PowerMac G5 (early 2005) Airport Extreme.

I am new to Mac and I recently purchased an older PowerMac G5 (early 2005) to practice on, Dual 2.3 GHZ.  I want to use an Airport Extreme Card to connect to my network wirelessly.  Now I cannot find an antenna wire or antenna card.  The case does not have an Airport antenna connector.  I currently use a USB adapter for wireless access.  Any ideas on what is needed to complete the wireless components so it works?

  • PowerMac G5 (Early 2005) Mouse Issue

    Good day folks,
My apple mouse just began to misbehave. The little track ball on the top that I use to scroll pages stopped scrolling up. It works normally when scrolling down, but not even a hint of motion scrolling up.
I checked the settings in the control panel and switched usb ports that the mouse is plugged into to no avail.
Is there something that can be done with this unit? Are there any web pages that speak about opening the mouse up and repairing/cleaning this unit?
    TIA

Thanks so very much. I used a combination of methods described in the link that worked. I did not have to open it. I Inverted the mouse and used a just a hint of isopropyl alcohol on the ball. Then rolled the ball gently on a piece of printer paper.
The long winded point is, thank you for your help.

  • Airport Extreme (2005 model) compatible with PCs?

Hello, been a while since Ive been on the boards maybe you can help.
Have an airport extreme base station from 2005. Mac powerPC G5 tower and Macbook are both connecting fine. However, HP pc and dell laptop recieve 'limited or no connectivity', even though both PC models can see
the airport device. They show 'excellent' signal strengh, yet cannot access
the web via the airport extreme. Not sure how they can see the airport if
they are not compatible, perhaps my setting are not in order. Any info
    appreciated, thank you!

The 2005 AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) creates a standard 802.11b/g wireless network. Therefore any device capable of connecting to a standard 802.11b/g wireless network can connect to the network provided by the AEBS.

  • Airport Extreme (Mid-2005)

Not exactly sure if this is where to post, but if there are any moderators that see's this being in the wrong place, please move it if you could.
I have Mid-2005 AirPort Extreme, 20mb per/s internet (Broadband) and I'm getting 4mb - 6mb per/s, I believe that the AirPort is just getting old and it worn out. 4 Laptops have used it for 3 years. For the past four months, 7 computers have been connected with it. I've reset the configurations to it's maximum, I keep checking to make sure that it won't change. *Anyway possible that I can make it so it's doesn't make the computers have a weak signal and have slow internet connection without buying a new one just to save $180? I have considered an new one though, not much of a problem.*
I'm sure it's not the internet, I've used the cord from the internet modem and plugged it into a computer and tested it at "SpeedTest.net" and I get 17 - 19 MB per/s.
    Help is very appreciated! Thanks!

    Wildmnky247, welcome to the discussions!
I can't speak for other users of course, but the likely reason that you have not seen a response to your original post is that we simply don't know.
You're asking about performance in your network, but didn't tell us anything about one of most important elements....the quality of your cabling. The regular contributors to the forum do not engage in guesswork and rarely offer a personal opinion on an issue. You are really asking for both in your post.
You say that you believe that your Extreme is old and worn out. I take that at face value. Why not investigate whether Apple will allow you to return a new Extreme for credit or refund within a short period if you don't feel that it offers improved performance in your network?
Please post back on your findings to share with other users if you decide to make changes in your network.

  • HT204057 Time machine back up via USB hard drive connected to Airport Extreme.

Why did Apple stop supporting time machine back-up via USB hard drive connected to Airport Extreme?  It worked very well.

Why did Apple stop supporting time machine back-up via USB hard drive connected to Airport Extreme?
Time Machine backups are supported via USB hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme"ac" version.
Time Machine backups were not supported via USB hard drive connected to earlier versions of the AirPort Extreme.
Some users who tried this on earlier version AirPort Extremes seemed to have some success with Time Machine backups....some had moderate success and some had no success with this. Count me in the "no success" category.

  • HT204057 Time Machine back up via ethernet on airport extreme

Forgive me if this is answered elsewhere, i just can seem to find the exact answer.
Can i plug an external hard drive into my airport extreme (4th/5th Gen) with ethernet and carry out Time machine back ups wirelessly? I've tried with USB connection to it and it takes far too long - overnight and its still not finished. also i'd like to be able to transfer / store independent files on the hard drive in addition to  the back ups, via wireless?
the other option is via USB 3 directly into my rMBP to do the initial back up and then plug this into the AP extreme, will it do top-up back ups from here which i guess will only be things i've changed since the last back up - will this work and if so which option would be best.
Truly i'd love to buy a new time capsule but after upgrading to my rMBP, i'm low on funds for a while..
    thanks,

  • Installing airport extreme on g4/533

I just bought an airport extreme card and tried to install it. I found the slot, but there seems to be something missing. There is a connector on the motherboard behind it, but no connection slot. What am I missing?
    thanks,
    ed

Your computer's slot is designed for the regular AirPort card, not the AirPort Extreme card. Installing an AirPort Extreme card into your machine may damage the machine.
The earliest PowerMac to include an AirPort Extreme slot is the FireWire 800 model.

  • Airport Extreme works in my ibook, not my powermac g5????

