Problems starting X and gnome (Solved)

I have just installed Arch, and installed and configured xorg as is says in the wiki, X worked with twm, so I installed gnome and gnome-extra also with the Gnome wiki, then , when using the gnome-session command to open gnome it gives me the following error message:
"Gtk-WARNING **: Cannot open display:"
So I configured the ~/.xinitrc file and added the exec gnome-session line to make gnome the default, restarted and when using the startx command it gives me this message:
"(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/mouse No such file or directory
(EE)Mouse1: Cannot open input device
(EE)PreInit failed for input device  "Mouse1"
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
>Warning:   Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols
>       Ignoring extra symbols
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X erver
No core pointer
Fatal Server Error:
failed to initialize core devices
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining."
And nothing happens, im still in the command line, can anyone help me out?

If you've recently updated udev, then yes, I'm pretty sure you need to update the kernel alongside it - there are patches in the newer kernels that work with udev.

  • No TV sound - Problem with Pulseaudio and Gnome

    Hi Community!
Since January 2013 I got big problems with the sound of my tvcard. The card is a Sundtek Media TV Pro. But after all the problems have nothing to to with the card itself!
So far I found out, that the problem is with Pulseaudio.
    - Sound works under Windows on same PC.
    - Sound don't work under Arch - not with tvtime, not with vlc, etc.
    - Problem occurs even on a new installed system with the Arch-2013-02-01 install medium.
    cat /etc/mediasrv.log
[1033] Pulseaudio connect reported an error (6 - Connection refused)
[1033] select error() in audio processor (can be caused because of pulseaudio) (Interrupted system call)
After setting up a new Arch installation with just xorg-server, gnome, tvtime and the sundtek driver from AUR I run journalctl -b:
    Feb 10 16:25:15 hightower pulseaudio[636]: [pulseaudio] pid.c:
    Daemon already running.
With sudo journalctl | grep 'Feb 10 16:2' I get the following output:
Feb 10 16:25:01 hightower rtkit-daemon[489]: Successfully made thread 488 of process 488 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio) owned by '120' high priority at nice level -11.

Feb 10 16:28:55 hightower pulseaudio[997]: [pulseaudio] main.c: Start des Daemons fehlgeschlagen.
So, if I understand right, pulseaudio is alreade started by the rtkit-daemon and gnome couldn't start it again.
    At https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30926 I found a hint concerning /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop and /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio-kde.desktop.
After removing them from /etc/xdg/autostart and running journalctl -b there are no more errors.
With sudo journalctl | grep 'pulseaudio' I get:
sudo journalctl | grep 'Feb 10 17:4' | grep 'pulse*'
Feb 10 17:41:42 hightower rtkit-daemon[485]: Successfully made thread 484 of process 484 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio) owned by '120' high priority at nice level -11.

In my opinion all looks ok! I also checked the channels with the alsamixer and it looks good, too.
So I ran vlc v4l2://:dev=/dev/video0:width=720:height=576:tuner-frequency=510750:adev=/dev/null:standard=255 - but still no sound.
With cat /var/log/mediasrv.log I checked the drivers logfile:

    2013-02-10 17:48:59 [1033] Pulseaudio connect reported an error (6 - Connection refused)
I started tvtime again. This time I ran rm -rf ~/.config/pulse/ and killall pulseaudio to kill the Pulseaudio server. I instantly got a loud noise out of my speakers.
I closed tvtime and re-opened it. And there it was: TV SOUND OUT OF MY SPEAKERS!
But now, when I run pavucontrol I get:
Connection to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s.
In this cas this is likely because PULSE_SERVER in the Environment/X11 root Windows Properties or default-server in client.conf is misconfigured.
This situation can also arrise when PulseAudio crashed and left stale details in the X11 Root Windows.
If this is the case, then PuseAudio should autospawn again, or if this is not configured you sould run start-pulseaudio-x11 manually.
I got the information from Sundtek, that Pulseaudio should not be started as system service. Instead, every user should have an own Pulseaudio daemon and that PA was concepted this way. But they don't know how it is implemented in ArchLinux.
I also don't know it exactly. So the question to all you ArchLinu pro's:
How is PA implemented in Arch? And how can I sustainable solve my problem?
Thank you for your time and help!

There is just one more thing I found out.
After logging into Gnome and running ps aux | grep pulse I get:

To get the sound to work I run:
    rm -rf .config/pulse/
    killall pulseaudio
    killall -9 pulseaudio
I again run ps aux | grep pulse
    rebel 4016 4.2 0.2 510124 11528 ? Sl 03:06 0:02 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog

    rebel 4046 0.0 0.0 19456 1216 pts/0 R+ 03:07 0:00 grep pulse
I can recognize that the STATs have changed. Maybe this can help to solve the problem?

