Option "AccelDFS" "on"
    Option "AGPMode" "4"
    Option "ColorTiling" "on"
    Option "AGPFastWrite" "yes"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection
    and this is the ~/.mplayer/conf:
    vo=xv
    ao=alsa
    mixer-channel=Master
    nolirc=yes
    nojoystick=yes
    font=Arial
    subcp=latin2

and I know that this video card is capable of playback without screen tearing, because if I boot windows xp and open any video file with VLC, there is no screen tearing

    Option "XV_CRTC" "auto"
    Option "XV_BICUBIC" "false"

I'm glad with the video quality, however, I do experience little tearing sometimes, especially in the scenes involving panning.
The XV_VSYNC option is supposed to eliminate tearing (due to the radeon manual), but it is ignored if KMS is enabled. Try disabling KMS if you don't mind some performance reduction. The Radeon driver generally has some annoying bugs and glitches in KMS mode.

  • Multi GPU use with Nvidia and Radeon Card combined possible?

I know it's unlikely but does CC support the combined use of Nvidia and AMD graphics cards, mercury engine, cuda / opencl / multi GPU feature wise?
There's a lack of performance currently; especially when color grading. So we're gonna have to upgrade our macpro.
    Current Setup:
    Mac OS X Lion
    3,33GHz 6-Core INTEL Xeon
    24GB 1333MHz DDR 3 RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5870
    Nvidia Quadro 4000
    SSD Raid internal
    SATA HDDs external
What's a good / better setup especially for color grading in Premiere (might switch over to SpeedGrade CC soon)?
We're gonna replace the Radeon HD 5870. Should we buy replace it with a NVIDIA Quadro K 5000 or a Radeon 7950 Mac Edition?
    Thanks in advance!

Get the K5000 if you need 10bit color preview. If you dont get the 680GTX Mac edition.

    Hi WegoMac-
No, I used the 9800 for quite some time before I upgraded the PSU. What prompted the PSU upgrade, was the addition of several other devices, and the degradation of power under load, due to heat.
With only the 9800, the AGP 237W PSU will still provide enough power. With a single processor upgrade, up to 2 harddrives, and the 9800, the stock PSU will still keep up. Anything beyond this, and you will be taxing the PSU.
As I mentioned before, it is the heat that really gets the PSU. As temperature increases inside the tower, the hot air is removed through the PSU. This, in turn, reduces the ability of the PSU to cool itself- using +hot air+ for cooling. As temperature increases, a PSUs ability to produce reliable power decreases. Eventually, components will be power starved, and the system freezes.
If reducing heat is something that you care to address (recommended) installing a PCI slot fan can greatly aid the cooling of the tower/components, and help maintain a stable system. A fan such as this Thermaltake, exhausts to the exterior, is quiet, and will aid in cooling. Placed next to the 9800, will also help to remove the added heat produced by the 9800. Other system coolers are here.
One note- if you use another exaust fan over 30CFM, I recommend getting a higher CFM case fan (the 120mm) >82CFM.

  • Dual boot with WinXp and Arch-Solved

    Hi friends,
I was using windows boot loader to boot into arch instead of grub. I used this:
    dd if=/dev/hda7 of=arch.lnx bs=512 count=1
to get the first 512 bytes of the partition in which I installed arch and then added a line directing towards arch.lnx (moved to windows partition) in boot.ini. But now after reinstalling arch, when i do the same to get first 512 bytes of the partition, it generates a blank file and hence using that I'm not able to boot into arch. Grub is installed in this partition only. Any hints about this issue.
EDIT: I dont know what was the problem exactly, but after I reinstalled grub by "grub-install /dev/hda7" and then did the above command, it worked fine.

moderator comment: This is a question on Kubuntu installation but it seems to me OP specifically wants to know how to set up his partitions without harming Arch. As long as the discussion remains about Arch Linux this thread can stay. I'm going to have to move this from Installation to Newbie Corner.
Annorax wrote:I assure you that I am doing my own research. I am new to Linux and new to dual booting and was just looking for some pointers and a place to start reading.
Please see this. I advise you to read the links 2ManyDogs gave. You also need to give us more information about your partitions, such as what is mounted where. I suspect you only have primary partitions and will need to convert one into an extended partition.

  • Some problems with X11 after upgrading to Leopard - GIMP 2.2

GIMP 2.2 crashes on start and the details explain some versioning problem of X11 native libraries. It might be issue on GIMP side that expects differen binaries to be installed (and perhaps removed by Apple due to compatibility issue). I just wanted to point this to be expected.
GIMP 2.4 for Mac OS X is not official release yet. It is only realease candidate and it should come soon hopefully with X11 issue being resolved in Leopard.

I believe that there are some known issues with X11 and BSD "under the hood" with Leopard. Fink is also broken and my old Darwin X11 attempts to run but nothing happens.

