Protect cells

Hi!
How can I protect some cells against editing?
I' making a spreadsheet where users will fill in the numbers in some of the Columns, while others Columns containing formulas as they will NOT be allowed to change.

Hi Eva,
Numbers will allow you to lock a table, but will not allow you to lock some Columns or Rows or Cells within a table.
Make two tables. One (unlocked) for input by users. Another table (locked) that contains the formulas. Click on that table to make it active, then
Menu > Arrange > Lock.
Perhaps a third (locked) table to display the results?
You can also "hide" a table by moving it to another Sheet.

Ian

  • Protect cells in Numbers

Is there a way to protect cells in Numbers so that they don't accidentally get overwritten?

    Hi gswank,
You can lock the entire table.
You can create an input table an have all your calculations elsewhere.
If you are in iOS a form will not allow a formula to be overwritten.
But no, you cannot protect individual cells.

  • Quickoffice spreadsheets: Can you merge cells?  Protect cells?

    Hello!
I have several forms created in Excel that I would like to use on iPad. I am searching around for the right/best app to use for these forms. If anyone who has used Quickoffice could answer a few questions I would greatly appreciate it.
    1. When I open an Excel file in Quickoffice will any changes automatically be made to the file just by opening it with this application?
    2. Is it possible to merge cells?
    3. Is it possible to protect cells/sheets?
Thank you very much for your time and assistance!

As far as I can tell from Your figure, You have selected something (yellow box) outside (?) of the table? Or is the selection column 1 of the table?
    - If You selected something outside of the table, You cannot "merge" something which is not part of a table;
    - if it is indeed column 1 of a table, all the cells have already been merged int one.
Like our antipodes would say..."No worries, mate"... AS far as I can tell from the figure, the merge function seems to be working.
If I am wrong, please don't feel offended and clarify Your problem.

  • Grouping & protected cells on EPM protected list

         Hello, colleagues!
I have two requirements for input forms in EPM Excel add-in
    1) Only data input ready cells should be not protected (in order to hide all worksheets support formulas, prevent user from unacceptable actions and so on)
    2) Excel standard grouping functionality should work (groups already exists, users want just to use it and not to create/delete them)
It seems that we can't implement this two requirements in the same time:
    ProtectSheet_ProtectContents - allow to implement (1) but locked (2)
    ProtectSheet_UserInterfaceOnly - allow (2) but cells doesn't locked (1)
Also i have tried all other available parameters for EPM list protecting and had no result.
Any ideas? or somebody can confirm that it is no possible?
    Thanks a lot
    Aleksandr.

    Hi Alexander,
This is not a BPC issue, it's Excel issue. It can be only solved with VBA code in the workbook open event (solution is not persistent):
    Dim wsh As Worksheet
    For Each wsh In ThisWorkbook.Worksheets
      With wsh
    .EnableOutlining = True
    .Protect Password:="somepassword", Contents:=True, UserInterfaceOnly:=True
    End With
    Next wsh
    Vadim
P.S. Search Google "excel protection group"

  • Locking/Protecting cells

I am new to this forum, therefore I apologize if I cross the rules here as I am sure this has been asked before, however I can not see a search feature on my screen to search past posts.
I am trying to lock/protect certain cells, rows and columns so that poeple are unable to change them in the template. Is this possible in Numbers? I know how to do this in Excel... hoping there will be a way in Numbers

Numbers does not have an equivalent feature to cell-locking. The closest that you can come to this is to lock an entire Table. You can get creative and divide input and output between unlocked and locked tables, and you can abut the tables to make them look like a single table. Next best is to protect the formula cells by placing a clear shape over them and locking the shape.

  • How do I protect cell contents in iwork 9?

Would like to password protect calculated cells (Numbers 9) from accidental erasure.
Tried the translucent shap locked over the calculated cells.
Problem with this is cell can still be tabbed into.
Protecting a cells contents a basic necessity.
Inability to do this is glaring oversight.
If I can't do this it looks like renewing  Microsoft Office license for my medical office and dumping iWorks.
This too bad as I otherwise like Numbers flexibility.
    Trent

    Hi Trent,
In Numbers, you can not lock a range of cells within a table. However, you can move (or copy) those cells to another table and lock that table. The new table can be small (just the range of cells that you want to keep separate). You can hide that table on another Sheet if you wish.
    Menu > Table > Lock
Make sure that the locked table has no formulas that link its values back to any other table. Formulas will still update the locked table.
Have a look at Menu > Paste Values to paste values (not formulas) into the new table before locking it.
The Numbers User Guide is a useful read. Download it from the Help Menu in Numbers.

