Power Query Reports

Are Power Query Excel reports able to be saved to PDF from Project Online BI area?
thanks in advance.

Hi Stev,
I'm not sure that I understand well your concern but...
If it is just about saving a document in a librairy, the answer would be yes: any document of any format can be saved in the BI center librairies (whatever it is on premise or online).
But if you want to know if you'll be able to refresh in the browser a Power Query Excel report embedded BI center/Excel web app, then I cannot answer, but it is just a simple test to perform to get the answer.
Hope this helps,

  • Currency fields in Salesforce reports display as "[Record]" in Power Query

Currency fields in Salesforce reports display as [Record] in excel when using power query.    Can include screenshots due to forum rules.

Thanks - that helped me figure it out.
IF you right click on the source and click edit to get into edit mode on the query, then you have the option to expand the record.  Doing this and saving does the trick.
Will try and post some screenshots later if others run into this.

  • Using Power Query in Excel for Power BI Report with OData Feedfack

I am trying to get the data into Excel Power Query from Dynamics CRM 2013 using OData Feedback.
Every thing works fine but the data that I retrieve in Power Query Editor shows columns as Record and when I expand it by selecting Value option shown it provides me the data in integer format whereas I want the name.
Basically it only provides me the value or id of the field from CRM, How could I obtain the Name field in it.

The documents should load but you won't be able to refresh your data. You should just see what was loaded to the sheet when you previously saved the document. Changes that you make in the iOS version shouldn't overwrite the PQ info and you should be able
to edit the queries and refresh when you load it back into a desktop Excel client. Please let us know if your experience deviates from these expectations.

  • Visual studio online - Excel power query usage and samples needed

    Background
Visual Studio Online does not offer much in the way of reporting, when compared to (onsite) TFS... unless you utilize the REST API functionality.
The Visual Studio Online REST API is fairly extensive, but not very 'reporting' friendly to applications like Microsoft Excel.
    Question
Are there any good examples of Microsoft Excel Power Query usage - to acquire and create reports via the Visual Studio Online REST API?  I've searched - but surprisingly haven't found anything of substance.  It is fairly simple to call a VSO REST
query using Excel Power Query, but not so simple to iterate through the lists within lists, etc... unless you are familiar with 'M language'.

  • Power Query/Data Management Gateway data refresh not working

Pretty new to o365/Power BI, but here's what I've got going on (hopefully someone can help me out):
I created a data management gateway and data source.  The data source says it's online in the PowerBI admin center, and it seems to be working correctly.  I can open Excel 2013 on my desktop (logging in as my trial o365 account which has Power
BI associated with it) and connect to the data source via Power Query using the oData option.  I make sure to import the data into the model, and then open up the PowerPivot window and create a simple pivot table using the data in the model.
that all works just great.  The problem comes when I upload the workbook and try to update it.  I've tried a few different ways.
    1. When I try to manually refresh the workbook by opening it in my o365 site and going to data-->refresh I get the following error:
An error occurred while working on the Data Model in the workbook. Please try again.
We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in this workbook.
The following connections failed to refresh:
          Connection: Power Query - dbo_DimProductCategory
Error: Out of line object 'DataSource', referring to ID(s) 'a75593f3-c34d-4f83-9458-49aa2cece164', has been specified but has not been used.
The following system error occurred: Class not registered
The provider 'Microsoft.Mashup.OleDb.1' is not registered.
          Power Query - dbo_DimProductCategory
    2. When I go into Power BI and go to "Schedule Data Refresh" for the workbook, I get the following error:
Sorry, the data connections in this report aren’t supported for Scheduled Refresh.
          Technical Details â–¼
          Correlation ID: B3CE4B10-2137-E593-6FCF-189B73465190
Date and Time: 03/31/2014 06:20:39 PM (UTC)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  If you need additional information, I'd be happy to provide it.

