Problems Shutting MAc down
having trouble shuting down when computer is running with battery power only ... please help .. how can i fix this ... the screen turns blue and a spining wheel comes up... i have left it alone to this a how long it wouod take to shut down ( it not the clolorful beach ball)... the news is that the computer run out battery juice before it shut itself down ...
Insert your OS installer disk in the optical drive and when it appears on the desktop reboot while holding down the c key. In the meanwhile stop down to your local bookstore and get a couple of books on the Mac and Mac OS X. Look for books by David Pogue and/or "Mac For Dummies" and get a one year subscription to Macworld.

Seeking a way to shut mac down after backup -- and trying to save power!
This might take a while, but please bear with me...
I have a network of approx 10 macs which are backed up by EMC Retrospect. Under previous versions of retrospect which ran under system 9 and earlier, you could shut a mac down, it would go to sleep, then when the backup was finished it would sut the mac down. This no longer works on OS10.x so we have to leave all the macs on all night to ensure the backup is completed which is a terrible waste of power. So, my question is, is there some way -- a script perhaps -- to make a mac shut down after an event (eg. after Retrospect has backed up its contents) to prevent us having to run all the computers all night?
thanks
LukeIn Applescript, you can still shut down the computer, so there is no reason Retrospect could not run a script to shut down the Mac after completing. You might want to ask them why they dropped the capability.
You could write an applescript that starts Retrospect, and then periodically checks to see if it is still in the process list. If not, it calls System Events to shut down. You should probably post that question over in the [Applescript|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=724] forum. -
Connecting iPod shuts Mac down
Posted this elsewhere a few days ago without response - trying it here in not quite desperation:
Have had a 5th-gen iPod, 80 GB, for about six weeks. No problems until a week ago when, every time I tried to connect the iPod, the computer shut down. Display looked like a gray curtain falling down from the top of the screen and a box popped up advising that I would have to restart my computer. Here's what the beginning of the error message said (taken from the 'send to Apple' box that popped up after I restarted the computer):
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002476C4): BlockAllocateContig: allocation overflow on "Mark LeitnerbModel: PowerMac7,3, BootROM 5.2.4f1, 2 processors, PowerPC G5 (3.0), 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GB
The iPod works fine when connected to my car stereo, etc - I just can't connect it without crashing the Mac. I have reset it and tried a different USB connection without success. Would appreciate advice, assistance, whatever you can offer.
Thanks.Hi neon,
Have you tried either booting from your Tiger DVD and running Disk Utility to both "repair disk" and "repair permissions on the Mac HD, or booting from the internal drive in "safe mode"? The "allocation overflow" error looks like some serious disc corruption to me. This might also occur if the HD is very full. Always aim to keep several gigabytes free, espcially on a boot disk. ( Something like this sounds like the most likely cause of the problem.)
If not:
Have you been able to connect other USB devices to the same port without problems?
Are there ANY other USB devices attached to the computer other than the iPod, and an Apple branded keyboard and mouse? If so, have you tried it with them removed?
Does the crash occur if the iPod is not turned on at the time of connection?
Are you running the current version of iTunes?
Is there plenty of free space still on the iPod?
(Apologies for all the Q's)
Cheers

I am wondering if your hard drive is failing? You might try downloading and running SMART Utility on it:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It is somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may give you earlier warning of impending drive failure.
You might also want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test and see if you get any error codes.
From the way your hard drive is behaving, it sounds to me like there is something wrong with it. Since reinstalling the OS doesn't solve anything, you are likely dealing with some sort of a hardware issue.
Good luck! -

Mac book pro stops responding after Maverick OS restart. Currently have a circle with a line through it after 20+ hours. Tried to shut it down and use the Time Machine to restore but no response. How can I restore with Time Machine if it will not start?
sonjadg,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine. -
Why does my Power MAC G4 keep restarting itself after I shut it down?
Hi,
Thanks for reading this.
Why does my Power MAC G4 keep restarting itself after I shut it down?
This JUST started happening only 4 days ago.
Most recent installation was Limewire, but I removed it to see if this problem would go away.
I have 3 internal drives (See drive types below) that all have OS 10 on them in order to be able to boot up from either drive in the event of trouble.
However...
No matter WHICH drive I use as the start up drive... the computer STILL restarts itself after it is properly commanded to shut down.
Prior to the Limewire install... the ADOBE creative suite was installed.
There is a Lexmark X83 printer hooked to the computer, which, it seems doesn't matter if it is left on or off... the computer still restarts itself.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

If you still have problems, trash the following three preference files, then shut down and do a PMU reset. (PMU reset procedure for the QS is the same as is shown at the link for the Gigabit Ethernet.)
HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

