Power Mac G5 FireWire Problems

None of my FireWire ports work on my Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz. When I go into the System Profiler and select "FireWire" under the "Hardware" option I get the error message "Unable to list FireWire devices" ... Has anyone had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! Try resetting the pmu/smu as per THIS or THIS for an earlier model G5. Tom

Lacie Speakers and Mac Pro Firewire problem waking from sleep and loud feedback. I had a powermac before this with the speakers and it worked fine. But the mac pro is having these issues. Is it the firewire port or the speakers or (and most likely) just a firmware glitch with mac pro? Anyone else see these issues?

Here is my audio settings. For some reason I wish I could remember what I did. It was actually the Apple Store tech in the Unversity Village in Seattle that gave me the idea and I swear I had to change the settings in MIDI setup. Now that Leopard is out it seems the MIDI stuff has been redone. I included screenshots of my MIDI setup as it is currently to see if you see something different on your computers. Let me know!

  • Power Mac G4 sleep problem

    Hello!
My G4 (mdd) won't go to sleep anymore. Neither on its own via energy saver nor when you press the power button or select sleep in the apple menu. Does anyone know what to do?
I already unplugged my USB devices, didn't help. Then I trashed my energy saver and bluetooth preferences and reset PRAM by pressing <commandoption+PR> at startup, no luck. I read all the previous posts about this issue and did everything they said, but it didn't help.
maybe someone has an additional suggestion.
    Thank you!
    David
Power Mac G4 (mdd) 867 dual   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.3.9 combo update. Others here would use the one for their version.
    Cheers!

  • Power Mac G4 Display Problem

I own a Power Mac G4 Digital Audio 733MHz model, and an Apple Flat Panel monitor.
The monitor connects using ADC. Sometimes when I boot my Power Mac the power light appears on the display, but the display screen does not turn on. Rebooting the Power Mac will make the display come back to life.
A while back someone in the Apple Forums suggested replacing the PRAM battery.
I tested the PRAM battery, and it is fine.
I opened up the Power Mac case, and see that the AGP card is properly seated.
What would most likely be the problem? Would it be the display, the video card, or the logic board?
    Thanks!

Just an update, I tried a different LCD Display with a VGA connector and it works fine.
It must be the Apple Display.

  • Power Mac G4 Firewire stopped working

I've got a Power Mac G4 from a friend to replace my broken G3, have my drive installed, runing system 9 and is fine for few weeks but now the two firewire port is not working! I have installed a firewire card and is still not showing! had check the system profiler and the firewire port say no drive conected, PCI slot show card info but can't see any drive conected. Have done the vram and pmu reset but firewire still not responding. Otherwise everything is running normal including two USB port.     Can anyone help please!!

Many, but not all G4s will boot OS9.2.2, & some require a special version of OS9.
If the G4 has FW/800 ports it won't boot OS9.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD problems with Hardware test Memory errors

I have been troubleshooting slowness and unexplained lockups on my Power Mac G4 MDD. I've had the system since 2002. I tried to run hardware test (the disk that came with my system), and I get an error message at startup:
Invalid Memory Access at %SRRO: 00034870
    %SRR1: 00003030
I run mac-boot, and get another memory error
    Invalid Memory Access at:
    %SRRO: 056106dc
    %SRR1: 00003030
Does this mean my memory has gone bad? I don't get any other screens for testing hardware.
The lockups are varied, but many seem to deal with Safari. I have also repaired disk permissions and repaired disk. I then get security error messages when I restart, and I choose to fix them, and things are fine for a while, but then it slows down some and starts locking up again.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Marbot61

    Hi Marbot61,
You might be interested in the thread "error when booting from AHT CD" on this forum. Since four different users have had the same error message in two days, perhaps ram chips are actually ok, and there is something else going on with the AHT CD boot process.

  • Seagate 7200.9 500GB internal hard drive in Power Mac G4 Firewire 800?

