Possible solution to disconnecting issues with Realtek RTL8188CE

As you may recall I've been having issues with my RTL8188CE WLAN card (and if I recall I'm not the only one), anyway I have found something that solves it for, at least, my system
I introduce to you: Linux Mint Debian Edition, the distro itself is irrelevant but how it sets up networking is very relevant, from what I can tell it uses a so called obsolete method of setting up the network firmware this would be ndiswrapper, from what I can tell it works excellent.
Another thing I noticed is that this card is utter garbage in any OS, it doesn't work right in windows either (making multiplayer games... less than entertaining)
Now, here's the catch: I don't recall how LMDE set it up nor do I have a partition running it right now (sacrificed for a pure debian jessie system (I always keep coming back to debian)), if anyone has this card they could try installing lmde to figure out the network setup it is using (actually, that would be really helpful)
Anyway, that's my two cents to the issue of getting this card working
No seriously, that's all. Now off to get my Debian install and then arch install working with this setup to verify that it can be replicated on other systems. (if possible could anyone try this and post their results, I had four disconnects over the last month, three were my own fault for messing with the driver)
P.S if this is in the wrong section (might be, it seemed like the most relevant one to me though) please don't overreact ^^
EDIT: Update - the card seems to work somewhat reliably with the native linux driver on kernel 3.10 with ipv6 disabled, still not perfect but *usable* (as in haven't disconnected for over an hour)
Now, time to do some more experimenting (the actual stability seems very random depending on kernel version, driver version, position of the moon and whether or not you've successfully located elmo)

UPDATE: Okay, so as I mentioned that running kernel 3.10 with ipv6 (and powersaving) disabled it works, it isn't perfect, it loses connection every now and then, doesn't get any usable speeds and it randomly disconnects and requires a reauth, nothing major as it isn't exactly common (ugh, it's a major improvement over disconnects every two seconds)
This card is still awful though (on an unrelated note I still find it hilarious that the card works even worse in windows *rolls eyes* I blame microsoft)

  • A Possible Solution to the Issues with QuickTime  + Beloved Question Mark.

This is a possible solution to this issue. I have been doing some thinking about this. I have suggested the answer would come from Apple Computer, through an update of "QuickTime". I looked at the applications using the internet. I highlighted them, did a "Find Info" or Apple/Command-I. I decided to check the "Rossetta" box and in my case, better functionality. One thing, make sure you check all of them. I am not jumping up and down and screaming I have the answer. I am just saying it's a possibility. If you want to go this route, let's talk if we run into problems. This is the purpose of the discussion boards.

The charger port pin in an iphone 5 is broken. What are the possible solutions to this issue?

    Read: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4436
It is pretty short so here is the entire text:
    Symptoms
A purplish or other colored flare, haze, or spot is imaged from out-of-scene bright light sources during still image or video capture.
    Resolution
Most small cameras, including those in every generation of iPhone, may exhibit some form of flare at the edge of the frame when capturing an image with out-of-scene light sources. This can happen when a light source is positioned at an angle (usually just outside the field of view) so that it causes a reflection off the surfaces inside the camera module and onto the camera sensor. Moving the camera slightly to change the position at which the bright light is entering the lens, or shielding the lens with your hand, should minimize or eliminate the effect.
Which is exactly what eelw wrote.

  • Windows 7 on e9280t has issues with Realtek HD audio drivers

This is driving me crazy. My PC runs great, but there is obviously an issue with the drivers for Realtek and Win 7. Sometimes I have sound, sometimes I don't. You just never know. Most of the time it doesn't even register that I have speakers. I've tried downloaded the driver from the HP site. I've also tried downloading the driver from Realtek's site. Nothing has worked yet. Still no sound. Anyone have any clue what might be causing this, or if there is a fix in the works?
    http://twitter.com/cthemenway

Try this.  Right click on the Audio icon in the tray.  Then, click  Properties.  This opens the 'Sounds and Audio Devices Properties'.  Check all of the settings to assure they are correct.  You may have to change the settings one at a time to see if one of them does the trick.  When I have had a problem with the speakers not being recognized, it was incorrect speakers chosen.

