Pop account randomly refuses connection

We setup a pop account that is used on multiple conputers at the same time. Now one computer gets randenly the message connection refused enter password.
Password in keychain is correct. Login settings are correct. User also uses à imap account and there are no problems with that.
Log is not helpfull.

POP3 is not suited for multiple connections. You cannot connect from multiple computers at the same time. It will take 10 minutes to time out and accept new connections.
You should use IMAP.

'Yello, first time Archer here. I got myself a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 and wanted to break away from the Ubuntusphere with it, and aside from a few naggles (I couldn't get magmakeys and automounting to work without a DE, but now I run Cinnamon so they're an issue for another day), everything works... except for some bizarre behavior with the wifi.
Seemingly at random whenever I try to initiate some internet activity (sudo pacman -S, opening a link in browser, git clone, fetching mail, etc) the action fails immediately, as if no internet connection was present. Trying it again usually succeeds, but sometimes it might require several tries. Nevertheless, NetworkManager never reports wireless as down, and neither do iwconfig or ip link.
My home network (WPA2-PSK) might be partially at fault, as this problem has not cropped up in any other wireless network I've connected to with this device... but Windows, Android and Ubuntu all work fine at home, so clearly there must be something I can do to make Arch play nice, too.
    Here's my breadcrumb trail:

The trail of that log looks suspicious as hell, but I don't know jack about, dmesg, so. The usual suspects (iwconfig wlp3s0 power off, disabling IPv6 in NetworkManager, trying Wicd and netcfg) did not help. Ideas?

Oh, right, dhcpcd is a dependency of netcfg, which I still had installed. Disregard that.
And I'm not sure if I'm using any of {dhcpcd, dhclient, static IP}. dhclient is a dependency of NetworkManager and I seem to recall reading that it uses it internally, but I haven't touched a single dhclient configuration file, and it doesn't show up in any of dmesg, systemctl, or ps aux. I certainly haven't set up a static IP.
Anyways, I stopped NetworkManager and executed those commands. wpa_supplicant blocked at "EAPOL: disable timer tick" until I executed "sudo dhclient wlp3s0" in a separate terminal, where it stayed for a little less than half a minute before apparently detaching to the background (visible in ps aux). After that, I got internet access, but it still has those hiccups and wpa_supplicant doesn't report anything when they happen. Here's the full log for completeness:

  • Builtin FTP, sharing only account, refuses connection.

Im trying to setup FTP sharing since the builtin afp is painfully slow.
The ftp setup works fine, allows normal users to connect and view/download content, but the sharing only accounts are refused, saying the user is not allowed to connect via FTP...??
Ive used a group called FTP and added 2 users, one sharing only, and one normal user.
The normal user works fine, but can navigate the whole file system, including system files, other harddrives and non-shared folders.
This is NOT ok, so i will have to use sharing only-account but first i have to get it to work...
Ive tryed connecting both tru finders connect to server and Transmit (ftp app).
Finder reports error -36 or unknown user, transmit reports "user shared may not use ftp".
everything else works fine but something is terribly wrong..
can anyone PLEASE help me troubleshoot?
both client and server-side are 10.5.1 client.
    Client: macbook c2d 2ghz 1gb ram
    server: quicksilver 867mhz 768mb ram

Thank you guys for some VERY enlightening answers
I think i got the hang of it
But that must mean that if i can create a shell with only the allowed acccess that i provide, i can prehaps make it auto-mount shared folders aswell?
Or is there prehaps a already builtin "profile" i can use just by selecting it in the shell-links?
if there would be an easy way of creating this, i would definitely think other users could benifit from this aswell
Since this is basicly a unix-fix, there must be similar needs, and prehaps complete solutions that would only need minor work to convert to mac-os?
The ftp-privs appears to need SEVERE work to work properly, since normal user has access to EVERYTHING on the server-machine and not only the sharepoints i see as a HUGE problem and MUST be solved ASAP!
I would imagine that the macosx builtin control isnt that specific so prehaps a ftp-share shell even could be more secure and easier maintained?
    So my question is two parts;
1: Is there the easy way out, ready made apps that can do this?
2: if not (or good alternatives) where could i search for other os solution?
I have no problems with adding more logins to the computer, but i would preferably not show them all at login (add other..-button or similar to loginscreen or not visible at all) since its my girlfriends work-computer (my harddrive-stash for my puny 80gb laptop, family and friends) i really need a fast but secure file-sharing..

