Problem with airport configuration, ip addresses

i have an old snow base station that i am attempting to use to allow a pair of laptops to connect to the internet in my apartment.
i have manually entered the isp information into the administrator (ip, subnet, router address). however, only one of the laptops, the new macbook, is able to actually browse the internet with a 80.xxx.xxx.xx ip address. my powerbook is given a 10.0.1.x ip and while the network option in the system settings assures me that it can connect to the internet, i cannot. if i attempt to change the settings in the administrator's internet tab to allow the base station to distribute ip addresses within a certain range (instead of a single static ip) i am given an error message that says that the ip address i have used for the airport in the network tab is not valid inside the interval for ip addresses i have assigned. i have no idea what this means.
what can i do about this problem? at the very least i would like both computers to access the internet. in a best case, i would like them each to have 10.0.1.x ips. i don't know what to do and i haven't been able to find anything online that addresses this problem. please help me.
powerbook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   macbook os x 10.4.6

Should be simple to resolve. If your isp has assigned you a static ip address then in the Internet tab of the Snow config you should set:
Connect Using: Ethernet
Configure: Manually
IP address: <static ip as given to you by your ISP>
Subnet mask: <mask as defined by your isp>
Router address: <address as defined by your isp>
DNS servers: <address as defined by your isp>
I think from your posting this is what you have set.
Alternatively, if your isp assigned ip addresses dynamically then you should have set:
Configure: Using DHCP
and the Snow will contact the isp dhcp server to get the information required.
It is also _very important_ that you have the modem connected to the WAN port on the Snow rather than the LAN port.
Now the important bit...
In the Network tab you must have it set to
Distribute IP addresses: yes
Share a single ip address (using nat and dhcp)
Your two computers (which I understand are configured to use dhcp to get ip address, etc.) will then use dhcp to contact the dhcp server in the Snow and will be assigned addresses in the range shown in the Beginning/End boxes (which although greyed out are still applicable.) I guess these will be set to something like 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200 or similar? The two machines using the addresses from this range will be "hidden" behind NAT and as far as the outside world is concerned NAT let's them share the single ip address given to the Snow on the Internet tab.
BTW the Snow will have an ip address (on the Network side) of 10.0.1.1 (you should be able to "ping" it - start up a Terminal and enter "ping 10.0.1.1").
Things will not work if on the Network tab you select "Share a range of ip addresses (using only DHCP)" and you will get the kind of behaviour you are experiencing - similar issues if you have the modem connected to the LAN port.
Why so? Well, without NAT the Snow is effectively only a bridge between two network "segments" meaning that both your machines (and the Snow "controller" function, i.e., the thing that has ip address 10.0.1.1) are part of the isp network - bad karma, you do not want to have this happen.
Now, for whatever random reason one of your machines using dhcp is still getting the Snow dhcp server and so gets a 10.0.1.x address but the other machine is contacting another dhcp server on the isp network and so getting an ip address for that network (BTW it isn't necessarily coming from a router - not all routers are dhcp servers.) Because the machine getting the 80.x.x.x ip address is then effectively part of the isp network it will be able to browse, etc. However, the machine that gets the 10.0.1.x address, although being effectively connected to the isp network, will not work because it has an invalid address on that network.
The fact that they both show connected to the same Airport network is irrelevant from that point of view, that refers only to the wireless access, nothing else.
So, to reiterate, you must use NAT.
Actually you don't have to make use of the Snow dhcp server if you don't want to. Configure the set up as defined above but then you could assign static ip addresses to both your machines provides they are outside the dhcp range. For example, if the dhcp range is defined to be 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200 you could assign static ip addresses of 10.0.1.201 and 10.0.1.202 (set the mask to 255.255.255.0 and the router/dns-server to 10.0.1.1). Having static ip addresses makes it easier to setup connections between the two machines and also to use port-forwarding through NAT if yoou wanted to, say, run a web server on one of the machines or perhaps need some VPN setup.
Hope that helps.

I think that something is wrong with my new airport express. Can anyone help me to solve this problem?
ps sorry for my bad english

As a last resort, try a factory default reset on the AirPort Express as follows:
    Power off the AirPort Express
    Wait a minute
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for another 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status
On an iPhone or iPad home screen....
    Tap Settings
    Tap WiFi
Look for a heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station. If it appears.....
Tap on AirPort Express just below the heading to start the configuration process on the Express again
If you try several factory default resets, and the AirPort Express does not appear under the heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station, the Express most likely is defective and will need to be replaced.

Problems with Airport setup after buying Version 7 models, (older ones will not upgrade)
I re set up my Airport network , having had 4 expresses for years doing a good job. I bought another and an express, but then a time capsule after my external drive died. .Problems with Airport setup after buying Version 7 models, (older ones will not upgrade)
I moved house and have fibre network so 38mb/s - they all look ok on the utility, but its not till I saw the App version that they are not compatible as mac will not upgrade the version 6 ones, leaving me with 2 disjointed networks and 7 appliances, 4 of the old , 3 of the new.
my new house is expansive so i wanted the extended range and airplay in each room.
This is not told to customers, and utility doesnt show any issues.
I do not seem to get any range from either network now, - and I'm quite experienced with airport (6 yrs of setting up & using & extending)
    Any advice ?

