Preserving Transparency from Photoshop CS3 to Illustrator CS3

Hello all,
I'm trying to figure out how to preserve an image's transparency between Photoshop and Illustrator. Both apps are CS3.
In the broader design context, I'm trying to move an isolated wine bottle from Photoshop into an Illustrator document. I'd like the neck of the bottle to overhang a series of dotted lines in the Illustrator document.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

double-click the background layer, so that it becomes Layer 0, or whatever you want to name it. Background layers are not capable of transparency, so you have to make the layer into a non-background layer.
A more flexible way to do this; instead of *deleting* the area you want to be transparent, while the selection is active, click the "make layer mask" button at the bottom of the layers panel. This is non-destructive to your original image, and can easily be edited or tweaked in the future.
I highly recommend learning to use layer masks while you are learning to use layer transparency. I'll bet Doug would recommend this as well.

  • Preserving transparency from Photoshop to Indesign?

I have never encountered this problem before, but of course while working on a large multi-page document with a quick deadline I do. Both .pds files and .png files leave a faint box around them that shows where the "rest" of the image is when I print both from InDesign and after exporting... when I look closely on screen I can see them but they are very obvious on paper. I haven't done anything different that I can think of, anyone know of a quick fix for this?

  • PS cs3 and Illustrator cs3 won't shut down

I have these apps intalled on two other win 7 x64 computers with
out any problem but on this win 7 x64 system both ps cs3 and illustrator cs3  hang up when I try to close them. It is a little intermittent on illustrator and at least once it has closed properly but most of the time it takes about 2-5 mins to shut down or it won't shut down at all.
Photoshop is worse and always either takes 3-5 mins if it does shut down but in most cases it will not shut down and I have to force quit the application. Any suggestions please.

  • Importing Photoshop files into Illustrator CS3

I'm running into a problem in Illustrator CS3 when I try and import a native CS3 Photoshop file. If I try and place the file as a linked file I get an application error stating that there was insufficient virtual memory. And, if I select cancel I get a run time error and Illustrator crashes.
If I try and embed the file I get the same results. It doesn't seem to matter what the file size is and .tif's work just fine up to huge sizes 100Mb+.
As to the system I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate (x64) 8Gb of ram, two SCSI drives with virtual ram assigned to both so memory issues, well, shouldn't be issues.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Ok, so ADOBE needs to get up off their a$$e$ and address this problem, However some of you guys make it sound like its the end of the world... Here's a way to go around it in the meantime- at least this is how my PC is reacting (you might not be as lucky, but worth a try)
After getting my "insufficient virtual memory" error, try closing Illustrator down and then open the file from the OS window (not from within illustrator or browse)by double-clicking the file you'll automatically open Illustrator,it might take a couple of tries but after my second attempt it opened my file (took a little long) and I got a different error message "there was an error with the embeded file what do you want to do - replace file, correct file, ignore file, cancel" (msg not verbatim but close - not at my comp right now)
Then just ignore the files delete the links (they'll show up as blank boxes) If your just using those embedded psd's for previewing purposes you'll just have to save a flattened tiff everytime you make a change and keep saving over that same tiff so illustrator will automatically update it to you illustrator file.
sorry for the long post, but hopefully it helps ease the pain!

  • Export from Indesign CS3 to Illustrator CS3

I would like to know if thre's any kind of file format that allows me to pass a documente that i've created in Indesign CS3 to Illustrator. The PDF file makes that every word in the Indesign document, became a single text box on Illustrator CS3. All the other elements, when I open the PDF file that i've created in Indesign, are grouped and when i ungrouped them they charnge (sometimes color, or other things)
    Thanks

Illustrator is not a general purpose PDF editor. For starters it can't
    handle multiple color modes.
If you want your artwork in Illustrator you should create it there. If
you must get an ID file into AI format you're going to have some work to
    do depending upon the layout.

  • How do you transfer pen tool drawings from Photoshop CS2 to Flash CS3?