    Hey Guy,
    Thanks for the reply.
The "data source type" of the data source in Power BI is "SQL Server" (there was only that and Oracle available to select from)
The "data source type" that Power Query is using in Excel is "From oData Feed"....which is using the Power BI data source....which is using the data management gateway.
A few follow up questions if you have a second
    1. Do you know when PowerQuery data refresh will be supported? (just a general idea....weeks, months, next year?)
    2. Is there any other way to connect to (and be able to refresh) PowerBI data sources referencing "on prem" data via the data management gateway?  I tried using the oData feed URL in non-PowerQuery areas of excel (excel data tab, PowerPivot directly)
but it didn't work.  If there's some other way to connect to and refresh on prem data, i'm all ears :D
Really appreciate your help, thanks for taking the time.

  • Can I use Power Query to Import a table from Excel sheet range which starts not from the top row?

    Hi,
Being an experienced Excel user before Power BI, I am just starting to explore the M and Power Query capabilities, and need help already (ain't easy to google this use case somehow):
I need to import the table which sits in the Excel file with header row in the row 17 of Excel sheet, with some metadata header in the preceding rows of the columns A and B.
    01: Report name, Quick Report
    02: Report Date, 1/1/2014
    17: Employee Name, Manager, etc...
18: John Doe, Matt Beaver, etc.
Both (a) direct attempt to load as Excel file and (b) the indirect way through [From Folder] and formula in custom column -- both lead to the same error: "[DataFormat.Error] External table is not in the expected format."
Specifically, I tried to use the [Power Query -> From File -> From Folder] functionality, select an Excel file and add a custom column to access the binary content: [Add Custom Column] with formula "=Excel.Workbook([Content])".
It looks like Power Query expects a rectangular range with headers full-width followed by a contiguous table range to import anything, and refuses to load if that is not the case...
QUESTION: Is there any way to load whatever-formatted data from Excel first, and then manipulate the overall imported range (like referring to rows starting from 17th using "Table.SelectRows" etc.) to read the actual data? Reading and using
the metadata from header would be a bonus, but that comes second... The main issue is to get something from a non-regular Excel file to later work with using M formulae ...
    Thanks!
    SAM

Finally found the answer to this one in ():
You Cannot Open a Password-Protected Workbook
If the Excel workbook is protected by a password, you
cannot open it for data access, even by supplying the correct password with
your connection settings, unless the workbook file is already open in the
Microsoft Excel application. If you try, you receive the following error
      message:
    Could not decrypt file.
ANSWER: So, will have either weave in the work with temporary unprotected files or requires opening them before updating the data source (although this almost defeats the purpose of automation...)
ANSWER to ORIGINAL QUESTION: password was preventing Power Query from reading the Excel file. For solution see above.
Thanks anyway for participation and inspiration, Imke!

  • How to use power query with sitecatalyst

    Hello,
I need to use power query to import a table from sitecatalyst. Doing some tests I found that If remove the session from the url that has the report parameters, the app will redirect me to the login page, after entering the company, username and password
it will load the report page with the data according to my filters.
When I add the report url on the From Web option, excel does not allow me to add credentials. If I add the login+redirect url it allows me to add user/password but does not load the tables that appear on a regular browser.
Is it possible to consume sitecatalyst without using Report Builder? If not, how you access the security info after you added the url.
    Thanks.

To the best of my ability to tell, the right way to use this product from within Power Query would be to use its API. Unfortunately, we don't currently support either of the methods needed to be able to authenticate with the service (OAuth 2.0 and a relatively-custom
digest-based method). Adding a mechanism to allow use of arbitrary OAuth-protected resources is a fairly high priority for us, and I hope we'll be able to deliver something before mid-2015.
Scraping the website is very hard to do well -- both from an authentication and from a data discovery perspective.

  • I found a bug in Power Query. Anyone know why this occurs?

It took some time to isolate the cause of this.
One of our SharePoint sites couldn't successfully be connected to with Power Query for Excel 2013.  We would receive this message: "DataSource.Error: OData: The feed's metadata document appears to be invalid."
I made a site template and started making copies of the failing site in order to test the cause of the error.
I narrowed it down to 16 lists that, if present on the site, would cause the connection to fail.  Those lists' names were simply numbers.  For example: "1", "2", etc.
I noticed in the Listdata.svc feed for the site that only the choice columns were included in the metadata and not the single line of text column names.  In Listdata.svc, it appends a "c_" in front of the both the list and choice column
names if the list name starts with a number.
After many tests I believe I have confirmed you cannot start the name of a list with a number IF you have a choice column in that list.  Anyone know why this is?