  • MACbook Pro/Bluetooth?Disconnect issues with an Apple mouse and keyboard

    Well Folks-
The disconnect issue I have with my Macbook Pro using a wireless Apple Keyboard and mouse is BACK.    I wiped the hard drive clean and I reinstalled and I updated the O.S. system including purchasiing Lion via the ineternet one by one and the disconnect issue has retuned on Day 4.    What else is there left to do?   Anyone?

    Hi....
Might be corrupted Bluetooth preferences (.plist)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
See if that helped. You may need to re, "pair" your devices and the Mac OS X will re geneate a new .plist file for you.
Make sure the batteries are fresh also.

  • Potential Solution: Home Sharing issues with iTunes 10.6

TL;DR: On a hunch, I changed the power settings of the ATV to never sleep. Since then, I have not had any issues. Granted, it's only been a couple of days, but it seems to have done the trick.
    Folks,
Wanted to share my experience with Home Sharing issues after upgrading to iTunes 10.6. These forums a rampant with reports of the issue, so I'll defer to the search field above if you don't know what I am talking about. In short: iTunes 10.6 seems to have busted Home Sharing.
For those who do, here's what I found:
For some reason, is saw a very large number of established sessions from my Apple TV (ATV) into port 3689 on my Mac. This is the port that ATV uses to query iTunes to see what's available via Home Sharing (e.g.: what movies, songs, pictures, etc are available for display on the ATV).
A sniffer cap and some observation of the power indicator on the ATV indicated that while it was sleeping, the ATV was querying iTunes. It would power on for a sec (wake on LAN, maybe?), issue some queries, then sleep.
When this happened, the TCP sessions created were never town down. As such, I would eventually see 200+ established sessions on port 3689. I don't know exactly how many it took to make this happen, but when I saw this, iTunes stopped accepting new connections.
Of course, bouncing iTunes would remedy the issue for a while, but it would return.
On a hunch, I changed the power settings of the ATV to never sleep. Since then, I have not had any issues. Granted, it's only been a couple of days, but it seems to have done the trick.
I would be interested to hear if it works for others.
    Happy viewing,
    Chris

    Thanks for posting this.
I've been searching for an option of how to approach this problem.
I picked up the new AppleTV when it was released, but it has made iTunes fairly useless from a Home Sharing standpoint.
I also observed the massive number of TCP connections being opened against iTunes, but never closed.
As expected, I could manually kill a few of these connections, and then could connect again, even without closing iTunes.
I performed most of my testing with Windows 7, but while troubleshooting I had the same issue with iTunes on an old Mac Mini I had sitting around.
I will try your solution, which makes a lot of sense, but it would be nice if Apple fixed the real problem.
    Thanks again.

  • Solution for sleep issues with external display?

I had an Early 2011 Macbook Pro that worked quite well with an external display.  I now have a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro (bought 5 days ago, and running 10.10.3) that will not consistently work with the same external monitor.
I had it working yesterday for a few hours only if I left the MBP with the top open (both the MBP screen and external monitor stayed lit).  But, today it is back to freezing each time the monitor is connected to it.
    I have tried:
    1.  Connecting the external monitor to the MBP with the top open.  Results in the MBP screen now going dark and no signal being passed to the external monitor.  If the external monitor is disconnected, the MBP screens stays dark and the computer is unresponsive requiring a hard restart.
    2.  Connecting the external monitor to the MBP with the top closed.  Results in no signal being sent to the external monitor.  Disconnecting the external monitor and reopening the MBP yields, again, and unresponsive computer which requires a hard restart.
I have tried three different external monitors, all giving the same result.  The MBP is connect to external power, and I am running the latest OS (10.10.3).
Any suggestions before I return this to the Apple store in a rage?  :-)

