Portege R700 - how to clean keyboard keys?

Hi
I have a Toshiba Portege R700 - and I have spilt some coke onto a small section of the keyboard.
Unsurprisingly, two or three keys are now "sticky".
Is this as simple as getting access to the keyboard and cleaning the relevant keys?
Or is it not as simple as that?
If I can do this, is there a pictorial guide on how to access the keyboard?
I am loathe to open it without a look at the tech manual first.
Thanks

Hello
In my opinion you will not be able to clean it properly. Coke is full of sugar. It can be complicated but you can try it.
In worst case you must exchange he keyboard.
So what you must do is to remove key cap for each critical button. It is fixed with small plastic holders. Just take something like credit card but more stabile, put under the key cap and try to remove it. Under the key cap is small key mechanism. Try to clean it up with wet cloth. Be very careful and clean it without much pressure.
When you think it is OK place the key cap in the place and press it down, very gently of course.
You will hear click noise and the key cp should be in place again.
I hope you will be able to get it work again.
Please post some feedback.

  • C#: How to convert Keyboard.key (Unicode char as number) into correct char?

    Our application uses barcode scanner.
when scanning a barcode and convert Keyboard.key (as ushort with value 16, it represents char ':') by using
    1)(char)(Keyboard.key)
    2) or Convert.ToChar(Keyboard.key),
both way convert into symbol '+'.
    How to convert into ':'?
What is a correct way to convert Keyboard.key as ushort into correct char? Thx!

    Hi Dan Nemec,
It is normal '+'. It is special '+' symbol.
We search a little bit and find out Unicode ':' is 3A and value is not 16.
So during the process barcode scanner, the value has been changed in some way.
We are trying to find out where the value has been changed.

  • How to clean keyboard?

How can I lightly clean my keyboard. It only has grease on it from typing.

Well, the wipes seem like a good option because they're pre-moistened. There's a couple of threads in this forum where people thought their cloths weren't too damp, only to have their computers die soon after. So I'd rather be able to sue a manufacturer.
The difference between moist and dripping wet seems pretty simple to me, but for those who find this distinction too subtle, pre-moistened wipes are probably a good idea.

  • How to clean Keyboard for  iMac G4

Have an old iMac (dome shape) G4 and white keyboard. Right now, I have some dirt lodged below the keys inside the keyboard.
Question: can I clean this up? take apart the keyboard?

    Hi Joseph,
Apparently dismantling these keyboards is not for the fainthearted. If you're feeling brave have a look at: these instructions.
We have had some success cleaning our Apple Pro keyboard by disconnecting it (obviously!) and just gently tapping it around upsidedown, blowing into it, and using the vacuum cleaner crevice tool.
You have inadvertently posted your query in the iBook forum. You might get more constructive advice over in the iMac Flat Panel Forum. Not that you're not welcome here, you understand…

  • Removing/Cleaning keyboard keys

I accidentally spilled some soda on some of the keys on the left side of the iBook keyboard. I wiped it up right away and it wasn't very much soda, but some of the keys stick because a bit of the soda has dried underneath the keys. I've tried cleaning them as much as I can but I was wondering if it's possible/easy to take the keys off and then put them back on. Anyone know?

It's definately possible but it might not be easy. I haven't had to dismantle my iBook laptop's keyboard yet, but here's some advice from someone who has:

It looks like a pretty helpful page.

  • E71: how to remap keyboard keys

    Hi!
I was wondering whether there is a way to remap the keys on the qwerty keyboard on E71. I basically want a different layout. Is there any system utility I could use, buy, etc.?
The reason I want this is because a standard native Russian keyboard ("jetsukeng" as it is called) is something I am not used to. I prefer a phonetic keyboard sometimes called "yawerty", so I'd like to use it on E71.
    Thanks in advance,

Maybe something like Magic Key? http://bit.ly/grQHq
My experience with Magic Key has been pretty good, on my E71, although I'm not remapping a whole lot of keys. I remap a few keys, so they function differently, depending on which application is active.

  • Re: How to fix keyboard keys on Satellite L40?

