Project management advice

I'm not experienced when it comes to the best way of organizing a project.
My current project uses footage of about 11 hours and my movie is going to be about 3 hours.
I have it in one project with 19 sequences and plan to output to 3 disks.  I think I have my Project window resources organized pretty well
My question is, is it reasonable to have such a large project in one .prproj?  (I do back up frequently)

Your project will work and go along fine...until the exact time that it doesnt.
I would be maintaining a  backup regime that would minimise the damage if that time ever comes ( and it may not)
I think I would manually backup the MASTER PROJECT incrementally  and also manually backup portions of it. eg Finished sections.  (sequences?)
Depends a bit on how you are editing the sequences? eg flipping back and forth or completing a sequence and moving on to next...
What PPRO vers and what platform are you on?

    but I don't know if it's still in active development. OmniPlan can import MS Project files, but I don't know if that's practical for your needs.
    In a Mac/Win environment, the only practical solution may be to run MS Project in a virtual machine like Parallels or Fusion, or perhaps virtualised with CrossOver.

  • Using BC as a Project Management System

    Hi Guys,
    I'm new to business catalyst, I have signed up to the WebMarketing package and have created my first site. I am including several features to the site including a private forum and several forms for submitting data. I would also like to have a private area to manage projects between the members of the site. This would have task breakdowns, assigning particular tasks to different members and due dates with % completed data, ideally there should be a document system where the work can be saved and linked to on the task page. I just need some advice on whether or not this is possible using business catalyst or if I need to use some external software.

    Since BC doesn't allow you to run server side code or access the data base directly, I can not see the way of doing it at BC end. That said, you can look at different project management solutions out there and perhaps customise it to match the look and feel of your BC site. I'm quite sure that redmine allows this. Check it out at http://www.redmine.org/. Depending on the level of customisation you require you may have to learn some Ruby on Rails.

  • Project Manager: How to include the Trash as an Exclude Path

    I'm delving deep into the wonders of the Project Manager. Wondering if there's any way to add the Trash (on any drive) as an "exclude path" so that I can prevent the PM from going 'dumpster diving' for files in there.
    While on the subject of trash (OT) I really miss the OS9 trash scheme where you had an actual desktop icon for the trash. Also, when you'd open the trash in OS9 to see what was in there, a tally of the total MB/GB of trashed files would be displayed in the finder window. But not in OSX (why?!?!). Anyway, does anyone know how to achieve either a desktop icon and/or a file-size count of trashed items in OSX?

    Truly, the PM being as powerful of a tool it is, sometimes needs our (human) input to get it back in shape. Even the PM preferences DO GET STALE over time.
    One SI after another started to load really slow over here. Sometimes I even had multiple choices from where to take the samples from. Now I know, that I have some duplicates with all my drives attached, but PM designs a structure regarding where to look first. So, I re-scanned those folders concerned. Sure enough, no more "duplicates" messages and loading time was great again. Except for files I did not access since a long time, or files I never loaded.
    Yes, I trashed my PM preferences (user/library/preferences/Logic PMData).
    Did go to Window > Project Manager > Functions > Expanded Scan, with all my drives attached.
    Then I went to bed.
    The next morning, I saved the PM data, quit LP, restarted my computer and... voilá: EXS loading times are up to speed again.
    All under the influence of Red Red Wine.
    It works well.
    Summary:
    Set up as explained above, go to sleep and be amazed about the power of the PM.
    No punishment involved.

    I am looking for some good Project Management Software to run on my MAC OS X. Mostly, I will do be doing Gantt Charts, Critical Path, Resource Loading, Task Creation, Etc. My clients typcially run MS-PROJECT on PCs--so I will need to have some type of import/export compatibility with MS PROJECT.

  • Project Management Question - timelines for Production system deployment

    Hi
    I need an expert advice on setting up timelines for establishing an Oracle Apps Production environment. We are implementing Oracle HR & Payroll at an organization.
    Our system architecture is a 2-node application tier and 2-node DB tier (RAC). RAC is configured by another party and we only have to prepare the application tier (2 nodes)
    We would be installing Oracle Apps R11i (11.5.10) with jserv load balancing on the 2-nodes
    Can anyone suggest how much time this should take to install/configure & patching of the application tier (on 2 nodes)?

  • Files missing in Project Manager pod

    Yesterday, I installed RH8 HTML on my new Win 7 computer.  I then copied over from my old Win XP machine all my files related to a specific help project.  When I use Windows Explorer to review a list of all the .htm files I've copied over, they all are there.  However, when I open the project in RH8 on my new computer and view a list of the .htm files that are in a particular folder in the Project Manager pod, some of the .htm files are missing.  Curiously, if I open the TOC for the project and click a topic that references one of the "missing" files, RH8 opens the file and I can edit it in the usual way.  That indicates to me that the file really is where it is supposed to be and RH8 can find it.  Nonetheless, the filename is missing from the Project Manager pod.  What's more, when I want to insert a hyperlink, the filename is missing from the list of .htm files to which I can link.  This is a problem, obviously.
    I should note that RH on my old computer is version 8.0.1.204 and RH on my new computer is 8.0.0.203.  Hard to believe that would be the issue, but thought I should mention it.  Also, the files that are missing have similar names to files that are not.  For example, reportCheckDataMailmerge is missing but reportCheckDataMailmergeSee is not.
    I would be grateful for any suggested fixes.

