Project settings question from a dummy

After editing nothing but DV in Premier for the better part of a decade I'm moving into the world of HDV, which creates a myriad of questions. But I'll pose only one.
I've shot all the footage for the project in 1080i on my XH A1. I want the edited project output in Flash in 720p at 24fps for Web distribution. What should my PP settings be? HDV 1080i 30fps? HDV 720p 24fps? I guess a more macro version of the question is, should the project settings match the source footage or the output format?
Any insights or guidance would be appreciated.
Tripp

Craig's rule is the one we've always tried to use in my job. Maintain the source content's settings for as long as possible, as uncompressed as possible, holding onto as much picture information as you can, then compress to your final output settings.
For one thing, there's no benefit in changing the source content at ingest to suit export when it's possible you may be asked to;
a) export to a new, different setting than the one originally scoped.
b) export additional output files to different settings for other output requirements (iPods, IPTV, etc).

  • 2 project settings questions

    Hello again
Still experimenting with PrE8 trial version. This is my first experience with a video editor so learning all from scratch. I have a couple of questions regarding the project setting you need to chose when you create a new project. I understand these settings define the "working" enviroment for the editing process - in other words the resolution and all the other characteristics (format, frame rate, etc) that the project will use
    1) I have a camera that´s 1920x1080 30p (progressive) , the GoPro HD. When I look in the new project presets, all 1920 x 1080 presets available seem to be specifically designed for interlaced video. This is indicated by the names of the presets, and by their descriptions as well.  There is only 1 progressive preset, of a lower resolution (720p)
Nevertheless, I tried using the HD 1080i preset, loaded some 1920x1080 progressive mp4 files, and apparently it works perfectly well. In fact when I go to edit>project settings>general window,  the project attributes indicate progressive video !!!
Is there really any difference (or specific requirement)  in a project preset for interlaced vs progressive video? ( I am beginning to suspect that there is really no difference,  and that the coding ( i vs p) does not really form part of the project settings, and that the project will take both forms of input media)
    any thoughts on this?
    2) The GoPro has a non-standard resolution mode, HD with 4:3 aspect ratio : 1280x960 30p
There is no project setting preset that will match this, how can I create one myself ?
The PrE help says this is possible, but I can't find how. ( Edit>project settings will not let me change the resolution)
    from the help
If your source footage requires a custom project preset, you can create one. The procedure for creating a preset differs if you’re changing settings for an open project versus establishing settings for a new project. Presets you create can be applied to new projects, and if you want to back up or distribute  preset files, you can find them in the Settings subfolder of the  Adobe Premiere Elements folder on your hard disk.

Again thanks so much for your time and your help ,  much appreciated.

Unfortunately you will not be able to use the video from those "sports" camcorders directly in Premiere Elements. It's just not compatible with the program.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0
As you can see from this FAQ, there are three options for converting the video:
    1) Convert it a DV-AVI using MPEG Streamclip. It's a free program, but the DV-AVI it outputs will not be hi-def. It will be standard video, but it will be editable in Premiere Elements.
    2) Convert it to a standard def DV-AVI using Quicktime Pro, a $29 download from Apple.com,and edit in Premiere Elements.
    3) Use Quicktime Pro to do your editing. The video will remain a high-def MP4.
The best solution, of course, is if the camcorder itself comes with its own editing software. That's software you KNOW will work with the camcorder's footage.
But, short of that, you'll need to use one of the hybrid solutions above. But you will not be able to edit the footage directly in Premiere Elements. Sorry.

  • PRE9 Project Settings questions

I just got PRE9 and I am working on my first video.  The question I have is
about project settings and resolutions, etc.  I want to output the video to both DVD and to a file that can be copied to a USB thumb drive and plugged into my l 55in HDTV for playback.  it doesn't have to be HD video, but I do want it in 16:9 widescreen atleast.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

The project setting needs to match your video source (i.e. what you are putting *IN* to PRE9). So what is the source of your clip and what settings did your camera use at the time of shooting? How did you get it into PRE9? Ideally can you run one of your video clips through the free GSpot tool and post the screen shot here.
Getting your video output to any output (widescreen or standard) is a feature of the Share tab in PRE9. To output it to two formats (DVD and data file for your USB thumb drive) is two separate Shares that will be found under Share> Disc and Share> Computer (or possibly Share> Mobile Phones and Cameras).
Give us a bit more detail about where and how you want to play that USB thumb drive version.
    Cheers,
    Neale

