PS5 tool menus and overall performance

Hi,
I have a 17inch MacBook Pro, 2.3 GHz, 6GB of RAM, OS X Lion 10.7.2.
I have just reinstalled adobe PS 5.1 thinking it would solve a problem, but it didn't.
Right now, everytime I click on a tool in the tool bar, the tool activates fine, unless I have to hold down the buton to get the full menu for a specific tool. If I do need for example to get the Dodge Tool, and need to hold the Burn Tool in order to get there, the drop menu stalls for 5-6 seconds, than I can choose the tool, and then it stalls for another 6 seconds, and then I'm able to use the tool.
I have had a much less powerful computer which is running CS5.1 just fine (in this case even better!).
Can someone help me with this issue??
Thanks,
Jonathan

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated?
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by keeping command-alt-shift pressed on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.
Does turning off OpenGL in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

  • HR infotype log in PCL4 and overall performance

    Hi there,
There has been a few threads about PCL4 performance with regards to reading, but I have a slightly different question:
We are working on an export program for HR masterdata and are considering using logging in PCL4 to be able to export only changed fields in the infotypes. To achieve this we need to add quite alot of extra fields and infotypes to the configuration in the IMG.
Does anyone have any experience about how additional fields and infotypes affect runtime and database performance of the system? How optimized is the system with regards to writing to this cluster?
It will obviously cause more data to be logged, and the database will grow slightly faster, but does it decrease responsiveness of PA30/40 for the end users? Is it possible to archive old data from this cluster? I'm guessing that it won't be a big problem, but any feedback is greatly appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Lars G. Gudbrandsen

    Hi Lars,
Probably you would get a better response in the HCM section as opposed to ABAP.
Maybe you can use change pointers, and badis rather, to acheive what you want but I am not 100% sure the requirement.
Additional fields and infotypes don't impact the system negatively in my opinion. It wouldn't affect PA30, unless the specific infotype is selected and then provided if it has been correctly created in PM01 it should be fine, also depending how many fields you are talking about of course. PA40 would only be impacted for those transacitons for which the infotype is included.
As for archiving, I am not sure, but once again i think HCM forum is your best bet.

I've had a lot of devices through the years. With those years and devices comes a little bit of knowledge that may be of use here.

I followed your guide and was inpsired to do these COD tweaks on all my Android devices (Droid 3 and Droid x2) will they also work?
More importantly have you exp. any issues with HD play back? I havn't been able to fix this at all. Its really laggy on this device.
Do you have a safe list of things that we can freeze as well? There is a desktop app that you can freeze in Titanium which pretty much disables the home screen..i.e. dont freeze it. Im trying to get rid of most of this bloat ware.

  • T400s Question of RAM and overall performance

    I have a T400s.  P9600 @ 3.53 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, Windows 7 64bit, 64 GB Solid state hard drive
Recently while writing my Masters thesis using microsoft word, the computer was very slow and had difficulties switching between Microsoft office 2003 Word and Excel.  The Word doc. became rather large, filled with pics and files, etc. However working on other desktop computers with much slower processors and less RAM available I had no difficulties.
Furthermore, I used my wife's notebook, from another company, that has the same processor and RAM but operates on a 32 bit system and has a much better video card with 512 MB of memory with no problems.  Also, when monitoring the system performance I never see the RAM operating at higher than 34% which the 64 bit system needs to operate.  The last observation is what leads me to believe something is not working properly with my notebook that is only 6 months old.
Other than this issue this is the best computer I have ever owned, but I bought it mainly because it was ranked as the most powerful notebook in the industry, and I have problems with Microsoft office??
Is there a problem with using Office 2003 with windows 7 64bit?
Is this caused by the performance of the video card?
Or is there an issue with my RAM or Notebook?

