Programmatically lookup fields cross site collections

Hi everyone,
With SharePoint 2010, we can programmatically create a custom field for lookup site column cross site collections. However, it seems not to be possible in SharePoint 2013. Has anyone got hands dirty on this case?
Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank Dimitri, I will have to look into it to check whether it supports lookup fields cross site collections or not.
@Amr Fouad: The managed metadata field is itself a form of lookup column so doesn't allow it's values to be used in a lookup.
We have tried with custom field but seems it doesn't work in SharePoint 2013. With SharePoint 2010, there is no problem. I'm wondering whether lookup fields cross site collection is a nightmare or not.

    You will need custom code for this, but since the amount is minimal and this is Stack Overflow I assume that won't be a problem. You will want to make your own listview web part that queries the list using ListViewByQuery. An example can be found here:

  • Can we set List View Lookup Threshold at site collection level ?

    Hello,
    Presently, we have requirement to set the List View Lookup Threshold  at Site Collection/Sub-Site level instead of web application level.
    Could you please let me know, are there any ways to set
    List View Lookup Threshold setting at Site Collection/Sub-Site level
    in SharePoint 2010 using Powershell/Object Model
    Also, it would be helpful if you colud let me know, upto what extent , we can drill down List View Lookup Threshold setting i.e. SubSite/List/Library-Folder.
    Thanks in advance !

    Hi Sagar,
    We cannot set list view threshold value at sitecollection/subsite level. It can only be set at web application level.
    However we can bypass the 5000 limit using PowerShell command by setting “Enable Throttling”= false for particular list.

  • Cross Site collections navigation with publishing feature enabled into sharepoint 2010??

    Hi,
    Is it possible to cross site collection navigation in share point 2010 with publishing feature enabled? Right now we have a site collection with all the departmental sites within it. We are trying to create separate site collection with separate content
    database for each department for better management. But problem with Global navigation as OOB does not provide cross site collection navigation functionality, So looking for multiple site collections or navigation for more than one site collection under single
    umbrella. i was able to get the cross site collection navigation in my development env without publishing feature enabled using below link. But problem with production environment, as all the site collections and sites are publishing feature enabled. how i
    am gonna do cross site navigation with publishing feature enabled?
    http://www.itsolutionbraindumps.com/2011/10/sharepoint-2010-cross-site-collection.html
    Any link or suggest will be greatly appreciated !

    Hi,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you want to create cross site collections navigation with publishing feature enabled in SharePoint 2010.
    Publishing sites (sites with publishing infrastructure) have their own navigation API, and it is much more complicated task to preserve cross-publishing sites navigation.
    We need to implement our own custom navigation provider.
    Please refer to the link below about the cross site collections navigation with publishing feature enabled:

  • Using SPSiteDataQuery for multiple Site Collections

    Hi All,
    I would like to query five contact lists on multiple site collections. I can query the lists using SPSiteDataQuery if they are within the same site collection, but I can not query the lists over multiple site collections.
    Is there a method like SPSiteDataQuery that I can use to query lists over multiple Site Collections?
    Many Thanks,
    Colin

    Hi,
    As you have mentioned that: SPSiteDataQuery which can query multiple webs within the same site collection, but not across multiple site collections. You can't accomplish that easily.
    The solution evolves from first using the SPSiteDataQuery class to run a query upon each site collection and then aggregating the results.
    For detailed information, refer to the following article:

  • Site collections and quicklaunch

    I'm new to Sharepoint and have a basic design question. On the homepage quick launch I would like a link to each department. If I create each dept as a site I can simply inherit the parent quick launch, great. But it has been recommended that I create each
    dept as a site collection instead to allow flexibility and growth. Problem is that there is no integration with the parent quicklaunch- it's just independent. Any suggestions on design?
    -John

    Hi John,
    Yes its good to have site collection at each department level with separate content database, but the moment you have this structure it will be difficult for you to navigate across site collections. The  alternate approach to have the please navigation
    across site collection is to create Site Map xml and use site map provider. For more details on how to implement this please go though below links

  • Cross-Site Display Web Part in SharePoint 2010

    Every document library has its default web part called List view web part. So when we create a Document Library or list on a site, by default a
    List View Web Part is created. We can see that when we try to Insert a Web Part on a site. For instance, for
    Division Level Financial Records Document Library, the list view web part will be called, “Division Level Financial Records.”
    But we will only see this web part when we actually create a library or list on the current site itself.
    I would like to learn about Cross-Site Display Web Part. So I can have a document Library in one site and can retrieve, view, and upload records from a different site within the same site collection. I know Bamboo Solutions offers a web part that can
    do this. Any other? Any sample code to design a custom web part?
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Mayank

    Hello Mayank,
    If you want to display content within a site collection then you can also use CQWP and dataview webpart but if you want to show content in different site collection then you have to create custom webpart.
    You can also try with codeplex webpart:
    http://crosssiteviewer.codeplex.com/
    For creating own webpart, please look at here:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ramg/archive/2009/04/22/implementing-a-simple-cross-site-collection-list-view-webpart.aspx
    Hope it could help

  • Open list form across host header site collections via Modal Dialog window

    Hello,  I have a web application that has two host header site collections in it.  When a user is on Host Header A, I need to open a list's display form that's located on Host Header B.  I'm using the JS function  SP.UI.ModalDialog.showModalDialog(options)
    to open a dialog window to the host header B list's display form.  It loads and shows all the columns, but there are a couple issues.
    1) The scroll bar on the dialog window is not active (can't scroll up or down to see all the columns).  This is an issue on all browsers (IE 8 &9, Chrome, FF)
    2) In IE, the SP ribbon does not display.  In Chrome and FF the ribbon does display and the buttons work fine.
    There's no errors in the ULS logs, and if I use IE8, there's a JavaScript "Access Denied" error.  I've confirmed the user account has permissions on both sites & list.
    My first thought had to do with anonymous access being turned on at the web application level (not the site level) and the credentials not being passed to the new site collection.  But this isn't the case because in Chrome, the ribbon shows and the
    buttons are security trimmed correctly based on the users permissions.  So I know the credentials are getting passed through the dialog window.  And when I use the "Edit' button on the ribbon in chrome, it opens a new dialog window and everything
    works correctly (Scroll bar and ribbon).
    Has anybody been able to successfully open a list form across two separate host header site collections?