    Ian.

  • Protecting Cells

    HI TO ALL!
I just moved from pc to mac and I am switching my business contract spreadsheets over to numbers v3.
I ran into a few issues that I could use some advice on:
    1.  I have read that you cannot freeze a row other than the header rows.  I would like to see the top 5 rows for 'totals' as I make changes deep into the spreadsheet as opposed to scrolling to the top with each change.
    2.  I cannot lock a cell?  That means that formulas (some fairly complex) are wiped out if someone enters a cell and hits the back button...or any button!
    3. Same for COMMENTS.  If I enter a cell with a comment and hit the back button it removes the comment.
Issues 2 & 3 mean that comments, notes, and formulas are not safe during the months that a project is in process and updated/modified daily.  The whole point was to sync project mgmt from my mac to my ipad while in the field.
Any advice (other than going back to excel)?

    1.  I have read that you cannot freeze a row other than the header rows.  I would like to see the top 5 rows for 'totals' as I make changes deep into the spreadsheet as opposed to scrolling to the top with each change.
You can put your SUM formulas in five Header Rows at the top and in the menu choose Table > Freeze Header Columns.  That way the rows with the totals will stay at the top, both on the Mac and in iOS.
Numbers can't match Excel in cell protection, unfortunately. The best you can do in Numbers is clearly segregate data entry tables from tables with calculations and lock the tables with calculations.  That's not a bad practice anyway. The more you can separate data entry from calculations, generally the better off you will be, in Numbers or Excel.
You probably have noticed that the syncing between the Mac and iOS works well now. But make sure you're backing up (via Time Machine or otherwise) the Library > Mobile Documents > com~apple~Numbers folder. You see what's there in Finder by holding down the option key and choosing Go from the menu, then navigating to the folder.  That's the folder you would "Restore" from if necessary.

  • Reset passworkd for SAP protection cells

    Hi Guru:
In the excel based planning layout, the input disabled cell is protected by the password SAP, somehow my end user knew the password and use it to change some input disabled cells to input enabled.
Is there any way to change the password?
    Thanks.
    Eric

well after you've shot that user, you should be able to change the password in the layout configuration by the normal means.
ie, you need to be in the final screen of layout configuration, goto the excel worksheet security change the password and save the layout.
You have to do it in layout config as obviously any attempts to change the layout in execution mode won't hold. Excel can be a little funny in that sometimes if you just change something like a password or cell protection it doesn't seem to recognise that changes have been made and won't save properly, you may need to make some abritary chnages to a cell to ensure the layout workbook config changes a are saved.

  • Protect cells in Numbers for iPad

    Hello all,
I have a master spreadsheet on a shared iPad I would like to protect. The idea is, anyone who needs to use the spreadsheet would make a copy and use that copy, leaving the master spreadsheet unchanged. Unfortunately, I do not trust most of the users that would be using the iPad to not change the master (by accident, of course).
Does anyone know of a way I can accomplish that?
    Thanks,
    Scott

I too can't open a Numbers '09 file on the iPad. Its around 600KB with 7 sheets. Sometimes similar sized files open, sometimes not.
Is it crashing or is it giving wrong results ?
I understood that with the late changes it opened but some formulas give odd results.
I sent the test file to some one which is often on this forum.
Just hope that he will respond.

  • EvDRE protecting cells - "The cell contains a calculated value.."

I have an evdre input template that gives me the following message "The cell contains a calculated value, or is for a non-base-level member.  Try changing the associated member to a base level member, then re-entering the value".
Everything at the intersection is base level.  Any suggestions on how to disable this message?  What enables this message?  I have had other situations where the intersection has a calculated member and it doesn't show this prompt, but only tells of the calculated member in the send confirmation screen. (BPC 5.1sp3)
    Thanks
    Mark

Thanks for the answer.  It is data validation.  I had used the Apshell version of  an input template as a starting point and had changed it to evdre and made changes that impacted the data validation that was baked in.  I didn't realize that this was being included in their Apshell templates.
    Thanks again

  • Can you protect cell contents?  Say, if I have this great formula I don't want changed.