  • Many questions from a dummy in Forms Web

Hello, I have recently installed in my home Pc (Windows 7 Home Premium),
Database 11g, and Forms (64-bit) 11.1.2.00 just for training,
because I have only experience with 6i (Client-Server ) and wanted to see the new environment.
I have from my previous job (now unemployed) a small application (30 fmb) in 6i and want to make it run in the Web.
I have looked a little the pdf "Upgrading Oracle Forms 6i to Oracle Forms 11g (E24478-01)".
My fmxs and plls are in the folder C:\Retail_app\bin.
Also in this folder I have copied EnableDisableItem.pll and rp2rro.pll
The Sources (fmb, rdf ) are in the folder C:\Retail_app\Scr.
When I open the web, it appears me FRM-40039 Cannot attach library retail.pll while opening form shop.fmx
I search forum for this FRM and looked at FRM-40039 error post 32 bit to 64 bit migration. Please help.
Here, an oracle professional says that we must generate all plls into plx.
But when I try to do this, it says me FRM-91507 Internal error: Unable to generate library.
Also the expert says that it is important that you ensure that the file locations are included in FORMS_PATH (default.env).
    My FORMS_PATH has "C:\Retail_App\Bin;C:\Oracle\Middleware\FRMHome\forms;C:\Oracle\Middleware\FrmInst\FormsComponent\forms"
I don't understand what default.env means. I am new to Forms Web environment.
Also another question, because I am Greek, the form builder environment is a half English a half Greek.
It does not say, "Attached Libraries" or "Program Units" or in the Menu it says "Parathiro" instead of "Window" . I want all to be in English.
Of course the language of my application is Greek, but I want Form Builder to be English.
    My NLS_LANG is
    GREEK_GREECE.EL8MSWIN1253
    Is it wrong?
Also I would like to say supplementary,
that when I open shop.fmb in FormBuilder and go to the library retail.pll, then go to properties of the library, in the functional PL/SQL library location it says
    Retail.pll.
    it does not say C:\Retail_App\bin.
    I tried this.
delete the library from shop.fmb, then attach it again, when asked "Remove path?" I answered No, but when I tried to start the application it says
    FRM-10221, Cannot read file "C:\Oracle\Middleware\FrmIns
    FRM-41810, Error creating menu
Pre-Form Trigger raised unhandled exception "ORA-06508"
I put messages in the PRE-FORM trigger of shop.fmb,
    the trigger starts..
    :system.message_level := '20';
    message('1');
Create_Block_Rg; -- this is a prgram unit of the library Retail.pll
    message('2');
    :system.message_level := '0';
When I started again the application it appeared me message 1 and the failed, which means that it could not again read the pll.
Thank you all, and I wish you a happy new year (with joy and work).

In short, moving from one version to another is generally easy. In many cases, all that is necessary is that your generate new "X" files. In other words, you need to use the Forms 11 compiler or Builder to generate new FMX, MMX, and PLX files. Also, you cannot expect to use a pll at runtime. The pll files must be generated into plx files. The resulting new files should be located in a path which is included in FORMS_PATH. For runtime (browser), FORMS_PATH is set in default.env. For design-time (while working within the Builder), FORMS_PATH is set in the Registry in the same area that contains the other Forms entries. Keep in mind that when I say "design-time" this does not refer to launching a form in a browser from the Builder. Any time a form is running in a browser, all of its config comes from default.env.
Also, in most cases, I would not recommend that when you attach a library that you choose not to remove the path. In other words, do not include the path when prompted. This is because if the path is retained, the form will not work correctly if the application is moved. Instead, choose to remove the path when attaching then ensure that the FORMS_PATH include the location of your libraries.
    So, to your exact comments:
    1. FRM-91507 Internal error: Unable to generate library. This is usually the result of FORMS_PATH not being set correctly or not including the path where references files are located. There have also been reports of this error resulting from setting NLS_LANG to certain languages. This issue was reported in Oracle bug 4131359. This bug has not yet been corrected. To determine if this is the problem, close the Builder and try setting NLS_LANG to something like the following:
    <blockquote>AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8</blockquote>
This can either be set in the registry or as a Windows environment variable. After setting this value, restart the Builder or compiler and retest.
    2. You said, " +I don't understand what default.env+ ". You should become familiar with this file as you will revisit it often. This is the configuration file which contains the environment settings used by the Forms runtime (frmweb.exe). In version 11, this file can be found here:
    <blockquote>C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\ClassicDomain\config\fmwconfig\servers\WLS_FORMS\applications\formsapp_11.1.2\config</blockquote>
In most cases, Oracle recommends that all configuration changes be made from within Enterprise Manager or WLS Console. The only exceptions would be if either of these tools do not manage a particular config file or if you are using the "Development" installation type. Installation types are explained here:

Hi, Pete. Welcome to the Discussions.
    By the numbers:

  • Project Settings question

I'm editing from an external hard drive and every time I close my project, I have to re-link the media clips individually, all 172 of them. Is there a setting that will automatically re-link my clips when i connect to the external drive.
    jeff

This Tips & Tricks article might be helpful, when editing to/from external HDD's: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5880839#5880839
It is likely that you have not assigned a fixed drive letter, for that external HDD, in the OS of your computer. That should fix things, when you do.

  • Premiere Elements 7 missing project settings...

    Hi all,
I am using Premiere Elements v7.0 with a Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder attached. I am having some issues getting my project settings to match my HDV camcorder and the HD video i want to import. When I launch Elements and the welcome screen is open, i click "new project" followed by "change settings" under project settings. From here my understanding is that I should be able to choose from multiple presets that correspond to the quality of the video i am inputing. However, when i open "change settings" it is completely blank. The settings are defaulted to NTSC-DV Standard 48khz and I can't change them. I have tried having my camcorder plugged in and turned on thinking maybe Elements needed to see my camcorder, but the list is still blank.
If i try to get media from my HDV camcorder, i get the message "your current camera setting is different from your project settings. Results may not be optimized." After i close that error message, i am able to playback video and capture, but I am unsure if it is in high-def or not. I would think the project settings need to match the HD quality that i am importing.
Can anyone help me with this issue? Has anyone seen or heard of this before? Thanks for your time.

Hoorah, I have solved this problem on my machine (Intel Quad core with Vista x64 and 8GB RAM).
I sent a support email to Adobe over a week ago but they have not even had the grace to acknowledge receipt. What an amazing way to treat customers that have paid for your product! And that's after providing screen grabs and detailed descriptions of the symptoms.
    Anyway, to the solution.
After many attempts to install, uninstall, repair install etc with UAC turned off, Virus protection turned off and Running everything as Administrator, nothing would yield any Preset choices for new projects.
    So I did the following:
    - uninstalled my paid for version
    - downloaded and installed the Trial version from Adobe.com (670MB download) (I ran the exe to extract the files, stopped it automatically rolling into the Setup routine, right clicked on the msi file in the extracted folder and chose "Install")
    - Ran the Trial version once - all the presets were available. But I could not activate the Trial with my genuine serial number (?!)
    - uninstalled the trial version by right clicking on the msi in the extracted folder and choosing "Uninstall" - this removed most of the program but interestingly left behind a few folders in the Program Files (x86)\Adobe Premiere Elements 7 folder, in particular the "Settings" folder and all its sub-folders which is where the Project presets are stored
    - installed my paid for version by right clicking on the msi file on the DVD and choosing "Install", and entering the serial number at the start of the install routine)
Hey presto, I have a fully functioning install with a full choice of presets.
I have been careful to describe the exact steps I followed. I suspect that "Installing" the "msi" file has exactly the same effect as running the Setup.exe but I have no interest in going through any more installs/uninstalls to prove it! Interestingly, the "uninstall" right click against the msi to remove the trial version does not throw up any Adobe dialogue boxes - it seems to be a Windows level removal, but it leaves the vital folders behind.
I have no idea why the trial version will not let you install the legitimate serial number - the purchased version accepts it but the Trial puts up a red cross when you enter it.
I hope this works for others. If someone is willing to try it, it may be as simple as having a fully populated "Settings" folder present. Extracting the contents of "settings.zip" from the Trial download (it's in the CoreTemplates folder) into the following folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0\settings) may be sufficient.

