Problems calling LabVIEW VI through ActiveX inside another LabVIEW VI

Hi everybody,
basically I would like to create an ActiveX to be inserted in a LabVIEW VI which at its turn would call another LabVIEW VI.
I have choosen Visual Basic to create this ActiveX, being the main section code:
Dim lv As LabVIEW.Application
Dim vi As LabVIEW.VirtualInstrument
Dim names(0 To 1) As String, values(0 To 1) As Variant
'Assign an object reference to VI
Set lv = New LabVIEW.Application
'Assign an object reference to VI
Set vi = lv.GetVIReference(lv.ApplicationDirectory & "\Examples\General\Strings.llb\Parse Arithmetic Expression.vi")
vi.ShowFPOnCall = False 'Open front panel if requested
'Initialize the variables & define the strings corresponding to the VI connector labels.
names(0) = "Arithmetic Expression": values(0) = "1+1"
names(1) = "Result"
'Call the VI
vi.Call names, values
So, when this ActiveX executes this code sequence it locks when creating the "LabVIEW. Application" object. I have tested this ActiveX from another client application (Internet Explorer) and it works perfectly, so the problem is located in the creation of ActiveX from LabVIEW. Do I need to do anything special in my code or simple it cannot be done what I want to do?
Thanks !!!

Exactly, but really the code of above it's only an example that I want to do. I'm trying something more sophisticated.
I want to create an ActiveX control that could work as stand alone executation with the ability of directly get some indicator values from its LabVIEW VI container and depending of those values, set the control values of others LABVIEW VIs. I really know that within LabVIEW itself I can get/set those indicators/controls, but with this method I think that the diagram block of the LabVIEW VI container can be more simple.

  • Is it possible to call a VI that is inside a LabVIEW executable from a TestStand sequence?

    I have created a custom TestStand operator interface and have modified the default sequential process model to display a UUT information dialog that prompts for more information than just the UUT serial number.  This UUT information dialog is a LabVIEW VI.  To distribute the operator interface, I build it into an executable.  As part of the build process, I make a copy of the UUT information dialog VI (which is part of my operator interface project) and place it in the same folder as the executable.  I have then configured the sequential process model to call the dialog VI from this location.  It would be really nice if I could embed the UUT information dialog VI inside the operator interface executable so that I could distribute just an executable instead of an executable and separate VIs.  Is this possible?  In other words, is it possible to call a VI that is inside a LabVIEW executable from a TestStand sequence just like a standard LabVIEW VI call?

    Ryan,
    The dialog that you've created isn't being directly called by the OI at all and shouldn't need to be included in the same directory as the OI for distribution. Since you are modifying the PreUUT of the default process model, you will give the path to the VI in that step, create a deployment and then manually copy the VI to the directory referenced in the step. The VI is considered a support file for the process model and is not related to the OI at all.

  • How to call matlab function through activex and execute in labview?

    Hi,
    I have created a gui based application in matlab and I wish to use back d same gui and run it as is it in labview. Can it be done with activeX? if so, may I know how to do it?

    Play around with this a little.  This is an example program I found on the WEB...I don't have Matlab so I can't run it.

  • Help with calling a java application from inside another one

    Hello!
    I am having this problem which is getting on my nerves and dont know how to solve..
    I want to call from my java application, another java application. So i use the exec command. Then i want to read the output of this execution from my own application, (the "parent" process).
    But it doesn work properly. Something seems to happen and i dont get the whole output.
    The java program i want to call is created for running an application created with Matlab java builder.
    This program works when called from cmd, but seems not to work when called from inside a java application.
    The code of my java application is:
    Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process child;
    // The java class getmagic is a special kind of java file that uses classes that work in matlab. It uses a component (.jar) file that is created from matlab java builder. thats why it wants the -classpath and the rest options.
    //I hope you wont get messed up in here.
    String[] callAndArgs = {"java","-classpath",".;C:\\Program Files\\MATLAB\\R2006b\\toolbox\\javabuilder\\jar\\javabuilder.jar;..\\MagicDemoComp\\magicsquare\\distrib\\magicsquare.jar -Djava.library.path=C:\\Program Files\\MATLAB\\R2006b\\bin\\win32;","getmagic","4"};
    try{
    child = rt.exec(callAndArgs);
    InputStream is = child.getInputStream();
    InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(is);
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(isr);
    String line;
    while ((line = br.readLine()) != null)
    System.out.println(line);
    is.close();
    System.out.println(child.waitFor());
    System.out.println("Finished");
    }catch(IOException e) {
    System.err.println("IOException starting process!");
    }catch(InterruptedException e) {
    System.err.println("InterruptedException starting process!");
    The java program (getmagic) thats uses matlab gives the following output (after some time) when called in cmd with argument 4
    Magic square of order 4
    16 2 3 13
    5 11 10 8
    9 7 6 12
    4 14 15 1
    My program shown above only prints:
    Magic square of order 4
    1
    Finished.
    Do i do something wrong? How can i get the rest of the output???
    Thank you very much in advance,
    Stacey
    PS: I am sorry for the length of my post.

