Prolific usb serial driver

Trying to re-install the prolific USBSerialDriver 1.2.1 needed with a GlobalSat BU-353 GPS antenna. It used to work, and this is the correct driver and version. However, when running the installer it tells me it cannot install to the HD because "a newer version of the driver exists on the disk".
I have used kextunload to unload, and then I removed, all USB serial drivers, examined the /System/Library/Receipts/ and removed all copies of any serial drivers from the HD, checked for Preferences, re-started, and the installer still complains.
Happens in both 10.6.5 & 10.6.6
Any suggestions for how I go about solving this one?
Is there a way to override an installer?

I have one usb-serial adapter which also seem to have a pl2303 and this is what I get:
usb 3-2: new full-speed USB device number 3 using ohci-pci
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
usbserial: USB Serial support registered for generic
usbcore: registered new interface driver pl2303
usbserial: USB Serial support registered for pl2303
pl2303 3-2:1.0: pl2303 converter detected
usb 3-2: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0
According to lsusb this is the converter:
0557:2008 ATEN International Co., Ltd UC-232A Serial Port [pl2303]
I would try to check if the converter is really working on another machine, that one might be broken or a fake.
Edit:
Typo.

  • Prolific USB Serial Connector

I have a Prolific USB/serial connector that works fine on my iMac, but when I plug it into a new Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server, the device doesn't show up.
The device that shows up on my iMac is:  cu.PL2303-004014FD.  Nothing like that shows up on the Mac Mini.
Anybody else run into this?  I know this is an old peripheral, but it works fine on my other machine.  Is there something different about how devices are handled on the server version (seems strange, but perhaps...)?
    Thanks,
    -Mike

Have you tried the most recent drivers?  Using these, your device should show up as /dev/tty.usbserial, whether you're in 32-bit or 64-bit mode.
On the off chance you've got an OEM model that uses the PL2303 chipset, you may need to make some minor modifications to the extension to get it to recognize the Product and Vendor code of your slightly-modified hardware.  This is a two-step process:
Do a "tail -f /var/log/system.log" and disconnect and reconnect your PL2303.  You will see a message from "pcscd" that gives you both codes in hexidecimal.  You can always see it in System Profiler, but it might not be as clearly identifiable as the message you get when the unrecognized device gets plugged into your Mac's USB bus.
Edit "/System/Library/Extensions/ProlificUsbSerial.kext/Contents/Info.plist" to update the listed "idProduct" and "idVendor" values to the decimal value of what you gathered in Step 1.  You must convert from hex to decimal or nothing will happen.
After a reboot, your serial adapter should appear at /dev/tty.usbserial.  This has worked well for me for about a year using an IOGear GUC232A ($22 on Amazon and no current OS X drivers).  I am just updating to the new version of the Prolific driver listed at the above URL, so YMMV.
Disclaimer:  If you are not prepared or experienced enough to edit an installed System Extension and don't understand the possible harm that could come, even if you do it correctly, I would not recommend attempting this.
Message was edited by: Bafflegab - updated the /dev path for the active device to include the tty prefix.

  • Installing USB Serial Driver on Windows XP

Have a new XP based pc.
No serial port for my old PalmPilot (circa 1997) to dock to though.
No worries I thought. Bought a USB-Serial connector and downloaded the USB-Serial Adaptor software from the Pilot website.
Only problem is, the hardware doesn't recognise the software "PalmConnect USB Adapter" ... can't find it even when told specifically where it is..
Has anybody else had this problem and if so, what's the resolution?
For info, the link to the USB-XP driver page is:

The mistake here was trying to use the usb-serial adaptor software from the Pilot website. Couldn't get it to pick up the connection at all and I suppect that it was rubbish anyway (looking at some of the files looked very w2k rather than xp!!). Solution: Plug the adaptor in by itself. Allow the hardware to install itself. Connect the serial cable and making sure I had the right COM port chosen (4 in this case), off it went and hot-synch'd.
I found the same situation as "b_mac" above.  I tried his solution but the USB adapter driver failed to found the software and install, even when I pointed it directly to the folder where the driver was sitting.  Still no luck.  Anybody find a different solution that worked?

  • How to implement usb touch driver in Wince 6.0?