Problems shutting down after installing 10.5.3 update?
Has anyone had any problems shutting down there IMac's after installing 10.5.3 update? I've tried shutting down twice and the image that appears when shutting down seems to go in an endless loop an doesn't shut down.
Can you restart from the menu and hold the shift key down, until the Mac
boots in a SafeBoot login screen; then choose Disk Utility (shortcut under
GO in Finder window, to Utilities folder) and run 'repair disk permissions'
then restart the computer normally...(?)
You may also have to consider starting the computer from the OS X
installer disc and choose from an option menu there (not to install)
and choose to use Disk Utility from the booted installer disc, to run
'repair disk' from there? You could also run 'repair disk permissions'
while booted from that installer disc, but maybe you'd still have to
repair those from the running system for best effect once it is back
running from the hard drive's system.
Some minor issues can happen after an update, usually just repairing
disk permissions before installing the update, and/or running up in
SafeBoot, can help. There are other things to try and do, if these don't
help that much. The state of the system prior to an update is important;
since an update can't fix anything otherwise non-related to an update.
Maintenance issues aside, after you repair disk permissions, safeboot,
and restart, if there still is an issue, you could try to download the Combo
OSX 10.5.3 update file and install it over your system; and then repair
disk permissions again after it finally restarts normally.
Was the 10.5.3 update a smaller (delta) file or was it the Combo (large) file?
Good luck & happy computing! -
Hello, my mac book air won't update. Every time i try it goes onto the purple starry screen and stays that way for hours, so i just have to shut it down. I have deleted a lot on my laptop so there is enough space, please help?
I believe that system has a hall sensor on it to detect when the lid is closed so it can put the system to sleep and/or disable the monitor so it can be used with an external monitor only. If the sensor is marginal or has a bad cable, it may intermittently cut the monitor on and off, and may likewise put the system to sleep. One way to check would be to plug in an external monitor and if the laptop's screen cuts off or doesn't show up, start using the trackpad and press on a non-typing key like the shift key. If the external display suddenly pops and becomes active while the laptop display remains black, it's probably a problem with the sensor or the cable/connection. You might be able to fool the sensor into kicking on and off by moving a magnet over it. It's located on the left had side of the base with the unit opened up, and right over the audio output plug.
I know of some people that put a small magnet right over the hall sensor's location so the laptop display turns off and they use the system with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. If fooling with magnets, make sure they're small and don't get them close to the hard drive because a strong magnet can wipe them out.
I don't know if this will help you much, but it might. -
I am having problems shutting down my MacBook Pro. I go to the apple and click shutdown or restart, it appears the shutdown process starts, the screen goes blue and the little circle keeps going round and round, but nothing happens even after 30 minutes.
Make sure you quit all your applications before shutting down.
And try resetting the SMC.

Mac shuts itself down during sleep.
When the Mac goes to sleep, it shuts itself down instead. This occurs when the machine goes to sleep automatically after a period of inactivity, and also occurs if sleep is selected from the Apple menu. Shutdown occurs immediately upon sleep, or sometimes after being asleep for a while.
When the Mac is restarted, no error message appears (the one which says that power was lost unexpectedly, and prompts you to run disk first aid).
The problem occus on most occasions that sleep mode is activated, but not every time.
Any help towards fixing this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks.
PowerMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6) mirrored doorsI'm having almost the same problem and I can't figure it out either. I put my computer to sleep and when I wake it up, the screen comes on with my full desktop, but everything is frozen. I can't open anything. I can't even force quit. I get no response from my mouse (other than being able to move it around- sometimes) and everything on the dock is unresponsive. I did disc repair– no problems reported. I repaired disc permissions– a few glitches, but all taken care of and okay. I restarted the computer, put it to sleep and same thing all over. Should I worry?

Mail runs fine at first but after awhile it freezes the machine. I have shut the mac down and restart. I am running Mountain Lion which was updated from Leopard. I reinstalled original programs from disk and solved this same problem with Contact. Mail is still a problem. May also include itunes which seems to add to the problem.
Run Disk Utility to check the SMART status of your hard drive.

Macs running OS X Tiger 10.4.4 keep shutting themselves down!
We have a no. of macs connected to an OS X Tiger server and at the same time everyday, one by one the macs drop off the network and then shut themselves down! It's exactly 5 minute intervals between each mac. Has anyone had any shut down problems with Tiger. There are macs with OS 9 installed, and they do the same thing. The macs run fine during the day and it starts happening between 5.30pm and 6.00pm. Surely if there was a power problem all the macs would shut down immediately. The software settings have been checked and they are not congfigured to shut down at a certain time. The server has no configuration to shutdown nor control the clients. We are stumped! Help please anyone?
Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo Mac, follow the Core Duo instructions and then buy a download code for Lion from the online Apple Store.

In the evening when I put my mac air to sleep and turn it on in the morning it says it had a problem shutting down and had to restart again, so all my work is gone, and this is happening quite often now and I bought it in January. So shouldn't I use the sleep mode over night is that too long and causes it to crash? Or should I take it to a apple store for them to check it out?
Overnight isn't too long for sleep mode. I do it all of the time with no problem. However, I save everything first so I would not have the "all my work is gone" issue even if there was a problem. I would have it checked out.
