Printhead fail

I have an HP officejet pro 8500...it was not producing quality documents.  I opted to purchase new printheads.  I took the old ones out and waited until the new ones arrived to replace them the next day.  I keep getting an error message with the new printheads that I need to replace them.  Did I damage the printer by leaving the printheads out of the machine for 24 hours?  If so, is there anyway to fix this or and I forced to purchase a new all in one?

Hello,
Here are some printhead troubleshooting steps that may be able to resolve your issue.

The printer has not been 100% for a few weeks. It would align the printhead fine. When printing, it didn't always print everything - one time blues would be missing, another black would be missing. Received a message saying the ink was out of date. Picked up new ink yesterday, installed it and the printer went thru it's normal routine - cleaning and aligning. It would print the page which was not good and then realign again.
I read up on how to change the printheads. Problem is the printheads are stuck over to the right. I have pressed the * button and done anything else I could find. What do I do now?

    Hey @carolinva,
I understand that you're having print quality printhead related issues on your HP Officejet 8500 Wireless All-in-One Printer. I would like to work with you today in resolving the issue of not being able to remove your Printheads. Now I understand that you have already tried new cartridges and run the cleaning and aligning on the product to no avail. At this point you have determined that the printheads are defective.
Just so you are aware there are two printheads in your product. There is a Black and Yellow Printhead and a Cyan and Magenta Printhead. Because your quality issue is affecting blues and blacks than both printheads may be defective. The printheads run for about $64.99 a piece plus tax in the United States. Also, there is a chance that you could replace both printheads and the issue not be resolved because it's a hardware failure of your ink system. Therefore, the next step would be to replace the printer. New printers do not use the same ink systems as your Officejet 8500 printer so the Printheads would do you no good if you have to replace your product.
Part Number for HP 940 Black and Yellow Printhead: C4900a
Part Number for HP 940 Magenta and Cyan Printhead: C4901a
I'm going to provide you steps on how to properly remove the printheads in your product. Because your printheads failed to initially move to the left I'm going to have you start by running a power reset.
    Step 1: Power Reset:
With your printer powered on, disconnect your power cable.
After 30 seconds, plug your power cable back in to the printer.
Your printer should turn on automatically.
Once the printer returns to the ready state, follow the steps below.
Replacing the Printhead for HP Officejet Pro 8500 All-in-One Printer Series (A909)

  • Alignment failure - HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus all-in-one printer. The printheads failed and I bought authentic HP printheads (two), installed them and I still get the alignment failure error. The print quality is excellent on all quality and alignment reports that I have printed. What is the problem and what is the solution?
    Craigranderson

Hi craigranderson, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are experiencing an alignment failure.  I would like to try and help.
I would suggest performing a power reset. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would also recommend following the steps in this document on an 'Alignment failed' Error Message Displays on the All-in-One.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • Photosmart C309a black ink cartridge will not print

    Hi.
I am having problems with my Photosmart Premium C309a printer. It will not print using the black ink cartridge. I pulled this printer out of storage and the original cartridges had run out. I replaced these with brand new cartridges. When printing a quality report, everything turns out fine except there is no text and no black square from the black ink cartridge (however the photo black cartridge DOES print). Printing a page of text just results in a blank page. However, images and coloured text print out fine.
I have tried a lot of troubleshooting steps listed on these forums and elsewhere. Soaking the pritnhead seems to be the most effective solution for others but this has not worked for me. However I cleaned the printhead very thoroughly and there is no trace of ink anywhere in it. So far I have discovered that it is a hardware issue rather than a software one as there is no black ink on pages I try to photocopy. I have tried the following troubleshooting steps:
Turning both the printer and PC off and on again
Resetting the printer to factory defaults
    Reinstalling the ink cartridges
Automatically cleaning the printhead (several times)
Aligning the printhead (fails - probably due to the absence of black ink)
Soaking the printhead in hot water (twice)
Rinsing the printhead under running hot water
Manually scrubbing the printhead with cotton buds
Making sure the cartridges are vented properly
I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem. I 've soaked the heads, I've put genuine ink in. I've tried everything but cannot get it to print in the Black XL.  Prints all other colors and the photo black, but no in text black. So irritated right now !!!
    HELP ! ! !
I've even did a hard factory reset.

