Portal performance issue

We're working on Portal 3.0.9.8.3, applied all mentioned "magic settings" suggested by Oracle support, but still encountering the poor performance problem. Our site is running load balancing on 2 Application Servers, pointing to 1 database server.
During a performance test, while trying to open a total of 100 browsers in 10 PCs (10 browsers for 1 PC) accessing the welcome page (with some Oracle provided portlets like Set Languages, Login, HTML Portlet, and 2 tailor-made JSP portlets) at the same time (should be "almost at the same time"), the CPU of the AS boosted up to 100% for quite a long while, but the CPU of the DB seems normal. And only some of the browsers can access the welcome page, whilst some errors like the following appeared:
"Portlet Timeout";
"Timeout occurred whilst retrieving page meta data";
"Portlet could not be contacted";
"HTTP 500 internal server error", etc.
Did anyone try similar performance test before? Is there any reference site running Portal successfully on top of Windows 2000 platform, with the capability of around 1,000 concurrent access?

Michael,
Did you read the following document ?
http://portalstudio.oracle.com/pls/ops/docs/FOLDER/COMMUNITY/OTN_CONTENT/MAINPAGE/ARCHITECTURE/TROUBLESHOOTING_ISSUES_IN_ORACLE9IAS_PORTAL2.HTM
This document (amongst other things) explains how to analyse problems like this.
Do you have error logs from Apache, Jserv and the database ?
Have you run the portal in debug mode (_debug=1) ?
If so, what did it say ?
How long do the custom portlets take to return ?
Is the content cached ?
etc etc
You need to understand also that your testing method is a little primitive, if you have 10 pc's with 10 browsers open, then you will have instantiated 10 sessions, each of the browsers will be accessing the same session on the PC as we write a cookie for the session the first time you connect, (unless of course you didn't log on)
Just because you have the browser sessions started does not mean that you have a concurrent user community. Remember that HTTP is a disconnect request/response protocol, there is no notion of being concurrent. You should operate in terms of page requests per second (preq/s).
With this in mind, consider that my.oracle.com, which has over 300,000 registered users, only gets 120preq/s. You can read about this further in the whitepaper 'Architecting my.oracle.com' on OTN.
If you have applied 3.0.9.8.3 then you will have access to the performance logging features exposed in that patch. I would suggest that you use that to try and analyse the problems you are seeing.

Jason

  • How to restrict logging on portal (Performance issue)

    Hi guys,
does anyone know how to restrict logging of the portal? Even though I made a change on Visual Administrator -> Services -> Log Configurator setting ALL categories to severity = 'Error', I keep getting 'Info' severity traces logged in defaultTrace.trc (viewed by Logg Viewer). Which in practise means tons of logged trace information! I think this might be one of the reasons we have been experiencing performance issues lately.
Does anyone know how to restrict this logging?
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Frank

    Hi,
I would not only set the severity of categories to 'Error' but also locations to 'Error'.
A log controller - can be a "category" or a "location".     Categories are used for "logging" and represent problem areas such as network, database, security, user interface, etc. Identified by a slash-separated ('/') path of names, prefixed with an additional slash.     Locations are used for "tracing" and correspond to places in the development components. Identified by a dot-separated ('.') path of names, which is often the name of the respective java package.

  • Performance issue of BI reports in SAP Enterprise portal

    Dear Friends,
We have  integrated BI reports with SAP Enterprise portal 7.0.Reports are running properly But the issue is reports are taking more time to dispsaly its content and leading it to  performance effect.
In Bex ( BI side) reports  performance is little better than  SAP EP platform. BI Team also looking for ways to improve performance  at BI side.
Could you please share your valuable ideas to improve  the performance at SAP EP side also ..
    Thanks and Regards
    Ratnakar Reddy

    Hi ratnakar,
The first step is to identify which component is causing the performance problem. Run your report in the portal but try appending the string &PROFILING=X in the end of the URL. This will generate BI statistics which you can use to see which component (Java stack, ABAP stack, Database) is causing the performance issue.
    Hope this helps.

  • Performance issue in Portal Reports

    Hi
We are experiencing a serious performance issue, in a report, and need a urgent fix on this issue.
The report is a Reports From SQL Query report, I need to find a way to dynamically make/create the where clause otherwise I have to make the statement in a way the exclude the use of indexes.
Full-table-scan is not a valid option here; the number or records is simply too high (several millions its a datawarehouse solution). In the Developer packaged, we can make the where clause dynamically, this basic yet extremely important feature, is essential to all database application.
We need to know how to do it, and if this functionality is not natively supported, then this should be one of the priority one functionalities to implement in future releases.
However, what do I do for now?
    Thank in advance

I have found a temporary workaround, by editing the where clause in the stored procedure manually. However this fix have to be done every time a change have been committed in the wizard, so it is still not a solution to go for indefinitely, but its ok for now.