    Thank you for the advice and the quick response.  I've applied the two patches, 8.0.1 first, 8.0.2 second, to RH on my Win 7 machine and now opened a backup copy of my project.  To my disappointment, files are still missing from the Project Manager pod. I've tried opening restored backup copies of my project a couple times just to be sure I was opening clean files that have been previously touched only in 8.0.0.  No luck.
    After reading the description of the issues these patches are designed to fix, like you I was pretty confident that the patches would be the answer.  Any additional suggestions?

    When I Attempt to initialize the preferences, the whole system FREEZES UP.
    This happens when it is attempting to rebuild the "Tree".
    AND...
    If I launch the "Project Manager" it locks up the system when reading the directory tree....
    This is a CLEAN INSTALL of 10.4.8.....
    BLACK SCREEN "You must restart your Computer"...

    Yes, but you're not going to like it.
    Before I say more, let me tell you that I went through a similar situation when I first got my G5 (which was a dual 2.7). Kernel panics, every problem in the book. (I recently went through a similar episode with my Quad). And so the advice I'm going to offer you may seem absolutely radical. It might even make you mad. But most of what I'll advise was exactly the advice offered to me over a year ago by this forum's members and it got me up and running.
    First, try re-initializing the firmware on your computer. Best thing to do is take it to an Apple store and have them do it. It's a 2-minute process that could potentially cure all of your machine's ills.
    When you're there, ask them to show you how it's done. It's not something to be done on a regular basis and a pretty radical thing to do, but it could knock the sense back into your computer in a pinch.
    If that doesn't solve the problem, you will need to start from scratch. This means wiping your hard drive entirely (down to zeros). Then re-install the software from your factory OS CD and NOT a clone of your existing drive.
    The reason this is necessary is this: there is every possibility that the OS on your system -- as installed by Apple -- is the very thing that's corrupting your computer/making you unable to run Logic. If you want the explanation I'll give it to you, but suffice it to say that the OS on your factory install CD is correct for your computer, whereas the OS installed BY the factory on your computer may not be. This is not BS or voodoo. It's a documented fact (documentation can be found on Apple's very own website).
    Anyway, after you've wiped your drive and installed the OS from the disk, your very next step would be to install ProApps 3.1.
    Then install Logic and do not copy your preferences from an older backup, period.
    Yes, it will be a total PITA to re-establish all of your key commands from scratch, but by doing so you can guarantee that your preferences are absolutely virgin.
    The next step is to update the OS to whatever you want it to be.
    After this, start installing your 3rd party plugs and anything else you want to add to the computer.
    I suggest you follow these steps exactly in this order, as it worked for me, and worked very well.

    I have just been using a copy of express and noticed there doesn't seem to be a project manager option?
    When using the exs24 it seems like the paths are not set so it has to search for ages and ages to find them, could someone tell me where I need to go to set these as in pro I done this from the project manager.

  • Project Manager error

    Hi, I tried using Project Manager for the first time to archive a project. I chose the option to save all files. Wanted to archive to an external drive, via eSata. I tried to archive several times, but each time got a very generic error message that said, "Unknown error during project manager..." I finally just dragged and dropped the project folder onto the external drive and it copied just fine. I'm wondering if anyone has some ideas as to what could cause the error in Project Manager. I'm on Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit, i7-960, using CS5. Thanks.

    I don't have a solution yet. When I couldn't make Project Manager work, I just dragged and dropped my whole project file onto my archive drive. Next time I need to archive a project, I'll see if any of the advice I received on the forum helps. If it does, I'll let you know.

  • Logic 7.2 crashing on startup, MBP -- something to do with Project Manager

    Hello
    I've been trying to get my new version of Logic Pro running on my new MBP (1.83ghz) with 1.5 gigs for RAM. Upon start-up, Logic always crashes with an error window saying something to the effect: wrong version of Project Manager database.
    I've just reinstalled Logic and it didn't fix anything. Neither has repairing disk permissions.

    I've just trashed and reinstalled 7.0 then 7.2, still getting the same crash. Can you please tell me where the PMdatabase prefs are stored. I'll try deleting them. I just deleted every Logic pref I could find, but still no change to the crash.

  • Project manager trimmed project error

    I am using Premiere CS5, and when I go to project manager and try to "Create New Trimmed Project" it starts and then I get following error:
    "There was a problem copying or trimming the following \\....\..file loaction. Plase make sure you have enough disk space and that you have the correct user privileges to complete the operation."
    I have enough space on all of my HDDs, and also tried opening premiere as administrator.
    I tried this with 2 different projects and the fact is that error comes up with .MOV files that were rendered from after effects.

  • Project Manager crashes everytime.....

    When i do an expanded scan on project manager it crashes on about "7000 new files found" which is my itunes library. I have tried deleting some songs that might be corrupt. Im not sure what to do now.

  • Project Manager in CS6

    I am trying to create a trimmed version of my project, which I shot at 1080 at 24p on a Canon 5d Mark ii. I clicked the Create New Trimmed Project box on the Project Manager, as well as the "exclude unused clips" box. I indicated handles of 24 frames. The problem was the resulting trimmed project included the full clips instead of the trimmed down clips with the handles, and the trimmed project is the same size as the original. Does anyone have any advice on how to solve this? Thanks for your help!

    I've been waiting for Adobe's solution to this for some time now as well.  I often used the "Create New Trimmed Project" feature back in the days of capturing analog from Betacam.
    Now I'm stuck with every miserable second of transferred P2, EX3, DSLR, and other such media footage.
    It's nice to finally hear an explanation of why the feature "stopped" working.  But I know Adobe can figure something out--it's what they do!
    Keep submitting those feature requests, guys.  Let Adobe know it's important, and they'll keep working at it.