    Michaelgfrommet

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,
    Melissa

  • An irritating problem with AirPort

    Hi,
I've read a few forums addressing this issue but none of the proposed solutions have worked for me.
I am currently running a MacBook Pro on Snow Leopard (10.6.4) and my internet connection has just died. I tried unplugging the router, turning on/off AirPort and rebooting, attempting to renew the DHCP lease, but the problem still remains - AirPort has self-assigned an IP address and I am unable to connect to the Internet.
Does anyone know of a solution to this problem? I would greatly appreciate your help.
    MANY, MANY THANKS.

OK, so I would check whether your computer works with your router when it is using the Ethernet connection, and I would check whether it works wirelessly at other wireless hotspot locations other than your home.
If this were my problem, that would guide me in deciding whether it is a hardware problem with the wireless or maybe a configuration problem such as MAC authentication in the router preventing affiliation or incompatible wireless protocols.
That new piece of information now confuses me about what exactly is your network topology. So are you running BootCamp on this computer and you can connect to the internet in the Windows boot camp partition but can't connect to the internet in the Apple partition? Or vice versa? Or none of the above? What is "excellent?" Full bars in the signal strength indicators? What computers/OSs are getting onto the internet for you, and what ones aren't?

  • Problem with airport express extending wifi from extreme

My setup is an airport extreme wired to the internet with two iMacs connected by wire and an airport express to extend wifi from the extreme to the further parts of my house.  When originally installed about a year ago this arrangement worked perfectly, but I noticed a few weeks ago that neither my iphone, ipad, nor my MBP 13" is connecting to the aitport express anymore and the network extension is not working as intended.
Last night I investigated the isue and found that the express is connected wirelessly to my extreme because when I wired my MBP to the express and turned off the wireless connection it could still reach the internet.  But, even with the express sitting plugged in next to my iPhone I could not get it to connect to the express - it always uses the extreme and while I'm in range there is no problem.  The problem is that my house is old and the wals tend to cause problems with reception and I can't get wifi in the garden and some parts of the house.
I have the express and the extreme configured to allow access only by the client macs that I have provided and it looks like the two devices share this information when they are in extend mode (but not sure about that).  When I set up the system I added the aitports mac addresses to the approved list in the access control screen, which seemed to be necessary then though I removed them (the airport mac addresses) fromt he list last night to see what effect this had and biefly the airport did connect to my MBP.  But after returning it to its location where it usually is I have not been able to reconnect to it.
In brief;  I have an airport express extending an airport extreme wifi, it used to work, but now all wifi clients will only connect to the master.  I have a suspicion that a recent airport update has caused this (both airports are up-to-date) but can't be sure.  I have the express correctly configured to extend the wifi of the extreme as it was originally working.
One thing I have noticed - I had the express set to use a fixed IP by setting 'static' in the internet screen - this is not the current setting (it's reverted to DHCP) and I cannot force it to update to and remain set to static.
Does anyone know how I can restore the correct functioning of the express as an extension of the wifi network?
    Thanks
    Damon

Perform the Factory Default Reset one more time. Hold the reset button until the amber light has been blinking rapidly for 8-10 seconds before you release the reset button
Run the setup wizard, and wait for screen similar to this to appear, then click on Other Options:
Select the Add to an existing network option, then click Next and follow the prompts.
If you are still having difficulty, try running the setup utility on an iPhone or iPad, since Yosemite has a number of bugs in the setup process.

  • Problems with AirPort Extreme and connecting to personal ftp

    Hi all
I seem to be having a problem with connecting to my personal server outside of my network. When I connect using a static IP within my network(192.168.1.x) I can connect fine using my Mac and PC so I've ruled out improper server settings. I've mapped a port (21) to the same static IP as my server, but I cannot connect. I am prompted with "An FTP Connection to "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection" I think I've toggled every option in the Airport Utility but nothing seems to work. Has anybody been successful in making this work?
    Thanks for any help offered

OK, thanks for the info, which really helps.
Your AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode, so the IP addresses that your devices need are being assigned by the Cradelpoint router, not the AirPort Extreme.
Either the Cradlepoint router is not allowing more than 3 devices to connect, or it is your service provider that is limiting the number of devices that can connect....probably because of very limited bandwidth.
I'm not sure whether you want to try to contact support at Cradlepoint or your service provider to try to find out who is actually responsible for the maximum number of connections allowed, since they will likely each blame the other for the problem.
The workaround...if you want to try it, since it bends networking rules a bit....is to configure the AirPort Extreme as a router, not a bridge.
The upside to this is that all of your devices will be able to connect and get a valid IP address.
One downside is that this will introduce what is known as a Double NAT error on the network, but that is rarely serious on a home network, and Apple does provide you with the option to "ignore" the error, so you get a nice green light on the AirPorts.
Another downside may be....depending on the bandwidth that your service provides....that your connection is really slow....as in dial up speed slow....when you have a number of devices all connected to the network simultaneously, since they will all share the available bandwidth is provided.
I never had any problems in the past with wireless connections when I configured the AirPort as the router. But I also was very careful to avoid downloading large files using the Cradlepoint connection since the bandwidth was quite limited.
Not sure how you want to proceed.
We can tell you how to configure the AirPort as the router in this type of setup if you will let us know what operating system you used to configure the AirPorts, but we cannot guarantee that things will work for you if you try it.