Ok, I have a question about setting up an airport card in my g5 powermac. In my house, I can use my ibook and connect wirelessly to my neighbors network with full strength and no problems. Perfect. Now, when I put that same card in my G5, I can see the airport icon at the top of the screen but it isn't finding any networks. I briefly ran through the setup for the card on the g5 but maybe missed something in there. I just dont understand why there is any setup involved anyway, I throw it in my ibook and I'm surfing the net immediately. I install it in the G5 and I get absolutely no signal. Anything I'm doing wrong?

A couple of things to consider off the top of my head:
-is the PowerMac close enough to your neighbors router
-is the card installed correctly, antenna maybe?
-does the neighbor have mac address filtering to allow ibook but not PowerMac
Try rebooting after the card is installed.
Also, found this on the Airport Extreme page:
This AirPort Extreme Card is not compatible with the Mac Pro or the Power Mac G5 Dual and Power Mac G5 Quad computers introduced in October 2005. To add an AirPort Extreme card to one of these systems, please contact an Apple Retail Store or other Authorized Apple Service Provider.

  • Is my PowerMac G5 Airport Extreme ready?

    Hi All,
I've just purchased an Airport Extreme Card for my PowerMac G5 dual 2.3GHz. The box says that the card can only be installed in computers that are Airport Extreme ready. How can I tell if my Mac is suitable?
Any advice will be much appreciated,
    Roy

Well - all G5s are "Airport Extreme Ready".
    Hopefully you have a pre-dual-core("Late 2005") G5

  • Using Powermac G5 as a Base Station w/Airport Extreme Card...

Hello. Can anyone tell me if I am able to install an Airport Extreme card into my Powermac G5 and use it as a virtual base station to share the internet and network with my Powerbook (which has an Airport card)?
I have DSL going to my G5 via ethernet, and would like to share it wirelessly with my Powerbook. The cheapest way, if it works, would be to purchase an Airport Extreme card and install it into my G5. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

    Yes it's possible:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107484
The down side is that the G5 has to be on for it to work and the setting doesn't stick between restarts or sleeping.

  • Does iMac G5 (2005) support Airport Extreme?

I have an iMac G5 1.8GHz purchased on March 2, 2005. When I go to the Apple Store page for the Airport Extreme Card (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=C16 8B68E&fnode=home/shopmac/mac_accessories/airportwireless&nplm=M8881LL/A) it says:
"This AirPort Extreme Card is not compatible with the Mac Pro or the Power Mac G5 Dual and Power Mac G5 Quad computers introduced in October 2005."
Since my computer is a model prior to this, I'm wondering whether it is compatible with the Extreme card or not. How do I find out whether I can install an Airport Extreme Card in this model?
And second question, if I can't use an Airport Extreme Card, where can I find an old regular Airport Card that Apple no longer makes/sells?
    Thanks.

No worries. Your iMac G5 is compatible with the AirPort Extreme card.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n upgrade options for early Intel Core Duo iMac

I have an iMac from mid 2006. I recently purchased a Timecapsule - partly for the wireless back ups, and partly to upgrade my wireless network to 802.11n. There is a software upgrade from Apple that upgrades older 802.11 a/b/g Airport cards in the iMac to 'n' standard. Here is the link:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/D4141ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mco=MjIzMDkzNA
The page states that the upgrade is compatible "If you have a Mac with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)". What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work. I have also tried to install Airport Extreme updates (2007002 and 2008004) and these report that the hardware is not compatible. Doing some searching around these forums and others, the issue with the original Core Duo iMacs not being upgradeable to 802.11n is out there - shame Apple weren't more explicit.
I have seen that there are various USB based 802.11n adapters available. Whilst searching on this topic, I also came across a site offering various Mac upgrades, including an upgrade to the Airport card to upgrade wireless capability from 802.11g to 802.11n. It looks like a straight replacement for the internal card - link here:
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=461
The company offering this is in the UK, but the product appears to be from a Sonnet, a US company. Does anyone out there have experience of installing this product (or having it installed) and can you comment on how it performs? Is it a seamless replacement for the original Airport card?

What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work.
If it says you need to have a Core "2" Duo processor, then it seems to me they are telling you very clearly that it will not work with the earlier Core (no "2") Duo iMacs.
The "late 2006" iMacs with Core 2 Duo (except for that one education model they mentioned) have wireless networking hardware that is 802.11n capable. When they were initially sold, Apple chose to NOT enable the "n" capability for some reason; maybe because the standard was still in flux and not enough testing had been done with the driver. Later, they enabled the "n" capability with a firmware update. But that was only possible because the wireless hardware was already capable of doing "n."
Earlier iMacs do not have this hardware so there is no way to enable it with a firmware or software update. 802.11g is plenty fast enough for Internet access (you won't notice a difference with "n"). If you are using Time Machine over wireless, it may take a while longer to do that initial backup (you could connected it by Ethernet cable when it is doing that initial backup), but subsequent backups are incremental, so the "g" versus "n" speed difference will not be as critical. Since your iMac is Core Duo (32-bit) and the future of Mac OS X is 64-bit, especially after Snow Leopard's release, it may be best to save your money and keep your iMac intact (not opened).