I tried to copy and paste it but that didn't work.
I didn't want to redraw the entire picture in in pen again in Flash (so that I could later animate the drawing), so I was wondering how I could transfer the pen tool drawings from Photoshop to Flash?

    helpmepleaze a écrit:
I have an old laptop with Photoshop elements 5.0 and wanted to move that program to my newer PC but the program was too old so I bought and loaded Photoshop Elements 13 on my PC.  To import my photos from the 5.0 I did a full backup on a flash drive and then loaded the pictures to the PC with 13.  The pictures are there but none of my collections from 5.0. I read the manual and said I was supposed to be prompted to convert old catalogs.  I was never prompted and do not know how to transfer my collections in my catalog from 5.0 to the 13.
What you are doing is not only to install a newer version of PSE, it's also to migrate to a new computer.
The general solution is to do a full organizer backup on an external drive and do an organizer restore to the new computer (or new drive).
Use Backup, Restore to move catalog | Organizer | Elements 6 or later
The problem is that since PSE5 is an old version working with a different database engine, you must first use a conversion utility to create a PSE13 version.

So read that paper carefully, do the backup restore and conversion as described.

  • File with mask from photoshop placed in illustrator

Im having trouble placing an image from photoshop that has a transparent/foreground mask applied to it but when it is placed in illustrator the mask is not transparent and the full photoshop picture is visible.  How do I take an image from photoshop with transparency around edges and have it show up looking the same in illustrator? Is this possible?

What file format is your photoshop file, .psd, .tif, & .pdf all support transparency.
Whatever you see in checkerboard pattern in photoshop should be transparent when placed in Illustrator. Did you use a layer mask as I have on Group 1 layer set.

  • Print materials from Photoshop instead of Illustrator

    Hi all,
I occasionally have to print signage, and usually  "design in Photoshop> import graphics into Illustrator> replace text in Illustrator> save as PDF".
I just designed a 300dpi effects heavy image, and am wondering about the ability to save from Photoshop without having to mess with Illustrator. I've seen mention of "exporting in vector format" and it is 300dpi.
= Is my work-flow the most efficient way to do it?
= Can I essentially save/export a PDF from Photoshop that will keep the text vector and print as it would if exported from Illustrator?
Your advice and input is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

For the first question I think it is not efficient. For efficiency I would either 1) Use only Illustrator or 2) Use only Photoshop or 3) Do your design in Illustrator and import into Photoshop. The last option probably depends on the subject matter of the document, but still the output options from Photoshop are preferred by some over Illustrator.
Question 2: You can get high quality PDF output from Photoshop. Below is a small portion of a pdf file created by Photoshop and shown in Acrobat. It is being shown at 2400% magnification and shows 30 pt vector text and portions of two circles. The circle on the right is a simple pixel rendering and the circle on the left is a vector shape - the difference is evident.
If you work in Photoshop alone I would suggest starting with two pieces of information to create your initial working document - the number of pixels per inch (not printer dots/inch) you think you need and the size of the desired printed document - multiply them. If you wanted 500 pixels/inch and a 6" x 4" print then set your photoshop document to 3000 x 2000 pixels (minimum). Also, use vector elements in your document wherever possible.

