Powering Up Problem...

My mothers Mac Mini, when she tried to turn it on, made a strange 'hissing' sound , the start-up sound happened, then it made a 'Bleep....Bleep.....Bleep' noise, the white power lamp lit, but then went out & now it won't power up at all - Any ideas out there? - Thanks

Power On Self-Test Beep Definition
"If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime. Instead, the system will beep as explained below. If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance.
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once. Note: a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length. "

  • Mac powering off problem (-- is it likely to be the hdd?)

    Hi all,
i'm hoping to get some help with a problem I am having with my mac book pro.
    Some Specs:
MacBookPro (model identifier seems to be 3,1)
    Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4GHz
    2gig memory
    SMC Version 1.16f8
    160gig HDD - ST9160823AS (split into 2 partitions: Mac partition 123GB, Journaled HFS+, Windows partition FAT32)
    OSX 10.5.6
The problem is that my mac, from time to time, just turns off in the middle of whatever I am doing (the screen goes black and the computer is off - this happens instantaneously). Then, when I go to power up, it begins the boot sequence - grey screen, spinning cog/gear - and then turns off again (black screen, no power).
On some occasions, if i try to power up enough times it will boot. On other occasions, many, many power up attempts do not work.
However, when in this state, it will still boot to the windows partition, or boot from an external drive.
Also, when i was booted into mac OS from an external drive, I ran disk repair on the Macintosh HD and got the 'Invalid Sibling Link' error.
After the invalid sibling link error, I ran fsck_hfs - r in single user mode. This found and fixed a number of errors.
Unfortunately, it powered off again. But recovered without me having to resort to fsck_hfs.
Most recently, i ran applejack (auto) in the hope that this will help resolve things.
I also tried resetting the SMC.
So, my main question is -- can I be certain the harddrive is the cause of the power offs? Or is it possible that something else is causing the power-offs and the harddrive errors are a symptom, rather than the cause of the power-offs?
Aside from running the hardware test (holding D with install disc on boot), which I have done (and nothing showed up) is there anything else I can do to try to isolate the problem?
If i can be reasonably sure it is the harddrive I will buy a replacement.
Also, not sure if this is relevant, but the poweroff only seems to occur when the laptop is running on battery.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Daniel

can I be certain the harddrive is the cause of the power offs?
No. It's probably the power supply and/or logic board, and the constant shut offs are causing directory damage to the hard drive.
    Get it repaired

  • LCIII - powering up problems -- new issue

A few months back, July, I had problems powering up my LCIII. It turned out that a PRAM boot got it going and I replaced the 1/2AA battery. Things have worked fine since then. Recently I had it on for a while and it came up with an error message. I tried to restart the computer and it gave me an icon of a disk with a question mark in it. The computer makes the first "sounds" for booting up and seems like it's going to start up fine, but then it sounds like it looses power and that icon comes up. Any ideas? I know I have kept this pizza box going for a long time and will be getting an I book this year but I need the data on this computer (I don't have anything but a 3 1/4 floppy drive on it -- no modem or anything). Help!

Well, I finally got a moment to try this and it did not work I do believe my hard drive done died. Given that I've had this machine in it's original form since the 80s and I've gone through 2 plus PCs, I believe it will get a proper burial. Just bummed that I didn't back it up the date right before it happened as I was doing it every couple of months (don't use it all the time). Thanks all for your help and if someone has a resurrecting idea, I would love the miracle

  • Powering Down Problem

    Hello Experts,
Thanks ahead of time for any answers to my problem This is my first post to all the Computer Wizes  out there who know a ton more about this stuff, than I ever will.
I just built my first system and am having one problem, that is bugging me.
The system will not power off without me having to hold down the power button for about 7 seconds.
My cpmputer set up is the following:
    K8N Neo4 Platinum
AMD 3200 64  with a Arctic Cooling Silencer 64 Ultra TCL

    LiteOn DVD Dual Layer
    ThermalTake Silent Purpower 410W
One item that I could not find the connectors for from the ThermalTake case was the two Power Leds in the JFP1 . I do not believe that is the problem.

hi, my system has suddenly decided to not power on fully. i plug it it in, and the onboard  LAN lights come one, but when i press the power button for the PC, everything comes to live for a split second (fans power on) and then it switches itself off... is this a grounding problem or something to do with the chassis touching the mobo? or is it just fried?
really need the help, thanks in adance,
    Jason.
PS i've tried taking bios battery pout and resetting bios etc...
could it be i have a dodgy PSU?

