Power cut / itunes update leads to itunes memory loss :-(

I am running a mac mini only 6 months old with 2.5ghz intel I5 Core.
Where i live we suffer many power cuts. Everything was working fine with itunes, but now itunes is having real issues with locating many of my files.
I have around 260gb in music altogether, and after using itunes for many years, i have spent a lot of time making smart playlists to organise everything just the way i like it. All my favourite songs i have spent time giving them 5 star ratings so Itunes knows to put them in the "My Top Rated" smart folder.
I keep my music on an external 1Tb hard drive. Itunes knows where the folder is located via preference settings.
After a recent spurt of power cuts, followed by an unrelated external had drive failure (only movies), i went back to my mac and discovered that around 30% of my music was missing. This was indicated by small exclamation marks placed just to the left of the individual track names in itunes.
Off course, the first thing i did was panic, but my fears were soon put to rest, when i checked the master file on my extrenal hard drive where the itunes folder is located, the files were still there.
When i try to play the selected file, the message :- " the song "______" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
i have 2 main issues here:-
1. Itunes will only let you locate individual files at a time, if i have to locate 30% of 260gb, i will still be till next year.
2. when i follow the option to locate, find the file and click open, Itunes crashes after hanging some time.
I can dump all itunes indexing files and copy my master itunes file (all 260gb) onto another drive, then delete itunes application and reinstall, but i will loose all my playlists and 5 star ratings. I am also concerne about song degradation which can happen when copying files. I have many Flac converted files which are 320kbps.
I have read on the apple.com itunes windows forum that there is a script to locate missing files, is there a similair method for mac?
Is there another method for Itunes to reindex the complete folder where the music is located without loosing smart playlists and 5 star ratings?
Any help appreciated.

If iTunes is busy saving the library file (which it does frequently) and there is power loss then the file can become corrupt.  This can cause links to be broken, and if the library file is corrupt enough it will cause iTunes to freeze.
Your solution is to back up your library (especially the library.itl) frequently so you have good copy from which to start, and buy a power source backup.  The other things about which you are asking are not real long-term solutions giving the conditions you describe.
There isn't any script for repairing links on Mac. You can check Dougscripts web site.  There was one there but it wasn't highly successful from my reading of it.  iTunes itself has a minor repair links feature built into it whereby if you find one link it will ask if you want to try to find others based on the same criteria.  If that isn't working then that's as far as it goes.
I'm not too clear what you mean about song degradation in copying files. Yes, any file copying can theoretically cause error, but there are also error checking routines.  Still, even just leaving files on a drive can cause errors as sectors suddenly go bad.
The main problem you have is computers are not designed to survive frequent abrupt shutdown.  Macs aren't too bad and last night we had a sudden shutdown twice and my computer started up fine both times (hats off the Apple). You need to deal with that problem and your iTunes will not corrupt as frequently.  I have been using my library since the early 2000s and never once had it go corrupt on me.

I ran an itunes update, but now itunes won't open as it says it hasn't been installed correctly. How do I reinstall it?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • HT1222 I installed the most recent ITunes update after which Itunes no longer worked.. I received an error message   Error 7  Windows 193.  I did a system restore to eliminate the update.

Apple support had not responded to my requests for clarification.  The update corrupted both ITunes and Office Outlook mobileme.  The error message when I tried to start up I Tunes was Error 7 Windows 193.  I un installed I Tunes and re installed the latest ver and encountered the same error message.  I finally did a system restore.  Was this a one time problem or is the update bad.  In over 30 years I'd never had a problem with any Apple update.

  • ITunes update trashed my itune.  Get error messages. Can't burn to CD

    Windows XP Home SP3 on a Dell Pentium 4. 2G RAM. iTunes 10.3.1.55. iPod 4 Gen (32G)
I got the recent iTunes update request from Apple two days ago and downloaded/installed.  Got a Windows Warning that the install had not passed the Windows Logo testing for XP, but accepted anyway as Apple said the update was for my computer.  When I reopened iTunes I got the following warning:
ITunes connects with my iPod and it can read an import audio CDs, but it cannot burn a playlist to a CD.  It says no audio CD found.  I did a CD/DVD diagnostic test, inserted a prerecorded CD as requested and got the following screen:
I quit iTunes and did a System Restore with no discernable change.  I then tried to do a Repair of iTunes.  Near the end of the Repair cycle, the following
    screen came up:
I have done at least a dozen Repairs, Uninstall/Reinstalls including the complete Uninstall including QuickTime, Bonjour, etc. as per the Apple Knowledge base.  I have done the uninstall of Gear software using both the manual method and the uninstall software tool on their site (Note that the registry entries and files that they said need to be removed, did not exist on my computer).  Each time I tried the reinstallation (both of Gear and iTunes), I got the above message concerning the DVD/CD-ROM drives software not being verified for XP.
I am at my wits' end here.  Can anyone save me.

