Possible Workaround - AirPort Extreme Disk Utility not working in Windows

1) The only way I have managed to get Windows (in my case Vista) working with AE Disk Utility is to set it up using the "Assist Me" or "Manual Setup" with the Airport Utility with no special settings used to configure it.
2) Update the Station & let it restart.
3) On your Windows PC - Simply temporarily DISABLE your firewall until the next step is successfully completed. (I am using Norton 360).
4) Use the Airport Disk Utility to log on as either a Guest or User. (You should see the drive appear under Windows Explorer & see ALL the files it contains)
5) Re-enable the Firewall you have.
6) This works for me everytime & I am able to stay connected to my USB drive for as long as I want or I wish to disconnect it.
7) Repeat the above everytime you want to re-connect the drive to the Airport Extreme.
I am able to connect successfully using my MAC Mini & my Dell Laptop at the same time without conflict.
I know this is not an elegant solution, but until Apple get sort this out, it is failry easy to try.
I hope it works for you !
Enjoy :))

Well I fixed this. Get the AirPortBaseStationUpdate2007001.dmg update. I had installed this, but it didn't put in a few items that it should have. Mainly a little application in Core Servies. I used Pacifist to install the Airport Disk Utility again, and then restarted. I no longer got a beep when opening AD Utility, but I had to uncheck "Automatically discover disks" then turn off file sharing on the router, wait for it to restart, then turn file sharing back on, and then open AD Utility after restart and click Auto Discover. It then saw my disks. I also changed the name of the Windows Workgroup, I don't know if that had something to do with it. Good luck!

    Hi-
The last time I saw a similar problem to yours, he was also running Panther. I advised reinstalling the 10.3.9 combo update, and his woes were gone.

Another thought is to check System Preferences/CD's & DVD'S, and check your selection nuder "When you insert a blank CD" (or DVD).
Running Disk Utility from the install disk, and repairing permissions is also another possible fix.

  • Airport Disk Utility not working on Intel mac...

    Ok here's a new one...
I just got a new macBook (intel) to replace my 12inch G4. On the 12inch, Airport Disk Utility worked just fine recognizing my lacie drive hooked up to AEBS. I used a firewire cable to import settings to the intel macbook and that's when things went wrong.
On the new laptop, Airport Disk Utility gives me an alarm chime when I open it and no matter what I do, it won't see the drive. What's more, I can't even get the icon to show up in the menu bar (even though the drive shows up when I check the base station with the airport configuration utility). Whenever I check either one of the boxes, I get an alarm chime.
What's more the airport disk utility still works on the G4.
I've tried resetting the network, reinstalling stuff- I don't know what else to do. I don't know much about networking, but I wonder if importing the settings from the G4 is somehow the culprit or just something to do with it being intel?

  • Disk utility not working when upgraded to Yosemite

I have two MacBook pros (one is a mid 2010 13 inch and new Mid 2014 15 inch Retina), both of which disk utility stopped working when updated to OS X Yosemite from Mavericks. It says "You can't use this copy of Disk Utility with this version of OS X. Open the copy of Disk Utility located in the Utilities folder of the Applications folder of your startup disk." I was able to fix the old 13 inch by clearing the hard drive and pressing CMD+R to reinstall the OS but the new macbook I have not been able to fully clear the SSD. And for some weird reason my bootcamp partition on my 15 inch is being read as a totally separate hard drive instead as a partition.
Any help on totally erasing the hard drives and making them one is greatly appreciated!

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Airport disk utility not working

    Hi
I have just got myself a new airport base station (b,g,n) and all is nearly working well. I have an iBook g4 mini Mac g4 and an iMac Intel all working wireless no problem (all only on G). I have put a USB hard drive on the base station so that we can all share a network drive. I also have on the network 3 express stations for speakers and one has a printer on it as well. The printer is always ready for all to use and iTunes works on any or all systems through out the house. The problem being is that all 3 can map the network drive okay and use it fine, but after a while each will lose the drive and when I use airport disk utility to re-mount it, it comes with a window saying "action: ignore connect as guest or connect with password" I have set up with a disk password but it says incorrect user etc etc the password is correct and the only way to fix this is by rebooting the station.
    Any help on this

I upgraded to 7.1 and now all is fine

  • Windows 7 and Airport Extreme disk do not connect

I have three windows computers (XP, VISTA & 7) and one mac mini all sharing a drive connected to my airport extreme. I can access the drive fine with computers except windows 7.
My configuration on the airport was to prompt for a disk password, so I changed it to ask for username and password and I still cannot connect.
I have tried to map it via \\10.0.1.1\Disk and also \\extreme\Disk neither work.
I have been able to connect or at least it appears to connect by showing me the drive listed in windows 7, but none of the files are present. Windows xp and vista show the files fine and still can connect.

