Port Channel in Nexus

Hi All,
I have a scenario where I have two nexus 5596 as upstream and have vPC  in between. downstream is the server hooking to the upstrean both nexus  devices.
On Both the Nexus switch the port channel is down and the VPC is also  down. The physical interfaces are up and passing traffic to the server.
My understanding is if the server NIC's are teamed, even the switches should also have the portchannle to work properly.
But since portchannel and vpc both are down in both the switches
1. how the switch is passing traffic.
2. I checked the configs for portchannel formation on phy ports which looks good to me still po is down. Why?
3. I understand as port channel is down so vPC is down ( correct me if I am wrong).
I have attached the diagram & below are the logs for ur reference:
The output on Nexus5596 2 device is same as on Nexus5596 1

how many ports are you using in this port channel.
can you paste the configuration of the channel ports and the interface.
check the sh log if you are getting any log related to the port channeling.

  • Maximum number of interfaces in Port Channel on Nexus 5596

Let me preface this by saying I am not a network expert....
I noticed that our customer had configured a port channel on their Nexus 5596 comprised of 16 interfaces. I thought the maximum number of interfaces in a port channel was 8 interfaces? I see in the Nexus 7000 documentation that if you configure 16 interfaces, the remaining 8 will be in "hot standby." Is this the same behavior on the Nexus 5000 series?
    Thank you.

Same behavior on the 5500 series and other Cisco switches like 3750, 3850 , etc..

  • SAN Port-Channel between Nexus 5000 and Brocade 5100

I have a Nexus 5000 running in NPV mode connected to a Brocade 5100 FC switch using two FC ports on a native FC module in the Nexus 5000. I would like to configure these two physical links as one logical link using a SAN Port-Channel/ISL-Trunk. An ISL trunking license is already installed on the Brocade 5100. The Nexus 5000 is running NX-OS 4.2(1), the Brocade 5100 Fabric OS 6.20. Does anybody know if this is a supported configuration? If so, how can this be configured on the Nexus 5000 and the Brocade 5100? Thank you in advance for any comments.
    Best regards,
    Florian

I tried that and I could see the status light on the ports come on but it still showed not connected.
I configured another switch (a 3560) with the same config and the same layout with the fiber and I got the connection up on it. I just cant seem to get it on the 4506, would it be something with the supervisor? Could it be wanting to use the 10gb port instead of the 1gb ports?

  • Issues with a port-channel between Nexus 5K and 4506

I'm having some trouble configuring an up-link from a Cisco 4506 to a set of Nexus 5k switches and cannot get either side to recognize the media. My configuration is as follows...
    Nexus 5k
    interface Ethernet1/22
      description ## 1A ##
      switchport mode trunk
      switchport trunk native vlan 150
      speed 1000
    Cisco 4506
    interface GigabitEthernet1/6
     switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
     switchport trunk native vlan 150
     switchport mode trunk
I am using 1gb sfp's (GLC-SX-MM) and I have verified that the fiber cables I am using and the fiber between closets is in working condition. But I cannot get the interface to come up.

Any ideas on why we would be seeing these log messages?
    Thank you.

You need to trace this mac address: - 00ab.cdef.0123 and check if this has dual nic card if yes then check if nic teaming is configured correctly ...then shut down one of the link and see if you are learning the same mac address on two different ports?

  • Port-channel L2 problem with Fabric Interconnect and Nexus 7010

    Hi,
i using port-channel from both fabric interconnect to N7k with 3 cables per Fabric Interconnect.
but, my problem is when i creating port-channel, Fabric Interconnect don't support mode ON dan rate-mode share in Interface 10G Nexus 7010.
    I was trying :
    1. I using non dedicated port in Nexus 7010.
          - rate-mode share
          - channel-group 1 mode active
          - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was suspended
    2. I using non dedicated port in Nexus 7010
         - rate-mode share
         - channel group 1 mode on
         - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was came up, but in Fabric interconnect was failed.
    3. I using dedicated port in Nexus 7010
         - rate-mode share
         - channel group 1 mode active
         - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was suspended
    4. I using dedicated port in Nexus 7010
         - rate-mode dedicated
         - channel group 1 mode active
         - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was came up and running well.
but, the problem is my costumer do not want using a dedicated rate-mode. if i using dedicated mode the only available port is 8 interfaces instead of 32 ports. i want to using rate-mode share in nexus 7010.
is there any way to configuring port-channel using mode on in fabric interconnect ? i was trying using CLI to create port-channel in Fabric interconect but i cannot configure the channel group protocol.
i attach the topology of N7K with Fabric interconnect.