  • Photosmart c6180 powering on problem

When I turn on it flashes a message not to turn off the unit by pulling the cord or something to that effect and then it powers off and restarts and redoes the same thing over and over until I shut it off.
Is there a fix for this?
    Thanks!

Hey riptex I found a solution today and thought you might want to try it out too. I found it here http://www.fixya.com/support/t2270571-c6180_keeps_powering_shuts_down
Introduction Perform a semi-full reset to set all user menu settings, telephony parameter settings, country/region and language UI, fax memory settings, fax journal information, speed dial and broadcast lists, personal header information, and junk fax settings to the default settings. Performing a semi-full reset of the All-in-One
Use the On button to turn on the product.
Remove the power cord from the product.
Press and hold the # and 6 buttons.
While holding the buttons down, connect the power cord to the product.
Continue to hold the buttons down until the color graphics display becomes blank, then release the buttons.
Use the On button to turn on the product. The reset information appears on the color graphics display.
    Hope this helps you!

  • N97 powering up problems

I've had my n97 since the 19th June. Been sort of happy with it so far especially after the various software updates. However it has recently developed a fault where it sometimes turns itself off. When I try to turn it back on it just displays the blue NOKIA on white background then doesnt progress any further. I have to remover the battery and the only way i can get it back on is if i hold the Camera + green + red buttons together while turning it on. I normally have to do this several times though. really makes your fingers ache!
It also does this if I turn it off manually.

It is broken - send it back

  • Powering up problem with crazy solution

Hello...Everytime I shutdown my computer I cannot power it back up unless I pull out the power cord from the computer and then plug it back in to the computer. Then it will power on. Does anyone know why that is happening? Thank you for any help

Online sources for Mac PRAM batteries:
Other World Computing (you pay the shipping)
Operation Headgap Systems (they pay the shipping)
If you wish to pay the exorbitant price at Radio Shack, their part number for the proper battery is 23-026

  • Power up problems after rma'd once

recently i have sent my motherboard for repair to msi for a powering up problem. And i have to admit that i am very disapointed with there repair process. My motherboard wouldnt power up properly so i sent it for repair. When i received my motherboard back from you it had said that the board was in fact repaired. It was flashed to a beta bios that didnt work properly with my hardware. So i flashed it back to version 1.7. It worked initially after install, however after i turn off my computer for a few hours.i cant simply power it up again it wont post. I have tried 3 seperate brandname power supplys and have tested all my parts that i use in this computer in another motherboard. Which posts very quickly, with no problems.
So I am using that motherboard and have a 300 dollar 875p neo fis2r as a paperweight. To rule out humidity, power etc i brought it to work with me and tested all the components, the components were fine. The motherboard on the other hand was not. I can make it run if i power it up several times in sequence. However its a real pain in the butt to do so. When i brought the system to work i noticed yet another problem with it. The chipset fan was seized solid. How the technician missed this when he was repairing it i have no idea. As a fan usually will not seize that solid in 2 weeks i must assume that it was like that when it was sent for repair.
    My hardware is the following.
2 sata raptors in raid -0
    9800 pro (ati)
    antec 430 w psu
    Audigy 2 gamer
2 kingston hyper x modules in dual channel 2*256 pc 3500 (not overclocked)
all stuck in a  antec lanboy case.
    1 200 gb western digital
    1 liteon dvd reader
1 lg dvd 4040b dvd burner
    ati tv wonder pci
The only onboard devices i use are ethernet and raid controller. Hyper threading is disabled, voltages also appear normal. i use bios version 1.7 as it is the only one that works great in battleflied 1942 with my hardware. I have tried multiple powersupplies as powering up issues are like psu first then board. but i mean crap they work in every other board i test them in so why now this one.
This board was a pain in the @ss from the start. bios versions have to mucked around with till just the right one was used. Latest bios flash didnt work properly for my rig. And now aparently they have technicians that have beer goggle glasses on and cant see a fan not moving.
This really makes me upset, and if you guys have any sugestions for me please let em rip. Somehow i doubt sending this thing back again will do me any good.