But currently have it working with the Win 7 defaults of:
    1) "Send NTLMv2 response only" for "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level"
    2) "Require 128-bit encryption" for "Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients"
also, my "Windows Search" is enabled.
I might end up revisiting these ideas though, because if I disconnect the network drive from the PC and then try to remap it, I run into some of the same problems that occurred in the initial troubleshooting - in other words I cannot just map the drive, need to reboot.
So the problem that I had in summary:
    - I had gotten the Airport Extreme shared USB drive to connect to the PC by first a reboot and then connecting via wireless to the Airport Extreme
    - If I disconnected from the shared drive on the PC, then I could not re-map it (I could get it back by the reboot / connect mentioned above): Windows was asking for "user name" and "password" when I went through the "Map network drive", following the ideas specified in "AirPort: How to mount an AirPort Extreme USB hard disk volume in Mac OS X and Windows" (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1331?viewlocale=en_US)
After more monkeying and searching around, I found that could fix this by:
1) On the PC, go to Start, type "advanced share" in the search box. This will take you to "Change sharing options for different network profiles" (can also get there by going to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings).
    2) Once there, go down to the bottom "Password protected sharing" and click "Turn off password protected sharing". Save your changes.
    3) Disconnect / reconnect to your Airport Extreme - I am doing it via the primary (non-guest) wireless.
Then, whenever I connect to the primary (non-guest) wireless on Airport Extreme, the share automatically maps itself. I can disconnect from it (the share) and it will disappear from under My Computer. To reconnect to it (the share), I just recycle the wireless connection. And, if I log on to the guest network, the share is not visible, which is how I would expect it to perform with my settings.
In Control Panel Microsoft describes "Password protected sharing" as:
When password protected sharing is on, only people who have a user account and password on this computer can access shared files, printers attached to this computer, and the Public Folders. To give other people access, you must turn off password protected sharing.
Maybe I am just tired from pounding away at this (yes, still using the "Monkey Theory" analogy - it is actually listed as the "Infinite monkey theorem" on Wikipedia if you want to read about it) but the whole thing still doesn't make much sense to me.
As far as why changing Network security policies may work for some and not others is a bit of a mystery. I did pursue this further and ran Wireshark while I changed these settings around. There were some differences in the "Negotiate Protocol Request" and "Negotiate Protocol Response" sequence, as would be expected but the end result for me was just keeping the default Win 7 values and making the changes mentioned above to get things working.
Otherwise, in Wireshark, I could just continually see as the PC got rejected for an attempt to logon to the share with its credentials, which I could not effectively change via the "Map network drive".
I also just ended up Turning off network discovery from the control panel (same location as mentioned above). Now, if I try to browse in the "Map network drive" , I get a popup that sates:
"Network discovery is turned off. Network computers and devices are not visible. Please turn on network discovery in Network and Sharing Center."
Yet, there is my nicely mapped Airport Extreme shared drive, sitting under My Computer, fully accessible and listed as a Network Drive. So, I am not sure what is really more baffling, the semantics or the technology that is at work underneath it.
I would love to hear if anyone else can get things working by doing any of the above.

  • Internet connection via Airport Extreme/router thats not working, why?