  • BW  Performance issue

    Hi,
We have done reorge for four tablespaces PSAPBTABI, PSAPBTABD, PSAPODSD, PSAPODSI  in our BW System 7.0. And we have created new tablespaces for above our tablespaces like PSAPODSINEW for all the above tablespaces and made the old tablespaces as offline. After doing this activity we are facing lot of performance problems.
For e.g while our BW guys are running one report for the portal it is executing but after a long time like after 2+ hours the page goes empty. The report is CL_SQL_RESULT_SET=============CP, not only this report but lot of reports. We have done statistics update for the tables that report uses using BRCONNECT and also rebuild the indexex for all the tables. But still no luck.

    Hi,
For the BASIS related performance issues :
    1. This is mostly DBA related : Keeping an eye on the DB space to monitor the growth of the database and look at space available and needed to prevent shutting down the BW server.
    2. Making sure that backups don't consume a lot of time to interfere with daily operations.
    3. Doing load balancing
    4. Making sure IDocs are flowing freely.
    5. Making sure that shared drives and servers don't overshoot the capacity.
    6. Patching servers and server instances to improve performance.
The BW consultants can monitor the the space , etc using tcode DB02. The DBAs have their own tools to monitor these parameters.
    Cheers,
    Kedar

  • EP6 sp12 Performance Issue, Need help to improve performance

We have a Portal development environment with EP6.0 sp12.
What we are experiencing is performance issue, It's not extremely slow, but slow compared to normal ( compared to our prod box). For example, after putting the username and password and clicking the <Log on> Button it's taking more than 10 secs for the first home page to appear. Also currently we have hooked the Portal with 3 xAPPS system and one BW system. The time taken for a BW query to appear ( with selection screen) is also more than 10 secs. However access to one other xAPPS is comparatively faster.
Do we have a simple to use guide( Not a very elaborate one) with step by step guidance to immediately improve the performance of the Portal.
Simple guide, easy to implement,  with immediate effect is what we are looking for in the short term
    Thanks
    Arunabha

    Hi Eric,
I have searched but didn't find the Portal Tuning and Optimization Guide as you have suggested, Can you help to find this.
    Subrato,
This is good and I would obviously read through this, The issue here is this is only for Network.
But do you know any other guide, which as very basic ( may be 10 steps) and show step by step the process, it would be very helpful. I already have some information from the thread Portal Performance - page loads slow, client cache reset/cleared too often
But really looking for answer ( steps to do it quickly and effectively) instead of list of various guides.
It would be very helpful if you or anybody( who has actually done some performance tuning) can send  a basic list of steps that I can do immediately, instead of reading through these large guides.
I know I am looking for a shortcut, but this is the need of the hour.
    Thanks
    Arun

How to improve performance in reporting side?
    Query Performance Techniques:
    1. Check Query properties—Use RSRT tcode
    2. Check whether cube is compressed
    3. Optimize query definition
    4. Analyze query execution
    5. Check for additional indexes
    6. Archive unwanted data
    7. Check for partitioning options
    8. Check for additional aggregates ( Consider DB ratio and KPI ratio)
    9. Check for parallelization options
    10. Use Nav attributes instead of hierarchies, use free char and filters.
Possible causes for the performance :
    A) High Database Runtime
    B) High OLAP Runtime
    C) High Frontend Runtime
    Depending upon your analysis
    A)Strategy - High Database Runtime
Check if an aggregate is suitable (use All data to get values "selected records to transferred records", a high number here would be an indicator for query performance improvement using an aggregate)
Check if database statistics are update to data for the Cube/Aggregate, use Tcode RSRV output (use database check for statistics and indexes)
Check if the read mode of the query is unfavourable - Recommended (H)
    B)Strategy - High OLAP Runtime
Check if a high number of Cells transferred to the OLAP (use "All data" to get value "No. of Cells")
    a) Use RSRT technical Information to check if any extra OLAP-processing is necessary (Stock Query, Exception Aggregation, Calc. before Aggregation, Virtual Char. Key Figures, Attributes in Calculated Key Figs, Time-dependent Currency Translation) together with a high number of records transferred.
    b) Check if a user exit Usage is involved in the OLAP runtime?
    c) Check if large hierarchies are used and the entry hierarchy level is as deep as possible. This limits the levels of the hierarchy that must be processed.
    C)Strategy - High Frontend Runtime
    1) Check if frontend PC are within the recommendation (RAM, CPU Mhz)
    2) Check if the bandwidth for WAN connection is sufficient.

  • Upgrading from 4.2 to 5.1 Performance Issues

    Hi All,
We are finally upgrading from 4.2 to 5.1. Both our 4.2 and 5.1 servers are identical, however, we are noticing major performance issues in one of our applications that contains 7 account hierarchies and 4 entity hierarchies. Creating a simple any by any can take up to 3.5 minutes in 5.1 where as it takes less than 2 seconds in 4.2. We could split up some of the account hierarchies into separate dimension and applications, but I find it hard to believe that we need to redesign our applications to fit 5.1 handling of multiple hierarchies.
Has anyone else run into similar issues, if so, what was done to overcome them?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
We had some performance issues with BPC 5.1 SP4, we upgrade to SP9 and take recomendations found on the How To doc below found here on sdn:
[How to Use MDX Dimension Formulas Article |https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/008d665b-94bf-2a10-78b2-b32ffe04ba73]
As I know just account hierarchies are supported (at least in our case) with hard limitations on hierarchies formulas.
    Hope this helps,