  • 8500A won't print since I replaced ink cartridges.

Hi.  Ever since I replaced all the ink cartridges (with genuine HP parts)  on my printer it won't print except very faintly in two of the colours, and not at all in the other two.  I've cleaned the printheads, and tried to align the printheads.  Aligning the printheads failed.  Why would the printer suddently stop working after replacing the cartridges, and what else can I do to fix the problem?  I found a page about replacing the printheads, but can't find any info any where about where to buy these parts or how much they cost.  I tried to find a repair place near me but the search came up with no results.  Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

  • Photosmart 6520 Printer Error 0xc19a0013

Getting Printer Error 0xc19a0013, replaced half empty black cartridge with new one, still have same problem.
Did all the usual, Power Off/On, Align Printheads, Clean Printheads.  Black is not printing at all.
Sems this is an issue with the Photosmart 6520, where the printhead fails after a few years.   And the printhead is a non-replaceable/servicable part.
Too bad, I have $100 worth of Ink and no printer.

    Welcome to the forums @Sparkythree
I read your post about the error code you're seeing on your Photosmart 6520, and all of the troubleshooting steps you have tried in hopes to repair it, to no avail.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8610 - Error Code: " 0xc19a0013" (missing or failed printhead)

I purchased the printer (HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-one printer) in January, 2015.  The printer functioned properly - copy, fax, and scan, until two days ago.  Now, it does not print at all.  Received an error code: "0xc19a0013" (Missing or Failed Printhead).  An expanded version of the error code reads:  "The Printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed.  Error Code: 0xc19a0013.   The printer uses a removable printhead, HP Ink Cartridges 950 (black) and  951(cmy).  I have used HP Support Troubleshooting recommendations: all software and firmware for this printer is installed; the HP ink cartridges are not low or empty; removed the ink cartridges from the printhead and reinstalled them.
There are multible steps in the troubleshooting recommendation, but I stopped at removing the printhead.  Because of my technical inexperience, and there were too many ceveats (beware, caution, proper reinstallation, and etc.)  with removing the printhead that could cause greater problems.  So, I stopped at removing and cleaning the printhead.  Also, used the HP Printer Scan Doctor for assistance. The tool for cleaning the printhead doesn't work.   What troubles me most with the 0xc19a0013 error code is its explanation: The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed.  I can use all the help I can get to understand what is going on with the error code that I have received, and how to resolve the malfunctioning printer.

  • Photosmart 7525 shows 7520 series missing or failed printhead + HP not honoring 1 year warranty...

As you've gathered from the title there is two issues:
    1.  The Photosmart 7525 (alias:  CZ046A)  is no longer functions and says Missing or failed printhead.
    2.  HP's warranty check says warranty expired on Aug 31, 2013 even though it was bought Aug 6, 2013...
    Issue 1.
I replaced colour ink cartridges and this message appeared immediately after.
I followed HP's help guide and this did not clear the message or get printer working again.
    Details:
    The Printer's touch screen shows:
[ !]  Missing or failed printhead
The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed.
Also, the HP software that came with printer gives a popup (in WinXP SP3):
      HP Photosmart 7520 series
      (X)  Missing or Failed Printhead
      Cyan/Magenta/Yellow/Black/PhotoBlack
The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, incorrectly installed, or incompatible.
I troubleshooted following the HP online help guide (scroll down and choose 'No Code Displays')
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=ca&lc=en&docname=c01458034
The steps I took in brief (as per HP guide above).:
reseated cartridges, checked vents, turned on then unplugged printer for a minute, cleaned cartridge contacts, turned on then unplugged printer again, removed printheads and cleaned contacts
The last step the guide says is replace printhead or contact HP if still in warranty.
(as a former electronic repair person, then PC technician, now SysAdmin, I'm no stranger to following repair guides, and troubleshooting.)
    Issue 2.
I used the provided warranty check at the bottom of the aforementioned HP guide:
    http://www.hp.com/go/warrantycheck
The printer was purchased Aug 6th, 2013 and on Aug 8th I set up the printer and mailed the warranty card.
On March 6th, 2014, I entered the serial number and the other Model number  CZ046A
And HP's website indicated:  Warranty has expired  2013-08-30
So I used the "Online warranty dispute form".
Then next day an email from Sush "have updated the warranty of your HP Product".
On March 7th, 2014, I did the warranty check again
And HP's website indicated:  Warranty has expired  2013-08-31
I replied to Sush's email, nicely explaining the problem.
On March 8th, 2014, ATCHUTA RAO.V replied "have updated the warranty of your HP Product".
But there was no change and HP's website still indicates:  Warranty has expired  2013-08-31
So I used the "Online warranty dispute form" again and only received an autoreply on March 10th.
It's now the 20th, and I still get Warranty has expired  2013-08-31
It simply appears to me that HP is Not honoring their 1 year warranty on their product.
(For obvious reasons I'm not putting my serial number or ServiceTicket number online)