I have been having problems with the internet connection via Airport Extreme which I find it a bit unusual and its still driving me nuts! This is what happened:
I have lost my internet connection last Sunday evening upon my return from a weekend away from home. The last time I have used the internet connection on my macbook was the previous Friday morning. Prior to the apparent disconnection on Sunday, I have always used my internet connection wirelessly through Airport Extreme (that is connected via ethernet cable to the NETGEAR DG834v2 ADSL modem which had worked beautifully until the problem arose on my return). This wireless internet connection allowed me to surf the internet anywhere in my home.
However, upon the successful re-connection to the internet via the modem router, I have discovered several new problems. I have tried to set up the internet connection wirelessly again but instead the following happened:
    1. Router (Netgear) drops ADSL connection and cannot reconnect when connected to airport via Ethernet. (which is the case when using airport wireless).
    2. Router connects to ADSL fine when computer is connected to it via Ethernet. (However, router disconnects when magsafe power adapter is taken out for some inexplicable reason!)
    3. Router connects to ADSL fine when nothing is connected to the router (ie. No Ethernet connections)
    4. Router connects to ADSL fine when connected to airport via Ethernet and computer is connected to airport via Ethernet.
So from the above, I cannot connect to the internet properly whether wirelessly or not so I suspect it could be faulty router or could it be airport extreme? I have asked my ISP for an explanation and all they have said is that it cannot be the mis-configuration but could be to do with the power adaptors or the way plugs are set up and suggested I take out all the power plugs (and power surge protector) out to switch everything off, the macbook, router, printer and airport extreme. However, when I have re-plugged them all back in, the problems I have described above still persists!
Would appreciate any help if anyone here recognises why this is the case and what seems to be the cause of this. If so, what should I do? Though I have written back to my ISP again yesterday for more help so im waiting to hear from them...
    Thanks

  • Flashing Question Mark At Start Up/ Disk Utility Not Working

I am having the old flashing question mark in a file show up when I try to start my computer. I went through a lot of the forums and I have attempted the Disk Utility. When I put the 10.3 install disk in and restart it takes me to the opening screen. If go to disk utility and start it and I have three options: 734.6 MB Pioneer DVD, Session 1, and Mac OSX Install Disk all with a CD icon by them. Not sure which one to pick. Even when I select any though, it does not give me the option to push the repair disk button. It is never available. Anyone know what to do here?

Exactly this happened to me two weeks ago. Unfortunately in my case it was a result of hard disk failure - my heads had burnt out and I had total data loss (I was fortunately backed up recently).
I would suggest taking your mac to a reputable computer firm, preferably Apple who can diagnose hard disk failure immediately. If that is the case you will need a replacement HD, which might be a good opportunity to expand HD size on your system (prices are always coming down; I took the opportunity to go from 60 to 120GB, for £140).
If you are not backed up and ABSOLUTELY NEED YOUR DATA then do NOT give your machine to Apple there and then however; despite assurances, you may never see your HD again, and at any rate once it has been removed it should be handled extremely carefully to prevent platter damage and compromising future data retrieval. It may not be treated with proper respect whilst a replacement is being fitted. Therefore take it to a data retrieval specialist first, who may also replace the HD for you anyway, at similar or lower cost. The cost of data retrieval is very variable but is generally about £500 if an 'invasive procedure' (HD repair) is necessary.
I hope this isn't your situation, but as I say these were exactly the symptoms of my HD failure 2 weeks ago.

  • HT3546 Does the Airport Extreme Base Station not work with the OS X Lion?

Ever since updated to OSX Lion can't get our airport station to work.  Is it too old and won't work with this upgrade so do we need a newer airport?

Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion which should work with your older AirPort Extreme.
You can keep both AirPort Utility 6.1 and 5.6 on your Mac and use the one that you want or need at the time.

  • Airport Extreme USB Printing NOT working

I got an HP Photosmart 8450 connected thru USB to an Airport Extreme, version 7.3.2. On the other side, an iMAC. I can see the printer thru the airport utility, but just can't print. Printing thru airport USB port has always been a nightmare to me. When I connect the printer directly to the iMAC USB port it works just fine, but then I can't share with the rest of the computers at home..
    Any good hints from anyone?

G'Day, had the same problem wit hmy HP PSC2410. Go to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1253 and follow trouble shooting list. I had to do all of them before i could print wirelessly but it worked. Hope this helps.
It took me 10 days of frustration, and i was ready to throw the Airport, the imac, and the pc out the window, but one of the people from this discussion site posted this to me and it worked.
Let me know how you get on.

  • Airport Extreme/Time Capsule not working after downloading 7.6

Downloaded airport 7.6 last night and now time capsule/airport extreme doesn't work.  I can't even reset the tc to factory default settings.  Not sure what to do now.