Thank you for the very helpful discussions on adding storage.
I want to add storage to my Mac G4 'silver door' FW 800, running OSX 10.4.11. It has a (very full) 110 GB Toshiba as it's original drive, plus a clunky Maxtor 80 GB external USB drive I've used for backup.
Due to photos and videos, mostly from documenting garden projects and creating documents about them, my drives are filling fast. I want a long term solution - and don't feel like purchasing a new computer any time soon (We're a non-profit, who can afford it these days?)
    My questions are:
I think I prefer using the internal option, since the G4 is set up to expand easily. Comments? An external 500 gb firewire drive isn't that much more expensive (~$40)
If I chose to add an internal drive, one reasonable choice seems to be a 500GB Seagate 7200.9 PATA (that's my interface, not SATA). The price is right. Will it work without problems with my G4 FW800? (The Seagate site and documents say it's Mac compatible, the box doesn't. Most online Mac vendors seem to carry the Seagate 7200.10.)
Do I need to worry about the SSC issues some Mac users have faced with Seagate drives, or does that only apply to SATA drives? Do I need to carefully read the serial number of the product, to avoid -301, which have SSC enabled and thus won't work with Apple controllers?
Will I need to buy a different cable? Or can I just plug it into the cable in the Mac (it seems set up to easily add another drive)?
Will I need to worry about BIOS limitations, or is there any other reason I might end up buying 500GB but only be able to use 137 GB? Or does the fact that my Mac already has an ultra ATA/100 solve that problem? Seagate talks about an ultra ATA/133 card - will I need to install that to avoid problems? How will that affect my existing Toshiba drive that will be bear some kind of 'master/slave' relationship to the new drive (it connects via ultra ATA/100 PATA).
If I have to get such a card, would it make more sense to simply get a SATA card? How will that affect cables and ease of installation?
If going above a certain GB size (~137 GB) will give my Mac major heartburn, should I stay under that limit for the internal drive?
Too many questions ! Sorry, moderator! But I've only got two more: I'd like to boot off my new drive, and make my existing drive the "slave". Is that relatively easy to do? Has anyone done that? Should I first hook things up as Apple and Seagate both suggest, with the original drive as Master, first?
Thanks! My questions probably show my blind spots and conceptual weaknesses - if it is clear I'm going down the wrong road, let me know.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
In a summed up answer to all of your questions; Yes, the Seagate drive will be a wonderful, compatible, fully usable, plug and play in the second drive position, addition to the internals of your tower.
No size limitations, no BIOS worries, no need for a controller card, no new cables......
Install the drive and connect to the end connector of the ATA/100 IDE cable. Make sure both drives are jumpered to Cable Select (link applies to FW800 models). The drive on the end connector will be the boot drive by cable select default. Use Disk Utility to format the new drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and you're ready to use the drive as you see fit.
The easiest transfer of data, OS , applications, etc., will be to use a cloning utility such as SuperDuper! or CCC. Clone the old drive to the new drive, and you will have your previous system as is, only all on the new drive. Check the operation/integrity of all applications/data, and when satisfied, the old drive may be erased to be relegated to different use.

  • Mac Pro Firewire Problems

I use an external Firewire 800 drive for Time Machine and a MOTU 828 mkII Audio Interface (Firewire 400) on my new (refurb) Mac Pro. Everytime I shutdown, restart or sleep the Mac Pro, I lose Firewire connection to either the drive, the audio interface or both. Unplugging and replugging the firewire cables usually doesn't work and I'll have to restart the Mac until it recognizes the firewire devices. Regardless of what start-up procedure I use (firewire plugged in before or after), it's hit or miss. Usually once it's recognized, it's stable. Oddly, the firewire devices show up in System Profiler even if they aren't recognized elsewhere - desktop for the drive or Audio Midi Setup for the audio interface. On my old G5 with Tiger, the same drive and audio interface worked perfectly and I could turn them on or off at anytime and have them be instantly recognized.
I have seen posts about similar problems both here and on other boards. Has anyone got to the bottom of this problem? Is it my Mac Pro or is it a Leopard bug? Just curious before I make the call to Apple.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my first post. I have the audio interface plugged into the rear firewire 400 port and the backup drive plugged into the rear firewire 800 port. No daisy-chaining involved and strictly just those two firewire devices. I'm going to do some testing with using the front ports and see if that makes a difference. Thanks.

  • POWER MAC G3 FireWire Issue--Where to go?

I can't believe there's no place in the Discussions for blue and white Power Macintosh G3s. If you can talk about a 400MHz G4, I don't see why we're left out.
My issue: has anyone ever succesfully used Target Disk Mode with a PowerMac G3? I have tried it between two of them--never worked once; between G3 and G4, no dice. PowerBooks--nothing. Supposedly you can do TDM from OS 9 to OS X but I can't get two identical machines to see each other. I have 16 of them and it works on none of them None seem to need the FireWire updates either.

    Hi, Toolshed -
Firewire TDM is pretty much independent of the OS. However, it is dependent on the hardware of the machine being able to support it.
All Macs which have built-in firewire are capable of being the Host machine in FwTDM. However, not all such are capable of being the Target machine - specifically, the B&W G3 and the G4 (PCI) models do not support being the Target machine. Probably not a coincidence, both of those models are also not capable of booting to firewire.
Thomas Bryant provided the link to the applicable KBase article fpr FwTDM in his post above.

