Problem accessing windows xp from tiger

I just upgraded to os 10.4.3 from panther. Now i cannot access my other computer on my network running Windows XP. They are connected via ethernet through a router.
Windows computer shows up in the "My Network" folder but when I try to connect, i get the following message:
"This file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocal. You cannot connect to it." It worked fine before the upgrade.
Apple support suggested posting here as there answer...(!)
thanks for your help!
powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Trying to connect via SMB returns an error -36. In reading more about this, i think i may need to turn on password encryption on Windows XP (home edition). Just spent hours trying to figure out how with no luck.
What is a sample of a "different AFP server" for windows?
thanks!

I have a new Macbook pro and need to run some Windows software, it appears "Parallel" should work well from what I've have read. Will I have any issues or problems accessing and printing from various printers on my Windows 7 network within Parallel? Is Parallel in fact the best way to go?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Problem accessing Windows network - permission checking is inconsistent

I am in the process of making the move at my workplace from a Windows/Solaris environment to an exclusively-Solaris workstation environment. I have wanted to do this for a while but now that Evolution is bundled in with Solaris 10 I have finally embarked down this path.
One of things that I need to be able to do is access Windows shares on our corporate network. I am having a few issues with this using the Java Desktop system in Solaris 10. Here is a quick view of the windows network hierarchy.
    Windows Network -> Sub-network -> List of machines ->
List of folders on a given machine -> List of sub-folders within a given folder and so on ....
Here is what I am trying to do.
    1) Double Click 'Network Places' from the desktop.
    2) When the window 'File Browser: Network Places' opens, it appears that my Solaris workstation has automatically detected the presence of a Windows network. Very slick!
    3) Double click on the 'Windows Network (SMB)' icon.
    4) A list of sub-networks appear. Occasionally this list is not 100% complete. ie. there are 5 sub-networks but only 2 will appear on occasion.
    5) Double click the smaller network that I wish to access. The various machines within this network appear as a list of hostnames.
    6) Double click on the machine that I wish to access and a list of folders on this machine appear.
    7) Double click on the folder that I wish to access and a list of subfolders is presented. When I try to naviagte deeper an 'Authentication Required' window appears. I enter my username, password and domain. I also check the 'Remember password for this session' and 'Save password in keyring' options.
    8) I am prompted with a 'Create Default Keyring' window asking me for a password to associate with the default keyring. I enter the same password that I entered in Step 7.
    9) A list of subfolders appears. This is great. But when I attempt to navigate any deeper ... I cannot. A dialog pops up saying "The folder contents could not be displayed" with a message stating "You do not have permissions necessary to view the contents of the "foldername".
At this point, the file broswer gets in to a funny state. I try to hit the 'up' arrow to return to the folder which I could previously access but I am now greeted with a dialog claiming that I do not have permissions to access this folder. I cannot access anything past the first folder level on a given machine even though I could just a minute ago. This "funniness" clears up after some length of time. ie. if I come back in an hour, I can once again reach part 1 of step 9 without being greeted with permission errors.
Are there any SAMBA config options that I need to tweak or add to my smb.conf file to make :
    1) the listing of Windows networks be more consistent
    2) the permission checking to be more consistent and stable
Or does the issue lie on the Windows side of things.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Tim

Thought I would update this one myself in case anyone else was having similar problems with a baseline Sol10 install. I suspected the problem was with Samba or the GNOME Keyring Manager. I downloaded Sun's new Update Connection tool to stay on top of patches. (http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=42e02045) I installed a slew of GNOME and underlying OS patches and things are working now. Pays to stay up to date. ;)

  • Unable to change screen quality when accessing Window machine FROM my Mac

    Hi there,
I've been playing around with a copy of Apple Remote Desktop 3.1 and I'm very happy with the results when connecting to a Mac Server from my MacBook. We have quite a slow line so I use the sceen adjuster on the top-right corner of the screen to make the remote screen black & white to speed up the connection. I have another server here which is Windows server running RealVNC. When I connect to that machine and try changing the screen quality to black & white, it does nothing Can anyone change the screen quality when connect to a Windows machine from a Mac running Remote Desktop? If so, could you tell me your setup please?