Hi, today I got the same problem after 7.6 update for my Time Capsule. I tried to downgrade to 7.5.2, but afterwards the problem was not solved. Then I tried to set fixed channnels - and it works! For 2.4 Ghz I used channel 12 and for 5Ghz channel 48. Beforehand I used "automatic" for both. Hope it works for you too. I don't know, how Apple's test team spend the whole day ;-)

  • Disk Utility not working under cmd R mode

I upgraded my OS to 10.8.2. After doing so, when I do my normal system backup with Disk Utility, the system goes into sleep mode and the backup stops. I've done this many times in the past so I am not new to this.  I've read a few articles/posts with people having the same issue.  Why is apple not fixing this important bug?  I can't backup my system.  I have "verified disk" and it has no errors so that's not the issue.  The backup image starts to backup to my usb external drive then the screen dims and the system goes to sleep after about 5% and the flash drive stops flashing so it's not longer backing up.  When I press escape or any key, it resumes the backup but this takes hours.  I can't sit in front of the computer to keep moving my mouse.  HELP!!!
I use Disk Utility 13.  I reboot and press Command R and then use the Disk Utility from there. I don't want to use Time Machine.  It slows my system too much.

You need automatic, frequent backups that don't require you to shut down the system, and that preserve some history. Using Disk Utility in Recovery is good for backing up a system that won't boot, or when preparing to erase and restore a volume, but what happens if you delete a file and then decide a week or a month later that you needed it?

  • Disk Utility not working from Recovery HD.

I've got a brand new top of the line Late 2013 MacBook Pro (2.6GHz, 16GB RAM, 1TB HD).  This is my first Mac and I need to run Windows as well so I have done a lot of playing with Boot Camp, Parallels, and VMWare fusion.  Including the use of CampTune for resizing the boot camp partition.  Somehow I got it into a state where CampTune wouldn't run because it says the partitions need to be repaired.  When I ran Disk Utility from within OS X, it said I needed to boot into Recovery and use Disk Utility there.  However, in Recovery, Disk Utility won't launch.  When I choose it, it starts to start up and shows "Gathering Disk Information", then returns to the Recovery Menu.  The next thing I tried was restoring a Time Machine backup.  That ended up saying it was going to take 48 hours so I killed it.  At this point the Mac partition doesn't show up in the recovery boot menu but it does show up in Windows running from the Boot Camp partition.
    What I'd like to do.
    1. Recreate the Mac partition / reinstall OS X, preserving the existing boot camp partition.
    2. Install Parallels and convert the boot camp partition to a VM.
    3. Blow away the Boot Camp Partition and extend the mac partition to the full hard drive (1TB).
    4. Use Windows via Parallels.
But I can't even get it to run Disk Utility or Reinstall OS X from the Recovery Menu at this point.  Can this be done from the command line?  I see you can use terminal from the Recovery partition.
Alternativey I can resotre the boot camp partition from a backup so if there is a way to just level set the thing to stock that would work too.

    Ouch! What a mess!
By the sound of things you will need to be in a fast wi-fi area and reinstall via Internet recovery.
Restart your Mac whilst pressing and holding Commmnad+Option+R keys - enter your wi-fi password and then enable the Internet Recovery mode.
It will delete your current bootcamp if you erase your disk and reinstall but at least you can recreate that later.

  • Disk Utility not working on Yosemite

    Hello all,
Since updating to the latest OS X Yosemite I've noticed that Disk Utility no longer works. I use Spotlight to search for "Disk Utility" or click on the file within the "Utilties" folder but yet it still brings up the following error message:-
Any suggestions on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have two versions of Disk Utility available to use. Did you clean install? Are you running separate partitions with different OS X systems? Search with spotlight and choose show in finder at the bottom of the list. Double click the Finder Ikon in the main window, this will open a finder window with all the search results. Applications should be your top hit. If you have two Disk Utility's showing, Single click on each and the path for each will be displayed in the bottom bar of the Finder window. Or Command-I will bring up the info window on each one.
    Hope this helps.

  • Airport Extreme and Express not working well together

I recently got a new Airport Extreme, but still want to use my Airport Express'es to play music throughout my house via airtunes. The problem is that it seems that I can't see the Express anymore - they aren't showing up in the airport utility at all. (Using the recent updated Version 5.1 (510.18)). Anyone with any ideas?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Had the same issue. The AirPort Express is still looking for the old base station and it's network. (I'm assuming that you upgraded from an old base station). The way I remedied the situation was to do a hard rest on the AirPort Express and run the setup assistant included in the new AirPort software. When I just tries the setup assistant without resetting the AP Express I got nowhere.
    give it a try.