  • Dual 2.3 Power Mac G5 sleeping problem

For sometime now my G5 has had a sleeping problem. I use evetv 500 to record tv shows. Most times I have been on the computer say 5 to 6 pm. I'll have it set to record at 7. The G5 will start up and record no problem, but the monitor will not go back to sleep, the whole system is almost locked up . I have found that the computer clock will be stuck at the time I let it sleep. If I move the mouse the clock will update, and the system will sleep.
    Thanks for any help
    Dual 2.3 G5 PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi,
I've experienced something similar a bit now and then. The most recent occurense of this was just a few minutes ago. Last thursday (june 21st), I set my Mac to record one show at 21.00 and one recording at 18.00 (every weekday on the 18.00 one), both recordings are one hour each. The ordinary "sleep when idle" function doesnt seem to work properly but I still set it at 15 minutes plus a scheduled sleep at 22.08. Now when just I came home the Mac was on though it shouldnt be. iStat in Dashboard gave me these figures:
    Uptime 0d 4h 22min, up since 8.35 june 21
The only reaction I got when I tried to check the sleepsettings was a message telling me that the computer was scheduled to go to sleep in 9mins 55sec's and the System Preferences panel just bounced in the dock, every app that I tried to start just bounced in the dock. When I tried to restart it I got a message, after a while, telling me that Eyetv was keeping my Mac from going to sleep and trying to force quit it didn't seem to make much change. I finally turned the Mac off by pressing the powerbutton on the front.
I got the 18.00 recording on thursday but not on friday and no 21.00 recording from thursday. I thought the scheduled sleep would override the other setting...

  • Power Mac G4 (AGP) Problems booting up.

When I turn on my Mac it starts normally but when it gets to the apple logo screen it stays there for about 5 minutes then transitions into a blue screen where I can see my mouse in the upper left hand corner but not move it. My Mac never gets past the blue screen. I'm new to Macs, so any input would be helpful.
    Thanks,

    Hi-
Try starting in Safe Mode. Hold the Shift key while starting. If successfully booted to Safe mode, restart, and the machine should start normally.
If not, there are possible Startup or Login item problems.
    Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items
The startup problem could also be caused by directory problems on the hard drive. Boot to the OS X install disc (hold C while starting) and open Disk Utility in the Menu bar in the pane after the language selection pane. In Disk Utility, select your Startup drive, and select "Repair Disk".

  • Power Mac - G4 QuickSilver and dial-up problem..

Hi all, first post here please excuse my naiviety!
As well as owning a Macbook I've been helping a friend out with their 9-10 yr old G4 Power Mac. The problem started with it not being able to power on so I tried resetting CUDA etc; that didn't work so I sourced a replacement Power Mac (power supply being impossible to replace).
All went well, swapped the HD out of his duff M5183 and put it into the newer QuickSilver. Booted-up fine and apart from running quicker it looked like his old Mac. When he tried dial-up (he can't get BB) he kept getting a no dial tone error. So I had a fiddle and managed to get a tone... however when the 0845 number was dialled all you get is a beep....beep....beep noise like the line's engaged or unobtainable. I managed to inadvertently wipe his ISP settings so tried another ISP (called freeisp, 0844 7110059) - still get the same reply on the line with this.
Question is, I'm guessing the modem on the QuickSilver is different to that on the M5183? Do I need to install drivers? The modem seems to dial out okay so I'm a bit confused.
Any help gratefully rec'd... he hasn't been able to get online for some time now.

