Promise Vtrak Arrays not showing Disk Utility

We got an Promise VTrak yesterday with 8 750 GB HD. Created two Disk Arrays with three drives and one spare each using the Promise WebPAM utility. Yesterday one volume showed up which I could partition. Today we decided to remove the spares. Modified and used the following script http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1164 for use for 8 drives. But now no 'raw' drives show up in Disk Utility. Restarted the XServe but nothing. They SCSI Logical units show up in System Profiler.
Anybody any ideas?

Together with Promise I got it to work. Following three things are important:
1. Since we had it directly attached to the XServe we had to disable LUN Affinity. The weird thing is that it does not say so in Apple's Documentation: (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1164). You only need that for connecting an XSAN or on Promise: (http://kb.promise.com/Article.aspx?id=10074).
2. With two arrays you need to use both controllers.
3. Make also sure that you set your arrays 'left' and ''right'. Not top and bottom like I did. (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1200).
And when that's all set properly they will popup after a restart on your desktop ready to be partitioned for use.
And 4. Get a 4 port FC card for your XServe. Not essential but to get high uptime and throughput worth the extra investment.

• Snow Leopard Disk Utility not showing Disk

Heya, before anyone jumps to conclusion that the disk is just dead, please read the following info.
Background: Basically I'm upgrading to Snow Leopard and I had a striped RAID that I wanted to break and format. They held my Leopard install and I know there's issues w/ SL install seeing RAID (even doing disk boot didn't work for me) so I went the route of booting from SL disk and I broke the soft RAID.
_The problem:_ After I broke the RAID only one of the two HDs was showing up, the one in Bay 1. So I formatted it to see if for some reason it would do something about it. No dice. I even tried taking out the other disk and putting it in bay 1, but to no avail.
*So here's the weird part*: I booted with the Leopard disk and it saw both drives with no problem. The other one that wasn't showing up still was thinking it was part of it's own RAID but after I Erased it, it looked exactly the same stat wise as my other Seagate. So key point: _nothing wrong with the HD_.
_Other info:_ I went into the System Profiler on each booted OS disk and the Leopard one was showing both drives in the Serial-ATA section just fine, wheres Snow's Profiler said there was some error finding the info. Believe me I tried this several times, back and forth.
So has anyone had and/or fixed a problem like this where Snow Leopard's disk utility is only finding one (a specific one) hard drive that was perhaps previously raided?

Update : So I talked to Apple Support and they suggested installing Leopard on the one drive that is found and seeing if it recognizes the drive afterward. It did in fact find the drive just as I had named it. *The Bad*: obviously I can't create a soft RAID using the boot drive while actually booted up and of course the SL install disk still won't find the drive.
But there's a new development: I did the sleep wake test to make sure I didn't go through all this trouble for nothing (I was having a wake from sleep problem in Leopard) and after successfully waking it gave me a nice error saying how a drive was ejected improperly *and the drive no longer would show up in the finder* and the system profiler threw up another error.
I did the same sleep wake test booted in Windows 7 on my 3rd bay drive and both drives would show up and be usable (or at least readable) so I'm still pretty sure it's not the drive.
It must be something about OS X not wanting to power-up or read my other drive correctly, especially after sleeping?

• OSX 10.5.6 doesn't see Fibre Channel Disk array, neither does Disk Utility

My system is a Power Mac G5 Quad, 6gb Ram, 1Tb internal hard drives, 1Tb external and several portable drives as needed.
The Drive array in question is a Fujitsu GR710 which contains 12 Seagate Cheeta ST336605FC drives which are around 35gb each.
OK, I have been given a Fibre Channel system, that at one time worked with OSX. I had to move it and now it doesn't show up on Disk Utility anymore. I can totally reformat it if possible, but I have to be able to see it first.
System Profiler sees the setup as:

Fiber Channel Preferences shows that a link is established.
Hardware RAID says that there is no hardware present.
I am using the Apple MA900A/G Fibre Channel Card to hook into the Drive array. It is hooked up with both ethernet and fiber optic cables.
I have used an IP scanner to search for the IP of the array and only find one that I can't identify at 224.0.0.251 another scan reports an IP of 0.0.0.0, neither worked when I tried to use Safari to access it.
I have tried several programs to try and get into this array and nothing sees it. All my experts tell me that I will need to use the Terminal program and use command lines to access the drives, but I can't find any information about what to do there. I've been told I need the driver for the array, naturally there isn't a driver for Mac to be had, but there are drivers for solaris, Unix, and windows. The last expert said to use the Unix driver, but I don't know where to put it in the system.
So I need help, Terminal commands to talk to the drive and revive it hopefully, or a system program that will do something similar. None of my diagnostic programs sees the array. The Card came with no software or instructions. Neither did the array. I haven't been able to find any hardware information about the drive from FuJitsu at all, it's too old for them to bother with anymore.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Doc

I have to go with William on this one - if it's shows up over fibre then it should be okay. Have you gotten the admin module to see the device over ether? I have a feeling that is you can get the software to see it you might be able to configure the device into something the computer could mount.
The Promise that way - you can configure the device entire from the web interface and you don't need fibre communication working for any of the configuration of what RAID you want and which disks are attached with what set etc. Once the RAIDs are configured into volumes then the Xserve sees they exist and you can use Disk Utility to format them. If you don't need fibre communication I don't see how SCSI drivers would matter over ethernet. But maybe the box is a strange beast - odder things have been made.
Barring that - can you attach the device to an older machine with the drivers and configure the device into raw volumes and then an HFS+ (or whatever you want) system? If you did that and then switched the box back to Xserve it should be able to pick up the configured volumes drivers or no.

