Problem connecting iOS devices to AirPort Extreme (5th Generation)

Okay, this is such a weird problem that I just cannot seem to solve. I have a AP Extreme (5th Gen) setup with most of the default settings such as:
Guest Network
WPA/WPA2 Personal on both networks
5Ghz turned off
Radio Mode, 2.4 Ghz mode, 5Ghz mode = Automatic
PPoE (using the AP as my router connected to my DSL modem)
DHCP (with a couple of reserved IPs)
Port Mapping (for a couple of WAN services)
So, here is my issue. The internet on the APE is working perfectly, no problems with any dropped connections or otherwise, everything is functiniong reliabily. The issue is I keep having problems connecting to the wirless networks using iOS devices (iPhones specifically). I have 6 Macs (various models, some g some n) connected wirlessly at most all times and they always remain connected. However, for some reason the network will just drop on the iPhone. After doing a hard reboot of the APE (disconnecting the power), the wireless comes up and I can connect multiple iPhones without issue. However, a day or two go by and all of a sudden the network just will not allow a connection on any iPhones (I've tried about 6+ iPhones, so it's not the configuration of the phone). Sometimes I'll be able to connect to the guest network, other times not. But again, the Macs will connect fine and there are no errors reported with the APE.
I just cannot figure out what the issue could be, why would all of my Macs connect but not a single iPhone? Are there any settings that anyone knows of that I may need to change. Also, would turnning on 5Ghz on this APE negatively affect the performance of my 2.4Ghz network (I do have a couple of machines that could use the wide channel). Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

I have the option of turning on/off the 5GHz network under the Wireless Options (with an additional network name). What does this achieve exactly, does it split the 5GHz and 2.4GHz radios in to separate networks or something? Would it be advisible to turn this on or leave it off?
This option allows you to use a different Network Name for the 5 GHz network. It does NOT actually perform as an on-off switch for this band. By default, both bands use the same Network Name. Both bands ARE separate wireless networks that operate simultaneously.
As far as the Radio Mode options, there is only:
802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n (Automatic) - Which is what I have it on currently
802.11a/n - 802.11b/g
802.11a - 802.11b/g
Sorry, the "trick" is to hold down the Option key before making a selection. The additional Radio Modes will then appear.

Extend 5 GHZ network with airport extreme 5th generation

I'm having issues extending a 5 ghz network with an airport extreme 5th generation. Here is what I have -
1 brand new airport extreme (2013) in the basement connected to the cable modem. It nearly doubled the speed I was getting over the 5th gen.
I moved the 5th generation airport extreme up to the office on the first floor. Due to the construction of the house and a mess that previous owners made with the wiring, it's cheaper for me to have multiple devices extend the network to various parts of the house than it is to tear open the walls and try to fix the coax issue. I have a 4th gen and a 2nd gen, as well as a few airport express models. So, the 4th gen extends the 5 ghz network without a problem. I use the 2nd gen to provide 802.11g (2.4 ghz) to some older devices that can't handle 802.11n. Both work fine. When I moved the 5th gen upstairs to extend the 5ghz network in the office it won't do it.
I did a factory reset on it, Set it up with a new device name, and set it to extend the 2.4 ghz network, and it works without a problem. If I change it to extend the 5 ghz network, it restarts and then flashes amber. The airport utility can no longer see it and I have to do a factory rest in order to get it working again. I downgraded the firmware, but that made no difference.
Any idea why the 4th gen works for this, but the 5th gen fails ?

At times, a Hard Reset will not completely clear all of the old settings when you reset the device, and as a result, you do not start from a true factory default.
If you have not already done so, try a Factory Default Reset this way.....
Power off the AirPort Extreme
Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort Extreme
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Not sure what else to suggest, other than taking the device to an Apple Store.....if you have one near you....to let them take a look.

AirPort Extreme 5th generation on Windows 7

I’m trying to install an AirPort Extreme 5th generation on Windows 7. The AirPort Utility installation software is asking for: 1) Router Address Number and 2) DNS Server number.
Where I find this information? (I have a broadband internet service).

You can run the AirPort Extreme in router mode, but you will have a Double NAT issue to deal with, which will slow down the connection on the AirPort and possibly introduce other issues as well. An online gaming console will not work with this type of setup for example.
Since the AirPort will be on a separate subnet than the Uverse, devices that are connected to the AirPort will not be able to "see" other devices that are connected to the Uverse network.
That may be a "plus", or a big "minus", depending on your requirements. For example, any devices on the AirPort network would not be able to print to a device on the Uverse network.
Unless you really do want two separate wireless networks both sharing the same Internet connection, and you want to deal with the Double NAT issue, life would be a lot simpler if the AirPort were configured to operate in Bridge Mode.
The AirPort will allow you to set up a wireless network in Bridge Mode, if that is what you are after.