    Hello CaptainMorgan08, thanx for the instant reply.
    I tried, but no, i cant.
    Because i cannot include this java aplication that uses matlab into my application, cause 1) it needs special arguments in the compiler and during execution so it can be run and 2) it uses classes that java doesnt have. only the java-like matlab code.
    For example it uses:
    import com.mathworks.toolbox.javabuilder.*;
    import magicsquare.*; //the component which is made from matlab java builder.
    So i cannot compile it with my application!
    If you know of a way, please let me know!
    I know i might be missing something.. something that is obvious to you.. but i ve been working days=nights hardly no sleep..so you can excuse me if i say something foolish..

  • Calling a private function when inside another class?

    Can't help it but im curious how classes seem to be able to
    call private functions inside other classes. I'm mainly thinking
    about the addEventListener() here. When adding a listening function
    to a class, that function can be private, and yet it seems to be
    called magically somehow. Or maybe its all internal? I dunno.
    Anyone? :D

    Hi Kenchu1,
    You can grab a copy of the open source API here:
    http://www.baynewmedia.com/download/BNMAPI10.zip
    (feel free to drop by
    the main site for documentation as well :) ). The main class
    is the
    Events class, "broadcast" method. This method broadcasts
    events in a
    decoupled fashion, meaning that listeners can listen to
    messages that
    aren't bound to a specific sender. The AS3 version works in
    much the
    same way except that I still haven't fully fleshed out the
    cross-SWF
    communication that this version can do (broadcast across all
    movies on
    the same computer using LocalConnection).
    Basically, the broadcaster works like this:
    1. Add event listener and bind to function A (called from
    within the
    class so the reference is available)
    2. Event listener pushes this into the listener array. It was
    provided
    by the class so the reference is valid and is now a part of
    the events
    class as well.
    3. Broadcast runs through all associated events when it comes
    time to
    broadcast and calls the function by using the array
    reference:
    this.listeners[message].call(classInstance,someParameter);
    In other words, the class that adds the listener "allows"
    the event
    broadcaster to use the reference because it passes it out.
    You can do
    the same thing by calling:
    someOtherclass.functionRef=this.privateFunction
    someOtherClass is the class that will store the private
    reference,
    functionRef is some variable to hold the reference, and
    privateFunction
    is the private function. Then, in someOtherClass, you can
    call:
    this.fuctionRef(someParameter);
    Hope this helps.

  • Calling Microsoft word speech in LabVIEW through ActiveX

    hi
    Yesterday i had posted 1 question , how to get the output of some other programme in LabVIEW. Well. i have found out the answer. This can be done by using ActiveX. For this the programme also must be ActiveX enabled.
    I wanted to use the microsoft Word Speech in labVIEW through ActiveX.Since microsoft word is also ActiveX enabled, this can be called.
    But the question is HOW????????

  • Problems with ActiveX Callbacks in LabVIEW 7

    Have encountered an interesting problem with ActiveX "Reg Event Callback" in LV7 (WinXP):
    In a nutshell, when a lot of events fire in rapid succession, the user-interface locks up.
    The events still fire, and the front panel controls update, but the front panel will not respond to clicks. Interestingly, if the block diagram is open, you can stop it and turn on execution highlighting, etc...
    - I've discovered that the problem we're encountering is related to multiple events firing before the (reentrant) callback VI has finished executing from the 1st event.
    - by watching the Performance data in task manager, and tracking the # of handles used by LabVIEW, I find that when this happens, the # of handles increases, b
    ut never decreases until you stop the VI
    - I would expect several (nearly) instantaneous events to launch multiple copies of that callback VI, and I can believe that would increase the # handles, but I would expect that LabVIEW would catchup shortly thereafter and the # handles would return to its starting count.
    As an aside, using the old ActiveX event and callback method with the exact same version of the activeX control does not have this problem, events just queue up and then fire appropriately.
    Anyone seen anything like this?
    Anyone (NI guys) have any ideas?
    Follow up question (NI guys): when will the support for the old ActiveX event stuff dry up?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Ben,
    The error message warns about the use of three ActiveX Event VIs that will no longer be supported in future versions of Labview. Following version 6 of Labview, the use of ActiveX Event VIs is shifting to the use of Register Event Callback VI instead. In looking at your screenshots, I did not see any use of the older ActiveX Event VIs. If possible, try attaching the actual VI to the post and I will take a look at that.
    At least in terms of support, phone support currently exists for Labview 6 and 7. With the release of Labview 8, support for Labview 6 will slowly be phased out. In this case, phone support for the ActiveX Event VIs will no longer continue as they are no longer included in the versions of Labview for
    which phone support is provided. However, Discussion Forums and web-based resources would be your best venue of support for those features.
    I would strongly recommend that you migrate to replacing ActiveX Event VIs to using the Register Event Callback VI. The following is a KnowledgeBase article describing the transition of ActiveX in Labview:
    Migrating from the ActiveX Event VIs to Using the Register Event Callback Node
    Also, are you using the Automation Open/Close VIs? These two VIs will allow acquire/release informatio nof the ActiveX object. I have attached a couple example programs that are included in Labview to help demonstrate this concept.
    Hope this helps!

