Powerbook G4 Battery & Apple Care

Hi,
I brought my Powerbook G4 into the Apple store b/c my battery would only hold about 1 hour after a full overnight charge. I bought the laptop in Sep 2004 and the Mac Genius told me that I needed to buy a new battery. I informed him that I bought Apple Care at the time of original purchase date (same store that I took the laptop into). His reason was that Apple Care only covers defective batteries and that after about two years, the battery will not hold a charge well. I told him I felt somewhat cheated b/c the battery issue was the primary issue as to why I bought Apple Care in the first place -- at the recommendation of the Apple salesman who said Apple Care covers the battery. I don't know what to do. I guess I could buy a new battery, but I just kind of feel a let down. What do you guys think? Have you ever had your laptop batteries replaced at no charge after a lengthy time of ownership?

My understanding is that batteries are considered to be "consumables" and are not covered under warranty (original or extended). From day one, they are known to wear out, that's their design. AppleCare costs something like $349 from Apple for a PB and a battery costs $79, so if that was the only reason to get it, it would hardly make fiscal sense.
I got my Applecare to protect myself in the event that the screen or logicboard or some other pricey component proved defective 18 or 24 months into owning my PB, and I could get the unit fixed and sent back to me gratis -- whereas an uncovered repair might total in the thousands otherwise.
If I were you, I would just buy a new battery -- I'm going to have to join you in few months, as my own battery has lost about half its capacity, but that's how rechargeable lithium ion batteries are -- their capacity and charge retention declines with both time and use. C'est la vie.

    Batteries are considered to be consumable parts and are generally not covered by AppleCare. But as Jay suggested, if you can confirm that your battery is failing, you can call Apple and ask.
    You may just need to calibrate your system's power circuitry. Apple recommends doing a complete discharge (to the point where the MB shuts itself down) about once a month. That calibrates the charging circuitry and the battery. See:

    I bought my 15" macbook pro just a year ago and my battery life runs out extremely quickly. This started maybe a month or two ago. Its hard to tell. I only noticed the rapid change recently. Fully charged it says I have 2:27 (2 hours and 27 minutes) of usage time...with about 50% screen and keyboard brightness.
    I've checked inside system preferences and its cycle count is 261 and full charging cap is 6316.
    I have apple care...is this something i can/need to take up with apple. You'd think if you pay the price for these machines you should get mroe use out of them.
    ONLY A YEAR I'VE HAD THIS!
    My PC lasted 4 years before the battery showed signs this dramatic of wear.

    do you have a mbp with dual video cards? running the system with the higher end card increases the heat and also drains batt power.
    i have the 1st gen unibody (2008) with an original removable battery of 311 cycles and 4453 charge. under normal use ill be happy to get 1.5hrs. the mac battery counter thing says i have 3.3hrs though (whatever). compared to me, i think you use your battery more than i do, perhaps its the reason why it degraded so fast in a year?

I got it repaired outside but after that also if I switch it off in the same situation it again happens and I have to take it for repair it has happened 3 times after that. Is it a inherent problem in iPhone that it uses battery even when switched off and if in that case battery drain out then refuse to get charged because this is the scenario i have experienced every time?

    Apple told you it was unrepairable.... You had it serviced by an unauthorized party. It's now no longer eligible for out of warranty replacement by Apple.
    There's really nothing else we can say about it. Find a competent 3rd party repair shop or buy a new one.

    Apple care has been of absolutely no help to me. My 10 month old iPhone 5 stopped charging one fine day and Apple denies any responsibility for  the same. Between my Family of 4, we Re currently using 5 Apple devices. Am so disappointed with the service from Apple. Although my cell phone is well within the warranty period , I have been denied a replacement. And the Shield Insurance that I purchased is now declining the insurance amount even. They insist I prove that it is an accidental damage. And Apple refuses to cover what they choose to call a 'physical damage'. So where does that leave me ?!

    I cannot see the damage. But the screening centre has pics showing it is damaged. Apple refuses to cover a physical damage. But the reason the device is damaged could only be coz it had a poor battery life from start. The iPhone 5 is infamous for the same. We all know it. Apple conveniently denies responsibility.
    And the Insurance company says it covers only accidental damage. Now how am I to prove an 'accidental' damage ? Unless I lie to them....