I have multiple spreadsheets that I use formulas in.  MOST of them were created in Excel, and I"m migrating over.
In Excel, I could lock a cell from being changed.  Can the same thing be accomplished in Numbers?
    Thanks!

Now, how do we get Apple to add this feature?
No guarantee because happily, the list of feature is defined by Apple, not by us. In the other case, the result is the awful gas factory named Excel.
_Go to "Provide Numbers Feedback" in the "Numbers" menu_, describe what you wish.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'11 ;-)

  • Smartview error when submitting/refreshing: "The cell or chart that you are trying to change is protected"

Hello! Users are trying to submit data within a form, but they get the following error message:
<<The cell or chart that you are trying to change is protected and therefore read-only. To modify a protected cell or chart, first remove protection using the Unprotectect Sheet command (Review tab, changes group). You may be prompted for a password.>>
They get the same error when they try to refresh the form.
The form is part of a task-list, but is not supposed to be protected. Actually they open the form from an empty excel workbook, so I don't understand what's the difference with other forms, where they don't have this message.
Do you have an idea of what is triggering it?

Users were in Smartview 11.1.2.1. The issue described above has been identifed as a software defect an it has been logged as bug 16017903 by Oracle. To solve this issue download and install Patch 16238382, or alternatively unistall Smartview and install version 11.1.2.2.310.

  • Locking a cell to prevent it from being overwritten

I want to create a table that restricts data entry to specific cells within the table, keeping cells with formulas that calculate data from being overwritten but I am not seeing any way to "protect" cells from inadvertent data entry. Putting an object over the top of a cell or range of cells and setting its opacity to 0 and then locking it keeps you from selecting the underlying cell with the mouse but you can still tab over to the cell with the direction keys and enter data. Is there a way to lock/protect a cell to keep it from being overwritten?

    b,
This is an area that Numbers can't really address effectively. The designers don't seem to have considered the possibility of having a document designed by one user and used by others less knowledgeable or trustworthy or careful. If you don't like the workarounds that you found in other discussions your best course is to use another program for now and submit Feedback to Apple if you want to influence future development.

  • Smartview Problem with Protected Sheets

    Hello,
We use Hyperion Smart View in our company and discovered a problem while using protected excel sheets while the addin is active. Excel asks for the password but doesnt accept it even if it is the right password. If we disable the addin the problem disappears. Has somebody else such a problem ?
Has somebody a solution or a workaround ?
    Thanks for the help

This issue was logged under Bug 6591401 - When Smart View is active and the worksheet is protected, the following error message is encountered ''Drawing Objects in one or more sheet(s) in the workbook are protected. Please unprotect them and try to save again.'' However, Bug 6591401 has been closed as not a defect.
The following is an explanation of how Smart View handles protected cells and a workaround for this issue:
Smart View needs some place to store it's own metadata within the Excel spreadsheet and it has been using a certain non-obtrusive object for the same. In versions 9.2 and prior, Smart View attempted to unprotect the Excel worksheets to be able to write it's metadata. That led to unexpected behavior when there were passwords used with the protection. This was fixed in 9.3.1.1.2 to make Smart View elegantly honor the spreadsheet protection and not touch objects which are specified as out of bounds by the user. However, when a spreadsheet is protected, this object can become inaccessible to Smart View, after which even a simple save operation cannot go through. In that sense, the current behavior is indeed the correct behavior, where the user placed restriction is honored correctly. The next question will be how can customers then work with protected sheets.
While protecting a worksheet, the following dialog appears which is where the user will have to establish what kind of operations will be allowed on this worksheet. By default the top two options are the only ones that come pre-selected. Just allowing these two options is not sufficient for Smart View to be able to work with the worksheet.
What also needs to be enabled is the option for "Edit Objects" which appears towards the end of the list. It is this option that helps Smart View to be able to persist it's own metadata within the worksheet in a non-obtrusive fashion. The guidance to all Smart View users should be to start enabling this option too, if they choose to apply worksheet protection.