  • Two Major Regressions from Photoshop 6.0 to CS3

    Hello,
I'm trying to convert a multi-page PDF to individual GIF files, one per page, in Photoshop. Sounds pretty easy, but alas...
I have Photoshop 6.0 running on an eight-year-old desktop running Windows XP with 512MB of RAM, and I have Photoshop CS3 running on a four-year-old laptop running Windows XP with 1GB of RAM. (Photoshop 6.0 is faster. Why did I pay $1,000 again?)
That being said, that's not really the problem. There are two main problems with CS3 and they've been driving me slightly nuts.
In Photoshop 6.0, there is a command under File -> Automate that lets you convert a multi-page PDF file to PSD files using a simple dialog box. It's a quick and efficient process that I used to use all the time. In Photoshop CS3, this dialog has been deprecated apparently in favor of the more powerful File -> Open dialog box for PDFs. Unfortunately, this dialog is unbelievably slow on multi-page PDFs--especially PDFs with several hundred pages, as it attempts to draw thumbnails for each page. Furthermore, even once the thumbnails are stored in memory, there's no way to convert the entire file to another format one page at a time in the manner that Photoshop 6.0 allows. You have to open all of the pages at once and then you can write a script to save them, but if my PDF happens to be 352 pages long, that means 352 simultaneously open windows. The swap file can't handle it.
This brings me to my second point. Even if you somehow are able to get all of the PDF pages converted to individual PSD files (perhaps by using a handy eight-year-old desktop on the same network with an older version of Photoshop, ahem), then trying to use an Action to automate the process of saving all of those PSD files as GIF images is incredibly painful in Photoshop in CS3. In Photoshop 6.0 it works perfectly, but CS3 has an issue with giving back the swap space after each successive image is opened. In other words, I can only open (and then close) a certain number of pages in sequence before I run out of hard disk space because Photoshop's swap file never gets smaller--it only grows with each new file that's opened. This seems to be just an unbelievably poor implementation of basic memory management techniques, and if it's some default setting that I don't know about, then there are serious UI issues with this release because no one would actually want their software to work like that, always eating up memory.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to solve these problems in Photoshop CS3, please let me know. Otherwise, I hope you're listening, Adobe...

More memory! 2GB minimum if your notebook will handle it.

You can un-deprecate it by copying the following file (YFMV)
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 6.0\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop
    Only\Automate\MultiPDFtoPSD.8LI
    to here:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\Automate
Fire up CS3, and presto, you are back on the air with the old script from
    ps6.

  • Problems with white text & transparency from Photoshop to Acrobat

    Hello Adobe Community!
What I am doing: I have a design I created in Photoshop CC. This design has a transparent background. I am attempting to save this as a PDF in photoshop so I am able to open it in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro and print it on any color paper with only the design showing
Issue: When I open the saved PDF in Acrobat. I can only see my white text and a faint outline of part of my design, and not even all the rest of the design.
Then when I print it on color paper only the text shows up (with black stroke) on the paper along with my crop marks I made in the PS design. also when printed on color paper the text become transparent for some reason (Showing the paper color through the stroke), even though the text was made white and the PDF document shows white text
    Here are my steps:
    1.Create Design
    2.Save as..
3.Save as type - Photoshop PDF
    4.[] As a copy, unchecked
    5.[Check] Layers, Checked
    6.OK

Optimize for fast web preview, Checked
    View PDF after saving, Unchecked
    8.Compression -
    Compression: None
The rest of the settings are default.
    9.Open PDF from file
    10.Print with default settings
    11. Look at my butchered design in print
    12.Continued Frustration
So for some reason its like Acrobat is 'Ignoring' the white in my design? I'm so confused and I've been at this for hours, going through forum post after forum post and it seems like i'm doing everything correctly but I'm not getting anywhere with it.
I hope I added all necessary information, this is my first time posting here.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Would someone mind looking at the file? any help would be very much appreciated.
Note:Also I inverted the entire design making it all black instead of all white. followed same exact steps as above, and it printed perfectly. My confusion/frustration continues.

You wrote: . . . also when printed on color paper the text become transparent for some reason (Showing the paper color through the stroke), even though the text was made white and the PDF document shows white text.
You can't print white using an inkjet or laser printer because there isn't white ink or toner in your printer.
The white needed to come from your paper which should be white.
All printers and presses use CMYK inks or toner.
What is the definition of White? C=0, M=0, Y = 0, K=0  so not a single droplet of any ink is being placed on the paper in any area that is supposed to be white..
Of course the color of the paper will show in areas where there is no ink.
When you see something white that is printed on a dark paper it using a special spot color Opaque White on a offset press..
(there is a single inket model from Epson that can print an ink that appears to be white.  The model is $7,000 by the way. the [white] ink is $350, all the other inks are only $90)
    From the Epson website:
Epson UltraChrome HDR White Ink introduces an all-new Organic Hollow Resin Particle Technology, which forces light to randomly scatter, producing the illusion of seeing the color white.
Notice that even Epson only claims it produces the illusion of white.
The only way around this issue is to print on White paper and print the "color of the paper" everywhere else on the paper that doesn't have your design elements.

