Powerbook 12" G4 / are yo-yo power adapter's interchangeable from G3 to G4?

My 12" Powerbook G4 power adapter is no longer working. I have the original power adapter from my old Lombard Powerbook. . . is it possible to use the Lombard's power supply on the G4?
FWIW, both are the yo-yo type power adapter.
Thanks.

Since you've already tried it and found out it "works," all I can say is that I wouldn't recommend it. The charge/wattage needed by the newer PowerBook won't get what it needs from the older PowerBook Lombard's AC adapter.
It's like the age-old question of interchangeability of the 45W and 65W brick adapters for the PowerBooks/dual-USB iBooks.
The 45W adapter is designed for the iBooks and the 12-inch PowerBook (and the older Titanium PowerBook G4s). YES, you can plug it in to the new aluminum 15-inch PowerBooks and 17-inch ones, but it does not draw enough power to fully supply these machines. It can do harm by doing so.
On the other hand, using the 65W adapter designed for the aluminum 15-inch and 17-inch PowerBooks can be backwards compatible with the 12-inch iBooks (dual-USB and newer) and the 12-inch PowerBook G4s, since one, Apple officially replaced the 45W ones with the 65W models, and two, the 12-inchers (iBooks and/or PowerBooks) will only draw what it needs from the 65W adapter, not more.
So, you harm your 15-inch and 17-inch using a 45W, but you won't harm your 12-inch with a 65W.
That's the basis for my opinion about you using the old Lombard adapter with your 12-inch PowerBook, since as you've also said, it takes longer to charge with it.

  • Powerbook G4 Will not run off power adapter

    Hi,
My powerbook G4 starts up and runs fine from the battery but will not run when the battery runs down even though the power adapter is plugged in.
The ASP shows that the adapter is plugged in but not charging.
I have tried three different power adapters, has anyone got any ideas?

Did yu notice this behaviour immediate after a software update? it appears you aren't the only one with charging issues. I don't know of any solution so you may want to search through these forums to see if anyone did find a fix for this problem.

  • Will the Ipad power adapter operate safely from the modified sine-wave output from a 12VDC-240VAC inverter?

Will the power adapter for the Ipad Air operate safely on the modified sine-wave output from a 12 VDC-240VAC inverter?

I am not sure why you want to do that...the power adapter takes 100-240 volts AC at 50-60 Hz and converts that to 5 to 5.1 volts DC at about 2 amps.  Why are you inverting 12 VDC to 240 VAC then back to 5 VDC?
It should handle that easily, but seems like a long round about way of getting there.

  • I want my fan to run all the time on power adapter, any guru know how?

After buring out one hard drive, and getting tired of hauling a mini-fan and 1/2" foot spacers around with me between motels, I want a way to force the powerbook fan to run at full speed all-the-time when the powerbook is connected to a/the power adapter. Anybody out there know of a "patch" / "script" / "shell add-on" that will do this on 10.2.x?

Trust me, you don't want to do this. That's not how they are designed to run. If your machine is overheating, consider this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30612
And perhaps a notebook cooler, like this one by Antec. And when get back home, run the hardware test that came with your machine:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
If your machine is under AppleCare, I would take it in for service if any issues are detected.
Also note if your battery is under the battery exchange program:

  • Macbook Shutsdown when power adapter is plugged.

    Hello,
My Macbook (Jan 2007), is not charging. when i plug the magsafe it goes off. The charging lite turns green just after few seconds, it does'nt stay orange. I have tried everthing resetting SMC, PRM, changing battery etc. Does anyone have any clue, as to why is this happening. I hope its not anything to do with the Logic Board, i guess not, checked the HD other stuff-just don't what to do. Macbook is dead, no way to put in on. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

I too have periodically experienced a strange noise (spinning/hissing/scratching) coming from the area where the power adapter cord plugs in to my powerbook. The sound is louder than my HD activity.
It happens only after plugging in the power cord while the computer is on with a semi-discharged battery. If I shut the computer down while it is making the noise, the sound level decreases durring the shutdown and becomes very quiet when powered off (possibly stops). The noise also stops when the cord is unpluged with the computer running but returns when plugged back in without restarting the system.
This does not occur every time I plug in as described above.

  • IPad 3 charging issue with 10w power adapter

    Hi everyone,
About the beginning of November, I purchased my first iPad. This is an iPad 3, wifi. Up until yesterday, I was able to charge my iPad using the 10w power adapter and cable from the box.
Since yesterday, that doesn't work anymore. I searched the internet but couldn't find a solution.
    - I can charge my iPad 3 using my Macbook from late 2009, but it goes very slow. I don't get the screen and sound saying it's charging. I want to charge overnight and can't leave my computer on overnight.
    - When I try to charge the iPad using the 10w power adapter and cable from the box, nothing happens. I don't get a lightning bolt or message saying it's charging. I don't get a message saying "not charging".
    - I tried different outlets around the house, including outlets directly on the wall.
    - I tried using my iPod classic from 2007 cable, no change. I hadn't expected it to work since the cable is fine, it's the power adapter that doesn't work.
    - I tried rebooting, also a cold reboot. No changes.
    - I can't take this to an Apple store since there is no Apple store near me.
    - I'm not playing games on it.
    - It doesn't charge when I plug it into the wall overnight.
This became a problem after using my iPad for about two weeks. Anyone who can help?