    Hi D5GR,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I suspect you're right in that it's related to the battery. Following your email I have tried your suggestions re removing the battery and power lead and holding the power button for 20 seconds. The PC restarted  correctly. When I went on to check the battery the battery check it came up with a bettery error. I have ordered a new battery and we'll see what happens once I get that in and try it. I'll let you know the results! Many thanks for your help

  • HELP ME! My computer is posessed! Very weird power problem!!!!

I am using an iMac - first generation of intel-based iMacs - and I have a very weird powering-on and powering-off problem.
When I plug my iMac into the wall socket, it starts up on it's own. When I shut it down (using BOTH the apple menu OR the power button), it starts itself right back up. When I put it to sleep, it goes to sleep and then wakes up immediately. It does restart normally, though, so it seems that my iMac simply has a problem with being OFF!
Help meh! I'd like to save a trip to the Apple Store if I can help it!

Reset the SMC, as per > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
    +2. Unplug the computer's power cord.+
+3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.+
    +4. Release the power button.+
+5. Attach the computers power cable.+
+6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.+
    {quote:}When I plug my iMac into the wall socket, it starts up on it's own.{quote}
It will do that if the box *☐ Start automatically after a power failure* on the Energy Saver preference panel is checked.
    {quote:}When I shut it down (using BOTH the apple menu OR the power button), it starts itself right back up. When I put it to sleep, it goes to sleep and then wakes up immediately. It does restart normally, though, so it seems that my iMac simply has a problem with being OFF!{quote}
If the SMC and Energy Saver Preference changes do not cure these problems, then you will need to seek service help.

  • I was eligible for replacement for my iphone 5 under the sleep/wake button program. Took it to apple store and they declined saying hardware failure. I am baffled whether apple is serious about customers. They manufacture defective goods and we are stuck!

The issue started just out of warranty. Had powering on problem and did not want to spend money on repair. After that the phone crashed and refused to power on for 4 months. Now I am eligible for repair but apple store declined saying it is a hardware problem and beyond repair. I am not able to comprehend the attitude of Apple. Obviously manufacturing sub standard products is their fault and we are paying heavy price!!
The company is obviously gonna lose in the long run!!

    Pretty77 wrote:
No it is not user damAged. I would like to clarify that this piece had problems like bugs, power on and off and charging issues. It used to heat up a lot while in use. It is defective iphone to begin with. Now when iphone acknowledges there is a problem, why not replace??
If the phone was not operating as its supposed to initially you could of had the phone replaced under the 1Year Warranty. Apple is only Fixing phones with strictly "sleep/wake" button issues. i.e. if your phone has other issues other than "sleep/wake" you must fix those on your own (if out of warranty) prior to apple fixing the sleep/wake. However if your device is under warranty they will give you a new phone.

  • My ipad2 to will not stay switch on or charge correctly since i have updated the software and even after the reset and different software through itunes still wont charge or stop switching itself off

i have the ipad 2 16gb 3g and wifi, i carried out the latest update and was at 64% battery it updated as normal no problems then i went to use it about 15 mins later to c my battery was at 2% and then it powered down!!!!!
i trid charging it and it came up sayin charged and displayed 2% then switch off and kept powering up and cutting out so i carried out the reset though itunes and it put software on to fix battery and powering up problems and now it turns on fine but still will not charge correctly (must also point out im using the correct charger from the wall and i have tried other chargers and cables which have made no difference)
this is really bugging me as my ipad is a great piece of kit and worked brilliantly until i have updated which begs the ?? why are apple releasing updates which inaffect have destroyed my ipad :-(

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.

  • RedHat 9 and Neo2

Has anyone installed Redhat 9 with this motherboard(Neo2 LS 865PE)?
I have tried to install but installation gets stuck at hardware checking.
My harddrive, graphics card are compatible. Checked on redhat website. I cannot find any info on motherboard.
So, if anyone knows, pls reply.
    Thnk you.