    Dear all:
I try to implement a usb touch driver in Wince 6.0, but I have some question as below:
    1. What method do I use, usb client driver or touch driver?
    2. Does any reference link?
        I surved this link : https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee485627(v=winembedded.60).aspx
But I still have no ideal.
    Thanks for your help, Victor

Definitely you need a USB client driver. Again what client class driver is required is depend on the USB touch screen module. Some vendors have a touch screen consist of one touch screen controller and a USB serial controller chip, the touch screen is exposed
as a USB serial client device though this you will read/configure the touch controller. In this case you need a USB serial driver to access this as a serial port and on the top you have to develop a touch driver as shown on the above link. It is all vendor
specific. Normally you need a bus to  interface the touch controller. some touch screen controller are interface with I2C or SPI. Similarly here the bus is USB for your touch screen. So you need both driver, one is bus driver to access the touch controller
and another driver is to implement the touch functionality as shown in the above link.
First of all find the USB client class for your touch screen driver. you can contact  the vendor or read the datasheet given by them.

  • USB Console (Serial) Driver fails to install on Windows 8.1 x64

The USB console cable driver v3.1 will not install on Windows 8.1 x64.  Had a similar problem with Windows 7 x64 but this was fixed using Greg's (greggar25) excellent step-by-step procedure (see post: https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11492306/usb-console-driver-install-failing).
I am using the driver from this link: http://software.cisco.com/download/release.html?mdfid=282774228&flowid=7442&softwareid=282855122&release=3.1&relind=AVAILABLE&rellifecycle=&reltype=latest
I followed the same procedures I did for Windows 7 and the install goes without a hitch.  Reboot and connect the USB cable, opened Device Manager and now I have a COM Port randomly appearing and disappearing with its number incrementing well above 1,000.
A few times while it appeared for a few seconds, I was able to right click on the properties, update the driver and chose Cisco Serial and it settled down but it did not assign a COM port.  Then a few seconds later, it starts the disappearing/reappearing thing again.
Anyone have luck getting this to work with Windows 8.1 x64?

     Hi,
open Device Manager by simply typing the words on the Windows 8.1 Start Screen. The Search Charm opens and click Device Manager in the displayed list.
In Device Manager a new hardware category, CiscoUsbConsoleWindowsDriver, is displayed. It has two components: the Cisco Bus enumerator and the Cisco USB to Serial adapter. Expanding the Ports hardware category shows a new Cisco Serial port.
     or
    Look into below
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11492306/usb-console-driver-install-failing
    1) Install the usb console driver\windows 64\setup(x64)
    2) Follow the wizard and accept the defaults
    3) Restart the computer (the installer usually says it needs a restart)
    4) After restarting the computer, plug in the usb cable
    5) The computer should say installing Device driver software and fail at the Cisco Virtual Comm Port00
    6) Click the Windows button, right click computer, manage
    7) Under Computer Management, Click Device Management
    8) Go to Ports (COM & LPT)
    9) You should see the Cisco Virtual Comm Port00 with a Yellow Exclamation point on it
    10) Right Click on the Cisco Virtual Comm Port00 and select Properties
    11) Click the Driver Tab
    12) Click Update Driver
    13) Select Browse my computer for driver software
    14) Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
    15) Choose the Cisco Serial Driver
    16) Device Driver is installed successfully, take note of the com port it is using and enjoy.

  • Is it possible to tie a PDF document to a USB flash drive serial number

I am looking to publish a number of PDF files (200+) on a USB  flash drive.
I wanted to provide some copy protection but do not want the user to have to connect to the internet.
Therefore the standard DRM offered in Livecycle does really work in this situation.
So I was wondering whether it would be possible to embed a Javascript in each file that, when first opened, would check to see if the USB flash drive is present. It would look at the serial number or Company ID to check for a match. If it was fine then the file would open normally.
The reason I want to persue this method is that I want to keep it seamless for the user, yet still restrict use to those who havent purchased the product on the USB flash drive.
I suppose this would only work if the PDF files are located on the USB drive. I'm not sure whether it could still check for the USB drive if the PDF had been copied to the hard drive and opened. This would be fine also.
    Thanks

This is only possible when you write a plugin for this. With Javascript this is impossible.