I ended up buying a 12w adapter. Because I'm not near an Apple store and the nearest one charges 30 euros an hour to even take a look, that's not really an option. That store also doesn't sell the ipad I have. Buying a new adapter was cheaper, and I can have it mailed home, and at least I'm sure it'll work and will go a bit faster.
    Thanks for the help anyway!

  • E3000 - Power Adapter

On the phone trying to ask where to get replacement power adapter/supply - not easy. sucks.where to get replacement power supply" got me transferred 4 times w/o resolution. I have E3000 - but then asked to pay close to $35 for it. Not gonna happen - $35 for a power adapter is ridiculous.

With reference to your concern, what happened to the power adapter of the router? Is it not turning on? If yes, then did you try to connect the router to a different power socket?
Hi I am the OP on twitter - and for some reason the Official Linksys twitter account fwd my post to here as well.
To answer your question: my power adapter is missing (from a move) and right now I am using a 1A power adapter from the old WRT54GL. The adapter for E3000 needs a 2A adapter.

  • Is the iPad power adapter interchangable with iPhone adapter?

Is the iPhone power adapter(5s) interchangeable with the iPad power adapter, both use the lightening connector.

    The short answer is yes.
You can use the iPad adapter with the iPhone.
    iPad requires more power.
If you use the iPhone adapter for the iPad, it will charge but just very very slowly.

  • When charging and using, ipad 2 is 100% battery, does ipad use the power from the power adapter or from the battery?

I have a quention, when i am charging and using my ipad 2 at the same time, if the battery of ipad is fully 100%, does ipad use the power to work from the power adapter only or from the battery only or both? Thanks!

YOu don't have to have your receipt. Apple should have a record of how long you've had the device. If you bought it in april 2012, then your 1 year warranty against manufacturer's defects is almost up. You should find your local apple store, make an appointment and take it in.

  • Where can I get accessories and power adapter for Powerbook 180c

My father just bought me second hand a Powerbook 180c. It looks to be in great condition. But it can't be checked to make sure as the battery is dead and the power adapter was not with it. I've looked on line at various stores, Office Depot, Staples, Amazon, Buy, etc only to find that they either do not carry Apple products or the accessories and power adapters would not work. Or the prices are disgustingly high. Due to illness I cannot work and my parents are on a limited budget. Does anyone know what sites carry accessories and power adapters that will work on the 180c without breaking the bank, atleast a power adapter for now, to see if the 180c even works? Any advice appreciated.

Hi, I'm not sure that a retail store will still carry an adaptor this old unless it's a generic one.
I just checked mine, as Jan says it is 7.5V DC at 3.0A don't get the older version which was for older PowerBooks as it was only 2.0A. The part number on my 3.0A is M5652.
This fellow on eBay seems to have lots.

I am posting here because I know the smart people are on this forum!
I am at my wits end trying to find which model powerbook the Yo-Yo adapter Model #M7332 fits. It must be a huge secret. The Apple chart for power adapters does not show it. looks like the same model # was used for PB G3 series, original iBooks and Titanium PowerBooks, connectors are different.

    iBook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Mary,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
You have the Powerbook G3 Series M4753 a.k.a. "Wallstreet". The PB 1400, 3400, any black G3, and clamshell iBook all use the same output adapter (45 watts) and the same size power port plug. I believe it was sometime during 2000>2001 time frame that Apple moved from the rectangular black adapter to the so-called yo-yo or saucer adapter; these are also 45 watt output. Then Apple moved to the slimmer powerbooks and iBooks which required a smaller power port plug.
The yo-yo adapters are suseptible to wire failures at the power port plug and also where the DC wire enters the saucer; I would avoid that adapter unless new.
I would perform a search on Google for 'Apple 45w power adapter'. You will not only get eBay hits, but also other sites that sell new and used replacements.

  • 45w or 65w for 17" powerbook power adapter?

My power adapter is frayed and sparking and i am about to buy a replacement. In researching the recommended wattage, i found that 65w is standard for the 17" PB. However, the current adapter i have (the one that came with my PB) is 45watts. Why? I don't know. should i buy a 65w or 45w?
    thanks guys!
    Powerbook G4 17"   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   the 1st generation of 17"

65 Watt should be the correct one (verified at my own 17" G4 PB).
Have you bought the computer new or was it a refurbished model ? All I can imagine that there were PowerBooks with a 45 Watt adapter sold by Apple, but I can't imagine the reason.
Anyway, the 65 Watt adapter will work and should not hurt the computer (just ensure that voltage and current are matching if you buy an universal adapter).