  • Problems accessing Bridge/Minibridge from PS CS6

I was never much of a user of Bridge or Minibridge until I upgraded to PS CS5, I gradually became aware of the various conveniences offered and have been disappointed to find that, using CS6, although I can click on Bridge, see its normal screen displays, and select images that are then called up in CS6, I cannot do the reverse, i.e., I cannot call-up Bridge or Minibridge from within CS6. The only way in is clicking on Bridge first (perhaps I should say I am a PC Windows user, and recently moved from 7 to 8 and recently 8.1). The problem has been with me since I installed CS6 running Windows 7 and has persisted through the subsequent upgrades. It is therefore not OS related.
    I get the following error
    Error 2: photoshop is undefined.
    Line: 1
    - > photoshop.invokeBridge (false, false, ");
I suppose I could go back to avoiding Bridge, or get by with calling up Photoshop via Bridge. Perhaps that is the way it is supposed to work. But I would prefer to be able to access it whenever and however I want. Can anyone show me how?

    Hi Roger_Williams,
I have moved this discussion to the Bridge forum, where you should be able to get more help on this issue.

  • Tiger/Panther install problems - won't boot from Tiger DVD or Panther CD

    My Mum has an iMac G3 CRT, running at 500MHz, with 1GB RAM, a 20GB HD, & a slot-loading internal CD-RW.
The iMac in question is the model described here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac500indigo.html
She only uses the machine for email & web browsing, but because it runs OS 9, it won't run a modern web browser (it's stuck on Internet Explorer 5.1.7) so lots of websites don't load properly or work at all. This is fair enough as IE for the Mac hasn't been updated since 2001.
My idea was to upgrade the machine from OS 9.2.2 to (ideally) 10.4.11, or failing that, 10.3.9, which would then let her use the current version of Safari, or possibly even Firefox. (Any thoughts on which would be easier for a currently IE-using technically-challenged pensioner would be welcome, although I prefer Safari myself, despite its shortcomings).
The iMac only had it's original 128MB of RAM until recently, but I persuaded her that it would be a good idea to spend 70-odd Pounds on 1GB of RAM so that OS X could not only be installed (which would let a modern browser be used) but would run at a useable speed. The minimum requirement for Panther is 128MB of RAM, but I suspected that it would run like treacle on a 128MB G3, and I was hoping to go for Tiger anyway, which requires 256MB.
As Tiger comes on a DVD (I have the retail/generic version) and the iMac has no DVD drive, I borrowed a friends external LaCie FireWire DVD-RW drive (the Porsche styled one). The DVD mounted first time, and the Startup Disk control panel let me select it.
When I restarted, I got the initial OS X pale grey screen with the dark grey Apple logo in the centre, with the spinning circle thing below, but after a minute or so, I could hear the DVD stop spinning in the drive, and a few seconds later the dark grey Apple logo changed into a dark grey "circle with a line through it" logo, with the normal circle thing still spinning below. This is how things stayed for many minutes, so I just restarted with the external drive off, and eventually got back to a normal 9.2.2 boot-up.
Next I tried running the "Mac OS X Install" application on the Tiger DVD from within 9.2.2. This started and came up with a big Tiger logo screen with a button labelled "Restart". Clicking it brought up an OS 9 error dialogue though, which said something along the lines of "the Tiger DVD cannot be selected as the startup disk" with a number 2 in brackets at the end of the error message - like this: (2)
This error occurs both if I select the Tiger DVD in the Startup Disk control panel prior to running the "Mac OS X Install" application, or if I select the internal hard disk. I know the DVD isn't faulty, as I used it to successfully boot my own Mac (a Power Mac G4 Mirror Drive Doors) just the other day, in order to repair permissions on the startup disk.
At this point I gave up on Tiger and tried to use the first of 3 Panther CDs that I have. These 3 CDs are burnt copies that came with my own Mac and contain version 10.3.2.
The CD refused to be selectable in the Startup Disk control panel. It's icon was greyed out, and so I couldn't boot from it. I tried running the "Install Mac OS X" application on the CD from within OS 9, but got the same error with the 2 in brackets when I clicked the "Restart" button, just like with the Tiger DVD.
Initially, I suspected that these Panther discs might be machine-specific, rather than the retail/generic version, because of the first CD being greyed-out in the Startup Disk control panel, but then the error dialogue that matched the one I got when I tried the Tiger DVD makes me think that my Panther CDs might be generic after all. Examining the first CD on my own Mac, it appears to be generic, but I'm not 100% sure, as the CDs are copies and as such don't have the usual identifying information on the labels. There are no machine-specific files that I can find on the first CD, which is dated January 9th 2004.
Various websites mention that when Tiger was current, Apple would swap a retail copy of the DVD for a set of CDs. I've looked on eBay but not been able to find any. This doesn't surprise me though, as there will be very few copies of Tiger on CD out there, and even fewer copies that people would want to sell.
There are a few retail copies of Panther available on CD, but if my current burnt copies of these discs are in fact generic, then buying a new set would make no difference. Besides, I'd prefer to use Tiger.
The Tiger minimum requirements (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514) say:
"To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs: DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation"
What it doesn't say though, is whether the DVD drive has to be an internal one with Apple firmware/modifications, or whether an external 3rd party one will do. However, I know from various websites that it's possible to load Tiger onto this sort of Mac, and sometimes even older non-FireWire Macs, despite what the minimum system requirements say.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd be much obliged!
    Thanks.