  • Macbook has Problems with Airport Express newtork

I am using an Airport Express at home. I have my 20" iMac (OS 10.4.11) connected to the network with no problems. When I try to access the network with my Macbook (OS 10.4.10) I have all kinds of problems: I often can not find the network, when I do get onto the I get really slow download speeds (~3 mins for a web page), after waking the Macbook from sleep it can not find the network unless I restart. I even have these problems when the Macbook is right next to the airport (< 1 m).
I don't believe it is a problem with the Airport because my iMac connects perfectly from about 4 m away through the floor.
I don't believe it is the Macbook per se because I can connect to any open network without problems.
It seems to be the odd combination of the Macbook with the Airport.
Does anyone have any suggestions for addressing this issue?
    Thanks in advance.

    Network
Plug the AE next to the PLC and connect it to the Ethernet port of the PLC.  Configure the AE to operate in bridge mode.  If your PLC doesn't offer an Ethernet port, use one like the Netgear XAVN2001.  If it's already taken, you will need a 4 port switch.  You will also need a long 3.5mm audio cable if the amp is not in the proximity of the PLC, available from Amazon for under $5.  Finally, create a separate wireless network on the AE.
    Client
Connect the client to the AE's wireless network, not your existing network.  The client in this case is an iPxd or other computer with iTunes or Airplay/similar PC.
The above basic configuration works flawlessly in my experience.  If the Client is to distant from the AE's wireless, you can, as a second step, connect it to your existing network, but be forewarned that in this scenario dropouts abound and the AE frequently disappears from view.

  • HP Color Laserjet 3600 Printing Problems with Airport Extreme & JetDirect

I have a HP Laserjet 3600n connected via ethernet cable to our Airport Extreme base station using the built-in JetDirect functionality of the printer. Prior to installing Snow Leopard we had no problems and every computer on the home network could see and print with full functionality on the printer.
After installing Snow Leopard, it took a while but I got the printer working again with the same setup. Then we had a power outage and the printer was no longer visible on the network or in the airport settings. Again it took a while but I once again got it to work. But now it seems like it keeps falling off the network and the printer itself either shows an IP address of 0.0.0.0 or another random one. The IP address should be generated by DHCP by the airport.
I don't know if this is a problem with Snow Leopard, the airport extreme, or the printer. The way I got it to work the last couple times no longer fixes the problem. Someone please help.

I don't know if this is related, but...
My MacBook Pro (Airport) has always been dicey connecting to an HP LaserJet 4000 on my wired LAN. Before Snow Leopard, I used AppleTalk rather than IP printing because it just worked.
But Snow Leopard doesn't support AppleTalk any more, so I reinstalled the printer to connect via JetDirect (which supposedly provides more features). When it works, it works fine. But very often I get a message that it can't connect to the printer. The only thing I've found that fixes the problem is power-cycling the printer, which somehow enables queued jobs to print. Needless to say, this gets old.
Is there some trick I'm missing?

  • Problems with AirPort and WPA access point

Okay, I have done quite a bit of research and I still cannot resolve my problem because of this, I am turning to this user community.
Here is what I know as of right now:
I am running Windows OS X 10.4.4 with AirPort Update 2005-001. My Access Point is a 3COM 8250.
The AP is setup not to broadcast its SSID, to use WPA-TKIP (or in Apple terminology, WPA Personal) and the password is set to use alphanumeric.
When I try to connect my PowerBook with the SSID name, WPA Personal and the correct password, I get the following error:
The password you entered is not correct for the Airport network *******.
To troubleshoot here are the test I have run and their outcomes:
    Test
    - Result
Set the AP to completely open
    - Connected
Set the AP to open, didn't broadcast the SSID
    - Connected
Set the AP to WEP, broadcast the SSID
    - Connected
Set the AP to WEP, didn't broadcast the SSID
    - Connected
Set the AP to WPA & WEP, broadcast the SSID
    - WEP : Connected
    - WPA : Not Connected
Set the AP to WPA & WEP, didn't broadcast SSID
    - WEP:Connected
    - WPA:Not Connected
Set the AP to WPA only
    - Not Connected.
Now, I should mention that when I was running 10.3.3 I could not connect either. The AP is running the newest firmware and I have three Windows XP SP2 laptops / workstations that can connect with no problems.
I have tried to find a compatibility matrix on both 3COM's and Apple's websites to see if it might be a compatibility issue but I have not been able to find one on either site.
Any help that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciate.
    Thanks in advance.

Hello MisssAsh. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It's always a good idea to do a complete power recycle when changing network configurations.
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, AirPort Express Base Station (AX), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AX, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."
