ProcessBuilder-command arguments that contain speech marks.

I'm using Java's ProcessBuilder to call a program. However I am having trouble when one of the command arguments contains speech marks. I've tried using escape characters in the usual way, but this doesn't seem to work.
For example this works as expected: Process p = new ProcessBuilder("programX","arg1","arg2").start();
However when arg2 needs to be surrounded by quotations for programX to understand it then this following line of code doesn't work
Process p = new ProcessBuilder("programX","arg1","\"arg2\"").start();
Any suggestions on how to solve this problem would be great
Cheers

Hi
Thanks for the replies.
The code compiles fine. It's a runtime error that complains about a file not existing. The file that doesn't exist is the one that should have been created from the output of the external program. So for some reason the external program is not running as expected.
It's the single program argument with the surrounding speech marks that causes an error, since when this argument is not used the external program runs fine and the file is created. I also use the command p.waitFor() to make sure that the process has finished running before the next block of code is executed. I am sure that the speech mark syntax is correct for the external program, since it works fine when run directly from the command line in this way. So it is definitely not the external program that has the error, but something is going wrong with the ProcessBuilder call and how I am using it.
Any further suggestion are much appreciated
Cheers
Linda

    That's all what i see in catalina.out.
    By the way, we are using Cisco CSS (Content Switch) for Load Balancing
    process.
    Behind CSS, there is apache server and application server installed on two
    servers which mentioned in this page
    http://confluence.sakaiproject.org/confluence/display/DOC/Sakai+2.4+Admin+Guide+-LoadBalancing+and+Scaling
    http://confluence.sakaiproject.org/confluence/display/DOC/Sakai+2.4+Admin+Guide+-LoadBalancing+and+Scaling
    as thin client .
    CSS DNS address = sucourse.sabanciuniv.edu
    App server DNS address = sakws1.sabanciuniv.edu and sakws2.sabanciuniv.edu
    It is enough to type sucourse.sabanciuniv.edu address in web browser.
    Their sakai.properties files are similar. However, there are following
    parameters that i didn't use in my sakai.properties file. May be i should
    use them. !!

    Now, i have changed my connection type by connecting Campus VPN server with
    Checkpoint VPN client, i got my sakai course pages correctly via sakai
    portlet. However, in campus i had same problem today.
    So, like i said, the situation is changing due to unknown reason.
    From portlet, i clicked on any course, i get blank screen with followingaddress in web browser address bar.

    That's all.
    Thank you for your response Charles !

    The command that seems to be causing problems for Exchange is this one:
    A4 APPEND "Sakai-Dev List" (\Deleted \Seen NonJunk) "21-Aug-2007 16:37:20 -0400" {7024+}
    As far as I can see, there's nothing wrong with the syntax of that command.
    My first guess is that Exchange is unhappy with the flags. Possibly
    it refuses to append a message with the \Deleted flag set. If you're
    willing to modify the flags in the source mailbox, I would try turning
    off the DELETED flag. Or, try not copying deleted messages.
    If that doesn't work, the next thing to try is to get rid of all of the
    flags. You might want to copy the message into a local copy
    in order to lose all the flags from the original.

  • Adding speech marks into a string

    Hi!
    Is there a way to have speech marks displayed/present in a string? For
    example, if i wanted to write a line to a file which was enclosed in speech marks ("random gibberish") not only were the characters in the ring displayed, but the speech marks were too. I'm attempting to write a piece of code that will generate a HTML file for me, with some given parameters. Some of the values for the parameters contain more than a single word, so i need to encase them in speech marks in order to extract them later.
    Thanks in advance for any help, and on any time spent answering the question
    Zidane

    Do you mean
    String s = "\"Hello\"";

  • When I execute my code that contains SetCtrlVal, I get the following error:

    When I execute my code that contains SetCtrlVal, I get the following error:
    “Invalid argument type found double expected int.”   The variable in question is declared double, and from reading the help info, the variable should adapt to the declared type.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    A typical reason for this error is using a wrong panel handle in SetCtrlVal: check that the handle passed to the function effectively is the one returned from LoadPanel or NewPanel function.
    Another common issue it trying to address a control on a tab page using the handle of the panel that holds the tab control: you must consider that each tab page has its own panel handle as it were a separate panel; you can retrieve the handle associated with tab pages with GetPanelhandleFromTabPage () command.