    Hello there, Gaflin.
I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trouble getting your external display to work the way you are expecting with your new MacBook Pro. The following Knowledge Base article provides a great checklist of steps for troubleshooting the issue you seem to be describing:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Using Closed lid, Extended Desktop, or Mirroring display modes
When using multiple displays, information can be presented in a number of ways. For more information and what modes are supported by your Apple product refer to:

  • Possible solution to authorization issues

Recently I had the issue with 8.1.1 where when you try to play a song you bought from iTunes it asks you to authorize your computer. You do and it doesn't matter. De-authing and re-authing does nothing. Deleting the sc shared folder doesn't work. So, I e-mailed iTunes support from the support page and someone responded back to reinstall a new copy of iTunes over the old. I did, rebooted and it works fine now. Just hoping some others can get help out of this.

  • Solution for sound issue with MCP78S chip

I have had sound problems where sound would work sometimes then stop working for no reason. Or it would work after I changed the device order in KDE4 but it would only work for KDE4 programs not VLC or console apps.
    Output of
    # lspci
    is
00:07.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] High Definition Audio (rev a1)
I installed the alsa package with pacman and noticed that alsamixer would use my PC speaker as the default device.
So my solution to this issue is to blacklist the pc speaker module, this will stop the damn beeping when I use the console and fixed the sound issue.
Open rc.conf and blacklist the modules
    MODULES=( !pcspkr !snd_pcsp )
That is it, the modules will no longer be loaded and sound should be working fine after a reboot.

i am having problems with this same chipset on my laptop, it plays but it skips some sound, and sometimes it stops completely, very annoying, i have not found any solution to this problem as yet

  • Are there solutions to Compatibility Issues with Thunderbird, Windows 8.1 and Anti-Virus Software, e.g., MacAfee?

Since I upgraded to Windows 8.1, Thunderbird freezes up and goes into "Not Responding" mode repeatedly every few minutes. My research indicates that it is a problem with compatibility with antivirus software, which obviously is needed with an e-mail program. How can this problem be solved, or is there an antivirus program that works seamlessly with Thunderbird and Windows 8.1?

Personally I use ESET NOD32. It is not cheap, but it is unobtrusive and appears to get the job done. Originally I was drawn there for their server protection, but since I no longer have windows servers that need is gone, but I see no reason to change.
    Previously over the years I have used;
    * Norton (Found it just to much embedded into the operating system. Something went wrong with it and Windows would not boot.
    * Microsoft Security Essentials. Any application using large data files was unworkably slow. That included Thunderbird.
    * AVG It was just clunky and I did not like it.
But the big issue these days is the products are not just anti virus, they are suites including firewalls, password managers/vaults and often spam and scam tools. It is usually these later tools that cause the most issues with the firewalls blocking anything but known versions of known software and spam tools that mess up because it has not had enough testing.
Basically your on your own in selecting a product5. I can not recommend one. But I seriously question the need for mail scanning. Especially after that remarkable admission by Symantec regarding Norton's not scanning mail.
Thunderbird does not run any scripts in mail, nor does it do anything with attachments before you open them and then it decodes them and places them in the temp folder where any good anti virus will scan them.
Personally I suggest anti virus rather than security suite software. Especially so if you use Chrome or Firefox browsers and they both use Google lists of known malware and phishing site to block inadvertent visits.
Windows has a firewall, your modem (over 90%) has one as well, those firewalls block ports, protocols and route traffic. Do you also need one that blocks programs?
Mozilla products have a password manager, do you need another? And so the list goes on.

  • Permanent solution to permissions issue with ML and iPhoto?

Hi, since upgrading my late-2011 Imac to ML, I have had issues with iPhoto. (All updates have been applied as they become available.) I am using a shared iphoto library across two user accounts. Both users are Admin accounts. When user A loads pictures, user B cannot see them til we have run the 'repair permissions' option. Same happens in reverse ie user B loads photos and we need to repair permissions for them to be visible to user A. (Thumbnails are available but when clicking through to the actual photo we get the 'exclamation mark / point of death'.) Any ideas on a permanent fix for this, as the need to do this every time is a pain tbh.