    Hi Manish,
the issue was solved, i was fix it last week.
    the solution is:
i enable the license grace-priode (since my license is Enterprise so cannot create VDC) then i create a VDC (ex: VDC 2)  so i allocate the interface on all module

N7K-M132XP-12 to VDC 2. after that i delete VDC 2 then all interface back to VDC 1 (default vdc). then i enable the rate-mode share in dedicated port and bundle into port-channel and its working.

  • Port-channel issue with FI-N7k using rate-mode share

    Hi Dears,
I'm trying to using port-channel between Fabric Interconnect (FI) and N7K. in N7K use rate-mode share and LACP but the port-channel in N7K was suspended.
    I was trying :
    1. I using non dedicated port in Nexus 7010.
          - rate-mode share
          - channel-group 1 mode active
          - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was suspended
    2. I using non dedicated port in Nexus 7010
         - rate-mode share
         - channel group 1 mode on
         - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was came up, but in Fabric interconnect was failed.
    3. I using dedicated port in Nexus 7010
         - rate-mode share
         - channel group 1 mode active
         - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was suspended
    4. I using dedicated port in Nexus 7010
         - rate-mode dedicated
         - channel group 1 mode active
         - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was came up and running well.
is any other way to configure port-channel in N7K with rate-mode share and LACP ?
or it's some of limitation in port-channel when using rate-mode share at N7K ?
nb: fabric interconnect only support LACP and cannot be configurable.
    regards,
    Berwin H

    HI Mark,
    1. Can you please check your ethernet card ...where this port channel connected..on the server.
may be there are 2 different card.
    2. from cisco websites:

  • Nexus 1000v - port-channel "refresh"

    Hi All,
My question is, does anyone have any information on this 1000v command:
    Nexus-1000v(config)# port-channel internal device-id table refresh
I am looking for a way for the port-channel interface to be automatically removed from the 1000v once the VEM has been deleted, currently the port-channel interface does not disappear when the VEM has been removed. This seems to be causing problems once the same VEM is re-added later on. Ports are getting sent into quarantine states and ending up in invalid states (eg. NoPortProfile state when there is actually a port-profile attached).
Anyway, if anyone can explain the above command or tell me how to find out more, it would be great, I can't find it documented anywhere and the context-sensitive help in the NXOS is vague at best.

    Brendan,
I don't have much information on that command, but I do know it wont remove any unused port channels.  They have to be manually deleted if they're no longer needed.
The port Channel ID will remain even after a VEM is removed in case the assigned VEM comes back.  When a VEM is decommisioned permanently, I'll do a "no vem x" to also remove the Host entry for that VEM from the VSM.  This way the module slot # can be re-assigned to the next new VEM inserted.  After adding/removing VEMs just do a "show port-channel summary" to see any unused Port Channel IDs, and delete them.  It's a quick & painless task.
I would hope this wouldn't be a common issue - how often are you deleting/removing VEMs?
    Regards,
    Robert