• HT2648 I want to Repair Disk Permissions, but I do not have disk utility 10.4.3 on my Mac os X. How do I download it? Why did I not get it when I purchased the computer 2 years ago?

I am having frequent pop-up boxes. It is very annoying. It was suggested that I repair permissions, but when I try, my 2 year old computer. with OSX operating systems has an old desk utility, and I cannot use it. How do I acquire disk utility 10.4.3?

Any reason why you have not updated to the final version 10.4.11 of Tiger?
General advice on updating Tiger:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
And for Intel Macs here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• IPod Shuffle not recognized, device not recognized, disk utility doesn't...

...disk utility doesn't show up.
It's all on my wife's computer as it's her iPod. Up until yesterday - and she didn't change ANYTHING - iTunes 7.01 had no problem wiht the iPod. Today, however, iTunes nor her Mac recognizes the iPod. Can't do a thing with it. It displays a nice green light, but that's it. All connections checked and re-checked. Looked at the disk utility and there's no image for her iPod.
I plugged it into my own Mac and iTunes 7.02 tries to upload/access her library from her iPod and 1) after an interminable wait, say four to five minutes, it recognizes that there's a shared library available, and 2) then it says there's some firewall that won't let iTunes access the liberary.
I don't have an iPod of my own, so my experience is really limited. She uses her iPod all the time and, again, hasn't done anything different than she did last night.
What is to be done? Thanks in advance for GOOD tips.

Turns out she's running iTunes 7.1...
Still nothing.
Anyone out there, please?

• Disk Utility not running & disk utility icon changed?

Hello.
I have an 8 month old MB, 2.4 Ghz, 4GB Ram, 160 GB HD, running 10.5.5. I normally do the updated from Apple when the updates come out.
Anyway, I was trying to reformat/erase an external hd; I didn't see the Disk Utility icon on my Dock. I had used Disk Utility before (last time was maybe a month or two ago). Turns out the program is on the dock, but it has a icon (a piece of paper with a pencil, brush and ruler in the shape of an A). I click on it, it jumps once and does nothing. I figure it needs to be reinstalled, but the DVD that came with the computer says I can't install OS X on this computer.
I booted from DVD, ran disk util from there and fixed permissions. still same issue. Also noticed that the Airport Utility now has the same icon (a piece of paper with a pencil, brush and ruler in the shape of an A), but the name is in an Asian language.
Any thoughts on how to get disk utility working and what is going on?
Thanks

The icon on the dock is not the utility; it is an alias, a link to the actual utility.
Look in your Applications->Utility directory to see if the real Disk Utility is still there or not.
Ditto with Airport Utility. Is the real one still there?
Let us know.
You may have a corrupted preference file or a failing HD.

• Array created using Disk Utility keeps disappearing.

I've got a 4-bay Drobo unit that I use for my iTunes and iPhoto libraries. I recently ordered a handful of new 2TB drives to max out the capacity on it.
In order to keep all of my data intact, I installed a couple of drives in a spare 4-bay disk enclosure and used Super Duper to duplicate the Drobo files onto half of the new hard drives. I then pulled two drives out of the Drobo (a 1TB and a 1.5TB) and used Disk Utility to create a concatenated disk set in the spare 4-bay enclosure.
Next step was to use Super Duper to duplicate the libraries from the two new drives (still in the spare 4-bay enclosure) to the new concatenated disk set (also in the 4-bay enclosure).
When that was finished, I pulled the two new 2TB drives out of the 4-bay enclosure and put them into Drobo with the other new drives, fired it up, formatted, and told Super Duper to duplicate the libraries from the concatenated disk set (in the spare 4-bay enclosure) to the newly supersized Drobo.
Maddeningly, the concatenated disk set keeps "unmounting" and disappearing from the Finder - usually right in the middle of a copy operation. I get a handfull of folders and their files, and then "Poof!" it disappears. Restarting the Mac has no effect; I have to unplug and repower the hard drives.
I've got about 1,300GB left to copy over; I can't sit there for thirty straight hours and babysit this setup. Anybody have any idea why this keeps happening?

You don't have a problem and repairing disk permissions does not need to be performed daily or on a regular basis - only after installing software (especially after installing 3rd party software that uses an installer) and as a system troubleshooting procedure only.
Check Maintaining Mac OS X for recommended maintenance for OS X (which isn't much) focusing on the Maintenance Myths section.