  • Getting Started with CFBuilder - A Question About Project Settings

    Hello All,
I'm just getting my feet wet with CFBuilder and giving it a spin after over a decade's worth of experience with Dreamweaver and I have a question about setting up my work environment.
First of all, I have two computers that I mainly work from.  My home desktop computer, and a laptop for when I'm on the road.  I keep all of my web site project files syncronized between the two computers using Dropbox.
I've noticed that when I create a new project in CFBuilder it stores a few files in my project root like ".project" and "settings.xml".  It looks like "settings.xml" stores information about which CFBuilder web server should be used for the project.  Unfortunately this messes things up for me a bit because on my desktop a web site project url might be:  http://desktop/myProject/ and on my laptop the project url could be http://laptop/myProject.
The reason this isn't a problem in Dreamweaver is because dreamwevaer stores its configuration/preferences outside of my project folders so I can essentially define any testing server I want for both the desktop and laptop.
Is there a way to configure CFBuilder to store project settings outside of the project folder?  Or does anyone have a suggestion for someone like me who syncronizes their project files from their laptop to their desktop?
Thanks in advance for helping out a CFBuilder noob.

I would recommend using a distributed version control system (DVCS) with a hosted service, such as using Git/Mercurial and Github/BitBucket/UnFuddle.  With Git, you can use a .ignore file to specify files/folders that you want to exclude from being stored in version control (I also exclude my CFBuilder project files from my repositories).  You would then sync your local Git repositories with your service of choice, and they would be accessible from any machine.
There are many advantages of using Git and a hosted service over just Dropbox:
Each computer has a complete copy of the code repository, including all code changes over the history of your project.
You store code modifications in "commits", or small entries in the DVCS.
Commits can contain user-defined descriptions that help you identify what you did at each step of your development process
You can roll back commits if you break something in your code.
You can create "branches" of your code when you want to work on a specific feature of your application, and that branch is kept in isolation from other branches until you are ready to merge it back into the main production code branch.
You can have public or private hosted repositories on the various services, enabling you to work with a team or participate in open-source development.
There are Eclipse plugins available for CFBuilder that provide GUI tools for working with Git and hosted repositories (unless you are comfortable with using the command-line to do all your Git interactions).
I don't think you can separate the project settings from the project in CFBuilder.

  • Exporting from PP CS3 to Encore CS3 defaults to PAL project settings!

I am trying to export about an hour of edited HDV video to Encore, and no matter what I try, the project settings after exporting into Encore is set to PAL and not NTSC. Encore does not allow me to change the settings back to NTSC. I have set all the export settings in Premiere to confirm NTSC is set in the encoding settings. I have tried to change all the default preferences in Encore to NTSC, but still when I export from Premiere, the project settings turns up as PAL. The work around is to export the movie seperately, then import it in Encore with new project settings set to NTSC, but I lose all my chapter information. Anybody else run into this?

Authoring Mode really only governs the size of the Preview window. When you export to BD, DVD, or Flash, Encore will transcode any media that is not legal for the export format.
So in your case, if you burn to Blu-ray, Encore will not transcode your video (if it is an elementary stream); if you burned to DVD, Encore would transcode your video to SD widescreen (720x480/576 NTSC/PAL).

  • Aggregator seems to randomize quize questions from various project files

    I am using Captivate 5.5.
I created 10 quizzes, each in its own captivate project.  Each project has its own quiz ID and the question slides are randomized using one pool.   'when I publish each captivate project file, the quzi (swf file) the questions are fine.
However, when I aggregate all 10 files into an aggregate project, I get quiz questions from different project files...and the title slide doesn't even match the master slide for that quiz!  For example, after aggregating the project file, my Ch 2 quiz would contain question slides from various chapters...and the
the title slide doesn't even match the chapter for that question.

When you use Question Pools, the SWF files for the pools are external to the SWF.  The filenames for the question pools are taken from whatever you called the pool, with the letters _CQP on the end.
When you use Aggregator, all of the SWF files for each aggregated project file are placed in the same folder.  Each project is not kept isolated in it's own folder.
So if any of your question pools happen to have the same name, they may overwrite one another when Aggregator compiles them into the same folder.
Go back into your projects and make sure you first give each published project file a unique name.  Then append the name of each question pool with some extra letters that differentiate it from a similar pool in any of the other projects.  Then republish everything again and build another Aggregated version from scratch.  See if that resolves the issue.

