Power Outages

Does fios monitor power outages?

Could you be more specific?
Do you mean power outages at the CO?  Of course.
If you mean power outages at your home, then the answer is "It depends".
The BBU does report loss of AC power to the ONT.
The ONT maintains an event log than can be retrieved by network techs.
If the power outage exceeds the run time of the BBU, the ONT will reboot and clear the logs when power comes back on.

  • Cannot login to my usual account after power outage

Had two power outages last night; machine survived the first one, but after the second outage and restoration I cannot get in to my usual user account. What happens:
    Grey apple screen, normal
Blue screen with progress bar indicating that OS X is loading... before the indicator fills all the way to the right, it exits to a blue screen [of death] with a mouse cursor (which works) and just stays there. It goes no further. Rebooting obviously does not fix it; I rebooted a dozen times trying to get beyond that.
What I've tried that hasn't fixed it:
    Rebooting
Unplugging and replugging, both computer side and wall
Repairing both the disk and permissions--done, no effect
Safe booting and attempting to log into the account under a safe boot--it loads the wallpaper and hangs right there, no dock, no menu loaded
    Removing the User/~ Preferences folder
I believe that what is causing the problem is some login startup item. However, since I cannot even log in in Safe mode, I can't start the System Preferences Accounts panel to remove login items.
Question: Is there another way to remove the login startup items? Removing the Preferences folder has not helped. I'm missing something. What is it?
I can log in to any other user account. I am currently in Root.

From the root account, open the Accounts pane of System Preferences and delete the login items for your normal account; an admin account should be able to do this for any account on the system, while non-admin accounts can only be used to change their own login items.
If removing the login items does not fix the issue, remove other parts of the home folder until you are able to log in to that account. If you've removed/renamed the entire home folder and aren't able to log in successfully, check that the permissions on the hard disk allow all accounts to read it; if you still can't successfully log in to that account, restore a previous version of the NetInfo database.

  • What can happen to an intel-based iMac when a power outage occurs while it is on and I unplug it to avoid a surge when power comes back?

The power went out today, while I was using my intel-based iMac (2008) and I rushed to unplug the power from the wall, before the poser could surge back on. Did I do damage?
I have a surge protector that it was plugged into, but I thought just to be safe I should unplug!
    Thanks, Group!
    artdough

    Good point!
Art a surge protector (a good one) is designed to provide contant power to the devices that are plugged into it. This is good in the event of a surge of power up or down however in the event of a complete power outage they're of no value.
A UPS (Uninteruptable Power Supply) is just that, it has surge protection like a surge suppresor however it also has a battery integrated into it. The battery is designed to provide enough power for a user to do an orderly shutdown. In addition most UPS's can also plug into your iMac via a USB cable. Then you can set energy saver preferences that you cannot see now. For example you can set how long the computer should run in the event of power going off. You can also set if you want the computer to reboot or not when the power comes back on etc. For about $100 you can get a fine UPS that will add an additional layer of protection for your computer and give you extra peace of mind.

  • Power Supply blows a fuse, Ext Soundcard power outages, Time Machine.