The problem is now solved, but I'm not sure how I managed it, unfortunately.
Having read the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75430, I checked both my Tiger DVD and my first Panther CD, and neither had the firmware updater on them, despite what the article said, so I downloaded it. However I was sure I'd applied a firmware update to the iMac a long time ago, and the 4.1.9 version number seemed familiar.
When I checked, I had in fact already applied the firmware update a few years ago!
I tried running the "Mac OS X Install" application on the Tiger DVD from within 9.2.2 again, and got the same error message as before. I was wrong about the error code though. It was minus 2 in brackets, not 2 in brackets.
The full text of the error message is:
    An error occurred.
"Startup Disk was unable to select the
install CD as the startup disk. (-2)"
I tried selecting the DVD manually in the Startup Disk control panel (as before) and running the application again gave the same error message (also as before).
I then went into Extensions Manager to see if there was anything there that might be interfering with things. The only thing that caught my eye was the LaCie SilverLining control panel (which I think was version 6.4.5a). This was something that originally came on a floppy disk accompanying an external hard drive that I used to use years ago at a place I worked, and I used to find it invaluable back in the OS 9 G1 Power Mac magneto-optical external drive days!
I couldn't remember what it was doing on the iMac, but I switched it off, and then clicked "Restart", hoping that when I rebooted (in OS 9) the error message wouldn't come up when I ran the "Mac OS X Install" application.
However, I'd forgotten that I'd switched the Startup Disk control panel to the DVD, so when the iMac restarted, the initial OS X dark grey Apple logo screen appeared, and I expected the dark grey "circle with a line through it" logo to appear shortly afterwards, but it didn't! The iMac booted up from the DVD, which then let me install Tiger! I was then able to apply the 10.4.11 update, plus all the others that Software Update provided. About half a dozen restarts and several hours later, the iMac is now fully updated & configured, favourites are copied over to Safari 3.1.2, and all I have to do is teach my Mum how to use the OS X Finder, Mail & Safari, as opposed to the OS 9 Finder, Outlook Express & Internet Explorer...
Switching off the SilverLining control panel seemed to do the trick, but since the iMac then rebooted from the DVD, not the internal hard disk, I don't see how it could have possibly had any bearing on things! Very weird!
Anyway, thanks to Allan Jones & spudnuty for their advice. All's well that ends well!

  • JNDI Naming Problem accessing Session Bean from Message Driven Bean

    Hi,
I am facing a very strange problem in JNDI look up accessing a Session Bean from a Message Driven Bean. I have a session faade bean(Remote Bean) which is being called from Struts Action class getting the home reference from the ServiceLocator (I have implemented ServiceLocator pattern to obtain JNDI reference for all EJBs). When I am calling the session faade EJB from the Struts Action class everything is working fine.
But when I am trying to call the same EJB from my Message Driven Bean, I am getting a JNDI exception (NameNotFoundException - No Object bound to name java:comp/env/ejb/EJBJNDIName). I am trying to get the remote reference from the same ServiceLocator which is successfully providing me a reference while calling from the struts action class. But the same ServiceLocator is not able to provide me a reference while calling from the Message Driven Bean. If I use the JNDI name directly like EJBJNDIName in the lookup it is working fine. The lookup for the name is working fine and I am able to call the Session Faade bean with that reference.
I am really not sure what exactly the problem is. If I have any problem in the ServiceLocator, it should have given me the same error while calling from Struts Action class. But it is working fine with the full name java:comp/env/ejb/EJBJNDIName calling from the struts action class. I am not sure whether Message Driven Bean has something to do with it. Why I am not able to get a reference of the EJB with the full name? Please Help.
    Thanks
    Amit

    Hi Bhagya,
Thanks for your response. I think from EJB container we can call Local EJBs with the full JNDI name. The session facade bean which is being called is a remote bean. From the session facade bean I am calling a local stateless session bean for database access. I am getting the reference of the local EJB from my session facade bean with full JNDI name "java:comp/env/ejb/EJBJNDIName". It is working fine with out any problem. My servicelocator is able to provide me the reference of the local EJB from the session facade remote bean with Full JNDI name. I am only having this problem calling from the MDB. I am really not sure whether what is causing it?
    Thanks
    Amit

