Problem painting / blending UV seams using 3d paint tool in CS4

I am having a tough time blending seams on 3d objects in CS4. I create textures for 3d figures used in Poser, and Photoshop is my preferred 2d painting tool. Sometime ago, I bought CS4 pro thinking that the 3d paint  feature would enhance my workflow when developing textures. Unfortunately, I find the capabilities of CS4 to be somewhat rudimentary at best, so I am stuck using Deep Paint 3 to do blending. For example, when I try to paint over a UV seam with 3d paint on a wavefront .obj model the seam will not take paint. When I paint over the seam, a stripe is left several pixels wide  - whats up with this?  Do I really need to go back to the2d texture map to blend my seams/edges?  This seems somewhat useless as I originally bought CS4 to improve my workflow for blending edges and maps together. Is there a workaround that will allow the paint to actually be applied to cover the edges / seams, and preferably a number of pixels beyond?
Another thing I noticed is that the blur/sharpen/smudge brushes do not work to blend edges either, in fact, when I try to smudge across an edge, I just contaminate image with stuff beyond the edge from the texture map. - if the pixel just beyond the edge is black, smudging just drags some black into my image. Is this really how this is supposed to work? Even using a normal brush seems to cause contamination too.
Has anyone found a setting or workaround to fix this? Is the new CS any better?
below is a simple example of the painting problem on a simple cylinder I loaded. The original texture map I was painting on was gray.. to demo the problem,  I flooded with red, which left a gray line at the seam. then went to a green paint and and did a couple of strokes with a brush. You can see that even simple brush strokes dragged some gray into my image. Am I missing something, or is this as useless as it looks?

Yes, it's just the way it is. You probably have wasted your money and should have bought ZBrush or modo or Cinema 4D...

  • Bizarre file size saved after using Pen Selection Tool in CS4/3

    Bizarre file size after using and saving pen selection. Image file  size = 69.9mb at 300ppi for 14.2 x 9.5" image. If one crops the image about by hal and saves it, the file size = 34.2mb. If one uses the pen tool and selects the same area that was cropped, the file size = 75.1mb... this is crazy. I don't think the PS is saving it as a 32bit rather than a 16 bit.
    Any ideas of what's going on. Nvere have encountered such a problem in the past.

  • Problem with layer ordering when using 3D rotation tool

    Hello, I really hoping that someone might have an answer for this. I am trying to rotate a bunch of movie clips around the X axis (I think its the X in a sort of wheel. Basically what I did is I create a 9-sided polygon, made it a movie clip and then added 9 movie clips 3D rotated perpendicular to each 'face' of the polygon. Then, I made the entire thing a movie clip and 3D rotated the movie clip so that the perpendicular faces are facing forward, and then using 3D rotation to cause it spin, like the wheel on the Price is Right or a rollsign. However when the movie clips that are in back are rotated around the front, the movie clips that were in the front reappear, though backwards. I am guessing this is because they are higher up in the layer order. Here are screenshots of what I am describing: The "Success" should be in the back with a different one in the front, but it is showing up front, though upside down and backwards as it should be in the back. I am using CS5, AS3 and working mainly on the timeline as my coding skills for animation are not that good. Any suggestions?

    If you're using the timeline to animate the rotation instead of code just add in some frame scripts at the appropriate time to swap children. The easiest thing to do is to set a childs index to the top of the stack.
    In a timeline script where you know, for example, image_5 is coming around and you want it to be in the front, you could do something like this:
    // move image_5 to the top of the display list
    carousel_mc.swapChildren(carousel_mc.image_5,carousel_mc.getChildAt(carousel_mc.numChildren - 1));
    Not trying to make it overly complex but where you put the code matters. If you put it inside your carousel itself (I'm loosely calling carousel_mc in my examples) then you'd replace "carousel_mc" with "this", e.g.:
    this.swapChildren(image_5,this.getChildAt(this.numChildren - 1));
    Sprinkle those on the timeline where you know any specific image is supposed to be front facing.
    If you're rotating the carousel via code then you'll just need to pay attention to the rotation property and at specific points run this same type of code to position the image stack correctly.

  • Strange Effects When Using Erase & Clone Tools In CS4

    I recently upgraded from Elements 8 to CS4 and I've noticed that I have started getting strange effects with both the erase and clone tools. When I have been working with either of these tools for a while I suddenly find that left clicking the mous will cause a spurious reaction in another part of my image. The erase tool erases strips and the clone tool clones other colours and areas. I suspect that it might be due to the amount of memory I'm using but advice would be appreciated. I am running Windows 7 and  I have 4.00GB of physical memory and 11.8GB of virtual memory.

    I've found the solution to the problem, although it doesn't really please me because I've had to sacrifice the number of history states I can keep. I have reduced the number to 15 from 20 and the problem has gone away, which indicates that it's a memory problem. I'm going to slowly increase the number of states until the problem re-appears.

  • Dark path's edges after using shape builder tool or masking objects

    hi,

    I have one solution (pathfinder->dive objects and delete some dark elements on the bottom) but maybe someone know another solution for this problem?

    Unfortunately, I don't have opportunity to print it, but as you wrote, it must be a screen artifact. I exported this file to tiff, then i opened it in photoshop. Everything is ok. All of the edges are clear.

  • Using the scale tool

    When using the scale tool in cs4, I select an object and scale it. Is there a modifier key that I can use to quickly deselect my object and select another one? I don't mean click V to select the main selection tool then Q again for the scale tool. I'm looking to see if there is a key that you can hold temporarily to go back to the selection tool, like Photoshop lets you use the Cmd key.

    Select an object. Press "Q" and you can use Scale tool on it. Wanna de-select this object and select another one? Double-click outside of the object, and Scale tool is no longer selected. Then simply click on another object, press Q and use Scale tool on it.  And so on.
    This is how I do it... You don't need to press ctrl/cmd to exit temporarily Scale Tool mode. And if you need to simply go around the document (use hand tool, for example, while still having selected the Scale tool), just press SPACE, navigate to where you want, release space, and continue working with Scale tool on the previously selected object...

  • Problem painting on masks

    I recently upgraded to CS6 (version 13.0.1 x64) on a Mac OS X 10.7.4, and my masks are acting wonky. When I add a mask to a layer and then use the brush tool (using black) to paint on the mask to remove the mask from a portion of my image, nothing happens. If I invert the mask so that it's all black and then paint on with a white brush, I can get the effect of the mask.
    But then if I happen to use the brush on a part of the image that has already been painted (it is white on the mask), that part of the mask turns black even though I'm using a white-colored brush. Is there some sort of setting I need to change? What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi ccyphoto07, welcome to the forum.
    From what you've written, I assume you're sure you have the mask targeted in the Layers panel when painting on it...
    Any chance your brush is set to something like Color instead of Normal blending?
    Could you consider taking some screen grabs showing the problem (i.e. where you've painted on the mask, and it's showing black blotches in the Layers icon, but your image isn't transparent)?

    Click on the top right corner in the tool option bar of the brush tool and select "Reset Tool". Probably your blending mode other than 'Normal' is selected.

  • Trouble with sampling color while using paint tool... help!

    The other day, Photoshops started acting a little funny. Specifically, when using the paint tool, I'll hit option (alt) to sample a color to the foreground but it is sampling to the background instead. I have tried to reset all tools and no dice. Does anybody know how i can reverse this? it is screwing up my whole blending procress.

    With the paint brush selected, go to the Color panel, and click on the foreground colour so it has a feint white line around it.

    It sounds like you are talking about the cloning tool?
    Tool looks like this:
    Then when selected you can change the size of the brush and using Alt (windows) and Command (Mac) to select your region you want to copy then start to create you cloned image.

  • CS5 Paint Bucket - Where is it? Or, should I fill the shape using a different tool?

    I have CS5, and I am in InDesign. I am a beginner.
    I am trying to add a different color to each piece of the star below. Right now I can only color the entire star with 1 color (the image will not allow me to select individual pieces....I've used the Direct Selection Tool and it selects the whole star).
    First question, is using the paint tool the only way to do this?
    Second, if I do need to fill with a paint bucket, where is it? I saw a previous post from Mylenium that it is in between the prespective grid and free transform tool, and I just cannot find it. Need some direction here...thanks - Jamie

    Stix- You are right. I did for the sake of attempting this InDesign "exercise" - this student training manual makes it seem like you can add different colors to the star, which in my experience after playing with it - you can't.
    I do understand that Illustrator is a preferred program to use when doing these types of things so I think I will move forward and do my coloring there.
    Not sure why the manual is showing you can do it in InDesign...

  • I'm new to Illustrator and I am trying to use the live paint tool.

    I have an image that I have outlined into different sections with the pen tool and now when I try to select the outlines and go into live paint> make, it prompts me with an error message saying "Selection contains objects that cannot be converted. Live paint groups can only contain paths and compounds paths. Clipping paths are not allowed." Is there a way to convert this so that I can fill in the selected areas with the live paint tool, or am I totally out of luck? -Not sure if this matters but I have a photo underneath the pen tool's outlines because I'm trying to edit it into more of a 2D geometric print which is why I need to live paint tool to help me fill in the shapes.

    Put the image on a new layer below the artwork and lock the layer so the image cannot be selected. Did you use a mask of some sort? put that on the lower layer as well.

    Sorry for all the simple questions, but I'm having so many problems with Flash's drawing tools it isn't funny.
    What I want to do is draw a series of slightly diagonal stripes. In any other program, I'd use the line tool to draw the partitions and then use the fill tool to fill in the gaps. But in Flash, the paint tool won't do anything. It doesn't matter where I click - it won't work, and a little 'lock' symbol appears on my cursor.
    I know that an alternative way of drawing the stripes is to make a square, resize it and tilt it to exactly the right angle, but this is a slow and painstaking method, and I have to do a lot of them. Also, not all the stripes are perfectly straight.
    It's so frustrating, because I could do this in ten seconds with normal drawing tools, and I've spent about four hours already just trying to figure out this stupid little thing (because this stupid little thing is crucial to my project!). I'd be immensely grateful for any help. Likewise, I'd be very grateful for any help figuring out the brush tool problem on my other post. No matter how much I try and practice, I just can't figure out these drawing tools.

    I am having sort of the same problem but yours I think I can solve... is the layer locked at all?
    I can't fill in any drawing or shape that I draw out and it's a pain... Was wondering if this was similar to yours??

  • Paint-tool "jumps" in CS4

    I have these problems in Photoshop CS4 (Windows Vista):
    When I use the brush to paint lines (on tif-documents) it often "jumps" and paints the line somewhere else on the document.
    When I use the hand-tool to move over the document, it sometimes "jumps back". If I move the document to the left in several moves, it begins to jump back to the right after a few moves.
    When I zoom by holding down ctrl+blank space and "make a zoom-square" with the mouse, the square doesn't start where I hold down the mouse. It zooms somewhere else in the document.
    I hope someone can help me.

    Thanks for your help. I've tried unchecking things in the brushes panel, but that doesn't help.
    If I close photoshop and open again the problems go away for a while, but always come back. The weird thing is, photoshop worked just fine for about 1 month before this started.
    I have Vista Home Premium.