    Buzz,
Thanks for making your post here in the Discussion Forums.
Your USB question is an interesting one. While you may be used to using USB hardware with your computer, USB hardware is not generally used in the LabVIEW RT operating environment. As this pair of short KnowledgeBases notes, USB hardware is not supported under LabVIEW RT and having USB enabled in RT tends to introduce jitter to your RT application:
Does LabVIEW Real-Time Support USB Communication?
Too Much Jitter When Running a LabVIEW RT Application
Hopefully, this won't be too detrimental to your application. If you are looking for a way to accomplish something without using USB you may want to post some details of what you are trying to accomplish. This forum would hopefully be able to guide you toward an alternative method of accomplishing your goal.

  • USB Serial CDMA Mobile WWAN CCL PPP PL2303

    Hello all,
I have an internet connection issue or issues. It seems this is a complicated issue because there are so many layers involved.
    Hardware:
    iMac9,1
2, IOGear USB Extension cables (powered)
Mobile phone manufacturer supplied USB-Serial Cable.
Huawei branded CDMA 2000 1x RTT mobile phone with Qualcomm modem and Prolific PL2303 USB-Serial Bridge.
R-UIM card for local ISP in Nepal (United Telecom Limited)
    Software:
    Mac OS 10.6.8
I have tried a few different ways to make the connection and getting a connection isn't necessarily the issue.
First I tried to use the Prolific PL2303 kext. It's widely known you have to add the devices Vendor ID and Product ID to the info.plist file for the driver to load the device at boot time. But, apparently we don't need that third-party kext because Apple has built in support for Huawei as evidenced in three existing kext files: WWANSupport, WWANSupport1, and AppleUSBMergeNub (that lives as a plugin inside IOUSBFamily.kext). Problem was that the phone was not being recognized by the system even though the Vendor ID was a match. Any guesses why?
I figured a way for the device to be recognized via the CellPhoneHelper.kext. Huawei is not listed but duplicating the 'Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM (KPC680)' IOKitPersonality and then reconfiguring it to match my Huawei device by changing the Vendor and Product IDs worked perfectly. Once I cleared the system cache files and rebooted the phone was recognized immediately as a WWAN device and I could set it up in Network Preferences. Using the Generic and CDMA settings for the modem script I am able to connect. That's where the fun bit ends.
The connection gets wonky. It randomly leaves me in limbo, seemingly connected but not able to receive any data. If I 'disconnect' using the WWAN menu, it shows me as being disconnected but actually I am not, the phone is still be connected to the tower. If I open up a serial program I can see that the phone is still sending data. The only way for me to end the connection is to unplug the USB cable. Then I can 'Connect' again and everything pretty much repeats. I will have a decent connection and then at some random point I will loose it and be unable to disconnect from the tower. This is a stationary setup; not roaming.
One thing I have noticed is that the tower will give me a different WAN address randomly. Maybe this is the issue! While connected I will see in 'ppp log' that I am being logged out and logged in again and then I am given a different LAN address and WAN address. Sometimes I will get an error, 'Could Not Authenticate" and I will be disconnected. Sometimes it appears to work seamlessly. This all happens automatically. I am not sure from which side this is being initiated, my modem or software or the ISP's?
I have poked around but don't really know what I am looking for. Is this an issue with the CDMA.ccl, or an issue with PPP, or is it a USB IOKit issue, or a kext issue? Who knows.
When typing 'sudo dmesg' in Terminal I get something that seems odd to me, but might be completely normal.
    AppleWWANSupport1: Version number - 2.0, Input buffers 16, Output buffers 4
    AppleWWANSupport1: Version number - 2.0, Input buffers 4, Output buffers 2
I took note of the Input and Output buffers in the CellPhoneHelper.kext info.plist and they are 16 and 4 for my device. I don't know why 4 and 2 immediately override those. I don't see anything in AppleWWANSupport1 that has 4 and 2 set for buffers. Could this be the issue, i.e. the connection freezing because the buffers get full? Or could it be because the mobile phone is using two channels for the modem, /dev/cu.wwan and /dev/cu.wwanCNTL and that is normal??
I took a look at the CDMA.ccl modem script. I am not a modem script designer but I noticed that 'C' is set twice in the same init, &C1&C2. I am not exactly sure why that would be, any ideas?? Track remote DCD (&C1); Unix compatible DCD control (&C2). What about 'hsreset'? Not sure but I guess the Prolific PL2303 chip handles the serial port flow control options? The literature is a bit out of date on this.
So, lots of questions and no answer so far. A bit too complicated as there are so many layers working together and this is not a supported configuration. I do see a lot of people asking similar questions but mostly it's on different systems, like Linux, etc.. and with different hardware.
Would love to hear from someone with experience, a programmer or someone familiar with Apple's IOKit and modem inits.