  • Having issues with Realtek HD Audio Manager, need help

Sorry if I am in the wrong section for this,
I just got a Z87-G45 MB (v1.10) latest is: 1.30 which has the Realtek HD Audio onboard, now to the problem:
I have the Logitech Z906 speakers which is a 5.1 setup and I have them plugged through the Digital S-PDIF/out on the back panel (Green) but the problem is, the computer isn't detecting the speakers and since it doesn't detect them, I don't have the option tab to manage the audio settings in the Realtek HD Audio Manager Control Panel so that I can set it to 5.1/2.1/quad, etc. Even when I disconnect/connet the digital cable, it doesn't detect that it's been disconnected/connected and the speakers appear as "Ready" in the Playback Devices menu .
Another problem I have is that there's audio, but the audio level is way too low, even at 100% and I think this has to do with me not being able to set up Realtek to 5.1.
When I plugged my headphones through the front panel, everything worked fine and the option to set up the audio for stereo, etc. appeared.
I did a rollback on the Realtek HD Audio Drivers
    Current: 6.0.1.6873
    Latest: 6.0.1.6959
    Things I've done:
1.Re-install Realtek drivers from motherboard CD
    2.Update drivers
3.Disconnect/connect the cable to see if the computer would recognize it
4.Check the Playback Devices, choose Digital SPDIF green as default
    5.Turned off all enhancements
6.Set the Realtek Digital Audio level to 100% in the properties tab
I'll provide some screenshots of what I see:
What I should be able to see:

  • Possible solution for problems printing with ICC profiles - esp. R2400

(N.B. This is long because I've decided to go in to details about the background of the problem etc.. Also note that whilst my experience is with the Epson R2400, anyone with problems printing using ICC profiles in Aperture may find this post helpful, as will be explained further down the post.)
Ok, here's the situation. I've been an Aperture user for over a year, and an R2400 owner for half a year. In that time I have done a huge amount of experimenting, but I've never managed to get Aperture to work perfectly with Epson's 'premium' R2400 ICC profiles - the ones you can download from their site which are better than the ones provided 'in the box'. This hasn't been too big a deal because, in fact, the R2400 does a rather good job just set to 'System Managed' in Aperture and 'Epson Vivid' with a gamma of 1.8 in the printer driver. Nevertheless, it really annoyed me that something that should work wasn't, which is why I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out what's going on. Having said that, I have come across a method which will give you pretty good prints out of your Epson R2400 using the premium profiles in Aperture - it's not perfect, but it's the best you're going to get if you want to use those profiles in Aperture. I understand the words 'it's not perfect' aren't what photography experts would probably want to hear, however, I have seen a few anguished posts from R2400 owners in here before, so I think some people may find it useful.
The whole reason why Aperture is hopeless at using the R2400's premium profiles is because - unusually - their default rendering intent is set to 'relative colorimetric' rather than 'perceptual'. You might say 'but that's good - it means you get more accurate colours!', and if you do, you're right... however, there's a snag. To get an image to reproduce well using Epson's premium profiles and relative colorimetric rendering, you really need to use black point compensation. This is where the trouble lies: Aperture's black point compensation is diabolical to the point of being unusable when used with relative colorimetric rendering - I feel I need to be awarded compensation every time I've ever tempted to use the setting. So because BPC in Aperture is unusable, that effectively makes the premium profiles unusable too, because Aperture always uses the default rendering intent specified in the profile.
The solution? Use perceptual rendering instead. Ok, so you can't change the rendering intent in Aperture, which makes that sound a tad difficult. However, as I said in the above paragraph, Aperture always obeys the default rendering intent specified in the profile... so you can see where we're going with this: we need to change the ICC profiles' default rendering intent from 'relative colorimetric' to 'perceptual'. I did some digging around and found one or two expensive pieces of software that could do that... but then I found that, lo and behold, the Mac OS has a command-line utility which can do the job for us, for precisely £0.00. It's called SIPS or 'Scriptable Image Processing System', and you can find out some information about it here: http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn2035.html#TNTAG58 For those who don't like reading technical jargon however, here's what you need to do to convert a profile's rendering intent. First go to terminal, then type in the following command:
    sips -s renderingIntent perceptual
Do not press 'enter' yet. Instead, add a space after 'perceptual', find the ICC profile you want to modify, and click and drag it into the terminal window. You should then find that your command looks something like this:
    sips -s renderingIntent perceptual /Users/yourname/folder/RandomProfile.ICC
At which point you can then press 'enter', and the command will execute, giving you an ICC profile which will now make Aperture use perceptual rendering.
There is just one further thing to be aware of after doing this: for some crazy reason, you then need to turn on BPC in Aperture for the prints to come out as good as possible. Black point compensation shouldn't make any difference when using perceptual rendering as the idea of perceptual is that it takes account of things like that anyway, however, in Aperture BPC does make a difference, so remember to turn it on to get a half decent print. In general, I find that prints made using this setup come out pretty well; they almost perfectly match prints made using the profiles with a perceptual intent in Photoshop Elements, except for the fact that Aperture blocks up the shadows a bit more than Photoshop. However, if you can live with that, you might find this is quite a workable solution.
Now, I said near the beginning of this post that all the above can apply to other printers too. Most printer profiles have 'perceptual' set as their default rendering intent, in which case everything I've just said won't be of much help. However, If you are reading this because you're having problems with ICC profiles in Aperture, but you don't use an Epson R2400, find your problematic ICC profile, double-click on it, and take a look at the window that opens: specifically, at the 'Rendering Intent' the window mentions. If it doesn't say 'Perceptual' then it may well be worth trying the steps I've outlined in this post to set it to perceptual, to see if doing so produces an improvement when using the profile in Aperture.
Finally, just one note of caution: if you decide to try out the steps I've detailed above on a paid-for custom-made profile, please back your profile up before messing with it. I haven't experienced any problems when using SIPS to change a profile's rendering intent, but I obviously can't guarantee that it won't do something weird and corrupt your expensive custom-made profile.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask, although (contrary to any impression I may give) I am not a colour-management expert; I'm just someone who doesn't give up when they have a problem that should be solvable.

Wow - thanks for such a comprehensive post.
I have Aperture and a 2400 so this information is exceptionally useful to me.
Again - thanks for caring and sharing

  • Possible 10.5.2 issue with ARD logout / System Monitor -unable to reconnect

Hi. Has anyone else seen this 10.5.2 problem with Apple Remote Desktop (ARD)/Server Monitor...
I have a Xserve G5 without a screen/keyboard and use ARD to connect to do any terminal administration.
I’ve been running Leopard since mid-January and on Sunday (17th February) I installed 10.5.2.
All appears to be fine, except…. I can use ARD to connect and do stuff on the server, HOWEVER when I logout I don’t get the login screen and can’t reconnect to the server using ARD (I get "Connection failed" error message). Plus, it also impacts Server Monitor as, after this, I can no longer re-connect to the server.
This is a real problem for me as the only way I can get ARD/login to re-connect is to re-boot the server by turning it off using the on-off button (which I don’t like doing as it could lead to disc corruption etc) and it’s a production server.

I've been having just the same problem. I can connect via ARD and log in but if I log out I'm stuck. Disconnecting without a log out works fine but if I log out remotely and watch the screen on the server itself then there is a spinner on a light blue screen indefinitely, suggesting that I never fully log out, and hence can never log back in.
With regard to forcing a reboot, I can still get in with ssh and issue a "sudo reboot" command (which will save your disc drives), but I'd rather not have to reboot every time I do any admin at all, and I'd rather not have to leave the console logged in.
Any suggestions or work-arounds gratefully received.