  • A question about project settings..FCP 7

I am using FCP 7 and I'm a little overwhelmed with the myriad of project settings options.
I use a Canon T3i and film in full HD (1920x1080 i think).  All my footage I transcode in compressor to Apple ProRes 422 before importing to FCP projects.
I installed another computer and reinstalled FCP 7 and lost my old templates and importing some footage, I get the red line indicating unrendered footage.
Is there a standard setting that Compressor and FCP use to make it easy to just transcode, import, and edit?  I'd like all my projects to look the best possible in full HD and there's hundreds of preset project settings and I'm a little unfamiliar with all the options.
Anyone have any quick tips, pointers, or thoughts?

If you drop a clip into the timeline, it means the sequence settings don't match the clip settings.  Make a new sequence, add the clip. FCP should ask "do you want the sequence to match the clip settings?" Click YES. If you don't see that, you might need to trash your preferences...or it might be an older version that doesn't support ProRes formats (FCP 5.1 and earlier).
Another way is to choose an EASY SETUP that matches your clip settings, and then make a new sequence.
And your camera shoots 1920x1080p...not i.

  • Project Setting - Transcoding Settings question

    Hello all,
I am a bit confused on the Encore settings.    Should I leave them as the default or should I tweak them??    The DVD tests that I have made seem to have a little bit of interlacing during playback in the Sony player that I am using via HDMI to the Sony TV.
When I check "project settings" in Encore it shows:  Transcode Settings:   Codec MPEG 2, 720x480 Frame Rate 29.97  (my project is 23.976fps)
                                                                                                                  Fields : Lower Field First
When I check "edit quality presets"   It shows  Export Settings -  MPEG2 Blu-ray,    1280x720p  23.976
                                                                        Summary:
                                                                        Output:           1280x720 23.976  De-interlaced
                                                                         Source           1920 x 1080  23.98,  Lower
                                                                         Basic Video Settings:
                                                                                                         1280x720,  23.976
                                                                                                          Field Order  None(progressive)
I guess It just seem like there is conflicing info with the Fields and with the Frame Rate.
Is this the way it is supposed to be or do I need to customize the settings?
Thank you in advance for being nice.

    Stan,
Ok..just to clarify.  Sorry for the long delay.
When I start encore and I get the "new project" window,  I select DVD and
under the transcode settings, it shows Fields: Lower Field First.
Is this ok?   I guess I would think it would be None or Progressive
    Thanks
    Ted

default HDV project settings.  Hopefully these are correct.  I will be burning a Blu-Ray disc for the project.
I assume like other products I have used, the best answer here is the native resolution of your source which hopefully is what I am getting.
Now when I render it via media encoder, it asks me for the "frame size"/resolution for the Blu-Ray disc output.
Also when opening a new project in Encore, it asks for similar information.  I am in NTSC land.
I am familiar with the HD standard and resolutions, and the end result of this project is a Blu-Ray disc played on HDTV's.
However what is the best media encoder resolutoin and encore "frame size" settings for a Blu-Ray disc with an HDV source?
I saw several articles and videos from Adobe about these settings and they explain what they are, but not what the recommended selections are.
As a sidenote, once you are working on a project in PP can you change the settings/resolution of the project?
    Thanks,

PS...Did not know which forum to post this in as it straddles all 3 products!!