  • USB-Serial Controller D

I have just recently switch to a Mac Book Pro and I have a Trendnet TU-S9 usb to serial adapter that I would like to use on my Mac. Can anyone tell me what I would find this device under in /dev/ ?
In my System Profiler it is detected as:
    USB-Serial Controller D:
      Product ID:    0x2303
Vendor ID:    0x067b  (Prolific Technology, Inc.)
      Version:     4.00

      Location ID:    0xfd120000 / 4
      Current Available (mA):    500
      Current Required (mA):    100
Any information would be a big help. I am not finding anyone online about this and the vendor that told me it was a mac issue and to contact Apple. I would simply like to use screen /dev/tty.whatever 9600, but I can not figure out that the "whatever" will be.
    Thank You,

I fixed it. If anyone is having the same issue with a USB-Serial Controller D with the Vendor ID Prolific Technology (TRENDnet TU-S9) the drives from TRENDnet's website for some reason will not compile successfully in Mac OS X 10.6.7. Go to http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?id=31 and download the correct drivers: md_PL2303_MacOSX10.6_dmg_v1.4.0.zip. Once installed your Mac Book Pro will reboot then you can use screen /dev/tty.usbserial to access your Cisco Switches and Routers. Good Luck

  • External USB hard drive not being recognized

Hello! I'm sure this has been posted before, but excuse my naivety with this sort of thing...
I have a mac mini 10.5.6 (1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) and I run the Time Machine function to an external usb hard drive. The hard drive worked fine (plugged into the usb port on an older keyboard), but I went out and bought a new aluminum apple keyboard (because they look so cool ^_^ ) - I plugged the external usb drive into the keyboard and it wasn't recognized, so I tried plugging the external drive directly into the mac mini, but it is still not recognized. It is not showing up in Disk Utility or in System Profiler
Help? I'd hate to have to give up this fancy keyboard...
    Thank you!
    Dr. E

I believe I had my external drive plugged into the (old) keyboard because with the old mac that I had didn't have a free usb port for it - so when I got the mini I just plugged things back in where they were. But I have always had the Time Machine back up to this drive (connected to the keyboard) though it has been slow (another reason I thought the new keyboard was a good idea).
I tried restarting the computer without the alu keyboard plugged in, but same problem of no drive showing up.
Here is what System Profiler has to say about my drive:
    USB2.0 Storage Device:
    Capacity: 93.16 GB
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: Yes
    BSD Name: disk1

    Current Available (mA): 100
    Current Required (mA): 0
    Mac OS 9 Drivers: No
Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported

    Available: 53.14 GB
    Writable: Yes
    File System: Journaled HFS+
    BSD Name: disk1s2
    Mount Point: /Volumes/USB
I don't know the brand or model as it has 'always' been in the case that in which it currently resides and I didn't physically buy the thing :\ I do know that no software was installed with the drive as I assumed that when I put all the old info from the original mac to the mini that it was the sort of thing that would carry over.
Sorry I'm not terribly helpful - Thank you!

    Hi @Savvy58
I did some further looking into that Error Log you posted. Basically, it means that is looking for a certain location that doesn't seem to be there. This could be a problem with the USB Recovery drive that you have. I would recommend that you contact HP. You can reach HP Total Care at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or start here if you live outside of North America.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue.

  • External USB Hard Drive not recognized on iMac HELP!!