  • How can I list all folders that contain files with a specific file extension? I want a list that shows the parent folders of all files with a .nef extension.

    not the total path to the folder containing the files but rather just a parent folder one level up of the files.
    So file.nef that's in folder 1 that's in folder 2 that's in folder 3... I just want to list folder 1, not 2 or 3 (unless they contain files themselves in their level)

    find $HOME -iname '*.nef' 2>/dev/null | awk -F '/'   'seen[$(NF-1)]++ == 0 { print $(NF-1) }'
    This will print just one occurrence of directory
    The 'find' command files ALL *.nef files under your home directory (aka Folder)
    The 2>/dev/null throws away any error messages from things like "permissions denied" on a protected file or directory
    The 'awk' command extracts the parent directory and keeps track of whether it has displayed that directory before
    -F '/' tells awk to split fields using the / character
    NF is an awk variable that contains the number of fields in the current record
    NF-1 specifies the parent directory field, as in the last field is the file name and minus one if the parent directory
    $(NF-1) extracts the parent directory
    seen[] is a context addressable array variable (I choose the name 'seen'). That means I can use text strings as lookup keys.  The array is dynamic, so the first time I reference an element, if it doesn't exist, it is created with a nul value.
    seen[$(NF-1)] accesses the array element associated with the parent directory.
    seen[$(NF-1)]++ The ++ increments the element stored in the array associated with the parent directory key AFTER the value has been fetched for processing.  That is to say the original value is preserved (short term) and the value in the array is incremented by 1 for the next time it is accessed.
    the == 0 compares the fetched value (which occurred before it was incremented) against 0.  The first time a unique parent directory is used to access the array, a new element will be created and its value will be returned as 0 for the seen[$(NF-1)] == 0 comparison.
    On the first usage of a unique parent directory the comparison will be TRUE, so the { print $(NF-1) } action will be performed.
    After the first use of a unique parent directory name, the seen[$(NF-1)] access will return a value greater than 0, so the comparison will be FALSE and thus the { print $(NF-1)] } action will NOT be performed.
    Thus we get just one unique parent directory name no matter how many *.nef files are found.  Of course you get only one unique name, even if there are several same named sub-directories but in different paths
    You could put this into an Automator workflow using the "Run Shell Script" actions.

  • Apply conditional formatting for a textbox in a matrix that contains an expression

    I have a matrix that contains one row, and one of the columns in this row (a field ) contains an expression. I know this field is "Textbox24" but anyway, I have created a placeholder for this field and in Placeholder Properties I have given the
    label "PD". Note that the Value in this placeholder shows "Expr" because it contains an expression.
    I don't think this is relevant, but just in case, the expression is:
    =Code.GetPercentageDifferenceBetweenCurrentAndPreviousValue()
    where GetPercentageDifferenceBetweenCurrentAndPreviousValue is custom code for the report which returns a decimal value. This works correctly in Preview mode.
    I now want to apply conditional formatting on this field so the colour of the font changes depending on the value of the expression. I clicked on the text box of that field, and in Properties > Color > Expression > I entered
    =IIF(Fields!PD.Value >= 50,"Green","Black")
    When I go to Preview mode I get the error "The Color expression for the text box 'Textbox24' refers to the field 'PD'. Report item expression can only refer to fields within the current dataset scope or, if inside an aggregate, the specified
    data set."
    I have tried a couple of other forms of the sytax for Fields!PD.Value but it doesn't work. Is my problem a syntax problem or a scope problem, and how do I solve it?
    Thank you

    From your description, PD is not a field so you cannot reference it as a field. You can do what you want by referring to the textbox:
    =IIf(ReportItems!Textbox24.Value >= 50."Green","Black")

  • Spool filename that contains spaces

    Hi Folks,
    Does anyone know a technique for creating spool files that
    contain spaces in the path name?
    I have a script that I want to pass in a directory path as a
    parameter. The script then uses this directory as the path for
    dynamically created scripts which are run later in the main
    script, but SQL*Plus won't allow spaces in the path name.
    e.g.
    myScript.sql
    DEFINE P_DIR = '&1'
    SPOOL &P_DIR.script1.sql
    -- Dynamic SQL statements
    SPOOL OFF
    @&P_DIR.script1.sql
    Called by plus80 @myScript 'C:\Documents and Setting\andy\'
    I've tried various combinations of single and double quotes
    around the variable references and even tried a HOST cd &P_DIR
    command, all to no avail. I'm sure I've seen this done
    somewhere before.
    BTW Using a batch file is not a possible solution :(
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Regards
    Andy

    This is logged as a SQL*Plus bug, #898051. It used to work in SQL*Plus 3.

  • Hyperlinks in other programs that contain hash are being cut off before the hash when opening in firefox 4.

    I have a web app that uses hash marks to display different "pages" without actually changing the page, using the hashchange javascript event. The emails the app send out contain links with hash mark and variables afterwards, but when these links are clicked and opened in Firefox 4, Firefox removes the hash and everything that follows, so the link doesn't work. Why would this change be made (it didn't do it in previous versions)? Can it be considered a bug to be fixed?