  • How do I import work paths from photoshop CC to Illustrator

Making a vector logo for a client, haven't done this in forever and must be doing this wrong. Created a work plath in PS CC, then exported work path to AI. Opened the new AI file, and at first it appeared to be just a white box. I can see the work paths when mouse over the images, but only on mouseover. And one at a time. How can I just make the logo plain old visible?

it won't have any stroke or fill, because whatever stroke or fill it has in PS is made of pixels.
why not just start out in AI if all you're doing is exporting a path anyway?

  • Cut/Paste from Word to Illustrator CS3 for Mac suddenly not working

This issue regards Illustrator CS3 for Mac on a Mac Pro with 6 GB.
Exactly one week ago I created a number of Illustrator files by cutting charts from a Word 2008 document and pasting them into an Illustrator document.
In the past I have dragged the images (or clip art) or simply used Control-C or even Control-X, but by whatever method I opted for, getting the image from Word to Illustrator CS3 has not been a problem.
Yesterday I got a new chart and a request to replace an old image - one that I had created last week on Tuesday by the Drag/Drop or Cut/Paste method.   For reasons I can't begin to imagine the process simply won't work now.
I also find that if I simply select text in a Word Document, hit Ctrl-C and then try a Ctrl-V in Illustrator I don't get to see my text pasted in - ONLY if I already have a text block open and the cursor in place will I get to see the text copied over into Illustrator.  This is very strange and not at all how things have worked in the past - typically I would see the new Text Object just appear, and then I could move it to wherever I wanted.
I have opened up a number of old files that I know were created with copied text and also opened the associated Word files (earlier versions of Word) and again find that I can't copy text over, or even move images over - even though I clearly could do this before.  I have also tried entirely new files - also with no success.
I was at an Apple one-to-one session this morning and they were more than mystified by this.  I can Cut and Paste into Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I can't even cut and paste from Adobe Photoshop Elements into Illustrator CS3.   I can drag the Photoshop file (from the Finder window) into the Illustrator document and poof - get my image that way, but it's as an image only.  If the base image in question is a vector image or something else having a plurality of elements, I can't then select the elements in Illustrator to change their color, delete them, or otherwise play with them.
I have brought up a word document on another Mac system that also has Illustrator CS3 and find that it too can't drag/drop cut/paste between the two applications.   At Apple, we did confirm that such ability is operational in the new Illustrator CS4, but none of their store systems still have CS3 to provide yet a third system to test.
I have deleted my Illustrator CS3 preferences, tried flushing the p-ram, and of course run fix and repair permissions - no dice.
My Mac systems update daily and there is nothing in the main update log that shows anything for Adobe or Office (nor do I think there should be).  Adobe Update reports that everything is up to date, and I don't see a history file to know what might have changed in the last week.   Office also reports fully up to date and happy.
As I can cut and paste the images into an email for Mail and into Photoshop, I am fairly certain that it is NOT a Microsoft Office 2008 issue.  The fact that another Mac with Illustrator CS3 also can't cut and paste suggests that is is really not something personal to my main system.
It is almost as if this is some clandestine "update" intended to encourage me to buy Illustrator CS4.  Given that I bought Illustrator CS3 less than a year ago, I really am not eager to buy the new version.   The greeting on the Adobe Support page that CS3 is no longer the current version and therefore supported was most annoying.
I am really hoping that someone out there has an idea of what to try changing, removing and/or adjusting with respect to Adobe Illustrator CS3.