    I ended up getting around the cross site collection in the modal window issue by using a custom ASPX page that works as a redirect using JS.
    The link the end user clicks pops open the aspx page in a dialog window.  I then pull the URL of the list item I want to open from the URL and have JS open that form in the modal window.  The key seems to be to open the redirect aspx page under
    the same site collection as the list item you want to view.
    Here's the JS that's in the aspx page.
    <script type="text/javascript">
    // We name the current dialog windown
    window.name = "newSiteWindow";
    // wait until we know the the JS lib is loaded
    ExecuteOrDelayUntilScriptLoaded(loadNewSite, "sp.js");
    function loadNewSite() {
    //grab the list item URL from the URL of the dialog window using a pre created function
    newURL = GetUrlParmByName("listItem");
    //append our dlg query to the end so everything displays correctly. If you do not use IsDlg=0, the ribbon does not display and the window will not scroll.
    newURL = newURL + "&IsDlg=0";
    //use the current window to open the list item we want to go to.
    window.open(newURL, "newSiteWindow");
    </script>

  • Infopath 2013 - Values are not appearing in a drop down field referencing site column which uses lookup in custom list

    I have a master custom list that has a set of site columns. For each site column there is a lookup to a custom list with reference data. When I edit the list in data entry view all values in drop down fields work fine, but when I customize the form for
    the master list, no data appears in the drop down fields. I can change the data binding on the form so it references the the correct data and when I preview the form it works. But when I publish it, no data is available in these drop down fields.

    Hi  shakonarson,
    According to your description, I try to reproduce your scenario but the lookup field works fine.
    When we customize the form for the  list  in the InfoPath 2013 , it is by design that the Drop-Down List Box control cannot  display its value.
    For troubleshooting your issue, please take steps as below:
    Go to lookup List Box on your form in  InfoPath 2013 , right click it and choose “Drop-Down List Properties” from the bottom of your field menu.
    Make Sure you select “Get choices from an external data source” and correct Data source.
    Make Sure the Xpath  of Entries is “d:SharePointListItem_RW” under the dataFields.
    Here is a good blog for sorting lookup column DropDown by customizing your list form with InfoPath you can have a  look:

  • Populate Lookup Lists from Different Site Collection

    Hi,
    we are using O365 environment
    We have 2 Site Collections: Site Collection 1 has Sub sites and has lookup Columns in Lists..
    This Subsite is created as a Site Collection 2 in O365 ..In Site Coll Lists we have Lists which has Lookup columns referring to Site Coll 1
    How do I bring the content over to Site coll 2 with Lookup columns without having the Lists moved from Site Coll1
    Thanks

    This can't be done out of the box.  It would require a custom solution or a 3rd party plugin (not sure if one exists or not).

  • Workspace Project Custom Field Web Part on different Site Collection?

    Hello experts,
    I'm working on a project site template in a SharePoint 2010 environment. My client wants project custom fields to be displayed on the Project Site homepage.
    To accomplish this, I'm using the Solution Starter's Workspace Project Custom Field Web Part.
    It works fine, as long as we create the project sites under the PWA site collection.
    However, due to administrative reasons, we've decided to provision all project sites under a separate Site Collection, in a separate content database. In this case, we manage to add the webpart to the page, but as soon as we try to edit it, to configure
    the visible Custom Fields, we get this error:

    What might be causing this error? Can this be solved?
    Are there any cases of working webparts of this kind in site collections other than PWA?
    If this is a technical limitation, what are alternative options for me to display custom fields on a project site?
    Link to the Solution Starters: http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/P2010SolutionStarter

    Hi
    I did not use this solution starter, but it might be that the webpart just looks for a Project Server instance in the current site collection - and there is none.
    You could use a SQL Reporting Services Report to show on the site to accomplish this. Either you would have to set the project as a parameter manually once for each site, or you could try to determine the project automatically using the URL.

  • Cross domain call to Azure ASPX from SharePoint Online Site Collection

    We have a ASPX page hosted on Azure that is creating a Zip of documents from a SharePoint Document Library against IDs that we are passing it through query string. Next we are flushing this ZIP as a download response to the client
    browser so that user can save it somewhere on his machine. This is working as expected.
    Next we are calling this ASPX from our SharePoint Online Site Collection. Sometime it takes time to create the ZIP & return to the client and therefore we want to implement a Progress Image showing something is happening at the server. We
    have used window.open() method to call this ASPX and at the same time we are showing up the Progress Image. But due to same origin policy we are not able to track any window specific events in Internet Explorer to close the Progress Image when the response
    returns to the client.
    Please suggest a suitable workaround for this scenario. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!
    Jitendra

    Hi Jitendra,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you want to call a aspx page hosted on Azure from SharePoint Online site and implement a progress image to show the progress happening at the server.
    In your scenario, if you want to call the aspx page on Azure to create zip and return to the client, the better way is createing a web service and call it in clinet side. You can add the progress status in the custom code and then judge the status to
    show correponding progress image.