    I have just encountered this problem myself and found it to be a problem with recording from Fraps at 30 FPS, i tried at first recording the file playing in WMP with Fraps again at 30 FPS and imported a 30 second clip in to end up with only 4 seconds once in premiere. I then tried recording the video's end in WMP at 60 FPS and it seems fine, it is not clipping the duration down at all and so all i need to do is just edit the gaps in between. So i guess for now just record everything at 60 FPS which i assume you largely do anyway for game videos but even your non-game stuff, record it at 60 FPS until whatever the problem is, is solved. If you have any clips need to fix in the mean time, just do as i did and watch them in a video player in full screen and record with the Fraps input sound turned off, then edit the clip in. hope it helps!
    Edit : One thing i did try, which might be worth you having a go of just to see if it is the same for you is, try putting one of your problem files into windows live movie maker, i did this and the duration was fine, but the audio was cut exactly where Premier was cutting the whole clip. So it is possible it is not directly a Premiere problem.

  • How to cd to a directory that contains spaces in the name

    A brain dead application has created a directory hierarchy that contains white spaces in the directory path. For example: /first_dir/second dir/third dir/filename.
    I want to look at the file from the command line via iTerm/Terminal but I can not get there because the whitespace is interpreted as the end of the text string. Example: cd /first_dir/second dir results in "/first_dir/second no such file or directory"
    If I try "escape" the whitespace with: cd /first_dir/second\ dir/third\ dir I get an error that says "/first_dir/second dir/third dir no such file or directory"
    How can I change to the desired target directory?
    Second question, why do people do such stupid things? Haven't they heard of the underscore "_" for a space??
    Thanks

    How can I change to the desired target directory?
    Drag the file or enclosing folder into the Terminal window instead of attempting to type the path out.
    Second question, why do people do such stupid things? Haven't they heard of the underscore "_" for a space?
    Because they write applications intended for the majority of Mac users, who only go into the Terminal or similar software when troubleshooting.

    I created a photo book in Photoshop elements 11 that contains png files with the invisible backgrounds.  When I export the book to a jpg or a pdf, the png files appear with white backgrounds.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    jpg and pdf formats don't support transparency. You need to use a format such as tif, png or psd that does.

  • Scaling an object that contains a gradient

    I'm working in Illustrator CS3. Got a question: I'm looking to scale an object that contains a gradient, but I want the position of the gradient to remain in the same position on the page. That is, I don't want the gradient to scale along with the object. Is it possible to do this without manually rebuilding the gradient?

    Normal scaling of an object (using the Scale tool, Transform or dragging the bounding box) will always scale the gradient too, but there is a sort of workaround if you know where the gradient starts and ends in the original.
    If you haven't already marked the beginning and end of your gradient, do so by pasting a copy of it in front (Cmd-F) and expanding the gradient - then you can see its start and end points when you turn off the preview. Mark what you need with guides and delete the expanded gradient. It's useful to make a guide that follows the angle of the gradient.
    Now draw a gradient-filled rectangle behind your object and get the gradient to match the angle and position of the gradient in your object by dragging with the gradient tool according to the guides.
    Having done this, copy and scale your object and change it into a clipping mask that masks the rectangle you just drew. Alternatively you can make a masking layer of your object if you know how to do that.
    Lock the rectangle (if you are using a normal clipping mask) and then you can move the object (which is now a mask) at will and the gradient will stay put.
    This is all a bit long-winded but please get back to me if you're lost :-)

  • Calling a c++ dll that contains a dialog.

    Hi,
    I have a c++ dll that contains a dialog. When I try to display the dialog (ShowDialog(SW_SHOW);) the dialog is popped up but the dialog window is frozen and do not display its controls. The Java application is call an intermediate dll create by JNI that is calling the c++ dll.
    Any Suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Udi Raz

    It should be discernable (by looking at the C# code) whether the C DLL needs to be registered.
    If the DLL is serving COM objects it may need to be registered at a command-prompt with
    regsvr32 <your_DLL_File_path>
    If it's supplying .NET assemblies, I think it needs to be registered with
    regasm <your_DLL_File_path>
    Although I've written a few C DLLs, none were called from a C# DLL and I can't advise what subtle things to watch-out for in this scenario.
    Do you have a way to validate/exercise the C DLL's functionality? Is it possible to through-together a C# application (not a C# DLL) that successfully uses the C DLL?
    Luck/Cheers!

  • Parsing data containing quotation marks

    Hi all,
    I am looking to parse through and use data in the following format:
    ed[277]=[277,"Smith",4,14,0,0,"",42493,"AV (A) ","Aston Villa (A) ",19,6.3,7.0,6.3,7.0,"NU"]As you can see, some fields contain quotation marks, and when I test parsing such data (by declaring the line of code above as a String), obviously Java doesn't like it, because when it comes across the first quotation mark (before the word Smith), it thinks that it's the end of the String declaration.
    So my question is, how do I remove the quotation marks, before parsing the data, or is there another way round it?
    thanks
    EDIT: The main problem is the file won't compile if I use the above code as a string like this:
    String str = "ed[277]=[277,"Smith",4,14,0,0,"",42493,"AV (A) ","Aston Villa (A) ",19,6.3,7.0,6.3,7.0,"NU"]";Edited by: JonBetts2004 on Mar 16, 2008 6:45 PM