I'm using Debian (woody) as well and it all works fine. Just had to get to somewhere above 2.4.18 kernel to enable speedy USB2.0 access (480mbits/s vs 12mbits/s). I've opted for the 2.4.24 backported kernel (http://www.backports.org) to get past the recent exploit and get the latest drivers in. You also have to use a kernel > 2.4.18 to enable SMP, since it seems 2.4.18 doesn't recognise the chipset or something. 2.4.24 shows all the details (and names) of the various chips and bridges on the motherboard. Good luck.
Have the same non-powering down problem, which is caused by APM not being SMP safe or something, but according to some articles I've read just now, you can either add to lilo.conf:
      append="apm=power-off"
    or
      insmod apm power_off=1
on a running system. Haven't tried it at yet, but I have faith in the linux community.

  • Calendar reminders (notifications) still NOT working, even after 602 update.....

So, Verizon Wireless released the 602 update to the Gingerbread OS for the Droid X, and the calendar reminder popups (notifications) are still NOT working properly.
This is VERY frustrating, as I use these notifications (reminder pop ups) for everything from business related (meetings, etc) to personal (when to take medicines, etc).
It's also VERY frustrating because BEFORE Gingerbread, when the Droid X ran Froyo, there was NOT a problem with the calendar and its reminders.
I would assume that there are MANY, MANY people being affected by this issue...and I wonder why Verizon hasn't "put the heat" on Google to FIX this issue which is clearly related to the Android OS, more specifically, Gingerbread.
I used to like the Droid X very much, but now I'm counting the days until I can get an iPhone.  At least you know what you're getting, and won't have an update "break" functions of the phone.
So, Verizon, if you're listening... PLEASE get this calendar notification problem FIXED.
    Thank you!!

I'm the original poster of this topic.  And let me tell you the steps that I went through to try to get this resolved, and then I'll let you know the ultimate solution that I wound up doing and am happy about (but am NOT happy about Verizon & Motorola).
    1) updated DroidX to latest 602 update.
    2) went into admin partition and deleted cache
    still did not work
    3) went into admin partition and did hard reset (complete restore) from inside the admin partition
Still did not get calendar reminders to work.
    4) went into normal phone and accessed "Restore Phone to Factory Specs" from the Privacy menu in settings.  This caused the phone to do a similar hard reset as in step 3, except it also ran the beginning software (welcome to your Droid, we now have to activate your phone, etc).
Calendar reminders did not work. (REMEMBER... when I say they did not work, I mean that the reminders would go off EVENTUALLY , but anywhere from 30mins AFTER the appointment to literally HOURS AFTER the appointment).
    5) Created a COMPLETELY NEW AND DIFFERENT calendar at Google under a DIFFERENT screen name/account.  Configured DroidX to completely forget the original calendar and to start using the NEW one.
Reminders still did NOT work properly.
    6) Once again, tried hard resets.
    NOPE.  Still did NOT work.
    7) CALLED Verizon Wireless and described my problem and they pretty much didn't/couldn't help and said they would "send a report to the engineering team" about the problem.
And HERE is the thing that REALLY BURNED ME UP about this WHOLE ENTIRE DEBACLE.....  my DroidX worked 100% correctly BEFORE the Gingerbread upgrade to the Android OS.  When it was running Froyo (previous OS), every single calendar reminder on my original calendar worked every single time, on time, every time.  BUT... AFTER Gingerbread, it just didn't work.  (Don't get me started with the phantom powering on of the phone after it was powered off problem that STILL exists after the 602 upgrade).
SO.......... what did I eventually do???   Well, by this time, I was eligible for early upgrade at upgrading pricing and switched to the iPhone4 (I didn't want the 4S).  AND YOU KNOW WHAT???  Using the ORIGINAL GOOGLE calendar that I used before all the above stuff happened, my reminders on the iPhone4 work all the time, every time.  These include appointments that I made 8 months ago to new ones that I make every day.  And for all of them, the iPhone4 sets the reminder chime off EXACTLY when I want it to.
Now, I realize that this doesn't address the problem for you, Ganamide (who wrote above), but for me, I finally got to the point where I had missed critical appointments with clients and couldn't wait around for the DroidX Calendar Reminder Problem to be resolved.
So Verizon Wireless and Motorola (maker of DroidX) and Google (maker of Android OS) all have "negative points" in my book for allowing such a problem to continue without proper resolution.   Apple, on the other hand, gets "positive points" in my book for making a product that is rock solid and works well.