    A few questions:
    1) Has the performance always been this way, or is it a new occurance.
    2) Which video card do you have?  If you are using the integrated intel video make sure you have the most up to date Windows7 drivers from Lenovo, if that doesn't seem to help you could try different releases to see which performs the best, a good way to see if the video is the issue is to do something video intensive (1080p video or the likes).  It is somewhat unlikely that the video driver could influence the speed of office however since for the most part these are non-graphic intensive apps.  Another thing would be to try using the Windows Basic theme, if you still have issues it is unlikely the video card.
    3) There are alot of factors which can influence memory usage in 64bit windows, keep in mind in most situations only 64 bit applications can access memory above 3gb.  What is the size of the page file?    If the system is reporting the full amount of memory it is unlikely that it isn't available to the system.   34% of your ram seems high for just the system since my 3gb system has 1.1 gb in use with firefox, aim, openoffice.org and all the lenovo apps and avira anti virus going.
    4) What antivirus software are you using, has the system been scanned recently and have you tried to reproduce the issue with the antivirus disabled?
    5) How full is your HD.  Even with SSD's things slow down quite a bit as the drive reaches it's capacity..  64GB is a little on the tight side for Windows7.

  • After upgradingin iPhone 4 to iOS 7 the response time of the keyboard is dead slow (basically not able to write) and overall performance is a real challenge. Any ideas?

After upgrade to IOS 7, the iPhone of my wife is dead slow. It takes at least 10 seconds that the virtual keyboard responds and even the passlock reaction to the inputs is very much delayed. Like this she is not able to do write any messages or emails.
    Any ideas what can help?

Thank you!! I was getting very worried about upgrading.

Is a readable interface an unreasonable expectation?
Not at all, and we should well expect that Adobe is working on it.  By their own admission they ARE working on it.  I don't sense "deafening silence" at all.  But results won't/can't be instantaneous and they're not going to promise you release dates.  Life is not like that, no matter how many times you click your red shoes together.
It's not hard to understand that right now only a small minority of Photoshop users are running high dpi screens that can't take advantage of the 200% setting.  And it was the choice of those users to buy such hardware even in light of the fact that Photoshop can't work fully well on it yet.  Adobe didn't force anyone to buy a 150 ppi display.
Frankly, if you've chosen such hardware even though Photoshop doesn't offer 150% scaling, it's your own fault.  I recently invested well over $1000 in a new monitor and I planned well enough ahead to buy a 100ppi model (Dell U3014, and it's GREAT).  There's a reason that very new technology is called "bleeding edge".  If you want "To Work" instead of "Dealing With Quirks", sometimes you have to be conservative.
A majority of Photoshop users DO expect new and useful features, however, such as new tools, new camera support in Camera Raw, etc., so Adobe understandably cannot dedicate every resource they have to revamping Photoshop's user interface just for a special few folks who have irresponsibly adopted new display technology.
We can debate all day how much Adobe ought to be spending on engineering development, but you and I don't run the company.  We don't make business decisions for them.  I do, however, claim to understand their capabilities and limitations - possibly better than most - because I'm in the same business.
I can only recommend you be patient.  One day Photoshop will respond to your desktop settings.
What the heck has anybody ever accomplished here, with Adobe, in either fashion?
Rhetorical or not, some quite tangible things do come to mind...
At one time I couldn’t paste my clipboard containing a grayscale image into a new document via an action assigned to a key; the color engine would crash.  Today I can do so without incident.
At one time multiple Help windows would pop up unexpectedly, often when working in the Styles panel.  Today they don’t.
At one time I had to select Basic GPU mode.  Today I use Advanced GPU mode without a problem.
Once running Liquify or Smart Sharpen or a number of other things were slow, especially on big images.  Now they're quite fast, with GPU acceleration.
At one time an action could not write data back to a document when in windowed mode.  Today it works.
At one time panorama stitching and focus stacking did not work.  Now it works.
At one time most filters only worked on 8 bits/channel data.  Now many of them can handle 16 bits/channel.
Once naysayers predicted that the Photoshop Photography bundle would shoot up in price.  Yet today it's still $9.99 a month.
Once it was impossible to read Photoshop's UI on a 200+ ppi screen.  Now there's a new 200% setting for that.
I'm sure I can think of other things.  And of course the software isn't perfect today.  It never will be absolutely perfect.
Station_two, are you keeping up with the latest Photoshop releases?  If not, I submit that your rhetoric may be falling out of date.