  • Problems accessing windows share folders with iMac joined to the domain

    Hi,

  • Problems using Migration Assistant from Tiger to Snow Leopard

I want to scavenge files and apps from a Power Mac G4 (PowerMac3,5) running Tiger 10.4.11 before I turn it out to pasture. Most of them were migrated years ago to another system and have been updated and upgraded over the years, but a few apps have no modern equivalent. Now I want to do one last "pull" to pick up anything left behind all those years ago, particularly apps for which the install discs are in deep storage at best and possibly discarded.
I'm trying to use Migration Assistant in a nearly virgin Snow Leopard 10.6.8 system (installed fresh from 10.6.3 retail optical disc, updated over the network, lightly tested). It has a single admin account, no other user accounts.
Possible complicating factors: the Snow Leopard system is Server running under Parallels 10.1.4 on Yosemite 10.10.2 on an Early 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1) with  third-party USB3 controller in a PCI slot.
At present, I'm using a portable drive with both FW and USB interfaces as an intermediate storage (FW on the G4 to clone the system drive, USB on the Mac Pro to connect it to the virtual machine). SL sees the drive just fine, can copy files from it, and can even run apps from it. Migration Assistant sees the drive and offers to migrate from it.
    Two problems:
    1. No matter what user(s) I select for migration, Migration Assistant tells me it is a duplicate account. Proposing an account name never used before does not help. As a result, no user files can be migrated. (Obviously, I could copy them in other ways, but I think MA should do a more thorough job.)
    2. Migration Assistant offers to migrate absolutely no applications. Even applications that SL will run from the drive cannot be migrated. (Some are PPC apps, but SL will run them via Rosetta. Others are Universal apps.)
Am I expecting too much of Migration Assistant?
Is the Migration Assistant shipped with SL Server (and updated through Software Update) not capable of running under SL Server?
Should SL MA refuse to migrate any applications from a Power Mac, even Universal applications?
    Am I missing something obvious?
Is there key information I have omitted?

Not sure what you meant by that statement.  Although this "principle" may be more important to you than the twenty bucks, I know that my time is worth more to me than your twenty bucks!
    What apps are you using?

I was able to install Snow Leopard (client) in a partition, and it was able to migrate users and many applications from the G4 clone on the portable drive. Some of the apps even run.
Then I went back to my SL Server virtual machine and tried to migrate FROM the SL client partition. Migration Assistant showed the same symptoms as importing from the clone directly (no apps offered, bogus "dup user" errors). I am forced to conclude that either (a) Migration Assistant 3.0.4/1.1 is broken when run on SL Server or (b) my new SL Server installation is broken. I'm either going to have to boot back and forth to run the old apps or find their installation media and reinstall them in my SL Server virtual machine.
Even worse, I realized that one of the antique programs I still haven't dug everything out of is a Classic application that had to be kludged to survive Y2K!
    Thanks again, MIchaelLAX.
Anybody else have any clever ideas?
So, glad to see that Migration Assistant did work for you in Snow Leopard...
    More clever ideas:
Install Snow Leopard client in Parallels and use its Migration Assistant:

Here is a recent post I assembled for running Classic apps on Intel Macs:
With the newer Intel Macs, you have to run a Classic emulator such as SheepShaver, which requires you to extract the Mac ROMs from your older Classic Mac and then install Mac OS 9.
A related program is Chubby Bunny, which comes bundled with all of that included (google the term "Classic-On-Intel v 4.0.1 chubby bunny").

  • Access Windows Partition from OSX Lion - Tuxera

I am running OSX Lion and I have used Tuxera to gain read/write access to my Windows 7 Partition under Bootcamp.
I am trying to place a shortcut/alias to the desktop in Windows, on my OSX desktop, so I can drop and pickup data there... but the folders have a lock symbol on them, and I cannot seem to be able to write files there. NTFS-3G did not give hte this problem under Snow Leopard.
Does anyone know how to achieve this?

Why not make 3 partitions instead? One with your existing OSX installation and all Mac applications, second in NTSF format for Windows system and Windows applications only and the third one in FAT32 for all data (My Documents, etc.) that will be shared by both OS's?

  • Access windows files from maverick

I got the new macbook pro with os Mavericks.  Just wondering how i could access a file on my windows pc?

You need a separate backup of your OS X volume and a separate one for your Windows volume. Don't copy Windows files to a Mac formatted disc because you cannot read them on a PC. Your Windows backup should be on a Windows formatted disk - FAT32 or NTFS. Preferably the latter if you want to restore them properly. Unfortunately, you no longer can boot from the Windows partition, so you might as well get used to the idea of having to reinstall Windows.
You could try using Camp Tune to work with the partitions without harming Boot Camp, but you've overwritten the Windows bootloader, so I don't know if it will help.