    According to this article:
Apple USB Modem: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Sep 15, 2008 ... You can use an Apple USB modem with any
Mac computer capable of running Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later.
You MUST have Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3152
Even email and sparse internet activity would be slow.
Still, that invites further research to be sure; and also to
check what update or upgrade the computer hardware
may need to be ready for the demands of the OS on it.
Hardware upgrades in RAM chip & hard disk drives are
the primary ones for basic physical upgrade; and then
the OS X. And Panther is not really adequate today...
Tiger has support; Panther has increasingly more wants
that are not met and does not see updates. It's rather old.
You should check into the available "retail boxed" Tiger
full installer sets that have previously been sold to people
and now those persons have upgraded to Leopard 10.5.
These should be priced less than online reseller's retail.
In some places, the universal install DVD set is not costly
once you get away from the retail demand. Amazon is a
source of retail goods; ebay is a place to find retail prices.
Individuals, whose goods you would have to be aware of
before buying (or if given a retail box Tiger installer DVD,
be informed as to what you really had.) Be sure it is NOT a
version made for a single model or series of computer,
since those would only work in that one model line.
Without access to DSL or faster cable broadband, getting
all the update bits for the system would be prohibitive; no
matter the version of OSX (or any OS) it would be too slow.
You may be able to get copies of the correct downloads
from persons you know; but you have to be sure they are
the correct ones, and not versions for some other device.
(Some update files are for Intel-based Mac, not PPC-based.)
If you have a portable computer, a list of upgrade downloads
needed (for a needy desktop computer) and a place to go and
experience fast broadband or adequate DSL, the necessary
update files a new OS X installation would require to be up to
date could be gotten; they could be saved to a CD for later use.
The latest security update, all the java updates, the Combo update,
Quicktime, Flash player, Shockwave Player, modern browsers, &
other items are required to bring even Tiger up to today's web
and daily use if going online (or if using applications needing it.)
With a list of needed applications, and/or web sites where the
downloads could be acquired, and getting 'standalone' versions
for later use in a computer later, one can deal with a slow web
access point at home, by going elsewhere to get the essentials.
And to get them with the idea of making a backup archive for
later re-install should that event of necessity occur. The Apple
Support Downloads site has OS X related updates & is search-
able. So knowing file names to do this, that way, is important.
Having the subject computer at the point where high speed
internet is available makes all kinds of sense, to just update
the newer OS X version and make it work correctly.
And the need for this would become painfully clear to even
someone with no credible amount of experience. Anyone
with hopes of getting a task done in their lifetime could see it.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Netgear wg311t in Power Mac G4 MDD FW400

I'm trying to figure out a way to network my Power Mac G4 without running a long ethernet cable through the house. The cable modem and wireless router are downstairs in the living room (the only cable hookup in the house). The office with the Power Mac is upstairs. There's also my MacBook Pro (Early 2008), which I am currently networking to the Power Mac via firewire. The Power Mac gets its internet connection through the MBP. Of course, the MBP comes and goes, so I don't want to rely on it for a network connection for the Power Mac. Furthermore, I have a networked (ethernet) HP laserjet that I'd like to have on the network. Here is what I have:
A Netgear WG311T PCI wireless adapter that I used in a Windows machine a couple years ago. If I could get this to work in the Power Mac, I could connect the HP printer directly to the Power Mac and share the printer that way. This is an Atheros-based card, and no Mac OS drivers were ever released by Netgear. I've messed around with some kernel extensions trying to get the operating system to recognaize the card, but haven't had any success. The annoying thing is, I own the Orangeware driver that could work (I had a Netgear card in my PowerMac G4 that required it), but Orangeware doesn't exist anymore, so I can't register the serial number, so I can't use the driver for more than 10 minutes at a time.
A Netgear WPN824 v2 that was my wireless router before I got the WNDR3300 (I think that's the model). I tried to use this as a wireless access point, but you have to network it via ethernet to the other router, which doesn't help me at all. It won't work as a repeater - only v3 does that.
The Power Mac is the firewire 400 version, not firewire 800, so the fastest Airport card I can put in it is wireless-B. No way.
I have a USB 2 PCI card in the Power Mac, so I could buy a USB wireless-N adapter. I'd like to avoid buying anything else, though.
    Any suggestions?

  • Hey, I'm fixing up a Power Mac G5 for a friend, he gave me a Cinema HD 30' display to use with it. My problem is, the Power Mac G5 doesn't have a place where I can plug in one of the display's cords. the cord is called a "DC power (24.5 V)"

So the Cinema HD's DVI goes in fine, I don't remember what video card is in the computer, all I know is it's Nvideo, it's old, only like 256MB, but does have two DVI ports. Anyway, then the display's firewire and USB can go in. But there's this weird thing, had to do some research to figure out what the connector/cord is called. it's the size of a USB, rectangular with oval sides. It's called a "DC power (24.5 V)" I'm like, what the heck is this thing? it won't go into the computer anywhere, I'm assuming I need some sort of adapter?? Help please, if I need an adapter or video card, links would be extremely helpful.
    Best regards,
    Poly

I don't believe so, I have a DVI to ADC adapter I was messing with, my DVI from the display plugs into the adapter, then i grap the adapter's ADC connector, and it does not go into my Power mac G5's video card. So that confirms that the display is DVI, and works with my DVI video card perfectly. It's just the one wire/connector that apple calls the "DC power (24.5 V)" that won't go in anywhere. Basically the display has a DVI connector, firewire connector, and USB, which all go into my Power mac G5 fine. However, it has another wire with a connector that won't go in anywhere, from what I've read off the teach specs of my Cinema HD 30' that final connector/wire is listed as "DC power (24.5 V)"
So my problem is with that. I have NO idea what it does, or goes into. When I google "DC power (24.5 V) Apple" it comes up with weird images none of which have that connector. So I'm just so. Confused.