What/any new features in AirPort Extreme 5th Generation?

Apple Support has deleted tech specs for 2G & 4G AirPort Extremes, so it's difficult to compare those previous gens to the latest. Can anybody comment on what/any new features are in AirPort Extreme 5th Generation?

FCC filings indicate a more powerful signal coming out of it, and different radio positioning. Longer range, and probably more even distribution of signal.

Can't connect wireless device to airport extreme

I bought airport extreme router second hand and am connecting it to HP desktop windows 8. All software is installed properly and router is connected. I have a solid green light, and internet access on desktop, but cannot connect wireless devices to network (kindle, cell phone, etc.) All wireless devices show excellent network signal strength, allow me to put the password in, but all show connected and have not internet access.

This appears to be a simple modem, so assuming that you reset the modem completely before you connected it to the AirPort Extreme, the next step would be to check to insure that the AirPort is in router mode and not bridge mode.
Open up AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Extreme, and then click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below that
Make sure that the setting for Connection Sharing is set to Share a public IP address
Click Update to save any changes, and give the AirPort a full minute to restart
Check the network again to see if devices can connect now.

Airport Extreme 5th generation

I just setup a Airport extreme (5th) to run my devices wirelessly. However, im still losing signal strength in the back rooms. If I put the Extreme in repeator mode, will that help? Or am I better off connecting a Express to it and placing it that weak signal area? Thanks!

Ethernet connectivity problem appleTV 3rd gen to airport extreme 5th gen

I have an airport extreme connected with Tivo via a Trendnet ethernet plugin adapter via electrical outlet, and it works fine. When trying to connect my AppleTV 3rd gen to another ethernet port of airport extreme with another faster (85mbps) Trendnet ethernet adapter via a different electrical outlet, my extreme goes from green light to flashing amber light and my wifi stops working. Only when I disconnect the ethernet and start using wifi for my appleTV, will the airport extreme start working again. It's driving me nuts.
My setup is ethernet (no cable modem or DSL modem) with the ethernet cable that supplies internet to my house coming through a router device (I think it is?) that is plugged into my airport extreme. However, I do have a double NAT setup as my ethernet service has its own NAT too. I tried switching from DHCP and NAT on the airport extreme to bridging mode as recommended, but then my internet doesn't work and I get a flashing amber light. So I went back to DHCP and NAT on my extreme and am ignoring the double NAT, and so the wifi works fine now.
I have done multiple hard resets of all devices involved including the appleTV, airport extreme (I have set up my network at least 10 times) and have unplugged my router device and disconnected the ethernet cable supplying internet to the house as well. Nothing seems to work. I called tech support, and originally thought that my 3rd ethernet port wasn't working, so they mailed me another unit, which doesn't work as well (in fact, I keep getting a message to unplug my cable or DSL modem or disconnect the battery pack to cycle it no matter what I do but that is for another time).

If the Apple TV was originally setup for WiFi, I suggest that you reset the device back to default settings and then configure it again with Ethernet plugged in. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Settings
As a test, connect a spare Ethernet cable of any length (that you know is working) from the LAN <-> port on the AirPort Extreme to the Apple TV for the setup.
Setup the ATV again and double check to make sure that it is operating correctly
Change the location of the ATV back to the desired location on the network behind the powerline adapters
If you have a problem now, the first thing to check is the powerline adapter and or wiring

I'm trying to connect to a VPN (Buffalo Technology) from home over Airport Extreme (5th Generation)

I just purchased a 5th generation Airport Extreme to replace my home router. I previously had a Linksys wireless G which gave up on me. I've got a handful of computers that will be hooked up to the router. One of them is a Windows machine and it needs to be able to VPN into work. The VPN is a product from Buffalo Technology. I don't have much further information than that right now.
When I try to connect to the VPN it connects using "WAN Miniport (PPTP)" then verifies the user name and password then tries to connect to "WAN Miniport (SSTP)." The next message is "Connecting to _____ useing WAN Miniport (L2TP)'... When I get to this step a new window pops up and shows the following error message:
Error 800: The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPsec tunel, the security parameters required for IPsec negatiation might not be configured properly.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? I didn't have these problems on the other router when it was still in business. Thanks ahead of time for anyone who has suggestions.