  • Lost pop account connection

Old network consisted of ADSL modem/router to which airport base station , Phaser 740 and MDD G4 were connected using ethernet cabling. A G4 powerbook could access the internet through the airport but never the printer. No problems accessing emails to a pop account at work.
To solve the printing issue I've changed the network so that the modem/router now only connects to the base station. The base station ethernet port goes to a new router to which the MDD G4 and printer are also connected. Joy upon joy the powerbook can now access the priner as well (now all on the same sub network..thanks guys at the genius bar for solving this) but now I cannot access my pop account emails. Anyone help solve this?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Henry,
Apologies once again but I'm still having problems and hopefully you can help. I've narrowed the problem down to the following issue. The network is fine (a DSL-300T, a FS605 switch and, from the switch, a printer, the desktop Mac and the airport base station). If I leave the airport out of the network everything is fine: I can print and access the internet from my desktop. Howevere within a few minutes of connecting in the base station I loose the internet connection and get the message "217.42.**.* in use by 00.11.*.25.**:*, DHCP server 192.168.1.1'. Occassionally the second address alters: I think it is either the desktop or powerbook ethernet address.
I have as suggested unchecked the distribute IP address in the base station set up and have tried connecting through both the lan and wan ports. Makes no difference. My feeling is that it is something to do with the swich but what do I know?
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • Iphone POP accounts not connecting

All my mail accounts in my Mac/Mail application are working fine. But on my iphone, only my mac.com account is picking up mail and sending mail, the other pop accounts keep telling me it can not connect.

  • Cannot connect to my Hotmail POP account since recent upgrade.  Any help?

After installing an IOS upgrade last week I can not longer get my hotmail POP account to work.  Can anyone guide me?

  • Cannot send email in mail app. using POP account with Wi-Fi

I recently moved to an apartment that only has wireless internet access. Since moving I cannot send email using my POP account, although I can receive email. I was also not able to receive email using my .mac account, but I learned through this forum to change server port to 587 in .mac account and now I can send via .mac account in mail app. But I still cannot sent email with mail app. using my POP account. I changed no settings when I moved, and have never had this problem with cable. Any suggestions?

It all depends on the policy of whoever is the ISP at your new location and the method used by the outgoing (SMTP) server to determine whether you’re a legitimate user.
In an attempt to fight spam, many ISPs restrict the ability to send using an outgoing (SMTP) server not owned by them, usually by blocking port 25 for all traffic outside their own network, which means you cannot send with an SMTP server not owned by them if configured to use that port number. And it may happen the other way around as well, i.e. the outgoing server itself may look at the IP address you’re connecting from and refuse the connection if you’re outside its own network.
Something that often works is changing the outgoing server port to 587 (or whatever alternate port number the outgoing server listens to) instead of 25 and using some form of authentication in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings, but two conditions must be satisfied for this change to work: (1) the ISP must not block that port as well AND (2) the outgoing server in question must listen to that port and accept a form of authentication not based on the IP address you’re connecting from.
Independent mail service providers not tied to a particular ISP, such as .Mac and Gmail, do allow authenticated SMTP access on port 587, which is the reason changing the outgoing server port number solves the problem for them if the ISP doesn’t block that port as well.
The following article, for example, describes several ways to address this issue in the case of .Mac, but can be useful for other mail accounts as well (not just .Mac), and applies to all versions of Mac OS X (not just Mac OS X 10.4.2 and earlier as the article states):

  • My Mac Outlook 2011 Stopped Sending Emails for all POP Accounts from Different Providers

I've had this problem before, but this time I am truly dumbfounded. My Outlook 2011 has randomly stopped sending emails, but I can still receive them. This has happened a few times and I normally change the ports/SSL and I can get it to work. But now I am at a loss. I have several email accounts that I manage. One of which is GMAIL, using IMAP, and this is the only account that currently works find receiving and sending. My POP accounts, four of them, all cannot send emails. They can only receive. One of them is with GoDaddy, and the other three are with an Asian company. I can't find any help on this. I've upgraded Office to the latest version. I've even deleted the accounts and added them back in, and I still can't send email. I'm frankly getting exhausted and sick of this type of problem happening. I honestly use this program and my MacBook Air to send clients information...only to find out hours later that a mail never sent because it's been stuck in my <hidden> Outbox in Outlook 2011. This has hurt me now badly on several occassions. Please HELP!

All SMTP servers are set correctly as far as I can tell, the connection doctor says everything is fine, and I removed all my accounts to re-add them.  I added one and tried to send a message--stuck in the outbox--failed.  I added another account and deleted the first one and tried to send a message--stuck in the outbox--failed.  I'm pretty convinced the problem is with Mac's Mail client...I can send email from anywhere I've tried except for Mac's Mail client.  Thanks for the help.

  • I can't get online through firefox (this keeps coming up THE PROXY SERVER IS REFUSING CONNECTIONS) but can through internet explorer?

As I said in the question when I click on the firefox link on the desktop this is what comes up (THE PROXY SERVER IS REFUSING CONNECTIONS Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections) but I can get connected through Internet Explorer. I have uninstalled firefox and reinstalled firefox with no difference.

I tried all that stuff and none of it helped. I can't load any of the google applications in firefox now. They pop up with this screen.
    This Connection is Untrusted
You have asked Firefox to connect securely to mail.google.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.
Normally, when you try to connect securely, sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.
    What Should I Do?
If you usually connect to this site without problems, this error could mean that someone is trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.
mail.google.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because it was issued by an invalid CA certificate. (Error code: sec_error_inadequate_key_usage)
Now I tried a couple of other sites and they all seemed to work okay, and if necessary I could click understand the risks and still access the site, but no go with google. Considering I use my google account for my calendar and gmail a lot, I am highly disappointed with this new update. I hate using IE and really prefer to use Firefox.

  • Cannot send attachments in Mail using .mac account, pop account is fine!

Within my Mail.app, I have 2 accounts: one is a .mac account, the other a pop account.
When I send attachments (jpg always and sometimes pdf) with the .mac account, they do not get encoded properly and my recipients cannot view them -- or they can view, say, 10% of the photo.
When I send the same attachments with the pop account, and within the same Mail.app, I do NOT have this problem.
Furthermore, if I send the attachment from my .mac webmail, I do NOT have the problem.
Does Mail.app have a problem with attachments sent via IMAP accounts?
I have tried Repairing Permissions, deleting the outbox.mbx (and emptying the trash).
Does anyone have any other suggestions? This is driving me crazy.
I am running Mail 2.0.5 on Tiger 10.4.3
Thanks a lot in advance, Neil
Long live the sunflower iMac, iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hello Neil.
Does Mail.app have a problem with attachments sent via IMAP accounts?
    None that I'm aware of.
The Mail.app uses MIME 1.0 for message/attachment encoding (which is the internet standard) for all email accounts.
Is your POP account and the SMTP server used for the account provided by your ISP used for connecting to the internet?
If so, try selecting/using your ISP's SMTP server (the same SMTP server used to send mail via your ISP's POP account) to send mail via your .Mac account as a test.

  • How to Send Email on iPad 3G if you have a 3rd Party POP Account

After a nice chat with the helpful support guys at O2, it may be worth me telling everyone here who has:
    1. an iPad with Wifi and 3G
    2. a POP email account with another home broadband provider (as I do)
This is a long post, but it's all worthwhile stuff. As they say in the US, 'your mileage may vary' so I'm not guaranteeing this solution will work for you, but it was the only way I can get my iPad Wifi+3G to successfully send emails when at home and out and about. It ain't pretty, so let's hope it gets cleared up in OS 4 grin
    Before you begin, ensure that:
    1. Wifi is turned off
    2. You are in range of your 3G service.
    3. You have already set up your iPad to work at home using your Wifi router with your broadband provider's POP and SMTP servers.
What you must do. (Have iPad in landscape format to follow along)
    1. Tap the 'Settings' App on the Home screen
    2. Tap on 'Email Contacts and Calendars' option (on the left)
    3. In the panel on the right, tap on your POP email account, under 'Accounts'
    4. When the Account pane pops up, scroll down to 'Outgoing Mail Server'
    5. Tap on the server
    6. Tap 'Add Server...' under 'Other SMTP Servers' to add your carrier's SMTP server
    7. When the input pane appears type the carrier's smtp server, which may look like smtp.o2.co.uk or smtp.three.co.uk or whatever...
    8. tap 'Save'
    9. You will have to wait while iPad tries to use SSL. Eventually iPad will ask you to connect to the server without SSL.
    10. Tap 'yes' to try without SSL
    11. When iPad gets back to you, tap on the carrier's server in the 'Other SMTP Servers' list. (iPad goes back to the previous screen when the server is verified)
    12. A new panel will appear, showing the server settings. Leave these alone, except for turning the server to 'on'
    13. Tap 'Done' (top right corner)
    14. Now turn your isp's outgoing server off (tap on your primary server and tap on the 'off' on the switch on the settings panel for the server)
    15. Tap 'Done' at the top right and work your way back to the main settings screen
    16. Now you can test your email
    17. Turn iPad off. Not just 'off' but 'OFF'. Hold sleep/wake for a few seconds and slide the switch when asked to turn iPad OFF
    18. Turn iPad back on again (sorry but this OFF/on is essential)
    19. Tap on the Mail app
    20. Compose a test email
    21. Tap 'send'
Hopefully, after a few seconds of the little whirly thing rotating next to the 3G symbol, you'll hear a 'whoosh' and your email was sent.
What you must remember to do, when switching between Wifi and 3G:
In order for Wifi email and 3G email to live in harmony with iPad, iPad needs to be switched off between using one service or the other, and you will need to ensure that only the correct SMTP server is switched on.
    This is not pretty.
Unfortunately, the hopeful statement on the settings screen that indicates that iPad can use several SMTP servers, one after the other, does not work when you switch from Wifi to 3G and back. It seems that iPad Mail app suffers from hyperthymesia and gets confused very easily and has to have its hand held.
This is the only way I have managed to send emails from my POP account over Wifi and 3G on O2. Receiving email is fine with no need to turn iPad off and on.
Don't worry if you forget, and then get an odd message about 'rejected recipients'. Just switch from one SMTP server to the other and turn iPad OFF and on, then reopen the Mail app and the email should send fine.
    Mark

Most, if not all internet service providers block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network or not provided by the ISP being used for your internet connection at the time unless the SMTP server is authenticated. This restriction is part of an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain and when connected to a cellular internet network for internet access is no exception.
This has been in place and an issue for a long time - well before the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad were introduced that firmware update 4.0 can't do anything about.
I access two email accounts and both have an authenticated SMTP server. I've never had any problems sending with either account regardless the ISP being used for my internet connection with various wi-fi networks and when connected to AT&T's cellular network.
Most ISPs don't provide an authenticated SMTP server, but a number of other email account providers do. Apple does with a MobileMe account, and so does Google with a Gmail account to name only two.

  • How do I get my Gmail account to behave like a POP account???

Ok, I've been using gmail as a POP account on my Mac for a while. Just got my first iPhone (3Gs). I synced it and set it up and everything was hunky dory. Then I decided to try out IMAP so I made a new IMAP account for my Gmail and disabled the POP account in Mail and removed it from the iPhone. After trying that out I realised I prefer to use POP. So I deleted the IMAP account from both Mac and iPhone... But when syncing my old POP account it behaves like an IMAP account on the iPhone... It doesn't have the same settings as my other non-gmail POP accounts... and loads all the folders from gmail... I have disabled IMAP in my Gmail account too... Still the iPhone seems to refuse to add a gmail account as anything but IMAP? I've even restored my iPhone to no avail...
Now if I delete a mail on the phone it never gets to my computer and I wanna be able to delete stuff from the phone without affecting the computer... gah!
    Any suggestions?
< Edited by Host for language >

I gave in and am now using IMAP but I still find the behaviour a bit wierd...

  • I have 2 POP accounts and 2 IMAP accounts in Mail.....

I have 2 POP accounts and 2 IMAP accounts in Mail 6.2 (1499), how do I ensure they all leave messages on the server?
I was trying to check with my ISP why they were not sending me notice of my monthly bill. They said they were, and gave me the dates of when the missing ones were sent. They went to check my inbox so that they could re-send the offending messages and said there were no messages there! Hence my question, How do I make sure that messages are left on the server? I have looked in Mail/Preferences, and certainly in the POP accounts the Remove copy from Server is unchecked, on the IMAP accounts, there doesn't appear to be a means of leaving on the server, which, in essence, shouldn't worry me because they are different ISP addresses, (1 = icloud and the other is BT.) and only the one address of the POP account is the one the ISP is sending messages to me.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks

I have, indeed, checked with my ISP and they do accept imap accounts. So I followed religiously their instructions, published in their setting e mail information for Mountain Lion website. The instructions were quite simple, and choosing imap was as easy as setting POP mail. however, the net result was that I could never connect with the servers to do anything with the mail. I know they are set up correctly, but when it tried to send mail, after a while an error message came up saying that it couldn't connect and gave me the option of dealing with a "connection doctor" or some such system. This I clicked on and noted that there were an awful lot of servers that it was trying to connect to some of which had been removed when I removed the setup addresses. The ones I wanted were, in fact, showing as connected!! It was obviously checking on anything that had been used in setting a server name from way back when and suffering with a severe bout of indigestion!
I think what really needs to happen is to get iMAC/Mountain Lion to regurgitate all that rubbish which is no longer a requirement, since I am only using three addresses, one from icloud and two from my ISP. I do not need the clogging up from redundant server names, but it seems that the MAC hangs on to everything just in case I may want to go back to them rather than set them from afresh!! I am not feeling too confident in trying to set the address that originally showed the problem, my BT one, and since this morning, it is almost working 100%, I'll leave well alone and see if it settles down. (One step forward and nineteen backwards!!)
    Cheers