  • Problems starting PE8 - and the answer to my problem!

    Hi Everyone,
The other day, I was having a problem starting PE8... When I started PE8 from the desktop icon, the Welcome Screen would appear, but the buttons which would normally allow a person to: Open a Project, Create A Project, etc., were all shaded out and could not be clicked. In fact the only thing I could do was to Take a Tour!   After taking the tour, I was able to click on a GO button, which then took me into Organizer, rather than into Premiere Elements. Clearly, something was wrong. I completely uninstalled PE8 and removed all instances of PE8 from my Program Files x86 directory. Yet, when I reinstalled PE8, the sympton persisted.
Here's the answer to the problem I was experiencing:
After trying to start PE8, over and over, many times, I noticed that right before the Welcome screen began to appear, there was a small (2" X 3") dialog box that said that I did not have any available memory. How could that be?! I have 12GB of memory on my computer! Hmmmm. Wait a minute! I remember that as I entered PE8 in the past, at the bottom of the Welcome Screen, it said that I had/have 2GB of memory for storage available.   So, as I went in to the shaded out Welcome Screen again, I looked at the little bar graph which shows how much storage memory one has available from Photoshop.com.  My bar graph was maxed out!   I then went to photoshop.com (which I have never used at all!) and I logged in with the same login that I used when I registered PE8.  Much to my surprise, someone else's pictures had been dumped into my account/storage on Photoshop.com. I then deleted ALL the pictures that were on my photoshop.com account.  I also changed my login & password.  I logged out of photoshop.com and then (as I had done many times previously) attempted to open up Premiere Elements 8 and IT OPENED AND STARTED PERFECTLY.
The moral to this story is that:   If you, or (as in my case) someone else maxes out your photoshop.com storage, you won't be able to get into Premier Elements until you either obtain more storage from Adobe, or until you delete things that you have in that storage area.   Note that when you install and register PE8, a Photoshop.com account and gallery area are created for you.   If that account/gallery is ever filled to it's initial 2GB capacity, you won't be able to start PE8 properly.   Likewise, if you can't start/open PE8 normally, then go to photoshop.com, log in, and check to see how much memory has been used on your photoshop account.
Last, but not least, know that the memory problem (not having any more Storage Memory available) is NOT a problem on YOUR computer. Rather, it is referring to the amount of Memory/Storage that Adobe gives you for free on THEIR computer.
    Best Regards,
    Kent

Hmmm. They would have to have the same login and password,  which is highly unlikely. Nevertheless, while my login (email address) remains the same, I now have a new password.   I figured that you would find my 'solution' interesting.    I never would have thought the problem was with the photoshop.com account which I had never used.   But, as we all know, the moment we assume anything, Murphy's Law kicks in and fools us!   Thanks again for all your help.  Kent

  • Problem starting OpenOffice with KDE [Solved]

I just did a clean Arch install witk KDE desktop. After I installed OpenOffice with
    pacman -Sy openoffice-base
when I try to start openoffice I get the following error message
"The application cannot be started. An internal error occurred."
I tried to reinstall OpenOffice but that didn't help.
Any ideas whats going wrong? OpenOffice worked fine with Gnome before I did a clean install.
    -A-

this problem is caused as some files on the install or somewhere else got assigned root permissions so that is the problem. i deleted the folder and everything recreated ok.
I have the same problem, but deleting ~/.openoffice.org2 haven't solved the problem, so I looked up this forum for other solutions and nothing helped.
From other topic: That's not a java problem, I think.
    Any ideas?

    I found a solution in this post. Just added this line "a1:2345:wait:/sbin/agetty -a USERNAME -8 -s 38400 tty1 linux" before "c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 -s 38400 tty1 linux" to my inittab.

  • Laserjet 1018 paper feed problem - started suddenly and now wrinkles paper but does not feed it in

This HP Laserjet 1018 is 4 years old, has worked flawlessly.  But a day or two ago it fed a sheet of paper, there was a ripping sound, and the paper emerged, printed, but with a 1/4" wide, 5" long missing bit near the bottom, running the long way of the paper.  I found and removed the crinkled up torn strip of paper, and have restarted this printer numerous times.  Since that incident, it refuses to feed paper correctly, but bunches it up and wrinkles it a bit from the left to right and does not feed it in.  Thus, won't work.  I can't see any broken parts or anything stuck inside -- and taking this printer apart is v. complicated -- no easy panel to remove to see the feed mechanism.   I'm doubtful I can take it apart enough, and still get it back together.  I've cleaned the feed roller (small half-round gray rubber thing) and it does not seem to be the problem.
    Questions:
    a) anyone experienced, and solved this problem?
    b) is it worth trying to send this for repair (I got it on special for $69, and the replacement equivalent now appears to be the HP P1102w, which is selling via Amazon for $94.99
    Thanks