I am currently using a i5 iMac running Lion 10.7.5
I have recently partitioned a Verbatim USB external hard drive and uploaded all my footage from a wedding. This was done with no problems and the QT videos could be opened from the hard drive.
    A few weeks later, the hard drive does not show up in my finder. BUT it is recognized in disk utility. Here is a screen shot;
    So first I ran "Verify" and it told me to repair disk. After clicking on Repair, I got this;
It is giving me the error message "Invalid B-Tree node"
    Here is more info on the hard drive;
    Name : Hitachi HTS545032B9A300 Media
              Type :           Disk
Partition Map Scheme :           Master Boot Record
              Disk Identifier :           disk1
Media Name :           Hitachi HTS545032B9A300 Media
              Media Type :           Generic
              Connection Bus :           USB
              USB Serial Number :           091004B3066D
              Device Tree :           IODeviceTree:/PCI0@0/EHC2@1A,7
              Writable :           Yes
              Ejectable :           Yes
              Location :           External
              Total Capacity :           320.07 GB (320,072,933,376 Bytes)
              Disk Number :           1
              Partition Number :           0
              S.M.A.R.T. Status :           Not Supported
Can someone give me a step by step on how to get the hard drive working again? It would mean the world to me as this footage is priceless and irreplaceable.
OR can you refer me to someone (Geek Squad? Apple Store?) that might be able to help me out?
    Thanks in advance!

The error message invalid b-tree node size indicates that the directory on the disk is corrupt. The way that it can be repaired is to reformat as disk utiltiy says.
It is recommended that the data be backed up first before either of this solution are done.
Since it is not be recognized by the sytem at all it does sound like you can back it up now.
    Do you have a backup?
If you don't there is every chance you may lose all your data.
You can check to see if a data recovery service can recover any data for you. If you go that route you are looking at spending $$$$

  • How to mount USB & CDROM drives from single user mode - Solaris boot disk?

    Hi All,
I need to carry out ufsrestore on a single newly replaced system disk (no redundancy / mirroring) from either USB or CDROM drives from the following steps:
    ( i ) GRUB => e, e, cdrom –s, Enter, b (boot from Solaris 10 x86 media).
( ii ) Choose menu 1 for Install Solaris Interactive Mode to reach single user mode.Below are the commands that I have tried in single user mode without success:
mount –r –F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 /cdrom (after unmount Solaris CD)
mount: /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 is not a DOS filesystem.
    svcadm –v enable smserver
svcadm: Pattern ‘smserver’ doesn’t match any instances
    svcadm enable autofs
svcadm: Pattern ‘autofs’ doesn’t match any instances
    devfsadm
devfsadm: mkdir failed for /dev 0s1ed: Read-only file system
    mkdir /mnt
mkdir: Failed to make directory “/mnt”; Read-only file systemPart of the problem is due to the current READ ONLY filesystems which does not allow the creation of mount point such as /mnt.
I have been able to create both / root (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) and /export/home (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) filesystems with newfs that are awaiting for restore using ufsrestore.
The only option I am left with is to attach a secondary disk to install Solaris 10 on either of them before bring the system to multi-user mode so that service such as volmgt, autofs, volfs are available to access USB & CDROM drives.
Any suggestion on how to resolve this issue?
    Many thanks,
    Jack

    Hi JKGN,
Is the directory a located under the root filesystem. ie /a? Are there any other mount point for say USB drive as well? I am not in a position to try it out right now but will get back
to you soon on whether /a exist or not.
Btw, the last thing I managed to do on this system at the time was added a secondary 1TB internal disk with the intention to restore both / and /export/home data onto this disk while
making use of all the disk device management services such as the following services only available in a fully installed Solaris system (both single & multi-user modes) installed on the
    primary disk:
    # svcs smserver
    STATE          STIME    FMRI
    online         Jun_08   svc:/network/rpc/smserver:default
    # svcs autofs
    STATE          STIME    FMRI

    # devfsadm

As a result, I am left with no option but the need to rebuild this system with only a single primary disk while in single user mode. However, the single user mode that I am in is the
one from Solaris installation disk with restrictive (_cannot create folder for mount point or running disk management utilities_) capability such as those services just covered, compared to one from a completed Solaris installation system with full access to all filesystems and utilities / commands in general.
I would very much value your assistance on how to mount both CD & USB in this restrictive limited Read Only OS (assume that it is running from memory) in order to get complete access to
the blank primary disk so that full restore with ufsrestore could take place.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jack
