Poor type resolution in InDesign

I have the latest MacBook with retina display - yet when working in InDesign the screen rendering of type is very poor/pixelated. The same type in a Word Doc is very sharp - any ideas on what's causing this and how it can be resolved.
Thanks : Les Jones

I wouldn't have all the sliders pointing to the end - set them to the middle - that can take up a lot of memory trying to display everything in High Resolution - which isn't really needed.
Your type might show up clearer if there's enough memory available to display it correctly.
The other thing to look at is under "Interface"  and change the Live Screen Drawing to "Delayed".
Might help.

  • Photo resolution in InDesign 6

I am just learning InDesign, but I'm pretty good in Photoshop. I want to design a form  on which we can display (on letttersize paper) our photo collection. The form will have various bits of information and, most importantly, the photo.
Is it possible to display the photo (usually smaller than the actual photo) such that I can link to the original at its 300 resolution in its original location in order to print it out for patrons.?
In general, how do you deal with resolution in InDesign?

Posts in the online help wind up in the forums as well. I answered the first one, so I'll lock this one.

  • Type problem with InDesign, especially CC.

Hi. I'm experiencing a type problem with InDesign, especially CC. When I open a type box, the cursor appears in the top right hand corner. I can correct that by selecting 'range left' but when I paste or type in my copy, the final period of each paragraph appears at the beginning of the last line. This is drivning me up the wall as I can find a way of correcting it.
Any ideas to solve this problem?
    Thanks

Are you using a MENA (Middle East North Africa, Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, …) version? Then restting woul not help.
If not, you have to create a new document with the same Paragraph, Character and Object Styles (name should be identical) and import them into the other document to overwrite these style oddities.
If you are working without styles? Create correct new styles and apply them.
I doubt that resetting preferences will change here anything as paragraph properties from any existing document will not be changed when working with new preferences.

Where is the vertical type tool in InDesign CC 2014???

Thanks. Yes, I had referred to that InDesign Secrets post before posting my question. Thus my question about table. Still dont know why my insert table command is greyed out. The stairstep method doesnt work with my narrow spine and decorative, non-monospace font, as explained in exchange here with Bob Levine. And downloading the CJK version for this single, simple task is just too much trouble. The individual text frames proved the fastest solution.

  • Why can't I get open type features to work properly with an open type font on InDesign CS5.5?

I installed a very complete set of styles of an opentype font with Font Book – Mac OS X 10.9.4 – but when I tried to format a sample text on InDesign CS5.5 I noticed that I could not use the opentype features on the Open Type menu as I usually do.
    Could anyone help me, please?

It's ffScala Sans, but has separate files for small caps, figures, etc.
I was trying to use small caps, lining figures and superscripts when I
noticed none of the OT features are available.

Try turning off Ligatures in your style.

I bought my mac mini today. I connected using the DisplayPort <-> VGA cable to my HP LP2065 monitor. I have been using this monitor for my Windows XP which used to give me 1600x1200 resolution.

I have used the same monitor with various version of Linux flavours. But normally I get it working after installing some NVIDIA drivers. Is there similar thing in Mac world?

  • Adobe Reader 9.3.4 causes poor screen resolution and unreadable pdf documents. Why?

When I open Reader (9.3.4) the screen resolution becomes very poor - like a color monitor from the early 80's - and text in pdf documents is highlighted black or some other random color, making it unreadable.  This has been the case since I upgraded from Reader 8 recently. Any ideas on how to fix this?

To those that tried to assist me with trying to get Reader to display
    correctly.  Thanks for your assistance.
I resolved the problem  by doing a backup of all my files, then formatting the hard drive and reinstalling all programs, from XP to Trend Micro, to Office 2003 and finally Reader 9.
The problem has gone and the speed and stability of my PC has been greatly improved.

  • Poor printing quality in InDesign CS4

    Hello,
In InDesign CS4, I've made a single-page print (page coverd with one photo).
This photo is a high-resolution image (300 ppi) and is linked with the document. (checked with preflight).
The print is made on a Xerox Phaser 7760. The result isn't sharp at all. I've printes the same picture started in PhotoShop with a fine result and a print from an HiRes-pdf of the same page. The result was ok as well. The page and the picture weren't colormanaged. I kept the outputprofile, linked at the original file (US Web coated). The files were printedd on a heavy card stock (uncoated). Any idea what went wrong?

Could be a couple of things.
You say the image is 300 ppi. At what size? The number that counts is effective resolution, or the resolution at the scaled dimensions, the ones you use to print. You 'll find effective ppi listed in the info or links panels.
Second, the default sending for image data when printing from InDesign is "optimized supbsampling" which is usually not that good. Chnage to "all" and see if that helps.

  • Why is a 1000 x 800 px at 144dpi resolution in InDesign in Webmode only 500 x 400px?

What i would like to do:
I would like to design a website for HiRes screens. So i need an image resolution of at least 144dpi.
When i import the picture to Indesign CC (2014) the picture is displayed wit only 500x400 px. When
i import the same picture at a resolution of 72dpi its displayed in 1000x800 px. But i need the 144dpi?
    HELP! :-/

Dpi/ppi is meaningless on the web, the only thing that matters is pixel dimensions. And your HiDpi images will need to be four times the size of regular images, that is, double pixel dimensions. You cannot do this without scripting, and the best tool around is probably Retina Images.
You will have to declare (regular image) dimensions for your images in the html, and have two versions of the image in your web folder. One regular image, let's say 500 x 400 (image.jpg), and one image at 1000 x 800 ([email protected]). Retina Images will then check the pixel density of the monitor, and serve the appropriate image. This way you dont' have to serve large images to monitors that don't need them. You can see it in use on my website, http://perberntsen.com
And InDesign is not the right tool for the job, you will need to use Dreamweaver.

  • The resolution of indesign is low (of the program itself)

1920x1080 is the resolution of my screen. It seems only indesign is in low resolution. Ilustrator just functions normally.
(the low reslution is not very clear on the screen-shot unfortunately)
Also when the program launches the loading icon of Indesign is very large in comparisment with for example the loading symbol of Illustrator....
    Any help?

Is 1920x1080 the native resolution of the display. My iMac native resolution is 2560x1440. I can run it at a lower resolution that will enlarge the interface, but the UI blurs because of the resampling. Here's native on the left and 1344x1008 on the right:

  • Imprted .pdf image - poor printout resolution

    Hi there,
I have a .pdf vector image which I imported into a large AW drawing which is 6 by 6 A4 pages in size. I enlarged the imported .pdf to spread across the full 6x6 pages. Being a vector image (there are no raster elements) it looks fantastic on the screen when you zoom right in - however when I tried printing out the first pages as a test, it was quite ragged and much lower resolution than being displayed on the screen.
Since the total image as 'rasterized' for printing will be much larger than the 2000x2000 maximum in AW paint, is there any other workaround I can use to keep it nice and sharp on printout? (I have read the workaround for photos - but this will not work in this instance)

AppleWorks changes the resolution of all graphics formats except PICT to 72 dpi. Try opening the PDF in Graphic Converter & saving as PICT & them inserting the PICT file into AppleWorks. Even though PICT files themselves are much larger than other files types in the Finder, the resulting AppleWorks file will be smaller just because PICT is AppleWorks' native format.