  • MSI P45 Neo-F: Computer having problem starting up, and crushes frequently

    Hello,
    I have the following rig:
    Pentium Dual Core E5200
    MSI P45 Neo-F
    2x2GB Kingston DDR2 RAM
    Seasonic 500W SS-500ET
The problem is that when i start the comp, i won't start up (the computer gets power, and the fans\hd are spinning, but nothing show up and no beeps).
I have to do several resets and wait for a few minutes in order for it to start. I get a few bsods, resets, and finally, the windows is up.
When I work in windows, I get freezes and BSODs from time to time.
    I tried to:
    -disconnect all drives
    -disconnect all USB peripherals
-disconnect TV tuner and Sound Card
-disconnect every other memory slot, one for each time
-ran Memtest86 - the memory came out fine
-ran Intel burn test - which failed
    -ran furmark - passed ok.
    -changed the PSU.
-the CPU's temratures are fine (around ~35 c)
I think the problem is in the MB, as this behavior is not common for CPU failure. The comp crushed randomly, not when it is loaded.
    Can somebody comfirm it?
    What can I do?
    Thank you in advance!!

  • Network bridge problems linking wwan0 and eth0 [SOLVED]

    Hi There,
I have just got working a 3G modem which appears as device wwan0. I am trying to link this interface to my wired ethernet eth0.
wwan0 seems to work fine with network manager, getting a IP address via dhcp works just fine and I can use the interface.
However, when I disable network manager and try to bring up the bridge with "netcfg up bridge" it times out, failing to get an lease with dhcp.
My /etc/network.d/bridge file contains the following:
    INTERFACE="br0"
    CONNECTION="bridge"
    DESCRIPTION="Bridge wired and wireless connection"
    BRIDGE_INTERFACES="eth0 wwan0"
    IP="dhcp"
    #FWD_DELAY=10
As per the wiki, I have tried using various values for FWD_DELAY (i.e 10 7 5,4,3,2,1,0) but nothing ..
The relevant sections of /etc/rc.conf are:
    NETWORKS=(bridge)
    DAEMONS=( ... net-profiles !networkmanager ...)
It seems that DHCP via networkmanager is the only way the interface gets an IP. I even tried "dhcpd br0" or "dhcpd wwan0" and they both time out.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi,
Ok I have this working now, here are the steps I used.
    1. Allowed NetworkManager to setup the 3G Interface wwan0 with DHCP ..
    2. Disabled my eth0 interface from Networkmanager by putting an entry in /etc/Networkmanager/Networkmanager.conf
    3. Manually configured eth0 with a static IP of 192.168.0.1
    4. did the "echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward" thing for IP forwarding
    5. did the following with iptables:
    iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o wwan0 -j MASQUERADE
    rc.d save iptables
    rc.d start iptables
    6. Connected my wireless router "wan" port to eth0 and configured for 192.168.0.2 IP address and DNS servers dished up from the network  ..
( .. looked at the entries in /etc/resolve.conf on the PC I am sharing the internet )
I can then connect to my wireless lan with my other computers..and on to the internet ... yahoo .. :-)
The only issue I have with this setup is getting the 3G interface to connect automatically to the network .. I ticked the box in networkmanager, but it doesn't seem to work
if I reboot the PC or take the usb T stick out and plug back in, I have to manually connect to the network with networkmanager. Does anyone know how to do this automatically ..
[edit] seems this is a known bug ... you can only auto connect when the interface power is set to "on", but stupidly it defaults to "off"
    Thanks,
    B.

  • [SOLVED] Problem with GDM and Gnome3

Okay, the Topic was more of a trick. Actually I'm havingt two seperate issues; I googled and such, but have not found anything that really answers my question.
    First Issue:
I have my gdm.service enabled, so it starts on statup. I boot into runlevel 3. Now, whenever I type "startx" the screen becomes black, and after a while I come back into my TTY with something along the lines of "Stopping X server". But without any error, etc. It justs stops. When I know do a systemctl status on my gdm.service, I become that:
    gdm.service - GNOME Display Manager
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/gdm.service; enabled)
    Active: inactive (dead)
Feb 03 16:47:31 thunderlaptop gdm-simple-slave[475]: WARNING: Failed to give slave programs access to the display. Trying to proceed.

Feb 03 17:03:18 thunderlaptop systemd[1]: Stopped GNOME Display Manager.
After I start it, it puts me into the login screen and I can work just fine with Gnome3. I have no clue where the issuse might be.
The second is simple to explain - I have no Network symbol in the upper right corner, and Gnome3 says the network service is not compatible with my system.
Oh, and another issue. When I type something too long, the text does not start a new line in my console resulting in some Visual problems.
    Thanks in advance.