    Hi,
Thanks for reporting this issue. Would you be able to capture some Fiddler traces and send them our way so we can take a closer look at the underlying errors?
Feel free to send them via "Send a Frown" in PQ for privacy.
    Thanks,
    M.

  • Power View Reports Dynamic filter

    Greetings Everyone !
I have a requirement to create a trend chart to show trend for last six months. So on trend chart, it should reflect previous 6 months (i.e. Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec) and value against each month.
    Problem:
I am using Power view in SharePoint (for multidimensional model) to create this report from SSAS (SQL 2012 SP1) and it doesn't support any custom MDX query to filter data.
Please help if you have any solution for this.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to add alert and subscription for the power view report in sharepoint 2013.
You need to Additional Configuration to provision for subscriptions and alerts when you install Reporting Services SharePoint Mode for SharePoint 2013.
The Reporting Services subscription and data alert features may require the configuration of SQL Server Agent permissions. For more information, see
Provision Subscriptions and Alerts for SSRS Service Applications
PerformancePoint Services is a SharePoint Server 2013 service application. It enables users to create business intelligence (BI) dashboards that provide insight into an organization's performance. You can create custom reports, filters, tabular data sources,
and scorecard transforms to extend the native functionality of PerformancePoint Services.
Power View in SharePoint is browser-based Silverlight application, a feature of the SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 (SP 1) Reporting Services Add-in for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and 2013. Creating, opening, and saving Power View reports (RDLX files)
all take place in SharePoint Server 2010 and 2013.

  • Add actions to an existing query or function in Power Query

    Hello
I have just started using Power Query and can see this will be an amazing tool to add to my tool set. However I am rather slow on the uptake and am having trouble with some of the basics of using Power Query
I have successful created some queries and by following along on some articles at excelguru.ca/blog i have created a usable function or two
The issue i have and can see this being something i will do a lot in the near future (especially while still learning), is that I need to go back to the query and function and edit it. In particular i need to either rename some columns to make them compatible
with other data sources, or delete them.
I can see that i can manually edit the query / function in the advanced editor, but i was wondering if it is possible to open the report up again and edit the columns in the same manner as when creating them in the first place?
Thanks in advance for any help given.
I am using Excel 2010, although do have access to Excel 2013 if needed, but as i am using PowerPivot in 2010 i would prefer to use PQ in 2010 also.
    Proportal

OK - What had completely stumped me, and i had to set it aside to do other things, has just been solved!
To explain - obviously editing Queries is simple - right click the query and edit... and then make the changes you want.
For functions - the thing i was really struggling with is also fairly simple, but takes a few more steps.
1 - copy the query from the advanced editor
2 - create a new blank query from Get External Data on the Home Tab / From Other Sources / Blank Query
3 - Past your function in and remove the function statement(s) and reinstate and file path information
4 - Edit the columns etc as you want.
5 - when completed paste the relevent sections back into the original function.
    Done.
Hope this helps any others out there that were struggling with something so simple...
Moral of this - copy and save all your queries and functions in a text editor such as notepad++ so you can cut out a lot of the steps above...

  • Issue consuming Odata feed with Power Query (not in Power BI)

I am trying to consume an OData feed from an SSRS report using Power Query ( latest release on Excel
2010 x32). The Report server is in my company intranet.
In the SSRS report, I can generate an Atom service file. When I use this file in PowerPivot, I can successfully import the report data and refresh it on demand. But I
would like to do the same thing in Power Query using the "From OData feed" feature.
    1. I have tried supplying the URI to the service file
    = OData.Feed("file:///C:/Users/Bdarbonneau/Documents/temp/Manuf_cycle_time_mapping_table.atomsvc")
    I get this error :
DataFormat.Error: The supplied URL must be a valid 'http:' or 'https:' URL.
    2. I tried supplying the URL that the service file contains, but without success.
    = OData.Feed("http://myssrsserver:8080/ReportServer?%2FMANUFACTURING%2FArchive%2FManuf_cycle_time_mapping_table&rs%3ACommand=Render&rs%3AFormat=ATOM&rc%3AItemPath=Tablix1")
    I get this error:
DataFormat.Error: OData: The given URL neither points to an OData service or a feed
Am I missing something, or is what I am trying to do not supported ?
    Regards,
    Bertrand