    Hi,
I'm wondering if you can help me...my boyfriends cat laid on my keyboard, the key 'b' jammed and fell off. I have a Satellite L40 series. I have the blue and black hinge and the 'b' key. I require my laptop for various assignments. Please help me!!Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
Its tricky to fix this if the plastic hinge is broken.
Not sure if you will be able to replace only the hinge but I found a nice movie on youtube which shows a replacement of such hinges.

However, in worst case you will need to replace the keyboard.

  • How can I clean the keys on my Macbook Pro?

I got my macbook pro 7 months ago and the keys look terrible. I guess my fingers are naturally greasy, because the keys aren't as matte and rough as they were when I got the macbook; they're softer, have oil patches and are worn down. I've searched this topic everywhere but couldn't get a direct answer, and my keys need to be cleaned... Also, are they supposed to be worn down? My friend has had her macbook since last year and her keyboard is still matte and brand new, even though she doesn't clean it or use a keyboard cover. :T

I have cleaned my keys using two methods 1) with the microfiber cloth the mac came with.  I made sure the cloth wasn't very wet. 2) I used electronic wipes.  Both yielded excellent results.  Make sure your mac is turned off and the magsafe power adapter is unplugged.  I have had my current mac for 15 months and the keys do not appear to be worn at all, but I suppose it depends on how hard you type and how often.

  • How do clean the new aluminum keyboard?

I have a new wireless aluminimum keyboard (the thin model) and recently spilt beer on it. Now the keys are all gummy. Does anyone know how to remove the keys to clean them? Or where I might be able to find some help?
I've seen some self-help sites for the older wireless keyboards, but not the new aluminum model. Any help at all would be appreciated as the keyboard is rather new still.
    Thanks!
    Sam

Just an FYI, I just recently cleaned one that had a mug of hot chocolate spilled into it. Half the keys didn't work after the spill.
I ran scalding hot water through it (basically it was 100% soaking) and then let it air dry for a few days. All the keys now work except one.
I'm tempted to rip off that key and manually fix it if I can (it's the f12/volume up).

Several online sites that used to have helpful info for now vintage Apple hardware have
gone away, probably due to economics and the forward of planned obsolescence. Ones
such as LowEndMac, and XLR8 Mac had so much more.
Hopefully you can make the keyboard work; or get a working used one from a supplier
such as powerbookmedic - or wegenermedia, whose inventory is larger because they
actually fix most portable Macs. The latter can repair on-site, like most major fixes.
    Good luck in this matter!

  • Cleaned the keys on my wireless keyboard, 5 keys not working.

Cleaned the keys on my wireless keyboard with rubbing alcohol. Now my number 2 key, w, s, x and caps lock keys won't work. I copy and paste these right now. I did notice the cotton balls were saturated and some seeped out, but I didn't notice that my keys didn't work till 2 days later. I did leave my keyboard in the sun to see if it helped for about 45 min. It's still not working. Any suggestions? Hope There is a way to save my keyboard.

I did notice the cotton balls were saturated and some seeped out,
Never clean a keyboard with rubbing alcohol and never leave the keyboard in the sun, or any Apple products for that matter.
You may need to purchase a new keyboard.
In the future, follow the instructions here >  How to clean Apple products

  • ThinkPad Yoga - Keyboard key stucks - how to remove it correctly

    Hi everybody,
this is maybe a simple and stupid question but I won't do anything wrong.
One of my keyboard keys does not work correctly, I think there is something under the key which is blocking because when I press the key I feel a stronger resistance than on the other keys. Sometimes I need to press the key 3 or 4 times before the letter is written - realy annoying
Obviously I should remove the key and clean it or remove whatever is under the key. Since my ThinkPad Yoga is quite new I don't want to damage it or lose my warrenty through "learning by doing"...
So can anybody tell me how to remove a key from the ThinkPad Yoga keyboard correctly and reassemble it correctly as well? -> without any damage
    Reagards,
    Ben

Thanks for the link, but don't you think there is a possibility to remove a single key and not the whole keyboard?
I found this video for "ThinkPad keyboards" - however, like you mentioned the lift and lock keyboard is probably a special case.
Does anyone know if the method from the video works for the TP Yoga also?