    Thanks. Leo

    Hi Leo,
I think there may be typo in your question as I only see three conversations and not four. That aside I've not seen the Nexus port-channel load balancing sufficiently well documented to be able to give you the exact answer.
In their configuration guides Cisco only include the following statement:
Cisco NX-OS load balances traffic across all operational interfaces in a port channel by reducing part of the binary pattern formed from the addresses in the frame to a numerical value that selects one of the links in the channel.
There is other documentation that states the load balancing algorithm uses a CRC-8 based polynomial, but as we don't know exactly which parts of the frame are used in the calculation, I don't see it's possible to calculate the answer and so derive the link that will be used for a given conversation.
While I've not seen full documentation regarding the science used in the calculation, what Cisco have done is provide a command on the switch CLI that will allow you to determine which link of a port-channel will be used.
If you run the command show port-channel load-balance forwarding-path interface port-channel vlan src-ip dst-ip then one of the parts of the output is the member link of the port-channel that will be used for that flow.
You can find full details of the options for the show port-channel load-balance command in the command reference.
One other point to remember is that the load balancing across a port-channel is unidirectional, and the hashing might be completely different for the return flow of a conversation. For example it is entirely possible that traffic from A to B could use one link of a port-channel, while the return traffic from B to A for the same conversation could use a different link.
In general I would use the source-dest-port option for load balancing on the Nexus switches as this will obviously include the Layer-4 port numbers in the calculation, and so give you a better distribution of flows across all member links.

  • Nexus - port-channel load balancing

Port-channel   load balancing is a global command or interface command in Nexus switch?
    Thanks,
    Manu

    Hi,
    It's a global command; port-channel load-balance ethernet.
You can find details in the Configuring Load Balancing Using Port Channels section of the Nexus 5500 Series NX-OS Interfaces Configuration Guide.

  • Nexus 5k port channel

I want to create a port channel on my nexus switch which will be connected to my server.
will someone please share with me the configuration for the same ?

    Hi,
From server side create LACP port-channel and same from switch end.

  • Cisco Nexus 9300 Virtual Port Channel Support

    Hi,
As I am new to Nexus 9300 and I was wondering if the switch may support virtual port channel (VPC)? I was wondering if there may be any feature matrix to compare it against the 9500/N7Ks/N5Ks
    Any suggestion is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi Marvin,
Appreciate for the information. I believe the customer is in the process of moving to ACI gradually however the setup I will be making will be classical ethernet setup which is similar to VSS setup whereby the N9300 would make use of VPC to connect to catalyst 3K/6K switch. I have illustrated it below for reference:
          Catalyst 6500 Non-VSS (Core)
          |----(VPC)---|
    N9300 ----- N9300   (Aggregation/Distribution)
          |----(VPC)---|
     Catalyst 3K switch (Access)
Appreciate for clarrifiying the support for VPC for Nexus 9300 as I made a search on feature navigator for "Virtual Port Channel" which only listed the N7K platforms.
    Thanks.

  • FCoE Port Channels on Single Nexus 5K - possible?

I'm looking for information regarding FCoE on a single Nexus 5548. I'm trying to set up a port channel from a Netapp filer's CNA adapters (2 twinax cables). I was told that for some reason port channels do not work on a single Nexus 5K design (i.e. no vPC), but I didn't know if that meant simply without the use of LACP. I've configured it in both fashions, and it seems that the VFCs do not want to come up, meaning that my filers cannot log in to the SAN. This behavior is what was described to me as what would happen if I tried doing a port channel in this way - basically I've bound the VFCs to the port channels, and since the port channels are composed of ports on the same switch, it just doesn't work. Seems odd that this would bet the case, though it would normally force me to simply buy a second N5K (sneaky sneaky).
    Any tips?

That's not my issue. I'm using only one Nexus 5K, meaning that if I want to have a port channel running between the 5K and the Netapp filers, I have to bind the virtual fibre channel interfaces to that port channel. I believe that in doing so, when there are more than one links as a member of that port channel, the VFCs simply go down by design and will not come up. For some reason VFCs require to be bound to a single physical interface, whether that interfaces is a single phyiscal port or a port channel that's only configured to have one port in it.
Either way, I had to configure the Netapp side to be active/passive. I've bound the VFCs to each port (total of 4, so 4 VFCs as well). No port channels are being used on the Nexus side. This is not ideal but it works.
I would still like to see some documentation regarding the behavior of the VFCs when presented with multiple links in this way. Has anyone seen any documentation regarding this?