  • Foreign apple care + battery issues

    Hi people,
    I tried searching for similar issues but it seems I have several of them combined. And I've just about gone crazy with this issue so I need to hear your opinion/advice.
    I was living in the States in 2008 and in September I bought my 15" MBP. Got a Apple Care warranty with it as well. Now, I live in South-Eastern Europe, in Macedonia, where there are no official apple stores.
    A month a ago my battery died and by dying I mean all-of-a-sudden, it showed 0% and the charger was green. A couple of hours later is started swelling and by now it's almost complete open. I went to a retail store here who told me to contact apple.com
    I did. Called the US number. Got a very helpful advisor who told me that the retail store over here does have the right to submit a warranty request, upon which apple will send me a new battery. If not she said I should call back and they'd give me information on what the closest apple store would be in the region so I can try there.
    The store over here, however, is being completely irresponsible and unprofessional to begin with. I went about 5 or 6 times, asked to see the certified technician who was never there. I left my contact detail 3 times in 4 weeks and no one called. Finally, I had to ask for a favor from a friend and got the technician on the phone who said I would have to pay for the whole thing which is not what anyone from apple mentioned.
    I called back Apple in the US. This time I got some ignorant guy who thought I was calling from Asia, and despite me asking him a very concise question about how justified this claim that the store is making is and what are the other places near by I can go to, he kept ignoring me and kept repeating that it will be handled once I come back to the States. And that I should buy a new battery. I told him I live here and I have no plans of coming back any time soon, so he said he can't help and gave me some other international number which only takes emergencies.
    Now imagine my anger about 1st being told one thing and then another. Not only that but he claimed to not be able to do something which the previous advisor did without me even asking?
    Anywayz, here come my questions ... has anyone ever encountered a situation similar as this? Or heard of people having to pay shipping costs even in countries that have only retail stores? Any advices? Any way I could contact the previous advisor (I only have a name and a id call number)?
    Anyone know a official Apple store or a store that deals with Apple Care in the region of Bulgaria, Greece, Albania, Serbia, Croatia, ... and the furthest is obviously Hungary ...?

    Keep your receipts of the shipping cost. You may need to escalate this to Customer Relations, given your contrary feedback.

    That's something, a case number would be better. That's how AppleCare is able to track customer calls. But you can try the id call number.

    In what instance does Apple Care would cover a battery?
    My late 2008 MBP's battery is at 288 cycles and on full charge, its only got 34% (1950mAh) health according to iStat widget. In normal usage, it lasts about an hour. Is this battery defected? And whats Apple Care's policy on this?

    You would need to contact Apple in order to get an accurate response. If your machine is still under warranty (in your case, you would have to have the extended AppleCare), Apple will often replace a battery with less than 300 cycles. This is, however, not always the case. Reports of how Apple deals with failing batteries vary greatly from person to person. They are generally considered consumable items. Apple does seem to offer preferential treatment for those with AppleCare however.
    I don't believe that Apple actually guarantees that the batteries will last a specific number of cycles.

    If you check the fine print, you will see that Apple's warranty does not cover consumable parts such as batteries unless they are defective.

  • Service Battery and no apple care

    So if my 15" Mac Book Pro (2010) is 4 years old and I dont have apple care, when it says service battery does anyone know how much it would be to replace, and how long I have to replace it.

    Okay thanks. The help doc that pops up when I click service battery, says:
    "Service Battery: The battery isn’t functioning normally, and you may or may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. Take your computer in for service. You can continue to use your battery before it’s checked without harming your computer."
    So is there any way of know how long before its dangerously bad? There are only four options mentioned in the help doc and Service Battery is the lowest one, so is this that notification before it dies or will I have a couple months or so. I just noticed it today but its possible it said this earlier, and I didnt know.

    Another thing to note my power cable is cut, I am waiting on a new one in the mail, so I have electrical tape on it could this, be the cause of this? Could this be damaging my battery?

    I'm having the same problem with my battery, and from what i've read, it seems our only option is to buy a new one. You should still try to call them, they might exchange it for some specific reasons, which I'm sure they'll tell you about.

    Basically only for the first year and only if Apple deems it defective. It is seen as a consumable item and not covered under Applecare.

  • Will replacing the battery in my MBP void the Apple Care Warranty?

    I have a 15 inch 2010 Macbook Pro. I'd like to replace the hard drive, and I've found various videos and sites with instructions. There are two questions that I can't seem to answer though. Are there certain brands or speeds I will need to use, and does replacing the hard drive void the three year Apple Care I bought with the MBP?

    Replacing the hard drive does not void the warranty nor AppleCare, though if you cause any damage doing the replacement, that could void the warranty, and of course the warranty will not cover the third-party hard drive. Replacing the battery, as your subject line says, will void the warranty, the battery not being user-replaceable if you do indeed have the 2010 MBP.
    Others here can probably comment re. drive type; brand won't matter unless there is a cable for the thermal sensor in the MBP as there is in some other systems in which case drive would have to be of the same brand for the cable connector to match up.

    Hello folks.
    I think I may have messed up big time. I purchased my powerbook back in Sept, along with the apple care. Now, I assumed the apple care box simply had info explaining apple care, so I didn't even open it. I shelved it and left it at that, thinking if I ever have a problem i'll go back to apple with my receipt and box.
    So here is my question, is there anything in the box I have to fill out or send over to apple within a designated time period to activate the warranty? I haven't opened it yet. I'm just wondering what I should do, if I should go back to apple, or was my original assumption correct, and am i letting the paranoia get to me?

    Hi, George - Most often, when you purchase an APP at the same time as a computer, the computer is automatically enrolled in the APP. To verify whether or not your computer has been enrolled in the Plan, click on the purple "Support" tab at the top of this page, then scroll down, and enter your serial number in the text field on the right hand side of the page under the heading, About Your Support Coverage.

    Why don't you ask these questions to the reseller?  How would you expect us to know the policies of the reseller?  They can charge whatever price above or below what an Apple store or AASP would.