I tried the Select by Path option - can't believe I missed it - and found it made no difference.
I actually uninstalled and reinstalled the whole app.  When I tried to simply re-install (can't remember it's exact phrase) it got part way through and then demanded another disk - but I only have one DVD with the application - the extra DVD is for tutorials and it didn't accept that one either.  So I restarted that process and chose to completely uninstall.  Then reinstalled - hey with only my one disk - gee, just like the first time.   And then it seemed to work.
I was not aware of the save as PDF option - but yes I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 for Mac so that option is there - and it seems to work too.
There were of course a slue of updates, and I let them all proceed - but even with them all in place the system is fine and I can once again drag and drop / cut and paste things back and forth.   I just tried a text block and "The Quick Brown Fox" pasted in with a clipping mask about 10 times the size of the document, but other than that it was ok.
So I have things working again on my primary system.   Will try and figure out what's wrong with the other one - but a reinstall might be the easiest game there too.

  • Can't export an EPS file from Photoshop CS5 and open in Illustrator CS5.

    I'm on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
I am making DVD covers for print. The barcodes for the DVD covers have to be done in Illustrator. But the original designs are done in photoshop including the text. For years this hasn't been a problem. Right before adding the barcodes I create an EPS file from photoshop, open that file in Illustrator and all my text is automatically coverted to perfect crisp clean vectors, viola! I add the barcodes and export the PDF for the printers.
But now I can't open my EPS files in Illustrator CS5 even though I'm exporting them the same way I always have from Photoshop CS5. Illustrator says... "The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error." --> Note it does not give an error number after this warning like I see it does for so many other people.
I have been trying to fix this for over 10 HOURS spanning 2 days! I'm infuriated I can't get help from Adobe on this and have read all the forums and don't see my problem listed anywhere.
    I've tried:
    - Deleting the .plist file and the Settings folder & resetting my permissions
    - Uninstalling and Reinstalling Illustrator
    - Turning off all other applications
    - Creating more disk space on my hard drive (even though I have 200gb available)
    - Restarting the computer
    - Disabling my Font book and still I can't open the EPS file
I thought maybe it's possible it's the font I'm using Fontesque OT so I even tried converting text to objects prior to exporting the EPS file from photoshop to illustrator and turning off my font book, but still it won't open. And if I open the PSD directly in Illustrator, text comes out a bit fuzzy in the PDF I export.
If anyone can provide any solutions I would be so grateful! I'm at my wits end here, this should have taken under an hour to do and now it's ruining my entire weekend. I'm completely panicked because I was suppose to have these to my client over the weekend so they could turn them in for Print frist thing on Monday morning and of course Adobe provides no chat support or phone support after 7pm on weekday or on the weekend which is when this all started.

I never even thought of reinstalling photoshop, but I think this was a font issue. I'd never saved an EPS with Fontesque OT Regular enabled, only Fontesque OT Bold. Somehow I think the font was causing the problem because ridding the font from the equation allowed me to open the EPS file.
After 12 HOURS of trying different things I found a WORK AROUND...
    I had to:
    - Select the Text in Photoshop (with Fontesque OT enabled)  --> Select Create Work Path --> Covert to Shape on each of the text items
    - Save EPS file out of Photoshop
    - Disable Fontesque OT font in Font Book
    - Then open EPS in Illustrator add in my Barcodes and export the PDF
(the barcodes have to be added in Illustrator because they need to be pure 100% black with no CMYK color in them. You can't save them out of Photoshop that way, only Illustrator, otherwise I would have made my pdf straight out of photoshop like any other normal human
This work around is the only way I could get the EPS files to open in Illustrator and still have the text remain super crisp like a vector.
NOTE to others in the future about crisp text from Photoshop to Illustrator:
    - Simply "converting to shape" did not preserve the vector. You have to Select Create Work Path --> then Covert to Shape on each of the text items (with the font enabled) for this to work and preserve the crispness of the text. Even creating "smart object" did not truly preserve my vectors or the text crispness in the EPS file once I imported it into Illustrator.
DrStrik9 thank you SO MUCH for trying to help me. You did give me ideas that helped me figure out the workaround and also helped me feel not so alone as I struggled through this. I'm going to follow up with your other suggestions about reinstalling photoshop and also checking my RAM, etc. But I just want to that you so so so SOOOO much for all your time and consideration in this matter.