  • HP Officejet 6700 Premium - Missing or Failed Printhead Error Message

Can anyone help me troubleshoot the error message for an HP Officejet 6700 Premium Printer:Missing or failed printhead. The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed. This error message popped up in the middle of printing. I looked online and the only troubleshooting support they provided was to turn the printer off, unplug for 15 seconds, and turn back on. I did that 3 times now, and it has not solved the problem. Has anyone else had this error message and been able to resolve it, or will I just need to buy a new printer? I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Two months have gone by, and no feedback from HP whatsoever. It's clear that they are completely aware that there is a widespread defect on this model, and they have no plans to address it. I'm sure they weighed their options, whether it was in their best financial interest to either address the problem & provide support, or to sweep it under the rug & lose customers like ourselves. It looks like, in this case, we're expendable. I couldn't go too long without a printer, and since the definition of "insanity" is doing the same thing over & over while expecting a better result, I opted to choose a different brand. About 6 weeks ago, I chose an Epson WorkForce WF-7510 wide-format all-in-one. It retailed at $250, but is usually on-sale for a little over $200. It has been fantastic. It is light-years quieter & smoother running than HP 6700, has a very innovative feeder tray that opens & closes (and folds nearly flat in the closed position), and performs fantastically. It runs, looks, & feels far more substantial than the last two HP's we've owned. Claims that it's of office-grade quality isn't just fluffing / lip-service as it was with the 6700. It really is a professional-grade product. I'm sorry that it didn't work out with HP. They've lost a customer. I'm sure that we're far from the only ones. Based on this experience, and that HP is trying to avoid addressing what is obviously an epidemic problem for this model, I've learned not to give them anymore of our business.

  • Printhead cleaning every time I turn on Officejet Pro 8500A Plus and lasts for 20 minutes or more

Today I installed the printer for the first time, although I had it since two years ago. Just today I took it out from the box and installed it.
After the installation the alignment failed, but it was not such a big problem. I connected the printer to the internet for the first time and it downloaded and installed an update. After the update the printer started cleaning the printheads and never stopped. I cancelled that by opening the cover and closing it againg. After that it retried the allignment and this time was successful. After that I was able to print normally. Then I turned of the printer. After some hours I turned it on again and it started with the long printhead cleaning again until it said the yellow ink cartridge is almost empty.  It's an absurd situation as if it was a Jacques Tati movie. Any tips on how to solve it will be much appreciated, or at least I'd like to know if there is a not so aggressive way to cancel this process. I repeat, the printer is new, it had never been used, and the printheads and ink cartridges are new too and I have only printed two pages just for checking and three allignment pages, and it already says the yellow cartridge is almost empty.
The model is HP OFFICEJET PRO 8500 PLUS and my OS is Windows 98 (64 bits).

The ink cartridge may have dried up while sitting that long. What do the ink levels report? If empty, I would replace the cartridges