• PowerBook will not boot, Disk Utility does not see drive, HW Diag Pass

My PowerBook Ti will no longer boot. I am getting a flashing what looks like OS 9 face, and folder in the middle of the screen, and they alternate.
I have Tiger Disks so I tried booting from them and running the disk utility. The drive is not recognized.
I decided to run the PowerBook's hardware diagnostic disk. Both sets of test passed. I was expecting to see the mass storage one to fail, but it did not.
I am kind of stuck, does anybody have any kind of suggestion?
Thanks in advance,

PS Hitting apple S is not recognized during the boot.

Could this be a bad logic board????
Yes. Or a bad hard drive cable, or a poorly seated connection on either end of that cable.
The HD cable is fairly delicate and needs to be handled with care when connecting and disconnecting, as when you're replacing the HD. It's possible that your first HD failed, and then you damaged the cable when removing it or installing the new drive, so that even though the second drive is new and presumably in good working order, it can't be used because the cable is now bad. I would suggest investing a small amount in a new HD cable before replacing the LB or returning the new HD. Any of these parts vendors should be able to supply one:

• WD Smartware External HD recognized in Finder but not in Disk Utility

So I'm having a bit of a strange problem that is a reversal of what I see answered in the forums. I have a 2tb Western Digital Smartware external hard drive that I used to use on my old PC. I decided that I wanted to start using it with my Macbook and since there wasn't anything important on it I just reformated the drive to work with my Mac, assuming that I'd be able to use it as a normal external at that point. It worked fine initially (the day I reformatted it) but today when I plugged it in (the first time I've connected it to the Macbook after initially setting it up) it is recognized in Finder but I can't move any files to/from it. I opened Disk Utility to see if maybe I had formatted it incorrectly or something (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and it isn't even recognized in Disk Utility. So now I just have this drive I can browse through and open files on but can't add new files to or move files from it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Nevermind, I seem to have resolved the problem.

• VSOM Not Showing Disk Usage for Media Servers

I wanted to try and figure out why my Operations Manager is not synchronizing the disk usage of the media servers storage partition. Currently I am running a fully virtualized environment on a Cisco UCS-B series chassis with version VSM 7.5.1 (Redhat 6.4) on my Operations Manager and all of the media servers.
As shown in the image below I am providing an example of the disk usage that shows for one of my media servers in the Operations Manager
Below is the an image of the disk usage shown through CLI of the same server.
As you can see there is a major discrepancy between the 37MB Used(Operations Manager) and the 4.8TB Used(CLI).
Has anyone ran into a similar issue and found a resolution, or know of the scripts on the Operations Manager or the media servers that are responsible for the sychronization of this information.
Thanks,
Michael

Interesting.  Thanks for following up and letting us know a punt self-righted it.  Have you checked to see if it only updated the once, or is it keeping accurate track now as storage get used?

• Time Machine error: could not backup, Disk Utility Error: Couldn't unmount disk

I recently bought a WD for Mac 1TB external drive which has been set up as Time Machine.  This was as a result of my internal hard drive failing and being replaced.  Time machine has worked a treat for last 3 weeks, but today I get a message:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.
So I go into disk utilities to verify the disk and I get this message:
Verifying volume “My Passport for Mac”
Checking file systemError: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
I click on the Repair Disk and get this message:
Verify and Repair volume “My Passport for Mac”
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Couldn’t unmount disk.
last backup was at 3.53pm today.
Any ideas?

Why would I need to reboot the whole computer?
However, I did shut it down and restart it and the problem is fixed.

• Disk utility not recognizing HD

Hi,
I have a G4 PowerMac with two 80 GB hard drives. When I boot up the computer, it boots up from the primary drive and runs fine. At this time, both my primary and my secondary drives are accessible and visible.
However, when I boot up the computer using either the Tiger or Leopard DVDs and then run Disk Utility, it only recognizes my secondary hard drive and not my main hard drive.
Also, if I quit Disk Utility at this time and tell it to re-start, it asks me which drive to boot from and the only option is either the DVD or the secondary hard drive. It just doesn't even see my main hard drive. I have to eject the DVD and re-boot for it to boot from the primary drive again.
Any advice?

I can see and use the hard drive only when I boot from it. When I boot from it, it is on my desktop, in my System Profiler, and visible under Disk Utility.
When I boot from DVD, the drive is not visible anywhere - not in System Profiler and not in Disk Utility.
I booted the computer using the HD and did a "Verify Disk". It gave me several errors and one in red that told me I needed to do a disk repair. I did a disk repair by booting the computer into Safe Mode (which performs a disk repair automatically). Then I rebooted regularly (from the HD) and went into Disk Utility and did another "Verify Disk". This time it verified successfully. I also repaired permissions successfully.
However...
when I booted from DVD, the drive was again invisible.