Power Supply blows a fuse, Ext Soundcard momentary power outages. Time Machine won't backup.
    Ok here's my setup
Mac Book Pro 13" APRIL 2011 latest firmware. 8GB RAM. Surge Protected mains connection..
M-AUDIO FIREWIRE SOUNDCARD AUDIOPHILE most recent drivers and powered by the MacBooks Firewire Out using a NEET Pro Lead,
The M-Audio has 2 x Firewire Ports and I take one  to a 2TB 7800rpm Iomega iMedia Drive which daisy chains to a 1TB FireWire Seagate HardDrive and yes both are Pre Powered and formatted for Time Machines exclusive use.
The M-Audio Firewire module can be pre powered but isn't for this reason, the FireWire Out from the Mac IS pre powered, and I'm using a good quality NEET lead that powers the Audiophile ok over the last few months. I have been warned by the manual if I add a power supply to a pre powered firewire chain I could damage equipment, I'm now running the the screen as low as possible and the backlit keys off to minimise power drain, I also use an Acer 24" Monitor with a NEET DV mini port to HDMI adaptor and it's been working great but this must be more power drain on the power supply, One of the USB ports goes to an Native Instruments Maschine Sampler Module, the other goes to a Pre Powered 4 Port USB Hub and that has been fine, it has 1 Axiom 25 USB Midi Keyboard, 2 Pre Powered Hard Discs 1 Portable USB Drive. Now the problems started with Time Machine it can't backup and I get Hard Disk Unsafe Disconnects and Failed Time Machine Backups and Now my Soundcard does the same in that it momentarily disconnects and reconnects in a second, in Settings under ENERGY SETTINGS I've set hard drives to Never Shut Down, and the Screen also, it's been more frequent, then a fuse blows in the Power Supply without tripping up my Surge Protector Socket pfft! just great, well it is only a 3AMP Fuse in the Plug Socket but it saved my MacBook!, ok checks Mains, yes it's old, and I've started using the Central Heating alot now and when it turns on it could be causing a power surge, same with the FridgeFreezer. Things i've tried, on the Seagate pre powered FireWire Hardisc I have switched the Firewire lead to its second FW port, I got no errors with Time Machine this time, not 100% it's done yet, Soundcard resets in Logic 9 ****, I do have 2 lower quality Firewire Leads that go from the Soundcard to the 2 harddrives will need upgrading ASAP, thats next, I recon its time to upgrade the Soundcard as well for a Focusrite or similar as all my M-Audio Soundcards would literaly loose there minds on PCs and Macs, flakey drivers would just drop out of the Audiophole Firewire Card, more than I care to mention, so if that happens it could explain why the Time Machine drive drops out also, hmmm, and there was me thinking if I used a Mac it would all be ok. wrong. Would apreciate any qualified input, thanks.

Ok some updates I see, 6 in total including a firmware and security upgrades, also two Native Instruments Updates, Reaktor and Kontakt. I will be testing, this. Before the Updates I managed to peak the CPU load in Logic 9 and was only using 14 tracks, will need to bounce the Synth Plugs and drum tracks and run all the source samples from the Local internal drive a Hitachi 5400rpm drive hmmm :/ will experiment, anyway my Iomega FW drive froze up the Iomega Mac Companion is the correct name for it 2TB 7800rpm but it met it's match or was is the processor? Still sussing it all out. Firewire leads upgrade in effect. testing.. bleep. .

  • Unable to load OS bound to a domain after power-outage

I currently manage 200 2013 iMac but since installing Yosemite I've noticed that after the macs are joined to the domain and a network user is using the machine and a power outage occurs ALL iMac running Yosemite will not boot up. The boot process reaches about 30 percent and stays on the grey apple logo screen. After extensive troubleshooting we found that this only occurs when a user is logged in when the power outage occurs. However if the power outage occurs and the units are not being used by a network user the computer boots up fine. We completed a fresh install created a local user without adding it to the domain. We then logged in with the local user mimic'd a power-outage and the computer booted up fine. I have done extensive troubleshooting noticed that the issue does not occur with local users only users authenticated on a domain.
Note: We also noticed that if we deleted network users from the user folder and then performed the power outage and the unit loads the OS fine.
Any help with this is greatly appreciated...

Insert the Mac OS X 10.4 installation disk into the drive, and then restart the computer with the Option key held down. If you are able to successfully start up from the drive, install Mac OS X 10.4.

  • GTX 680 - No longer recognized after power outage, fans on 100%

As the title says, we had a power outage (not a surge, no breakers were tripped, and surge protector didn't trip either) that lasted about 10 seconds. When I rebooted, my card was no longer recognized, and the fans are spinning at full speed.
Hopefully there's a fix, as I can't RMA the card any longer (newegg 30 day limit passed, and I can't fork up another $500 for a replacement)
The card isn't being recognized in my BIOS (and not with any other tool on windows/nix either). It's only drawing about 0.15v according to the BIOS, so I think maybe it's burned out.
    Any ideas? Suggestions?
    Help is appreciated.

try in another PCI-E slot then, else find a way to test it in another computer
Tested it in all 3 PCI-e slots. I'll have to figure out a way to rebuild another rig I guess.
Edit; no way possible to run it in another rig. I don't have the CPU for the old 775 socket board.
I'm not sure why all my other cards would work (460 GTX, 260 GTX, 8800), but this one is stuck on max fan speed, and can't be detected. I'm pretty much stuck with the idea that the card is dead, and needs to be replaced.