Follow these instructions to completely remove Apple software
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Then use free Ccleaner to repeatly repair your registry until it's fixed.

    download iTunes again from Apple.

If you have 64bit Vista or Windows 7, look for the seperate download of iTunes for that further down the page.
Once installed, use the Apple Software Update under your Start Menu to fully update all Apple components.
Your content will remain on the drive in the Music > iTunes Folder, nothing is deleted.
You should be making backups of your content regularly, either through iTunes or via copying the iTunesFolder in your Music folder to a external drive.

  • Latest itunes update corrupted my itunes!  Tried to download itunes and computer won't accept it!!

Just updated itunes to latest version.  After update, installed, I tried going into itunes and it was corrupt and stated to download itunes again.  Tried that and it failed.  Itunes will not install on my pc.  Up until the itunes update, ALL WAS WELL!

My previous version of iTunes was working fine!  Then, I attempted to download the latest version now 3 times with it failing each time.  I got the corruption error message one time and it hung up two times.  Now I have no iTunes!  This is the first time that I have ever had a serious download problem.  Something must be wrong with the Apple software.

  • ITunes Update: Cannot Locate iTunes.msi

I am currently attempting to update my iTunes to the most recent version (I believe it is 10.5.11).
However, I am currently stuck due to a popup during the installation process which states that I need to locate the "iTunes.msi" file.
If I press cancel, iTunes is not able to complete the installation process because "cannot uninstall the previous version of iTunes".
I have read through several discussions which states to download Microsoft Fixit and run the program which should detect this problem
and fix it automatically.  When I run this program, it cannot find a problem and states everything is okay.  In addition, I tried to uninstall
iTunes manually through my control panel, but the same problem as above occurs.  It cannot locate "iTunes.msi".  I am getting very
frustrated with this issue because I have an iPhone and would like to update my songs but my iTunes will not function properly.
I am currently running Windows XP.
Thank you in advance for your time and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select anyiTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • I installed the latest iTunes update. Now iTunes won't recognize my iPod. I tried every step in the trouble-shooting list and nothing works. Apple wants to charge me $35 just to ask them a question. What should i do?

I have tried every step in the trouble-shooting list, and nothing helps. What should I do?

I am having this same issue.  I have avoided updating it for months and now that I finally did this is what happens!!  My Ipod goes into charge mode, but then as soon as iTunes opens up to sync it says it knows there is an ipod connected but does not recognize it and it will stop charging and just go to the main screen that comes up when you turn ipod on.  I even tried Uninstalling and reinstalling like it says and that doesn't work.  When I uninstall it, it will let my ipod charge when I connect it to computer.  But as soon as I install iTunes again and try to connect it, it tells me the same thing.  Now I know why I never update to newer versions, so angry right now.  Apple needs to fix this problem cause I've had my ipod for less than a year!!

  • Why do itunes updates always break itunes? Everytime.

Nearly everytime theres an update for itunes, it breaks itunes. "Itunes can't start because msvrc80.dll is missing." Really? it was there a minute ago, before the update. How do I know? Because itunes was actually open and running when i performed the update. Is there some way to turn off update notifications? Cuz now I have to uninstall all apple products in order to re-install itunes.
Whats wrong with you people? Haven't you heard of testing your software before you release it?

There is no better way, and there is no fixing of links in batch mode, sadly.
Well, Apple recently added the capability in the Windows COM interface so that you can modify the file path of an iTunes track from an external program. So it is possible, but AFAIK no program exists to do it. I wanted to write a program to help people out who've moved stuff from one drive to another or one folder to another, but basically kept the path the same.
Unfortunately, if a track is already "broken", I can't read the old path via the COM interface (I asked for this, but they didn't oblige :'( ) ; I would have to read the old path from the XML file. I also cannot use the new capability to MOVE a file -- another enhancement I asked for but did not get. Baby steps, right?
If I was a better programmer I would write something that searches a folder you specify and attempts to match it up to the dead tracks in the Library. Alas, someone with more experience and education (and time) will have to do it!

  • Cannot download newest version of iTunes, Updater has damaged iTunes install

I ran iTunes a few days ago and it told me there was a new version.  So, I started to download it via the Apple updater software.  Well, it failed.  And failed.  I then went to the iTuens website to just manually grab the installer.  And it says it's trying, but I never get the notice that the file is downloading.  And now, iTunes will not start.  I think I have an old installer somewhere, but it will do this again the moment I start iTunes.  Is this a know issue currently?  Is there a fix for now, or do we just have to wait?

It is known here on the forums, but there is no official "fix". However there is an effective user tip by tt2 that will help you here: Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates
