Problem with a repair

Recently I had sent in my macbook for repairs. Apparently several components went bad and were replaced.
However, when I had sent it in there was an OS X disk in the disk drive. When I got it back from Apple the OS X disk was gone.
Anyone know how I would go about retrieving this lost disk?

Try to contact the apple store and or apple care and tell them your problem.
They could agree to give you the replacement if you indicate that there is an OS disk stuck in the macbook when you shipped (written on the list of service request) it or they might deny it if you don't have proper documentation to prove it.
Hope they are generous enough to give you the replacement without further asking too deep.
Good Luck.

  • Can't start laptop - problems with automatic repair, need acces to admin account but there is none. HELP! :(

    Hello,
I'm having problems with my windows 8 laptop.
This afternoon I shut it down, and went to work. A few hours later when I came back home I noticed the little blue lights on the keyboard (showing me that the pc was charging and that my wifi is on) were still on. Normally these are off when the pc is turned
    off.
I tried starting the laptop but nothing happened, the screen stayed black. I held down the 'on' button to force it to turn off, and turned it on again.
I then got a textmessage on the startup loading screen that there were problems with my C drive (only drive the laptop has), so it went to automatic repair.
*my laptop's language is set to Dutch so I'm translating everything :)*
    It gave me 2 options:
    1: Restart computer
    2: Advanced options.
I tried option 1, didnt work ofcourse, it just restarted and I got back to this screen, so I checked what option 2 had to offer.
I got to a screen with 3 options:
    1: Continue to windows 8
    2: Solve Problems
    3: Shut down
When I tried option 1 the computer just restarted and went back to the same screen.
When I tried option 3 it shut down as it should.
Option 2 gave me 3 other options:
    1: Renew PC
    2: Factory reset
    3: advanced options
Option 1 just restarted my pc and took me back to screen 1.
Option 2 I havent tried yet, because it erases all of my files. This is a last resort.
Option 3 gave me 6 other options:
    1: Systemrepair
    2: Repair with installationcopy
    3: Startuprepair
    4: CMD
    5: UEFI firmware settings
    6. Startupsettings.
I can't use option 1,2,3,4 because I need to log in to an administratoraccount.
The bad part is: the laptop doesn't have an administratoraccount.
It was my parents laptop, and theyve set it up. I always assumed the account was an admin because
I had acces to everything and didn't need a password to run things as admin and such.
    Turns out it isn't.
I get this message (translated) when I try to acces one of these:
'You have to log in as administrator to continue, but this pc doesn't have an administratoraccount'.
I can't believe microsoft added a check to see if the pc has an admin account on it, and even added a specific message to show when it doesn't, but they didnt add the option to just use these tools when there is no admin account present? What were they thinking!
Option 5 I havent tried yet, when I click it it says I have to restart to acces these settings, but I dont want to mess with something I know nothing about.
Option 6 gives me a few options like run the pc in safety mode, run windows repair and disable auto-restart after something has gone wrong with windows. But when I select one of these options it doesnt work. It just takes me back to auto repair. It just doesn't
    doe anything.
There are no other options. Nothing I can do. My pc is stuck like this. The only thing I *might* be able to do is a factory reset, but I havent tried, and that could also just give me an error about me not being admin.
Some backstory of what I think caused this problem:
I believe the problems started a week ago, last friday.
I'm using a program called 'AVG TuneUp'. This program gave me a message telling me it was 3 months since it had checked my C drive for defects or anything. And it asked me if I wanted it to do so. Unknowing of the problems that would follow, I pressed 'ok'
    (or whatever it was).
I had to restart my pc for it to begin, because it could only check the drive during startup. It went to 12% and stayed there for like half an hour, after which I decided to google (on my phone) if that was normal. It turned out that that option doesn't work
well with windows 8 and that lots of people's computers got ruined after using it. I stressed and I tried to shut it down, but since I was still in startup the only thing I could do was force the pc to shut down, so I held down the power button and it shut
down. I restarted and managed to abort the proces. The laptop started fine and everything worked.
A few days later a game/program I use called League of Legends started to act weird, because I could not log in on my account (for the game) anymore. Some error with IE settings, which I was unable to fix. For more info about that go to http://boards.eune.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/help-support-en/8Eoz315J-cant-log-in-to-lol-and-cant-log-in-to-steam-either-weird-coincidence.
Although I doubt it will help.
That forum post also contains a link to a post I made on the Steam forum about not being able to log into steam anymore. (Steam is another program I used). I wasn't able to log into steam anymore about 1-2 days after I wasn't able to log into LoL.
Also at the same time my Norton sortof stopped working. It showed up as active in my task manager and AVG TuneUp program manager, but it wasn't in my task bar and I couldnt acces the control panel.
Then yesterday I checked my pc for errors with AVG TuneUp's 1-click maintenance tool, and it told me my C drive was fragmented badly, so I defragmented it using the tool. Laptop still worked fine after that.
And then today I got the error on startup about my C drive having errors.
Long story shot: Problem is probably caused because I stopped the repair of my C drive with the avg tuneup tool before it was done, however its weird that I'm only experiencing (big) problems a week after that happened.
    Hardware info:
It's a Samsung Ativ book 6  (google it for all the specs :) )
    RAM: 8 GB DDR3
    CPU: intel 3230M @ 2.60 gHz
    GPU: AMD Radeon HD 8850M
HDD: 1 TB S-ATAII hard disc
    I've found this page:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-system/windows-8-taking-me-to-automatic-repair-but-no/6cbc995e-9ecb-4e28-8d6c-adabdecb8374?rtAction=1424369231072
But I don't really understand what the answering person is saying, and my laptop doesn't have a CD drive..
I really, REALLY hope someone can help me with this, because my laptop is basically 100% 'destroyed'.
    Kind regards,
    Christian Collaert

    Hello,
Perhaps the operating system is incorrectly powering down or shifting the wireless adapter to a low power state in order to improve run time while on battery?
Try going into the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC), locate the wireless adapter under the Network Adapters tree, view its Properties, and on the Power Management tab, disable (un-check) the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option.
Please let us know if that makes any difference (or not).

hello Mac attac, welcome to discussions,
I had the same problem just about a week ago, it's simple and easy to repair. You need to reboot from your Mac OSX install disc (reboot with the cd inside the computer), once you here the dong, hold "C" down, until... you'll see (not quite sure what appears)
Go in the disk utility in one of the menus, and repair your disk... It took about 10 minutes fo me to clean the mess up, now computer runs great!!
    Hope you'll solve your problem,
    Best to you

  • Problems with running Repair Permissions

    ok,
everytime my powerbook stays on for a while (maybe 1 to 2 days without reboot), my mac slows down. When I look at my iStat Pro, I see almost all my memory in the "inactive" status and under CPU, a high percentage is under "user".
I run repair permissions in the disk utility and this frees almost all the memory from the "inactive" status to "free" and my mac goes a whole lot faster.
my problem is that i get the exact same permissions repair all the time. It says:
    "Determining correct file permissions.
Permissions differ on ./private/var/log/secure.log, should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r-----
Owner and group corrected on ./private/var/log/secure.log
    Permissions corrected on ./private/var/log/secure.log"
is there some way to fix this problem so that i don't have to run a permissions repair all the time??
    thanks for any help.

It's just a log file. Don't worry about it.
Using Repair Disk to "free" memory is a waste of time. Your computer's total available RAM is always the sum of "Inactive" RAM and "Free" RAM. It may be useful for you to read Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor.

  • Problem with MacBook Repair Extension Program for Hard Drive Issues

I have a macbook that would be covered by the program (http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/hd/repairextension/).
Since I bought it Nov 2006, it is not covered by the 3 year extension, but (to me) it looks like it is covered by the sentence +"or until August 15, 2010, whichever provides longer coverage.+"
Apple Italy is currently refusing to apply the coverage, saying that only the 3 years coverage applies.
So why do Apple wrote "whichever provides longer coverage"?
To my laptop, longer coverage means August 15, 2010.
    Isn't it?
Help needed! ... and really much appreciated!

Nobody from Apple here (at least officially). We're all users just like you. I guess if Apple in Italy doesn't want to replace your hard drive, that's the end of the story. As I mentioned, hard drives are cheap now. The real question is your data on the present hard drive. If the computer still boots, I would strongly suggest you try to backup your data ASAP.
I agree that this issue comes down to "whichever provides longer coverage". However, that aside, I have Apple Care on my MB and it only covers me for 3 years. Since I bought my MB in Nov '07, I'm covered until Nov '10. It doesn't make a lot of sense that you would be covered for a longer period than my Apple Care (which again is 3 years).

  • Strange occurrence with permission repair/disk utility

Aloha all, I'm having a strange problem with disk repair and wonder if anyone else has seen this and/or how to fix it. If I have my external HD used for Time Machine turned off and open Disk Utility to check/repair permissions, none of my drives show up in the column on the left, and Disk Utility just hangs with the little spinning symbol. I let this run for over an hour before I had to force quit it. If however the external drive is on, everything works as normal in Disk Utility. Anyone know what might be causing this? I often eject and turn off my external drives at night, after I turn off Time Machine. I don't really need it backing up every hour during the night, and the drive is getting full so every little bit of space helps. I have deleted the permission file on my main drive and that didn't help. I'd like to be able to turn the external drive off and still be able to use disk repair. Mahalo for any tips, suggestions, or info you can provide. JB

I am running Snow Leopard. Transferring the same texts to TextEdit has no problems, so this is a Pages problem, I think.  Corruption of Times New Roman and Arial fonts, I suspect, but where? and what do I do about it? I just need to be pointed to a source of advice, I think.

  • A bad experience with Lenovo repair service...got more problems now than when I brought it in

Paragraphs with ** may be skipped if you just want the short and sweet version:
**I bought my X61 in April 2008 and everything was great. I loved the laptop except for one thing: it had an extremely tight PC slot (although it was completely functional). I had a difficult time inserting my PCMCIA soundblaster sound card and removing it was even more difficult. I literally had to brace the laptop between my left arm and chest and manually pull the card out because it was so tight. I am an university student so I did not have time to deal with that problem because it was during final exams. I finally found some time recently to bring my laptop for repair. I called Lenovo and they recommended me to bring it in to my city's authorized business partner repair shop because they said it would be faster. So that is what I did. It turns out that they have to replace the system board because the PCMCIA slot was attached to it. In the end it took 3 trips (30 min drive each way) over a span of 2 weeks before I actually got my laptop fixed because the system board was backordered. Finally 2 days ago I got my laptop back and indeed, the PCMCIA slot is not tight anymore...yay! And that was when all the trouble started:
After bringing it home, I started to find more problems with the laptop than before I brought it in:
First thing I did was try to reactivate the TPM chip but it turns out that the TPM chip already had an owner. I found that strange and tried my previous passwords and none worked.
I can no longer output my display to my external LCD monitor. It doesn't work regardless of whether I plug the VGA cable directly to the laptop or via the Ultrabase 6. I know it's the not the cable because it works with my older laptop. I spent countless hours trying to figure this out and uninstalled and  reinstalled several versions of Intel X3100 video driver as well as Thinkvantage Presentation Director. Even during boot-up it does not show up on my external monitor.
The Bios date/time and other settings get reset each time the external power is lost (e.g. remove battery or unplugging AC). This usually indicate that the computer CMOS battery is dead or bad.
From the above problems, I can only conclude that Lenovo sent a used defective system board. There could be other problems that I don't know about yet.
Initially I had tried to call Lenovo technical support (3x) and they were next to useless. The first time I called, the technician pretty much blew me off telling me that they can't help me and told me to search Lenovo support page for the answers to my problems. I couldn't believe it! Furthermore, I wanted to know how I can reset the TPM password and the first rep told me that  that they would need to charge me for walking me through the steps. (in the end I figured it out on my own)
I am very dissatisfied with how things turned out. I know I now have to get my system board replaced again but this has been way more trouble than it is worth. I had spent many hours driving back and forth to the repair depot and even more hours troubleshooting the problem on my own because Lenovo support couldn't help me. It has completely destroyed my confidence in Lenovo. How can they be doing repairs with defective used parts??? What options do I have?

    Tallshorty,
Wow!  Apologies for such an experience.   First, could you send me a PM with your contact information, your system model & serial #, and your service case number(s) if you have them handy?   I will ensure you get some help.
Secondly, service parts may be new or refurbished. -  Sorry to hear about this TPM problem - we can look into the process to ensure this is tested for, and ensure this does not happen, although it sounds like you've solved this part.
    Thanks for sharing your story.

  • Problem with repaired neo fis2r

I am experiencing performance problems with my neo tha t I am not sure where to begin trouble shooting. I had an video card falure(delaminated pin on agp ) which resulted in damage to the agp slot I rma 'd my neo and it returned marked repaired with a grey agp slot , bios 1.4 ( had 1.6 installed) and the same serial #. I reinstalled all components. noted the retrograde bios and flashed to 1.8. then I attempted to return all settings to theyre original state only to find that I can't overclock! previously I got 250mhz clock with perf mode set to ultra turbo and ram set to 333mhz . now I can't get past perf mode fast and 205mhz no matter what. I see references to bios 1.8 as being not very overclockable.this may be the problem but  the waters have been muddied by the multitude of events. I am not an expert and do not know where to start. I was so thrilled with the performance of my neo and now I am at a loss . Is the bios responsible for this abysmal performance or is my system still compromised? I don't know what to do to determine its state. my system is as follows:-
    neo fis2r( of course)
    2.4c p4 with zalman alcu 7000
    ati 8500dv
    512mb samsung 400mhz ram
seagate barracuda sata 150 raid 0
    pci modem card
    thermaltake xaser2 case
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
    kev

essentially I am not just concerned about it's current inability to overclock. but more in the fact that b4 the repiar of the board I was able to overclock with no difficulty and no special considerations. in fact when I look at my little log of bios settings the agp clock was set at 66.6/33.3 after all the overclocking. and now with EXACTLY the same components( ati card repalced but physically identical)  none of those same settings work. did the failure damage other components whose failure is not yet critical path or has the bios upgrade caused instability?

  • Problem with subsequent deltas after converting Full requests to Repair.

    Hi All,
We are working on changing an existing system from loading from multiple extractors directly to a cube to loading each extractor to its own DSO and then combining the data in a 'consolidated' DSO and then on the the cube.
To avoid downtime in the production system when we do the cut-over we have decided to do full loads of historical data up to Sept 2007 and then do delta loading from then on.
So the steps so far have been:
    1) Full load of data to low-level DSO's. to 09 2007.
    2) Full load of data to 'consolidated' DSO.
    3) Convert Full requests in consolidated DSO to Repair Full Requests (see SAP Note 689964).
    4) Initialise Without Data Transfer to the 'consolidated' DSO.
    5) Delta Initialise from 10 2007 from the source system to the low-level DSO's.
    6) Delta from low-level DSO to consolidated DSO.
My problem is with step 6 - no records are loaded into the consolidated DSO after delta load of data to the low-level DSO - the load process runs correctly but tells me that there was no data available.
Can anybody see if there is a problem with my approach - I thought this was the correct way to convert from full loading to delta loading ?
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all
    Graham

    Hi Siva,
    Thanks for the reply.
I understand that there is only an active table with a write-optimised DSO - but delta processing should still be possible at the request level
(SAP Help on Write-Optimized DataStore Objects http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/b6/de1c42128a5733e10000000a155106/frameset.htm)
Since write-optimized DataStore objects do not have a change log, the system does not create delta (in the sense of a before image and an after image). When you update data into the connected InfoProviders, the system only updates the requests that have not yet been posted.
In my case the 'new' request loaded into the DSO have not been loaded into the connected InfoProvider, so it should be processed.
    Regards
    Graham

  • MacBookPro SSD Error- ALERT: The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system.

MacBook Pro OS x Mavericks. I have Sandisk 256GB SSD and I am getting a below error message.
ALERT: The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system.
Does anyone know how to resolve this error and fix it ? unfortunately I don't have a Time Machine backup. Thanks!

Have you tried to run the verify/repair permissions and verify/repair disk through the recovery disk? If that didn't work then I would reinstall the OS after backing up. If that still doesn't work I would take it in.

Far enought I agreed !! These things happen ok so then I received my computer back 4 weeks later and all they did was reinstall windows .... A waste of my time a monkey could do that !! The problem was still there so I returned it after I got no where with costumer support saying that it should have been fixed !! So sent it back again took another 4 weeks and recieved it yesterday went to open the box and all the glass from the screen was smashed to pieces the sides of the boxes it was packed in had no protection !! How stupid can you be !! Now I'm waiting to ring them again on Monday and demand a replace or my money back spent a lot of money on this and feel I have been robed !! Anyone any advice ?

Just a quick update rang Lenovo and once again they have done nothing they want to send my computer away again for another 4 week for there own lack off packaging any other company would have replace it by now best advice to anyone buy off dell cause Lenovo ain't worth **bleep** !!