  • CS6 menus and tool bars too small

I have a new Dell XPS15 laptop with Windows 8. Installed Photoshop CS6 & all tool bars and menus are too tiny. I've contacted Dell Support and Adobe Support and everyone blames the other guy. Please help.

This is a PC only issue, I believe Macs with Retina displays do not have this problem...  I just got a Dell M3800 with a QHD+ 3200x1800 display and sadly yes, all Adobe CC products and AVID editing software are pretty much unusable in hi-res mode under Windows 8.1.  That is especially disturbing when Dell claims that the M3800 is certified to run those applications without mention of the resolution limitation which is a pretty big deal for anyone working in the graphic and video business.  False advertising it is

  • How do I enlarge tiny menus and tools (CS5, Win 8.1)

I installed Photoshop CS5 on a Windows 8.1 machine (3200x1800pixel resolution). The menus and tools are really tiny---about half the usual size (see image below). This also occurs in Adobe Bridge, but not Acrobat 9.0. No other programs are so affected (e.g. MS Word, Chrome web browser). I have tried lowering the computer's screen resolution without any effect on Photoshop CS5 (other programs appear enlarged then, but not CS5). I have not had any problem when this program was installed on a Windows 7 machine. Any ideas?

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * If items are missing then open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
    * If a missing item is in the toolbar palette then drag it from the Customize window on the toolbar
    * If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up.

  • My solution for: Slow Installs and poor performance

So up until today, most of anyting on XP or even vista 64 ultimate was taking a very long time to install or copy from one part of the drive to another. Startup would grow longer and game performance was dying and only once ever did reinstalling the OS do anything. No matter what I did, nothing would fix the problem.
I ran multiple utilities (disk utility, disk warrior, tech tool deluxe, etc) but none said that there was a hardware problem. But this issue I was having (and I know some of you do) was definitely related to the computer. From my experience, I determined that there was no way this mac was perfect.
So I scheduled a service and repair at my apple store (under warranty). When it was done a few days later, sure enough, I was told that even though the utilities we users can use on our end to diagnose problems didn't find any problems, the hard drive did not pass apple's detailed inspection and was replaced.
In conclusion, I say that if you are having this problem, run disk utility and if you have the extra protection plan, download the Tech Tool Deluxe that apple provides on the support site. Disk utility may find some permission and disk issues but if Tech Tool doesnt find anything even on the surface scan, take it in to the apple store to have a Genius look at it. If it's not under warranty, it's up to you whether or not you want to spend that money. Overall, my computer both on Leopard and XP now runs just as it should.
    Hope that helps.

  • My pulldown menus and bookmarks have disappeared. How do I get them back?

Today, without doing anything to the browser, Firefox's pulldown menus and my bookmarks have all disappeared and I can't figure out how to get them back. I still have the icons for the basic tools, like the home page, but all the regular pulldowns, which I use frequently, are gone. Any ideas?
I have already downloaded the newest version of Firefox to see if this would work and it did not. Anybody?

If ALL your menus have disappeared, press F11 (you may have to hit the Fn key simultaneously). If only one or two of the menu bars have disappeared, hit F10 (again, Fn key may also be needed, depending on your settings). This will bring the menu bars back temporarily--until you click on something else on the screen. While they are showing, hit View/Toolbars and check whichever menu bars you wish to appear. Unless you have a deeper issue, this should fix the problem.

A lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CC", but something like CC2014.v.2.2) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
    etc.,

  • Downloaded iobit tool Bar and it locks up firfox can not do anything

I down loaded iobit tool bar and it made it through. but now whne I open Firefox, everything stops. I then uninstalled firefox, rebooted and the same thing happens. Also had to use a revo to uninstall firefox. At this point I can not use Mozilla. My only option is to use Internet explorer

Yeah I'm seeing this as well. A force quit and relaunch seems to solve the problem for a while.
IMHO the app has just gone downhill in the last few years. Useful tools like browser history from the back button are hidden / rendered useless (click and hold doesn't work so well from a track pad), and it's performance just isn't what it used to be.