What this is telling you is that the Buffalo VPN client is attempting to establish a secure connection to your company's VPN server/applicance using each of the common VPN connection methods. Since it was unable to establish a secure connection, its attempt to create a VPN tunnel has failed.
Typically, IPsec is used to establish a secure connection. For IPsec to work through a NAT firewall, UDP port 500 (for Internet Key Exchange IKE) & UDP port 4500 (for IPsec NAT-T) must be opened. This is offered as IPsec Passthrough on most consumer routers ... except the AirPorts. That is because, by default, they already have these ports opened for VPN as they are known as "VPN Passthrough" devices.
I would ask your work's IT for assistance on how to properly configure the Buffalo VPN client to work with your new router. It may have been configured for the earlier router and those settings may no longer apply.

Problems connecting IOS devices with new Comcast wireless cable modem?

Just installed a new cable modem from Comcast, it is their new high speed unit manufactured by Cisco. of the three IOS devices I've tried, all running currently the OS , are having problems connecting with the error "Unable to join the network " Home-XXXX" if you keep asking it may connect but I have to be persistant. My Devices are iPad 4 g Retna with 30pin connection, an iTouch ,latest model with camers, and current iPad mini. is it me or the modem?

You have probably already solved this issue, but I would hide the comcast wifi network (dont broadcast ssid) and make the password very hard. Make sure that put it on channel that does not conflict with your Airport Extream.
Connect the Comcast modem/router to the airport extream's wan port with an ethernet cable.
Comcast usually ships the DHCP enabled. Use the comcast DHCP server for your airport.
Configure the airport extream to "create a network" set the network to "bridge mode".
Name your network, broadcast the ssid all on the airport. Now all your devices will connect everytime. Use can use the Comcast "private" wireless network for maintenance, etc.

My Airport Extreme 5th generation says it's not connected to the modem

My airport express died after 7 years. I upgraded to the Airport Extreme however when trying to configure it says I am not connected to the internet and that it can't find the DNS server. Any suggestions? I have Time Warner as my ISP.

Some cable modems store the identity (MAC address) of the computer/router attached to them and will work only with that one until they are reset (sometimes by powering them off and back on, sometimes by remote command from the cable provider). I have no clue whether yours would be one of them, but you might try the power cycle trick.
Another possibility is that your Extreme has not been configured properly to work with your modem. An example of a mismatch would be an Extreme trying to use DHCP to get an IP address from a modem not equipped to issue one.

Although I know that you have already tried a number of resets, please give the following (in order) a go:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

I am considering the E4200 v2 and AirPort Extreme routers. Can any give me the pros & cons for each? Price is about the same with the E4200 v2 $20 more.

I use the N model as an extender for the extreme atm but I was wondering if I could use both as extenders for the 1 extreme? please help if you know how to do this! Thanks in advance!

Static WDS Setup with "Mixed" (802.11g & 802.11n) AirPort Base Stations
Note: To facilitate the WDS set up:
Perform a "factory default" reset on all of the base stations that you plan on using in the WDS. This will get them back to their respective "out-of-the-box" configurations.
To avoid having to "switch" wireless networks within the AirPort Utility, temporarily connect the remote (& relay) base station(s) to the AEBSn or Time Capsule by Ethernet during the set up phase, and then, relocate it to the desired location when complete.
Be sure to jot down the AirPort IDs (MAC addresses) for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS. The AirPort ID is printed on the label on the bottom/side of the base station.
Main Base Station Setup
Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the base station you want to set up as the main base station.
Open AirPort Utility (located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows).
Select the main base station, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
Enter the base station password if necessary. If the base station is using the default password of public, you will not be prompted for a password.
Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then, choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu. Note: You will need to hold down the Option key in order to get this option on the AEBSn, 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), or Time Capsule (TC).
Click WDS and then, choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the base station you want to connect to this base station.
Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup
Open AirPort Utility; select the remote base station, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
Enter the base station password, if necessary.
Enter the same network password as the main base station, if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the WDS Main field.
Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.
Relay Base Station Setup
Open AirPort Utility; select the relay base station, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
Enter the same network password as the main base station, if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
Click WDS and choose “WDS relay” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the Main AirPort ID field.
Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the remote base station this relay base station will connect to.
Click Update to transfer the new WDS settings to the relay and remote base stations.