  • 865PE Neo2-PFISR problems after power outage

I need some help with a problem.  A recent power outage while my supposedly "surge protected" 865PE Neo2 based machine was running, apparently messed something up.  After our power came back on, I powered it back up and discovered that I now have 4 ongoing problems.  Problem 1) it now hangs twice during the boot process, once at "auto detect 3rd master - press escape to abort", which if I then press ESC, it then moves to "auto detect 3rd slave - press escape to abort" and hangs there until I press ESC, at which time it then finishes booting like normal.  (by the way, I don't even have any 3rd master or 3rd slave installed)  Problem 2) I can no longer enter the Bios setup, even though I press the DEL key at the appropriate time.  Problem 3) The case light for hard drive activity stays on constantly, even though the drive seems to be working normally without any other problems.  Problem 4) A few issues here.  My sata dvd/cd combo drive is no longer recognized as being installed; the activity light on the drive is constantly on even though the drive is not running; the drive bay will no longer open.
I'm guessing that something has possibly been damaged on the motherboard or maybe the bios was affected somehow, or maybe the power supply was somehow damaged.  Either way, I'm not sure what to do now.  With the exception of the problems I listed, my system otherwise works normally as it always has, with the only real downside being that I don't currently have a dvd/cd drive.  I haven't tried any troubleshooting myself because I'm not sure where to look or what to look for.  The specs for my system are listed in my signature, with the only change being that I'm still running the original Antec 350w power supply that came with the case.  I could sure use some expert advice and help with this.

    Problem Update.
Well, I finally got my machine up and running "almost" as good as it was before my power surge problems.  Thank you to everyone that responded with advice.  I ended up replacing the Antec 330w TruePower psu with the new Enermax Noisetaker 420w (EG425P-VE SFMA V2.0) that I had, and I had to replace the MSI sata combo drive (went with a Pioneer 710 DVD-RW, which is an excellent unit) and now things are back to normal.  Plus, I bought an APC 650VA/390watt battery backup with soft shutdown to help prevent any power outage problems again.
When I said "almost" as good as new, that is because this morning when I booted up, all I got was a black screen (no post) for a couple of minutes, and then a message appeared that approximately said "the dram timings are too tight, reload timings", or something like that.  Well, since the timings have never been changed, I'm not sure what is going on, but after turning it off and then re-powering it up again, it booted (though slowly at first) and I've just been letting it run all day.  Ha, just when I was ready to venture into OCing this rig.  Think I will anyway.  If the problem continues, I'll be back seeking helpful advice again.

  • After a series of very short power outages in my town our Imac boots with the pinwheel going and a progress bar, then the users screen comes up but our passwords no longer opens up desktops, just returns to the users choice screen.  What should I do?

I'm on the choose a user screen and when I enter the password the screen goes white then returns to choosing a user. The system is rebooting differently when I tried turning off then back on, the pinwheel screen has a progress bar and it takes minutes instead of seconds.
    what should I try?

You can try an SMC reset, especially if there was a power outage.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If the issue seems like it just doesn't want to accept the password you'll need to boot to the install disc/recovery partition of the hardrive by holding the 'option' key while booting up. There should be a utility in there to reset your password.

  • Mac Mini wont start after power outage, and problem copying iPhoto library. HELP!

So, recently there was a power outage in my neighborhood, the power was intermitent for about 2 hours, during this time my mac rebooted itself several times, but on the second time it rebooted the power went out during boot, then the power finally went out for good, it was back in about 3 hours, but when i finnaly turned on my mac it got stuck at the Apple logo with a spinning wheel and a progress bar that wouldnt go past 40%, when i boot holding command -v it said that there were a lot of errors which were automatically fixed, except for one, "Incorrect Thread records" or something like that.
I have another partition with Mountain Lion installed for emergencies, the other one with Lion became inaccessible to mountain lion or any other OS X version, but oddly enough, I can access my Lion partition via HFSexplorer and see all my files untouched.
My main concern are my pictures in iPhoto, and thats about 36Gb of data, I want to backup them to my windows pc by copying the whole iPhoto library package, but HFSexplores for some reason cant copy the folders with date (XX/XX/XXXX) with the /, and it keeps changing them to XX_XX_XXXX and I know that would pretty much break my iPhoto library!
I googled my drive problem and people said that I need a Disk Utility called DiskWarrior, but I cant seem to find how to to use it, I got a copy from a friend, it was the digital version of the boot disk which need to be burned to a dvd.
Any help would be appreciated, and sorry for the bad english