Isn't GDM starting X and Gnome as it should for you? You shouldn't need to start X unless you want more than one X session. Is that what you are trying to do? After installing Gnome and Gnome-extra, I just use this command to enable GDM. systemctl enable gdm
What is your networking configuration. The beginners guide has been updated within the last week or two about this due to a change in network interface naming. Please give that a look.
Which console and shell are you using? Does it have a line wrap configuration option. This is normally automatic but those are my first questions.
Well, as I said, I start into runlevel 3 and want to start X by myself.
Yes, I realise that it is not wlan0 anymore, and I know the name of my wlan-interface. It works awesomely fine via wifi-menu <interface>, but gnome3 seems to have struggles? Have not found anything about that.
I'm using the gnome shell with bash. But the problem occours in a tty2 console as well. I guess it is a problem with .bashrc, but I have no idea what it might be.

    1. Reinstall Linux. My Pam was fucked up somewhoe.
    2. systemctl enable NetworkManager and not networkmanager. Please kill me.
    3. I wrote the Colorcodes and escape-characters in a variable and used that in the actual PS1. That fixed it, and the guys over at bash suggest that too.

  • Wierd problem starting gnome

Ok i have a slightly wierd problem. I wanted to install gnome 2.1 but i have no interent connection so i downloaded all the gnome related packages & their dependancies and installed them. I dont know exactly everything i installed but among others i installed the following and their dependancies:
    gnome-applets
    gnome-audio
    gnome-backgrounds
    gnome-blog
    gnome-common
    gnome-desktop
    gnome-icon-theme
    gnome-keyring
    gnome-menus
    gnome-panel
    gnome-session
    gnome-terminal
    gnome-utils
    gnome-vfs
    gnome-volume-manager
I removed the exec entries for wmaker etc from the bottom of xinitrc files in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and /etc/skel/xinitrc and put in exec gnome-session. - I wasnt sure which was the default xinirc file.
The problem is that gnome does kindof start but i get some kind of a mutation between what you get from starting xinit and gnome. Basically the gnome desktop and panels start in little windows which is no good.
Is it that theres something i need to install and havent or something i need to uninstall to allow gnome to work properly or what am i doing wrong?
    Cheers
Btw is any way to post a screenshot?

There i no .xinitrc in the home directory by default, X defaults to one of the two i mentioned above - i didnt want to complicate things by putting one in my home directory.
Edit: Thanks though - i could have missed it.
Either way i finally go pacman to do pacman -S gnome and that fixed it. Must have been missing some package.
I get a proper gnome enviornment now but the terminal doesnt work and neither does nautilus. Trying to open the file manager crashes it removing icons from the desktop and the context menu.
Is this a common problem? Im thinking i might reinstall the whole thing because ive spent so much time messing around with it, bound to have broken something . . .

  • JDS and Gnome start, but all applications become fixed in upper left hand

    Problem:
Java Desktop and Gnome start, but all applications are fixed in the upper left hand corner and become stacked on top of each other.
Multi-panel JDS does not start up, and I am forced into one window, which makes the above problem critical.
Conditions: New installation (not an upgrade) I experienced this problem. Attempted to connect from SGD. Using the following command
    /usr/dt/config/Xsession.jds
    Environment Variable: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/openwin/lib:/usr/dt/lib
    ERROR MESSAGE:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.
    The last error message was:
Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

After Problem Encountered I did the following:
Insured all X, DT, and OPENWIN bins were in my path.
    Cleaned out the /var/tmp directory
Cleared out the user directory except for the .dtprofile with the Sessionlog commented out, and the .profile.
Rebooted the united and tried again.
All .dt and JDS .directories are rebuilt, and the welcome to JDS comes up.
The following is from the log files located in the .dt directory.

Anyone have any idea of what this problem could be,

Your main problem is that the JDS window manager (metacity) isn't starting up, because it thinks there is already another window manager running on that display:
    >
Window manager warning: Screen 0 on display "10.70.10.21:11.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager.
    >
I obviously don't know if there really is or not (I'm guessing not, if all the windows are stuck in the top left of the screen), but running "metacity --replace &" in a terminal should force it to start up.
The gnome-settings-daemon warning is annoying, but non-fatal. It will usually just cause some icons and fonts to look incorrect. You can try running "/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon" again manually in a terminal, which will sometimes clear it up straight away. If not, I see you attempted to clean up some things in the home directory manually, but running "/usr/bin/gnome-cleanup" in a terminal (while not logged into JDS) might be a better thing to try.

    Hi,
Problem starting DB and not able to use sqlplus is two different thing.
Assuming you have right now problem using sqlplus.
Please check if your Environment variable like %PATH, %ORACLE_HOME is properly set. I suppose you have more than 1 oracle installed on that box.