  • I downloaded gimp+x11 and message says can't uninstall -help please

I downloaded gimp with X11 and want to uninstall it but an icon of a hard drive is in my sidebar under my mac hard drive icon  with  gimp X11 on it   and when I tried to drag it to the trash, a message popped up saying "can't = put it in trash because gimp cannot be uninstalled" . Please help me. I have an older version of adobe creative suite but wanted a simpler paint program to merge art and photos. I desperately want to uninstall gimp because it is not even as good as Tuxpaint which my granddaughter uses at school and which I realized has options of photo merging also and seems like a better designed program even if it is for kids. The only problem with Tuxpaint is enlarging its canvas or workspace window and I haven't yet found how to export it's images but my granddaughter loves it and will flip when she realizes she can load photos from her digital camera, I hope. My main problem though is getting rid of gimp.  Thank you for your help.

It sounds like you have a disk image mounted. If that's so, unmount it by clicking the eject icon that appears when you mouse over it in the Finder sidebar, then move the image file (something like "Gimp.dmg") to the Trash.

  • Poor performance with WebI and BW hierarchy drill-down...

    Hi
We are currently implementing a large HR solution with BW as backend
and WebI and Xcelcius as frontend. As part of this we are experiencing
very poor performance when doing drill-down in WebI on a BW hierarchy.
In general we are experiencing ok performance during selection of data
and traditional WebI filtering - however when using the BW hierarchy
for navigation within WebI, response times are significantly increasing.
The general solution setup are as follows:
    1) Business Content version of the personnel administration
infoprovider - 0PA_C01. The Infoprovider contains 30.000 records
    2) Multiprovider to act as semantic Data Mart layer in BW.
    3) Bex Query to act as Data Mart Query and metadata exchange for BOE.
All key figure restrictions and calculations are done in this Data Mart
    Query.
    4) Traditionel BO OLAP universe 1:1 mapped to Bex Data Mart query. No
calculations etc. are done in the universe.
    5) WebI report with limited objects included in the WebI query.
As we are aware that performance is an very subjective issues we have
created several case scenarios with different dataset sizes, various
filter criteria's and modeling techniques in BW.
Furthermore we have tried to apply various traditional BW performance
tuning techniques including aggregates, physical partitioning and pre-
calculation - all without any luck (pre-calculation doesn't seem to
work at all as WebI apparently isn't using the BW OLAP cache).
In general the best result we can get is with a completely stripped WebI report without any variables etc.
and a total dataset of 1000 records transferred to WebI. Even in this scenario we can't get
each navigational step (when using drill-down on Organizational Unit
hierarchy - 0ORGUNIT) to perform faster than minimum 15-20 seconds per.
    navigational step.
That is each navigational step takes 15-20 seconds
with only 1000 records in the WebI cache when using drill-down on org.
    unit hierachy !!.
Running the same Bex query from Bex Analyzer with a full dataset of
30.000 records on lowest level of detail returns a threshold of 1-2
seconds pr. navigational step thus eliminating that this should be a BW
    modeling issue.
As our productive scenario obviously involves a far larger dataset as
well as separate data from CATS and PT infoproviders we are very
worried if we will ever be able to utilize hierarchy drill-down from
    WebI ?.
The question is as such if there are any known performance issues
related to the use of BW hierarchy drill-down from WebI and if so are
there any ways to get around them ?.
As an alternative we are currently considering changing our reporting
strategy by creating several higher aggregated reports to avoid
hierarchy navigation at all. However we still need to support specific
division and their need to navigate the WebI dataset without
limitations which makes this issue critical.
Hope that you are able to help.
    Thanks in advance
    /Frank
Edited by: Mads Frank on Feb 1, 2010 9:41 PM

Hi Henry, thank you for your suggestions although i´m not agree with you that 20 seconds is pretty good for that navigation step. The same query executed with BEx Analyzer takes only 1-2 seconds to do the drill down.
    Actions
suppress unassigned nodes in RSH1: Magic!! This was the main problem!!
tick use structure elements in RSRT: Done it.
enable query stripping in WebI: Done it.
upgrade your BW to SP09: Has the SP09 some inprovements in relation to this point ?
use more runtime query filters. : Not possible. Very simple query.
    Others:
RSRT combination H-1-3-3-1 (Expand nodes/Permanent Cache BLOB)
Uncheck prelimirary Hierarchy presentation in Query. only selected.
Check "Use query drill" in webi properties.
Sorry for this mixed message but when i was answering i tryied what you suggest in relation with supress unassigned nodes and it works perfectly. This is what is cusing the bottleneck!! incredible...
    Thanks a lot

BTW I'm not using Compiz. Has anyone an idea what could happen? In Glxgears I'm achieving 1200fps, but working with GIMP is laggy-horror.

  • I have recently upgraded my ipad mini to iOS 6.0.2 and still have poor wifi performance. My 3rd generation ipad works great on the same network. I have done all the resets I can think of but nothing helps. I would not have purchased the mini had I known.

On the same wifi network, third generation ipad, iphone4s and MacBook Pro work just fine.  The ipad mini often can not connect with the mail server and seems to hang a long time trying to open a web page. Had I known the mini had this kind of difficulty on wifi, I would have reconsidered my purchase. I have tried resetting the network and renewing the lease on the mini in addition. To completing the most current iOS upgrade. Still poor wifi performance. Unacceptable, in my opinion.

Yes I tried this manyfold. But did not work.  Reading on, I took Tesserac's advice. Shut down router and computer.
Start router after 15 minutes and wait another 10 minutes before starting the computer.
Et voila.... everything is back in working order,