  • Can I Call method on one JVM from another through a dll?

    Let me explain.
    I have this java jar file that I can only have one instance of running at any given time. I'm using a shared data segment in a dll to store a bool indicating whether the program is already running or not. If it's already running, I have to not run the second instance and give focus to the current running instance.
    The jar file calls a native method "canInstantiate()" on a dll to see if there's already an app running. If there isn't, the env and obj are stored in the shared data segment of the dll and we return true. If there is already an instance of the program running, I want canInstantiate call a function on the current instance of the jar (like a callback) to tell it to request focus. It's not working. Can someone tell me if my code is right?

    Can I Call method on one JVM from another through a dll
    ...The rest of your question merely expands on your title.
    And the answer to that question is no.
    When you call a method you are executing a "thread of execution." A thread of execution exists only in a single process. It can not exist in another process.
    If the dll is doing some interesting things then you could call a method that sets a flag. Data can move between instances. But you would then have to have a thread in that different process monitoring that flag. And sharing data in a dll is not a normal process, so it would have to be coded appropriately.
    If all you want to do is set the current focus to the existing application, then that can be done with existing windows functionality. You don't need to do anything special in your dll. You can probably search these forums to find the exact code. If not there are countless examples in windows repositories (like MSDN) on how to do that.

  • Problem calling a LabVIEW VI from TestStand

    I'm am currently migrating my companies test scripts from TestStand 3.0 to TestStand 4.1.1 and VI's from LabVIEW 7.0 to LabVIEW 8.6.  I have re-saved all of the sequence files to the new version as well as performed the 'Mass Compile' operation on all of our custom VI's.  During the execution of one of the sequence files a call is made to a VI (through a LabVIEW library).  If I run this sequence file on a machine with the development software and have the Adapter for LabVIEW set to use the development system the VI executes as expected.  If I have the adapter set to use the Run-time engine (in this case 8.6, the same as the development version) I get an error:
    "LabVIEW:  The VI is not executable. Most likely the VI is broken or one of its subVIs cannot be located.  Open the VI in LabVIEW using File>>Open and verify that it is runnable."
    I noticed that in the library file there are sub VI's that are called from  "C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.0\vi.lib"   This directory only exists on machines that have the development system installed.  Perhaps this is why the VI does not execute using the runtime engine

    Ray is right. Development environments are backwards compatible (you can run VIs compiled in LabVIEW 7.1 or 8.5 in LabVIEW 8.6). That's why you can run your sequence just fine on the development system, but on the target machines you are using the LabVIEW Run-Time engine, which is not backwards compatible. With the Run-Time engine, ALL VIs need to be in the same version as the Run-Time engine (including VIs in vi.lib, tools.lib, instr.lib, etc.).
    The first thing I would check is make sure everything has been mass compiled to 8.6, including vi.lib. If you are still getting the error you should be able to tell at what point the error occurs so you can look at that specific VI. Open it and confirm there isn't a broken run arrow and check to see what subVIs that VI is using and confirm they all have been compiled in version 8.6 too.
    This should get you going, but if not just let us know.

  • Problem in reading an object inside another obj in C thru JNI

    Hi All,
    I am passing a java class object from Jave to C thru JNI.
    This object has many integer fields + one object of another class, which also has some fields.
    I am able to read integer fields from C but not able to read fields inside another object.
    Can anyone plz help me in reading the object inside another object from C.
    I m pasting class here for better understanding :
    public class ImageMergeInformation {
    public ImageInformation outputImageInfo;
    public ImageInformation[] inputImageInfo = new ImageInformation[8];
    public int topMargin;
    public int bottomMargin;
    I wanna read ImageInformation obj.
    Plz help me...
    Thanks in Advance,
    Regards,
    Sneha

    You have to get the field id (getFieldID) of the variable you want, e.g. outputImageInfo, then get the object (getObjectField) in that field. At this point, you can start over (get the class, get the field id, get the object).