First, thanks to both of you for your help!  Hmmm, I am sure the confusion is on my end....
Both of you recommend H.264 vs. MPEG 2 for encoding.  If I am rendering a 1 hour 20 minute Blu-ray, for burning Blu-Rays that I need to paly on a white variety of standalone players, what is the better choice and whay?  I was planning on burning to single layer Blu-Ray at best quality. I am also using 5.1 audio.
For the encoder, I was going to use "HDTV 1080i 29.97 High Quality" as my rendering preset with MPEG2.
However now I am wondering if I should be using H.264?  Harm, you mention it and you also mention "square pixels".  I am familiar with this concept due to my photography work and slide shows vs. video, but where is this "square pixel" setting in the media encoder??
Anna, I appreciate your comment regarding keeping it simple, however, although I am far from a PPro expert, I definitely am into Home Video and understand quality and resolutions, etc., so I want to get the best quality even if I have to do a little work.. So I'll get there.   I see that clicking on that menu item allows you to choose maximum render quality.  I have plenty of RAM but since I am not going SD to HD or SD to HD, perhaps it won't matter much.  However I am confused by the resolution you are showing there, 1440x1080?
As far as my initial question regarding how to setup my encore project, I may have answered it myself by playing around with the media encoder box.  I opened up the drop down advanced section and I see it presents the frame dimensions there.  I would assume I would use the exact same frame dimensions in Encore when setting up my project.
So I guess at this point my only decisions are:
    1) What codec should I use when exporting from PPro?  h.264 or MPEG-2.  If it matters, I am using 5.1 audio also.  (thanks for all your help with that Harm months ago, it works great!).
    2)  What resolution to use in media encoder?
    3)  How do I set square pixels?
    4) Once exported, in Encore, is my assumption correct that I will just use the same resolution as exported from P Pro.
Perhaps that is what Anna was recommending, keep the same resolution and then let Encore render to 1920X1080 however I would want to get all my rendering out of the way during the export process and just keep it all the same in Encore if that is a good workflow.
Thanks again for all the help!

  • I film with an iPhone and edit in PE10, what project settings would be best?

So I'm filming a short film with my iPhone 4S, and editing in PE10. The recommended project setting for the iPhone 4S's footage is 'Flip Mino HD and Ultra HD 29_97'. However, I film using an App called FilmicPro, which allows me to customize frames per second, resolution and audio capture with some settings. In my case, I've set the app to film at 30fps and with a resolution of 1920x1080. I still use the above mentioned project setting. So my first question is:
-If I'm filming in 1080x190 at 30fps, is there a different setting I should be using for the project?
Now for the second part. The first part of my editing process is I start a project, select 'Flip Mino HD and Ultra HD 29_97', then I splice and string together the raw footage from FilmicPro like normal. Next I export the project with the settings:
Quicktime (For email and playback on Mac)
    Output: 1920x1080, 29_97fps, Progressive, Quality 100 48000hz, Mono, H.264
    Source: Clip, Sequence 01,
1280x720 (1.0), 29_97 fps, Progressive, *insert duration*, 48000 Hz, Stereo
    Audio Codec: AAC
    Sample Rate: 48000 Hz Mono
    Video Codec: H.264
    Field Type: Progressive
    Aspect: Square Pixels (1.0)
Render at Max. Depth: 24 bit
After I export the project, I start another project (not changing the project settings from before), and then I import the finished project as media so I can add special FX (in this case muzzle flashes, blood, etc.). However when I add the video, PE10 states the project settings dont match, and asks if I'd like the program to choose the correct settings. I select yes. This changes the project settings to 'DSLR-1080p-DSLR 1080p30'. I edit without issues, and use the same export settings as I did for the base draft. I also notice when I view the project settings in the second project after it changes settings, that it says the editing mode is now 'Sony XDCAM EX 720p'. So my second question is:
-Should I use the setting that PE10 switches to? Or select 'No' and still use the Flip Mino setting i used for the first draft?
The end video still looks great (for an iphone), although of course there is still noise. I'm basically trying to get the absolute best quality possible. If this is as good as it gets, and It turns out ive been doing this right, then that's fine. But if anyone can recomend better settings to use, then please tell. Thanks.
Forgot to mention, I'm using an unmodified MacBook Pro (2006) with Adobe Premiere Elements 10. Dont know if that info is needed, but thought I'd include it.

Maybe I missed something. So extra post on this.

Why? Where did the 720p30 come from?
If you have 720p30 footage, you should be using
    NTSC
    AVCHD
    AVCHD LITE 720p30
If that is what you have, do you really want to export that as 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720?
If an export of 1280 x 720, please look at
    Share
    Computer
    AVCHD
    Presets = MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080 p30
and change the settings under the Advanced Button/Video Tab to look like
Please check out the export settings adjustments that you can make under Advanced Button/Video Tab and Audio Tab for the preset that you select.