    Hi All,
I have a Cisco NSS322 running firmware v1.0.0. I have Web server with MySQL, file sharing on the box. after a power outage this morning, I could not access the web server anymore. I can access filesharing and web GUI management interface (port 8080). I login to the box via ssh, and do netstat -na, and found that the box does not listen on port 80.
From Web GUI, I tick/untick the "Enable Web Server" number of time but can not turn on the services. The logs say re-lauch apache sucessfully.
    Could someone help please?
    thanks

Also you're running on the engineering build of firmware. You might need to upgrade to latest versions.

  • Time Machine won't recognize my last backup after a power outage

    Good Afternoon Everyone,
I just set up a Western Digital My Book Live on my network.  Last week, I set up Time Machine to start a backup on my MacBook Pro (running 10.7.5).  It took 2 days to finish, but all went well.  For three days, all the backups worked perfectly.  However, we had a power outage for an hour during the night and now that I turn on my MacBook Pro, Time Machine recognizes the disk, but doesn't have a record of any backup.
I have gone to the drive manually and seen that the files are still there, but how to I tell Time Maching on my MacBook that the full backup is already on that NAS drive, so that it won't do a full backup?
I would really appreciate the help.
    Brett

TM apparently identifies the machine's backup by the Computer Name stored in the Sharing preferences. Try opening Sharing preferences and changing the Computer Name to the one you used previously when your TM backup was created.

  • External hard drive not recognized after power outage

After a power outage last night my WD external hard drive is not showing up. The power light is on on the drive, the DVR is working normally, except my external drive is not showing up.  I unplugged power from the DVR and restarted it, but no change.

I have a 2G Samsung drive in Rosewell external encloser running for over a year.  Two times have lost power and DVR would not recongize external drive.  The procedure I used was to reboot twice via menu>settings>customer support>in home agent>reboot STB.   Mine required two resets, the first reboot looks like DVR recongizes drive but does show as available but second reboot shows disc activity during last part boot up of box then external would show with all recordings and normal operation.   I have not lost any recordings.

  • Photoshop fails to run or re-install after power outage

I experienced a power outage while performing an update to Photoshop via Creative Cloud on my iMac.  Since then I have been unable to use or re-install the app.  Initially when trying to re-install, Adobe Application Manager would run through most of the install process and then error out towards the end, stating that the download was corrupt.  This happened twice, and now after several reboots I no longer have the option to un-install on the Adobe sub-menu.  Other Adobe apps seem to function without issue.

Run the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool, download AAM from here:

  • HP w2207 Monitor - "No Video Signal" After Power Outage

My mother has a Mac Mini - 2009 model - that I bought her. It is connected to an HP w2207 monitor I used to have with a mini-display port to DVI [I think, either that or VGA] adaptor. She lives 2 1/2 hours away.
Last week there was a power outage and ever since she cannot get her system to work. Her monitor says "No Video Signal" and then goes to sleep.
I worked with her for over an hour on the phone trying to fix this problem (oh what fun). Tried every combination of things I know to fix it. It seems from her description that the Mac Mini is not actually booting. When I have her turn the computer off by (press the power button, wait, press it again), she reports that she will here the disk drive spin up for 10 seconds but then no more activity. The green light is on, but that is it.
I had her reset the SCM, but that didn't work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Bryan

See if the Mini will boot from the install disk. If it does, have your mom use Disk Utility to repair her internal hard drive. Repeat running repair until Disk Utility gives the disk a clean bill of health. Then repair permissions.
Disk Warrior can sometimes repair things Disk Utility can't. However, it's possible the internal directory is beyond help. In that case, erasing the internal disk and reinstalling the system will be necessary. It's also possible that the disk itself or electronic components in the Mini have been damaged which would require repair at the Mac hospital.
You might want to consider buying your mom a UPC.