  • XI performance issue

    Hello ,
I am facing one XI performance issue. We are using PI 7.1 SP 7 on AIX 5.3 and Oracle 10.2.0.4
I have testing a simple file to file scenario, every 0.09 second, PI pull one 1kb size file from AIX file system and process, PI works fine, the item in Queue I see in SMQ2 is normally 10 - 20.
But someone has implemented their own Scenario, it ECC 6 send iDoc to PI, PI process and send to SQL Server 2000 by JDBC adapter, it also use Acknowledgment. They uses complicated mapping, normally takes up to 10 seconds.  The performance is bad,  items in Queue is about 1000+.
I really don't understand what is the problem.

If your DB CPU is pegged, then anything that does db operations will take time (including some portal operations). If you take a thread dump you should be able to see them waiting on the DB
When we run BEA query for report it takes around 10 min to run and content count is around 70,000,No. If it causes your CPU to max out it isnt. However your content items arent that much, so what query are you running? You could always export and import just the content tables and run your queries on some other machine (Assuming this is the cause)
    3. Some times we get Socket connection error.More information needed
    4. Sometimes we get portal datasource connection pool error, currently it is set as 30.What is the error?
    5. Almost every process is slow.If the DB is maxed this is what you should expect.
When is the query fired? Are your indexes created? I assume caching is not much good to you since these are reporting queries?

  • Performance Issue in NWBC Material 6.1

We are facing a major performance issue on Development and QA env for Material NWBC in 6.1 during UAT with a limited users only.  Initially we have observed that the memory space is 0% and 2% on Dev and Q environments. We have asked the infrastructure partner to take a corrective action and the memory was freed on the environments. But this did not help.
Then we doubted on http side of the Dev and Q system. No issue were found with the connection to BODS. As per the observation from the infra team there is no real bottleneck, from OS, SAP and DB2 side. Even the restart of all the components was also performed but still the performance issue exists. Please suggest.
    Thanks,
    Subhronath

    Hi,
Did you trace the ABAP logs?..it indicates which area/methods of your application taking long time. you might want to do in ST12 trace and you may use tool like httpwatch or SAT trace to find out where exactly it's taking time or memory.
Once you do that, You may need to refer MDG performance tweak document to fine tune your performance issue.
    SCN Link is here.

  • Urgent Performance Issue

    Hi,
Can someone please tell me and explain me that if i have performance issue at the portal side then what cache settings i have to choose at rsrt and then at the reporting agent level.
I will appreciate if you can explain me also in detail.
I will appreciate and award points.
    Thanks
    Sakshi

    Hi Sakshi,
For your question pls read the following document carefully, so you will know the correct information,
    regarding your question.
    <b>Read Mode</b>
The read mode determines how the OLAP processor gets data during navigation. Three alternatives are supported:
    1. Read when navigating/expanding the hierarchy
In this method, the system transports the smallest amount of data from the database to the OLAP processor but the number of read processes is the largest.
In the "Read when navigating" mode below, data is requested in a hierarchy drilldown for the fully expanded hierarchy. In the "Read when navigating/expanding the hierarchy" mode, data in the hierarchy is aggregated by the database and transferred to the OLAP processor from the lowest hierarchy level displayed in the start list. When expanding a hierarchy node, the system intentionally reads this node's children.
You can improve the performance of queries with large presentation hierarchies by creating aggregates in a middle hierarchy level that is greater than or equal to the start level.
    2. Read when navigating
The OLAP processor only requests the data required for each query navigation status in the Business Explorer. The data required is read for each navigation step.
In contrast to the "Read when navigating/expanding the hierarchy" mode, the system always fully reads presentation hierarchies at tree level.
When expanding nodes, the OLAP processor can read the data from the main memory.
When accessing the database, the system uses the most suitable aggregate table and, if possible, aggregates in the database itself.
    3. Read everything at once
There is only one read process in this mode. When executing the query in the Business Explorer, the data required for all possible navigation steps for this query is read to the OLAP processor's main memory area. When navigating, all new navigation statuses are aggregated and calculated from the main memory data.
The "Read when navigating/expanding the hierarchy" mode has a markedly better performance in almost all cases than the other two modes. This is because the system only requests the data that the user wants to see in this mode.
The "Read when navigating" setting, in contrast to "Read when navigating/expanding the hierarchy", only has a better performance for queries with presentation hierarchies.
In contrast to the two previous modes, the "Read everything at once" setting also has a better performance with queries with free characteristics. The idea behind aggregates, that is working with pre-aggregated data, is least supported in the "Read everything at once" mode. This is because the OLAP processor carries out aggregation in each query view.
We recommend you choose the "Read when navigating/ expanding the hierarchy" mode.
Only use different mode to "Read when navigating/ expanding the hierarchy" in exceptional circumstances.
The "Read everything at once" mode can be useful in the following cases:
The InfoProvider does not support selection, meaning the OLAP processor reads significantly more data than the query needs anyway.
A user exit is active in the query that prevents the system from having already aggregated in the database.