My Current workaround for pulling data from SSRS until the dev team have worked out the odata issue is to pull the report in as a csv file:
    Csv.Document(Web.Contents("http://Servername/ReportServer?/SummaryReport&rs:Command=Render&rs:Format=Csv")),
I also tried pulling an excel file from SSRS with no success.
    Tried:
    Excel.Workbook(URL)
    Excel.Workbook(Web.Contents(URL))
    Excel.Workbook(File.Contents(URL))
    Excel.Workbook(File.Contents(Web.Contents(URL)))
if anyone has had luck pulling in an excel file from SSRS i would like to know how.
Is there a rough release date for the odata functionality?

  • Where to find the timeout setting for connecting to SAP Bi Universe in Power Query for Excel

    Hi All,
I am trying to connect a SAP BI Universe. I am able to login to the environment and get the list of folders. But on trying to use the universe inside the folder, I am getting a time out error. The time out happens exactly at 100 seconds always.
DataSource.Error: SapBusinessObjects: The operation has timed out
Can you let me know if any setting can be done to avoid this timeout and get the universe into power query?

I have the same problem with Version: 2.17.3850.242. It times out after 100 seconds.
In addition, I couldn't report it by sending a frown. Get the following error message
Error Message: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c'
or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

  • Power Query import data error

    Hi all,
As Power Query does not support ODBC I tried direct connect to DB via menu
    From Database/From MySQL Database.
I passed authorization and my query was being running.
But after all records were downloaded I just got error
'SELECT command denied to user '****'@'x.x.x.x' for table 'bogus_table' and
as result PQ query was failed.
What's interesting is that my original query was 'SELECT id FROM b_user'.
I do NOT query any 'bogus_table'.
    What does all that mean?
    -- Paul

This appears to be a bug in the MySQL ADO.NET driver. Under some circumstances, when you close the DbDataReader, the MySQL driver will attempt to run the query “SELECT * FROM bogus_table LIMIT 0”. It attempts to trap the error by checking for error number
1146 (table not found), but in this case it’s getting a different exception – probably error number 1142 (select permission denied).
    You should
    1) Report the bug to MySQL.
    2) Delete the table named bogus_table, if it’s not actually needed.
    3) Consider renaming the table named bogus_table if it is needed, or granting select permission to all users.
We're sorry you had to run into this, but even if we could mitigate this MySQL bug in Power Query code, it would take nearly two months for you to get the updated version. Fixing the local data is likely the best approach.

  • Power Query Update 2.16.3785.242 (64-bit) has Corrupted Excel

The most recent update to Power Query has rendered Excel useless.  Any use of the Ctrl key (copying, pasting, etc.) will cause Excel to crash and restart.
A co-worker had the same problem yesterday and we were perplexed in its origin, though it became clear the update was the source after updating this morning.
    We need a fix ASAP!

Hi W. If you can still repro the crashes, can you please do the following to get a crash dump and then send it to us? (You can use the Send a Frown functionality on the working version of PQ.)
Edit the registry, open the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting and change the DWORD value ForceQueue to 1
Open %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue in Windows Explorer to monitor it
Reproduce the crash – at this point something should appear briefly in the ReportQueue folder
    Thanks,

    Hi Imke,
I have achieved what i wanted to... I did try the way you have suggested. But end result was not fruitful.
I did following for status wise count.
Step1: In power query I have created duplicate status column for each status available.( Example I have status {closed,open,initial... etc} I have created duplicate column for each status and replaced with null. For closed Except closed all i replaced in
    column with null).
Step2: So every time my power query data refreshes it does that step each time so that i can get the count of each status column wise in my pivot table.
    I have attached the result,
    Harsha
